Tiny pale feet padded across the grungy concrete floor, carefully evading pieces of shrapnel and debris that had fallen from the shelves. Pale ivory and bronze wings fluttered daintily as deep, ageless eyes examined the contents, eyes scanning for little interesting bits and baubles. A small light came into the child's eyes as they singled out what they sought. Small, dainty hands reached into the pile of metal gears and sprigots, plucking a small copper cog from the pile and brushing dried oil off of its surface. It was bent and curved, hence why it was on the junk shelf, but in the eyes of the child, it was perfect. A small, serene smile spread across the girl's face as her fingers shut securely around the new-found trinket as she looked back onto the shelf for more.

There was one good thing about living above the pawnshoppe; little Tanis always got the first picks of everything. And by everything, we mean the junk shelf. Not that she minded; she was content to rifle through the oil-and-rust covered bits to find special little bits, like today's find. She didn't mind getting her hands dirty; it was well worth it. Little fingers held the wheel closer to her eyes, the gears in her head turning as she thought of what it could be. Maybe a necklace? Or a brooch? Or a hairpin? The possibilities were endless. After a moment of silent contemplation, the child pocketed the piece and went to look over the rest of the store for other little bits that may have fallen to the floor.

Tanis loved slow days like today's; the weather outside was dreary and the store was nearly empty. And it was quiet; blissfully so. No loud chitter-chatter, no yelling, no crashing as something falls. Just blissful quiet, only slightly marred by the quiet music coming from a radio somewhere behind the counter, the sounds of classical piano music dancing along the air currents of the store and mingling with the dust that hung in the air, scintillating in what little sunlight managed to reach through the age-yellowed windows. The little angel looked completely at ease; the picture of comfort and warmth among the empty store's aisles.

Lisette adjusted the parasol that she was carrying over one shoulder before fidgeting with the shoulder bag that held her sketchpad. She had been out for a walk when the pawnshop had caught her eye, and she let her daintily-clad feet lead her towards it. Perhaps there would be some interesting paintings inside, or some objects that she could use to practice still-life sketches.

As she opened the door and entered, she folded her parasol, her wings giving a gentle flutter as the blonde looked around, taking in the shop's unnatural emptiness and the soft music that was playing from a radio somewhere. Rather than being frightened by how quiet and still the shop was, she smiled to herself, appreciating the stillness and the ability to peruse the items on offer without having to deal with an absurd amount of conversation.

She didn't notice the smaller angel who was also in the shop, not right away, but eventually her gaze landed on the white hair of the younger girl, and a soft, "Oh," escaped her mouth as she clearly noticed the small wings that the child had - was she a Herald, then? One of her own kind? "Hello," she whispered softly, then turned away to examine some paintings that had caught her eye. She didn't want to bother the little one when she was obviously busy doing something else.

Oh, there was a painting that looked interesting; a couple on a picnic with beautiful cherry trees overhead, shedding blossoms onto the dainty forms of the picnickers. . . it was quite lovely, and held a delicacy that she was trying to achieve in her own work. Now if only she could find a price for it - she had some spending money with her, but would it be enough for this beautiful piece?

The small girl jumped at the unexpected noise, dropping the interestingly-curved piece of shrapnel she'd been inspecting. Tanis looked up at the source of the quiet sound, her little hands folding and resting lightly on her stomach. "Hello, ma'am" she murmured, her voice barely above the level of the music that permeated throughout the store. The girl knelt down, gently scooping up the piece of twisted metal; she could figure a use out for it later.

The little angel watched in silence as the girl looked at a painting, looking for something. Padding her way over, the child peered at the painting, a vague look of curiosity gracing her features. "What are you looking for?" she asked, looking up from the painting back to the older girl. "Could help?" she offered, since the proprietor of the store was no where in sight.

Lisette smiled softly, before turning her gaze back to the painting she so admired. "Perhaps... do you know how much this is?" she asked softly, reaching and and brushing a finger about two inches away from actually touching the painting's surface.

"Is this building your home?" she added, still in that quiet tone of voice. After all, she knew many people that lived above shops, so why wouldn't someone live above this one? It made perfect sense to her!

Tanis looked at the painting a moment, assessing it. "Should be sticker on the back with the price." she said, nodding once. "If not, might have fallen off on the shelf." Well, she hoped it'd be there, anyways. If it wasn't, she'd just have to go find Mr. Barlowes and hope he wasn't in one of those bad moods he'd been afflicted with lately.

The little girl nodded, before pointing up. "Live upstairs with Mama." she said, a small smile working it's way back onto her face. "Where is your home?" she asked, curious about this new person.

"Thank you very much, miss," Lisette said, reaching out and turning the painting around. Sure enough, there was a price sticker on the back, and it was well under the amount of cash she had with her. She might even have enough money for other things as well! A pleased smile spread across the quiet, porcelain-doll like herald's face, and she carefully picked up the painting, her wings fluttering with the movement.

Turning, the blonde regarded the younger child with her deep blue-violet gaze. "I live a distance from here, in a house that's just a house. It's noisy there though, so I visit quiet places often," she said softly.

Tanis frowned slightly, her smile fading just as quickly as it had came, at the other girl's statement. She lived in a house...that was just a house? Not a home? The young child couldn't wrap her head around such a notion. "You're house...isn't home?" she asked, unable to hide the awe and twinge of horror in her tone. The very thought was hard to stomach to the girl. The poor older girl!

"Everyone should have a home." she said solemnly, nodding her head once. "Everyone." The last part was added for emphasis, in case the older girl didn't get her point. Or, maybe it was to reassure herself of her claim. Her papery, whispery tone gave no hints or credence to either possibility.
