Alright, I'm going to say it right now, I'm severely addicted to yaoi fanfiction. Two fandoms in particular are Yu Yu Hakusho and Inuyasha(I'd lose track if I mentioned all the pairings/triads I've become attached to sweatdrop ) and in alot of the fics when dealing with a demon, there's usually a whole big bonding process that involves the mates to be either biting each other on the neck or, less often, using a knife to cut each other and share blood, both options leaving a significant scar. My question is where does this idea come from? Are there animals in nature that do something like this, some old human ritual I'm not aware of, or did some fan just make it up and it stemmed into a tradition of sorts? I ask because when I'm unable to sleep my mind wanders and thinks up weird questions like this and now this one's really piqued my interest. I've also seen the bonding ritual/mark thing happen in vampire stories, but for some reason I never thought about it until I saw it happening with demons.

I think that it is animals in natures, but i could be wrong.

Okay ive heard this before, but the breaking of skin, biting, sucking blood, and marking can be all traced to past human rituals of ancient times. It can also be said to relate to the animal kingdom between mates and its young.

But many have adapted these things into the modern age as a bonding moment in many fan fics. But is still practised as a sexual practise as well.

Bottom line is its a way of the writer to express the demonic love between 2 characters that would normally never consider love.

the way I see it, it is an old form of human rituals or something and is mostly used with demonic love that some people would think of as hate

Perhaps because in antiquity blood was concidered prechous, life itself. So of cours when dealing with charaters who are not quite human, it seems logical to imagine them bonding in primal ways, and what is more primal than binding with blood.

Another angle is the horror element, many demons seem to live in a world soaked in blood so why would it stop at their enimes, or perhaps showing such vulneribilty is a way of expersing trust and intimacy to their mate?

I don't know the real reason but both of those ideas seemed plausable to me. Hope that helps. wink

The fact is...
That almost every animal (non domesticated mostly but cats and dogs also do) that has a heirarchy system IS in fact based off marking their mates...

Example cats...

males mark the **it out of the females they really.... enjoy. females will too on occation...

dogs will urinate on their mates...

lions fight and the winner, (a tad bloody) is licked by the female they fought over.. tasting his essense in a way

all creatures KNOW that blood is life... and shareing their blood (even in the smallest amout) or touching another's blood is considered bonding...

Besides...

We Humans do it in almost every other way...
We brand our property.... try make it ours... put our names on clothes.. items..blah blah...

Some time along our evolution from cave monkey to present day computer whores... It got stuck in our minds to make our partners... OURS to the point of making it public... to keep them fook them and in some cases kill them.

Blood is thicker than water is much to the different human traditions.

Blood, is a bonding thing.

Blood brothers is one.

Blood mates is another.

And also Blood Partners.

Probably why vamps have it so easy.
