Jews of the guild, do any of us really care about people saying "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays"" or "Season's Greetings?" ... Really? ... Anyone? ... Anyone? ... ... I thought so.

While I am niether Jewish nor Christian, I do not take offense when someone says "happy Christmas" or "Merry Christmas". When someone says such to me, I smile, and wish them the same. Although I am not the person celebrating, it doesn't make sense to me to pout and complain that some religions are over celebrated. Besides, not saying the name of the holiday does not change the fact that it is that particular holiday that people are celebrating.
To my Russian friend Sil, Happy St. Nicolas Day...

I'm not Jewish, but I am of a non Christian faith and I'd have to say that the tone of the greeting means more to me that the wording. When people are trying to share in what for them is a time of joyous celebration then I appreciate their thought in including me and welcoming me as a person regardless of my faith. When someone is wearing buttons proclaiming Jesus is the one true savior blah blah blah and addressing me in a challenging tone, I feel threatened and marginalized. But then I do have a bit of a nervous disorder and the holiday season does overwhelm me so I might be picking up on something that's not really there.
I do feel like Christians should give it a rest though. The whole commercialized holiday is focused on their traditions and their time schedule and their view. If I want to say happy holiday or season's greetings or if I want a menorah up on the display or whatever else, they should just give it to me or whatever group. They are still the spotlight holiday, I just want space to celebrate in my own faith my own way too.

I do tend to say happy holidays in person,
but on gaia I tend to wish merry xmas more frequently, probably because the event is xmas and such.
But I'm an atheist myself, and I tend to have reason's greetings around but I'm not so adamant about it. It's a time of cheer so just be merry naw?
I guess I celebrate a more American Christmas.

*shakes head* Really? Both sides of the fence, I swear I don't know. I'll just sit here in the middle and wonder why in the world it's really so important that people have to make a fuss over nothing but a few words used in December.

Being a Christian, it doesn't offend me when people wish me a happy holiday, or a happy Hanukkah, or a blessed Solstice or whatever anyone celebrates. What Does get to me is when I have been censured in the past for saying Merry Christmas because not everyone celebrates Christmas, but it is demanded that I "tolerate" other religion's seasonal traditions. It's not like there is any tolerating to it, I get excited for anyone's holiday, but because I have never hid the fact that I am a Christian who celebrates "Christmas", I am told I have to "Tolerate" others beliefs and respect them by not using the word "Christmas" or face reprimand.
...and yes... this has really happened to me in RL... believe it or not.
It happened when I worked at Wal-mart... they have backed off since then...
It happened before Wal-mart when I worked at JC Pennys.
... and it happened when I volunteered to help set up a seasonal art exhibition in the city I lived in... a college town, where it was totally cool to celebrate every holiday other than Christmas on campus. stressed A friend of mine wished me a blessed Solstice as she was leaving and I gave her a Merry Christmas in return, and the director walked up to me and chewed me up one side and down the other (we didn't even know each other). It was something my friend and I had wished each other since we were kids, and I told her as much.

As far as wishing well on holidays, I do so as appropriate for the season. I don't know any wiccans IRL, so I don't wish people a happy solstice. I wish my husband well on his religious holidays, and secular holidays. He wishes me well on my own. I don't see anything wrong or offensive in whishing someone a Happy Christmas when it is the Christmas season. I rather feel it is offensive to not wish people a Happy Christmas during Christmastide, just as I feel it is offensive to not wish people well during Hannucha or any other holiday in a specific reference frame. Happy Holidays is nice, but on Christmas and Chrsitmas Eve, its rather silly not to wish the full Happy Christmas.
I truely believe all this politically correctness ends up being rather intolerant towards certain religions, Christianity being one of them. I don't think Christians are totally unworthy of blame, but I do not baste them with blame as some do.
Interesting thought though, some Christians would be offended for people wishing them a Happy Christmas as they do not celebrate it for themselves. Reasoning behind the ban differs between the anti-Chrsitmas sect, but it usually has either some tie to pagan festivals or extreme commercialism. So... some Christians do not wish Happy Christmas even among themselves...
And I have run into them here and there in life... its extremely odd to wish someone a happy celebratory greeting for the birth of their God, and get a rude "you're going to Hell" in reply because I apparently celebrate Christmas.

For me it's all in the spirit of how it's said. If the greeting/parting is genuine then I take it as such. I tend to wish a happy holiday as opposed to christmas if I do not know the religious standing of an individual. With those I know I use whichever phrase is best suited for their religion.

Wow... These are the Christians that I can not stand. There are so many different holidays around the same time as Christmas. They really need to chill out...
And good for AE telling their stores not to say "Merry Christmas"! People get offended when they do to the wrong person, but people get offended when they don't say it at all! There's no pleasing anyone in this world! Why don't we all just become mute and not celebrate anything!?
My husband and I just say "you too" when we are told "Merry Christmas". People seriously need to chill and acknowledge they are not the only people in the world with a religion...
