"Books are stupid." Dimitri protested for what must have been the thousandth time, and no less vehemently than the first time he said it. Just like he had from the beginning, Viktor ignored him, rolling his eyes as he pulled the door to the public library open. Dimitri would have bolted, but he had no doubt that his father could chase him down. He also had no doubt that if he ran, his father would not only chase him down, but would throw him over his shoulder, drag him bodily into the library, and tie him to a chair.
Or the ceiling fan.

Katia was already inside, quite eager to get in. She had immeditely rushed to the Fiction section, and while Viktor was quite the helicopter parent, he trusted the library. And Katia. She could stay out of trouble.
Dimitri, on the other hand?
Not so much.

He scowled and slouched back as his father stopped inside the doors, turning to look at him very seriously.
"Books aren't stupid, Dimitri. They help you think, and learn. Katia reads all the time, and she's near a genius. You could do to follow in her example." He really wasn't pleased with his son. He appreciated the boy's sense of adventure, but when it got him suspended, it went too far. Dimitri CLAIMED he hadn't been TRYING to set the microwave in the lunch room on fire, but there was really no question when they had found it filled with forks.

Dimitri rolled his eyes exaggeratedly, crossing his arms, his scowl deepening. Again, a 'Katia is so great' lecture. Like he needed another one of those.
"Whatever." He muttered. Viktor made a low growling noise, a warning, and Dimitri couldn't help but straighten, though he still stared at the floor.

"Ye're gonna get a book, boy. An' you're gonna read the thing, too."

Before Dimitri could open his mouth and ask how he was going to MAKE him read a book, though he knew it was a stupid question, his father interrupted and continued.

"Ye're gonna come to work to me each day ye're suspended. An' ye're gonna read to me, or Markham, out loud, until ye're done. And when ye're finished one book, we'll get y'another. Understand?"

"What!? Why? I don't want to read to Markham! He smells funny!" He hated his father's assistant! He was snobbier than Katia was!

"Well if you don't want to read, don't get suspended again." It pained Viktor to use reading, of all things, as a punishment for his son, but he really had very little else he could do to him. "An' ye're not gettin' that backpack of yours back for a whole month."

"Wh-what?! Aw, come on, Dad-" He was cut off by Viktor turning him and giving him a gentle push in the direction of the shelves, sputtering as he looked back at him. His face clearly read that he didn't have a choice.
His backpack. As if he was taking away his BACKPACK. That was...that was obscene! Preposterous! It was...
Oh, it was enough to make him cry. His backpack was his lifeline. His adventure kit. Without it, he was missing part of himself!

It wasn't fair. He hadn't MEANT to set the stupid microwave on fire. But Jimmy Jones had wanted to see what happened to forks in a microwave. He'd bet five gold it'd melt. Dimitri had known better, and proved him wrong.
Five gold didn't seem worth losing his backpack.

He knew he had better do as he was told if he wanted his bag back any time soon, and that his father would tan his hide if he didn't find a stupid book, so he wandered off through the shelves, not paying much attention to where he was going. This is probably what ended with him standing, quite lost, in the music section.
He didn't like music.
So how the hell did he get to somewhere with books that weren't filled with quite so much lame?

Echo had joy.

A simple statement, yes, but it held quite a large amount of truth within it. The other day, his father had taken him out to get a case for his new violin, a pretty, fur-lined piece that was insulated enough that he was able to carry the instrument around with him wherever he wanted. It also had two straps; they could be hooked on it a way that he could carry it either in-hand, over his shoulder, or hooked over both shoulders like a backpack. As such, he'd been carrying it with him every single day since then, a case almost the same size that he was on his back.

Today was just as good! Since he had gone out with Matthew, he had managed to cutely whine his way into new winter clothing that was much less bulky than what he had previously been wearing. He had long johns underneath a pair of fleece-ish jean-cut pants and a wide-necked sweater, all topped off with a black peacoat. In reality, he looked more like a girl than a boy now, but so long as he was comfortable, it was a plus.

And now, Matthew was even taking him to the library, so he could get more CDs and tapes and borrow more music books. He was only just learning how to actually read music, but it wasn't for performing anything; he could do that just by listening to the music. No, it was so he could start writing his own masterpieces, and maybe grow up one day to be the next famous composer! Giggling giddily, he bounced on his heels, waiting at the door for Matthew to open it for him.

As soon as the door was open, Echo was gone, silken black locks floating through the air behind him, the top of his head covered by a black fleece beanie, only further convincing all of those around him of the little girl look. Of course, the sight of his face -still looking as though he had recently been hit by a car and scrubbed against the asphalt- was enough to turn people's heads away, too preoccupied with gossiping to question his androgyny any longer.

He arrived at the music section quickly, having memorized the way to get there. Turquoise eyes surveyed the scene excitedly, wiggling where he stood and idly scratching a bruise on his cheek. "Hmm... what do I wan'na get..." he murmured softly, standing on his tiptoes to look over the different signs. He wasn't sure how to read, but he'd memorized the patterns of the different composer's names, so he could tell the difference between what he wanted to bring home and what he didn't.

Dimitri half turned as he heard the sounds of footsteps nearby, quickly spotting a young girl wandering down the aisle, her back to him. He frowned, but decided that even a girl could help him right now, and walked over to her. It was such a pity that he was reduced to reading, and asking girls for help. Good god, what had he sunken to?
He shuddered a bit as he raised his hand to tap on the girl's shoulder, but caught a tiny glimpse of the side of her face.
It looked bad. He pulled back, shocked, and wondered how that could have happened to her? Did she get in a fight? Had somebody hurt her?
Well, either way, it was a pretty gnarly face full of injuries.
And it actually knocked her up a few pegs in Dimitri's book. She had taken whatever gave that to her, and was still standing? Pretty awesome.

"Uh, excuse me, miss..." He said tentatively, tapping the little girl's shoulder. "I don't mean to interrupt whatever you're doing, but do you know how to get out of this crummy section?"

Oops. The 'crummy' bit had just slipped out. He really hadn't meant to insult the section out loud at all. What if she really liked it? What if she never helped him out? He would be wandering around here FOREVER until someone else came and found his starving, shrivelled corpse, upon which rats started to feed-
Well, that wouldn't be so bad. Katia would be totally grossed out by it. He almost grinned. It was kind of cool.

Echo hadn't been given a limit on what CDs he was allowed to bring home with him. He tugged off the black mittens that had been on his hands, letting them dangle -as they were attached to his jacket- and reached up to start collecting CDs. It was at the same moment that his fingertips touched the edge of the first CD that he was tapped gently on the shoulder, blinking in surprise that he was the one being spoken to with the title of 'miss'.

"Miss...?" he asked softly, his androgynous young voice given no contrary evidence to the fact that he was actually just a very (VERY) effeminate boy. The continued question, however, brought a gentle pout to his lips, head tipping to the side and letting his nearly floor-length hair fall over his shoulder, batting his long eyelashes in innocent confusion.

"I dun' think this secshun's crummy. S'got Bey-toven 'n' Chai-kov-skee," Echo mumbled sadly, wiggling a bit. "Don'cha like any musics? Not even the weird, gross, machine-y stuffs on the radio?"

Dimitri missed the 'girl's' confusion at being called Miss, and looked around, rather bored with the supposedly amazing section.

"I don't know, or care what's in this section. I have to find a stupid book. These are CD's." He said, a surly expression fixated on his face. As Echo mentioned the strange names, however, Dimitri frowned. Who were they?
"Beethoven and Tchaikovsky? Who...is that?" He looked at Echo, before blinking, and frowning further. This was certainly a strange little girl. How did her hair get that long anyways? And was this really a section about Music? He didn't HATE it...
"This is the music section?" He looked around. He supposed it made sense; CD's, music...why he hadn't made the connection before, he didn't know.

"...okay, maybe it's not SO crummy, but it doesn't help me at all. My dad wants me to find a book. Not a CD."
