Well we have this one girl and she's dropped her instrument at least twice that I've seen, she can't play that well for her age, and she doesn't even pay attention during class. She dropped it during our Christmas concert, and then also a year ago during one of of competions while going off stage she dropped it. -_-
Good advice for - Keep a good grip on your instrument.

Last year I dropped my clarinet durin marching practice and one of my section leaders told me to do twenty pushups sweatdrop (I cheated anyways) I dropped it again when we were packing up, not my falt, a friend of mine (who plays in pit) surprised me from behind. Well...I couldnt play on that clarinet anymore, cause it was soo damaged and I had to buy a new one. It was standing up when someone (another clarinet player) knocked it down on purpose...but it still works...sorta. ^_^

one of the other flute players in band, whenever we would go and lock our instruments in main attention, during marching band season, the foot of her flute would fly off onto the asphalt bus lot (where we practice) and she wouldn't go and get it and not play anymore....
then another clairinet player during a show was marching, she slipped in mud, her clairniet broke into pieces. she didn't play anymore in that show.......
ten me...i've dropped my flute so many times....half of my keys are bent....
so unfortantly the advice you have given, it doesn't work well with me.........

I was ulling my flute out of it's case and I had all 3 peices in my one hand (not a good idea to begin with) and was doing something with the other and the head joint fell and bent the part that goes into the other peice, but it's fied now, and I didn't learn and I did it again another time before a concert and dropped the end peice and the connecter got bent and it was hard as Hell to put together and take apart. I've dropped it so many times but nothing has happened that was too severe and now watch, I'll go back to school and drop it and break it...

Sigh. I don't drop mine all the time. But when i do it never seems to get bent. (few) Or anything bad happen. Though we all drop are instruments (or parts) at some point. Even if it is in a dream, or your imagination. Or if you are weird and you always hold your instrument and never drop it, good for you!

Heheh. My advice for clarinetists is DO NOT GREASE THE MIDDLE JOINT, because every time I did the top half would fall off while I was marching. Leading to bent keys and chipped mouthpieces sad
Actually you have to be careful with all of the joints...there's a girl in my band who dropped her bell right as we were charging out on the field at like 240 bpm and in extremely tight spacing...though somehow she managed to pick it up.
I've never dropped it in a concert though...how do you even do that? haha

Don't overgrease any parts of it and don't grease your hands? Keep a towel present, maybe?

I would cry... My bassoon is mine.
I guess I've always just been extra careful with my instruments. It has never happened to me.
