Eirik rose from his slumber early that morning, and found himself capable of watching the sun rise above the cliffs. His siblings were no doubt still asleep, but Eirik found little urge to return to the safety of the den and snooze with the rest of them. He had an odd itch deep in his gut to go out and do something, but knew very little of what that something was. Lifting a claw to scratch at his snout, the tan cub left his family's den and trotted towards where bored adults often dueled to stave off boredom.

He enjoyed watching the adults duel in his spare time, between following Taraxa and Lennart around and stalking the Warlord for the sake of curiosity. As he sat at the then-empty spot, Eirik wondered briefly why he was content in watching and not doing. Perhaps that would stave off the boredom he found settling in his stomach. Hmmm...

Movement to his left broke his reverie. He glanced towards it, and without realizing whom might be there and whether it would be proper to call to them as such, the words flew out of his mouth: "Some day, I will kill you!" As an afterthought, he hoped it was someone who would not take his threat seriously. While he had high hopes in adulthood, he was still only a (admittedly small) cub. Handling an adult duel? No thx.

Yawning he shook his head roughly to dispel the haziness that continued insisted on settling in front of his vision. Frowning he lifted his head and looked upwards, sighing when he realised that the sun was already on its way up. No wonder he was so tired, he'd been training since the sun had hidden away under the blanket of night time. Giving a tiny, weary shrug he sat down on the scrubby grass and licked at a shallow cut on his chest where he had miss-timed a swipe and gone head over heals onto a sharp rock. After a moment, stifling a huge yawn, the young cub pulled himself to his paws and turned onto the well worn path that would take him back to the main area of the pride's daytime space. Padding along he wasn't even paying attention until a call came from his side, jerking him round with fangs bared and tail ram-rod straight.

"Not Today!" He called back sharply, pale eyes squinting as he tried to see who it was out here.

Well, that was a bit of a letdown. That certainly didn't sound like an adult [)i]or the Warlord). It sounded like a cub. Hmph. Still, Eirik rose and treaded towards the sound of the fellow freeborn, tail flicking behind him curiously. He poked his head around a corner where he'd been concealed, and offered a tiny smirk at Lucivar.

"You're up early." Whether or not it actually was early, or the adults were just sleeping off the aftereffects of some mint, it didn't matter. He was the only person up, and Eirik was looking for trouble. He grinned wide, eyes gleaming as he plotted for a few moments. He didn't doubt Lucivar could beat him; in fact, he was almost certain he would. But half of the fun was in the fighting itself. So, with little warning, Eirik charged at Lucivar with a high-pitched sound that should have been a roar, but came out more like a yowl, in an attempt to barrel right into Lucivar.

Pin the foe right, and he wouldn't be able to get away. Miss, and Eirik was gonna go headfirst into a rock. What a morning, right? But Eirik moved faster than he thought he would, and his head connected with Lucivar's shoulder hard, barrelling into the younger cub with a (supposedly) threatening growl.

The stranger appeared from behind a scrubby bush and Lucivar blinked, recognising the brown furred male as one of Taraxa's kids. He knew the family though the name of this one escaped him right now, his mind fogged with tiredness. It was his utter weariness that Lucivar later blamed when Eirik's charge caught him completely unprepared and when the brown cub barrelled into him, Lucivar went flying, tumbling over the ground head over tail, skidding to a halt flat on his side some yards distant. Scrambling to his paws with an indignant yowl he glared darkly at the other cub.

"I'll kill you!"

It was no greeting but a hissed curse as Lucivar gathered his feet under him and sprang at his enemy. Blue eyes narrowed and his exhaustion completely forgotten as he slashed with his right front paw, just like he had been practising day in and day out with Thoran, his (somewhat scary and fearsome) teacher.

"I'd like to see you try," Eirik growled, bracing himself for an attack. Mere seconds later, Lucivar's paw made purchase on Eirik's shoulder. It would've been his head, had the cub not ducked, but even then it hurt. He shook his head as he stumbled backwards, rolling his shoulder in an attempt to stave off the pain. Yes, it hurt. If he thought for one second one strike was going to make Eirik stop fighting, though, Lucivar was in for a surprise.

With a tiny, indignant snarl, Eirik raised a paw to smack at Lucivar's face, claws withdrawn. He didn't want the guy to go crying to his Dad or something, after all, and blood would do that. A good smack to the face, though, that was freakin' warranted after the hit he'd taken to the shoulder! The cub was stronger than he thought he'd be.

There was no chance of Lucivar hoping to stop the fight, to him it was only just starting. After being attacked for no reason and while he was weary and tired, the younger cub was intent on making his ill will felt. "I will do better than try!" He snarled in reply, ducking his head as the older cub swiped at him. Jumping to the side he bared his fangs in an angry hiss, small tail lashing.

Gathering himself, he lunged at the brown cub, completely forgetting his training as he threw himself bodily into the older male, aiming to knock him form his paws and bring him down for the final blow.

Triumph at having thrown Lucivar from his apparent skill, Eirik braced himself for the impact of a cub running at him. This, this was nothing new. He was certainly used to being tackled by his siblings and, what was more important, he had a general idea of how to take a tackle and twist it around to his advantage. He took the tackle, and as soon as he was down he twisted his head to bite Lucivar on the ear, swatting his paws at Lucivar's sides in an attempt to throw him down.

He tried to roll with Lucivar still on top of him. A pin was, in his mind, a win. A successful pin, anyway. He put all of his weight into trying to roll and pin Lucivar under him, growling low in his throat.

The bite received a snarl rather than a sound of pain, the younger cub further enraged by the attack instead of being discouraged. he certainly didn't lack spirit, did Lucivar.

But the older, and heavier, cub had the advantage as Lucivar's weariness and all night workout took its toll on the smaller body and he lost his balance, tumbled over Eirik's larger frame and ending up pinned under the other cub. With all our legs trapped between them, he hissed and struggled furiously, but in the end, only won himself a scraped up back and exhausted his rage-fuelled strength.

Panting heavily, he finally went still under the brown male, blue eyes narrowed but defeated. Yet still he refused to actually say the words that would admit his weakness.

Eirik wasn't so mean as to make the cub admit to having lost. He knew if he was the one pinned down, he certainly wouldn't have the courage to admit it. He himself would have claimed to be 'just resting', or something equally ridiculous. Once the cub went still under him, Eirik let go of the hold he had on Lucivar and stumbled back, tripping on his paws and just catching himself before he fell over. That was a less than dignified way to act after winning a duel, but whatever.

Grinning, elated more at the fight itself than his victory, Eirik plopped down by Lucivar, panting a little. "I'm Eirik," he said after the minute he took to catch his breath. "What's your name?" Why not, right? They were practically brothers, after that fight!

Lucivar blinked in surprise as the other hefted himself off and stepped back. Wasn't he supposed to demand acknowledged or something? No that Lucivar wasn't grateful, the fact that he had lost sat ill with him, though in his head he knew it was right, he was younger and smaller, but his heart told him he had just disgraced himself. Laying still for a little longer as he let himself catch his breath, and to prove he was not afraid of being vulnerable before an 'enemy', the youngster finally pulled himself up and stood, shaking the dust and dirt from his coat before carefully sitting down, tail curled round his paws, the medallion at his chest, one that was currently far too big for him, shimmered in the early morning light.

Blinking in confusion at the other he flicked an ear but nodded when the other gave his name. "I'm Lucivar... son of Gunner..." Licking a bit of his own blood from his muzzle he couldn't help but blink wide eyes at Eirik, uncertain how to respond now the fight was over and this one seemed to want to chat to him. ".... You up early?" he finally offered a little lamely, at a loss as to what else to say.

Eirik blinked. Gunnar? He knew that lion! Gunnar was a friend of his father's. He grinned. "Your father is friends with mine," he said matter-of-factly. "My father is Taraxa, and my mother..." He trailed off, and shook his head. "She is not Stormborn." And thus, not important. Eirik loved his mother, but how could he respect someone he never met? His mother was like a phantom to Eirik, distant and untouchable.

"Yeah." Eirik said belatedly, to his question. He always woke up early, for one reason or another. "'m the first one up and the last to bed." He said proudly, grinning. Though it was often because Eirik stumbled in well after his siblings, he prided himself on being the one who was up the longest. It was a sort of cubhood victory for Eirik. "You're really good." He said after a minute, talking about the duel. "You must practice a lot." The compliment was Eirik's way of trying to bury the hatchet, in a way. He didn't want the other cub to hate him for winning. It really was the luck of the draw, in most instances.

The younger cub nodded, finally relaxing enough to shake out his paw, irritated at the dull throb that kept pulsing through it. "I know your dad.. he and mine hang out a lot and I met your brother, Lennart,at the Sending Off of the Warlord's raid party." Pausing a moment he tried to think of the other cubs names. "Morath, Loki, Lennart, you, Ulrika.. Tryggr... I think that's it?" Pausing he mentally reeled back the other's words and nodded. "Nor is mine, I don't know her." Shrugging he dismissed the topic. After all, the number of cubs who didn't know their dams was high in the Stormborn and Lucivar didn't think it should be any different. Sine if the female was not of the pride and a Reaver or Captain, it didn't make any difference to him who she was.

Nodding to Eirik's reply he paused and looked up at the compliment, pale eyes wary but slowly he relaxed again, ears pricking forwards tentatively. "Thanks..." Oddly shy the younger cub dipped his head, staring at the medallion that sat round his neck. "Every day.... I train with Thoran and by my self..." Shifting a little he suddenly yawned loudly, tears blurring his vision. "...I was up all night practising..." He finally admitted, rubbing his face against his leg.

It didn't seem as if Lucivar held any kind of grudge. Though his young pride had been hurt by his loss, he knew he had made a beginners mistake, tackling a larger opponent head on, and he accepted the result of that error. But he couldn't think enough to go over the fight mentally just then, he needed sleep, and maybe food after that.

Eirik nodded a bit, shrugging it off. "It isn't uncommon." He said simply, smiling a little. What matter was that he had his father and his siblings. He had little use for a maternal figure. He found himself grinning at the oddly shy way Lucivar dipped his head, nodding to him. "It's impressive." He said, grinning a bit. "I like to stay up late and train as well, but..." Sometimes he was ushered to bed. It wasn't unusual for the cub to be forced into the den as the night fell. He felt his sole purpose in life was being a good Reaver like his father; could he be blamed?

Finding his mouth forcing itself open, he unleashed quite a yawn, and seemed to frown more at himself than Lucivar. "That fight must have taken more out of me than I thought." He said idly, suddenly sheepish. How could that look, getting so tired after one silly duel? He'd have to work on his endurance... "I think I should go take a nap or something." He said, straightening up and shaking the dust from his fur that had settled.

"We will have to duel again soon, Lucivar." He said with a grin, tail flicking behind him. "You're bound to best me next time."

Pale eyes brightened a little at the older cub's words. Lucivar was far harder on himself than either his mentor or his father had ever been. And while he liked to be praised by his family, he always half suspected they were soft on him for being related. This cub didn't know him aside from as some other reaver's kid.. so there was no reason for him to sugar-coat his words.

Letting himself feel a little proud, he smiled at Eirik. "Why don't we walk back together, I think our dens are fairly close to each other and I need to get back before my family wake..." Nodding as he pulled himself to his paws a little stiffly, he turned towards the denning area but stopped and looked up at Eirik expectantly.

"You bet I will. You had better train some more." Excited by the prospect of a proper match, the youngster grinned.

"Sure." Eirik nodded with a grin, turning and beginning to walk towards the dens with Lucivar. It was nice to have a friend whose focus was as strong on dueling as Eirik's was most days. He had his spouts of playfulness, and sometimes just enjoyed laying about and watching others for a while, observing their movements. But for the most part, Eirik's childhood would be focused on dueling in preparation for his First Raid, the epiphanic quest that all youths took to be considered grown males.

Eirik laughed a little at Lucivar, returning the grin easily. "Easy." He warned. "I might just sit on you and call it a day." He grinned innocently, walking towards the dens and looking around for a moment. His eyes wandered the area as they entered the dens' general placement, looking for familiar pelts of his father or his siblings. Seeing none, he returned his gaze to Lucivar, grinning. "I look forward to our next duel." He said honestly. "It's fun to fight with someone who knows what they're doing, instead of someone who just flops on me and calls it a day." Eirik certainly wasn't the biggest, and some of his best duels ended with him being squashed by his brothers or his mentor.

He really couldn't wait to be older. Seriously.
