Hey guys! razz
I'd like to share ideas here about how to teach or help one learn a language. Anyone?

I think it depends on the age of the person/people you're teaching and how many people you're teaching. Some general suggestions:

-Most people aren't that "book-ish", so it might be a good idea to do "creative" stuff (otherwise they're likely to get bored). Pictures, hands-on activities, diagrams, etc can all be useful.

-Keep the vocabulary realistic. At school they teach us French words that we don't even know in English, and yet only 2 people in the class (another girl and I) know the difference between the composed past (the perfect present) and the imperfect. The student(s) has/have to see a point in the words they're learning, otherwise they won't be motivated to learn them.

-Revision is important. You don't have to teach everything 8 times, but it's good to review vocabulary and grammar every now and then, because even if they have a very good memory, they're bound to forget some things. Besides, repitition is key in languages.

Yup, I make the girl I tutor write stuff over and over so she gets the hang of it. I can't exactly "teach" her new things, because she has an awful teacher that is extremely disorganized. sweatdrop

I totally made a word search for that girl with food vocabulary. gonk

That was obnoxious; I used Windows Excel. Hopefully she likes it.

I've never really understood why word search'es are so good. If you get the words on a list and just have to find them in the box, where's the fun?
My german teacher gave us one of those a week or two back and I was done in no time. I think it would be more fun if you had to, like, find the words translated. You get a list of the words in your own language, then have to find them in the language you're learning. I think that would work wonders... Hmm...

^^Mkay...she has problems with spelling the words and remembering what they'd look like. This way, she'll see the word, repeat it over and over in her head, and hopefully find it in the puzzle.
Besides she's only in level 1, and not as self-sufficient as myself. sweatdrop

Of course, once she's a bit better, HB's suggestion would really be a good idea.

I wish I could figure out how to teach a language. Maybe then I would be able to run my Japanese thread better.

I always worked well with picture books. Really simple children's books drummed "naranja" (sp?) into my mind as "orange".

But yeah, repetition and PRACTICE, especially with somebody who is fluent is very very helpful for me. 3nodding

I tend to be better at written than spoken, and in fact I've realized that I have trouble connecting the two. I read and write very quickly, speak very quickly, and I sightread faster than most (in English AND in Spanish), but when I read out loud, I trip over my words because my brain works faster int eh visual than the audio, and matching the two causes issues

I read words and sentences out loud all the time while I'm studying. The Spanish books we use have these long passages, and I probably drive my roomie insane reading them razz
But it's helped me a lot in class after all, so that may be a good teaching method too biggrin

I think that you should encourage the use of mnemonic devices, system of associations. For example:
We can remember the word viejo with an image of VA doctor trying to use a hoe to plow a field.

Not the best example, but I hope you understand the gist of what I am trying to say.
