Adalia wasn't entirely sure of what to do.
Apparently, Devlin was coming over today; she didn't know why, or of there was a reason behind the visit, but the fact was that he was coming over. Now, Adalia rarely - if ever - let people into her apartment, much less men. Having people over wasn't something that she was particularly comfortable with, and the only ones who ever really came into her home were very, very good friends.
However, Devlin was very persistant. Very persistant, and very dense. Perhaps that was why she'd finally relented, saying that he could come at 2:30, when she was done with her classes for the day. Hopefully, this fact wouldn't turn disasterous for her. "Alice, pick up your toys, okay sweetie?" the dark-haired girl said as she tried to clear the photos off her coffee table - a tryign task, what with how many there were. Another reason that she never had people over was because her photography covered EVERYTHING. Her apartment was a mess, really.
"Lice, ali!" The little shadow girl skipped over to where her dolls and blocks lay scattered about on the ground and began picking them up so she could put them in the chest that Adalia had purchased for her just earlier this week - apparently, she'd gotten tired of tripping over dolls. "Li?" Adalia certainly seemed flustered about Devlin coming over - she hoped that her guardian would be alright. She got so jittery when she was nervous!

Devlin was the happiest elf on Gaia. At least, he thought he was. He was floating on air, happily oblivious to Mr. Next Door neighbor's issues. He was going to see Adalia today! In less than ten minutes, he was sure, he would be arriving at her appartment.Needless to say the elf was excited, but that wasn't the only reason he was happy.
He had been able to sort out what the fuzzy thing had been on his rug only a few days ago. A baby! An adorable, furry baby whom the elf had seen fit to name Elijah. He was planning on introducing Adalia to him--though the baby seemed to do little more than sleep. "So Elijah," he started, looking down at the half asleep infant in his arms. "I want you on your best behavior. No messes--or crying, okay? Especially not crying. I don't think Adalia would like that. You're awfully loud, and she gets frightened so easily." And so saying, the elf made his way to his friend's apartment. He knocked on the door and waited cheerfully.
He was absolutely sure this would be a great day.

Adalia jumped a little as she heard the knock on the door and could already guess who was waiting on the other side. The dark-skinned girl set the photo album that she'd been moving down on one of the end tables in her living room and scurried over to the door. She peeked into the door's peephole, and sure enough, she saw Devlin on the other side.
Her anxiety immediately swelled, but she quickly forced it down as she opened the door, offering the elf on the other side a timid smile. "H...H-Hello, Devlin." She always felt awkward around him, but then again, she was the same around all men. "Come in..." As she moved to let him in, however, her eyes caught something in his arms - something small, fuzzy, and admittedly adorable. It was clearly a baby of some kind. "Are you...b-babysitting again?"
"Lice!" The small form of a shadow girl with a grinning face floating next to her loped towards the doorway, stopping just behind Adalia. "Ali, licelice, li!" She smiled up at Devlin, clearly happy to see him again despite her guardian's nervousness. She couldn't help but feel disappointed by the lack of Puff being there, but seemed to perk up as she noticed the bundle in Devlin's arms. "Li?" What was that?

Devlin briefly wondered if all his meetings with Adalia would be like this. She was so timid, like a rabbit. But perhaps, like a rabbit, she could be tamed. He beamed at her as she invited him in. "Thank you," he said.
He paused when she asked if he was babysitting and shook his head. "Well, kind of," he said. "This red haired guy and this not very nice man gave me a vial and--well..." he held Elijah up, disturbing the baby from his nap. "His name's Elijah," Devlin added, watching as his son grabbed hold of his tail and began to suck on it.
"Guess he's hungry," the elf sighed, moving to take a bottle out of the napsack he'd brought. "He always is. I told him to be good today."

Needless to say, Adalia was quite surprised - and a little confused - when she heard Devlin's explanation as to how he'd gotten the baby. Someone had just...given it to him? Really? That didn't make any sense! On top of that, the young woman couldn't recall ever seeing a baby quite like Elijah before - true, there were many different races scattered across Gaia, but he was the first FUZZY one that she could recall ever seeing!
"Elijah..." Despite her timidness, Adalia couldn't help but smile at the baby. How could she not? He was a BABY, for crying out loud! They were bloody adorable, fuzzy or not! Actually, Elijah being sick made him even more adorable. "W-Well, I don't think you have to worry about that." She couldn't imagine a baby that young misbehaving. All they really did was eat and sleep, right? "Come in; you can feed him at the table, if you'd like..."
Baby? What was a baby? "Lice!" Alice gaped when Devlin lifted the little fuzzy creature and stared for a moment. "Ali, li!" He was so cute! Was that a baby? She liked babies! Could she play with Elijah? She hoped so! Perhaps she and Puff could play with Elijah sometime!

Devlin beamed and walked inside. "Thank you," he said. It seemed Elijah was making a good impression already. The elf studied the apartment before looking back at Adalia. She really was beautiful, even when she was nervous. Especially when she smiled.
He sat down on a chair, taking Elijah's bottle out of his napsack. "Still warm," he told the infant. "No complaints, okay?" He looked up at Adalia and flashed her a smile. "Sometimes he's greedy," he said. "Hey Alice," he greeted the shadow cheerfully. "Do you want to meet Elijah? I'm sure when he's older, you two will be friends." He focused on the baby in his arms and smiled. "Maybe you'd like to hold him after I feed him."

It was hard for a baby to NOT make a good impression - at least, that's how it was in Adalia's mind. After all, there was little that a baby could do other than eat, sleep, and cry, and they most certainly couldn't help things like that! "W-Well, I'm sure that he can't help it." the young woman said, managing a timid smile at Devlin. "Babies are just like that..." The elf certainly seemed to be doing well with the baby though. She hadn't thought that someone as oblivious as he was would do very well with a child, but he seemed to be managing just fine. Perhaps there was more to him than she'd originally thought.
"Lice!" Of course Alice wanted to meet Elijah! The little shadow girl would most certainly enjoy making new friends wherever she could! "Ali, li!!" She would be allowed to hold him after he was done eating? Oh, she was so excited! She'd make sure that she was careful with him, of course - Elijah looked so little! "Lice lice!" She'd most definitely have to cautious with him.

"All babies are?" Devlin looked somewhat doubtful. "I didn't know that." He flashed a smile in Adalia's direction before returning his focus on his baby. "He's good usually," he added. "Not like my cousin Vate's baby, Leyla. He said she could talk the day she was born." The elf gave a shudder. "I'm convinced she's some kind of alien."
He paused, and looked to Alice and smiled. "Okay," he said. "You can hold him now, I think. Sit down, alright?" He carefully bent down to the shadow's level. "I don't want him to fall--" he didn't want his only companion to break. He had been extra careful with this baby, and planned on keeping him.

A...baby who could talk since the day she was born? Really? Was that even possible? Adalia didn't think so, but Devlin didn't appear to be lying. It certainly sounded like a strange child, either way - not that the children that she usually dealt with were normal. Alice, Luka, and now Elijah were definitely not kids that one would consider to be 'normal'. "Really? That's...different." She very much doubted that the baby that Devlin spoke of was an alien, but he definitely sounded like she was quite special.
"Lice!" Alice immediately plopped down onto the floor and held her hands out to Devlin, clearly excited about holding the baby. "Ali, li!" She'd make sure that she was careful. She was always careful, and she certainly didn't want to hurt little baby Elijah.
"Make sure to hold his head up, Alice..." Adalia added in from nearby, smiling a little at the shadow. It was kind of cute really, seeing how enthusiastic Alice was about holding the baby.

Devlin nodded in agreement. "I've heard she's nice," he added as an afterthought, though his expression said otherwise. "I've yet to meet her... I'm a bit wary of her, really. My cousin Vate adores her, but I'm not eager to be taken to outerspace as some kind of experiment." Someone had been watching the science fiction channel too much.
The elf carefully placed Elijah into Alice's arms, trusting the shadow to take care of his baby. "Hold his head up," he echoed Adalia. He wasn't sure what would happen if they didn't hold his head up, though. Would it fall off? Would Elijah's neck go backwards, and his head would be upside down forever? He beamed at Alice's excitement.
"Do you have something called a camera?" Devlin asked. "My cousin Vate said it's a fast way to paint a picture. Do you know how to do it?" He didn't; and he considered himself a skilled painter.

"...right then." Adalia decided that perhaps it would be better to just not ask more question about the strange baby. She somehow doubted that the baby would take Devlin as an experiment, as he seemed to think, but she wasn't about to put her two cents in either. She would just leave well enough alone for the time being.
"A camera?" The dark skinned girl was a little surprised that Devlin would ask such a question - there were photographs littered all about her apartment after all. The answer was rather obvious, she though. Devlin DID seem to be a little naive though, so perhaps she shouldn't have been surprised. "I have a couple, actually..." She glanced to where Alice was cooing happily at little Elijah before returning her gaze to the elf on her couch. "Did you want to take a picture of the two of them?" She had to admit, it WOULD make a rather adorable photograph...
The young woman moved to a nearby cupboard and opened it, plucking a black, shiny camera from its shelf. "Did you want to do it? Or...would you rather that I do it...?" She wasn't entirely sure if Devlin would know how to use the device.

"Is that really what they're called?" Devlin asked with some amazement. "You have more than one?" The elf's eyes widened in wonder as he stared at Adalia. She had more than one of the amazing objects that painted pictures instantly? He knew Vate had one. But more? Adalia must be special! Or rich! Or some sort of princess.
"Oh yes!" He said with some excitement. "Could you? I'm not really versed in such tenkology." Well, that was what he thought Vate had called it. What humans used in place of magic and other things.
"Maybe you'll teach me how to use it someday?" he asked. "I'm a painter...how does one paint a picture instantly?"

Adalia could honestly say that she'd never seen anyone so excited over the prospect of a simple camera. Well, KIDS tended to get excited, but Devlin most certainly was not a kid. "Well, yeah; I do photography a lot, so I need to have more than one."
Despite her previously timid demeanor, Adalia managed to smile at Devlin's excitement. "Alright, alright, give me a moment to set up." The young woman turned the device on and flicked a few knobs on the camera as the device sprung to life. "It's pretty easy to use, actually - I can show you as soon as I'm done with this." She took a step back, adjusting herself so that she had both Alice and Elijah in the screen before calling to the little shadow. "Over here, Alice; look up sweetie!" She grinned when the little shadow looked over, reluctant to pull her face away from the baby in her lap. "Alright, now when I count to three, you give me your nicest smile, okay? 1...2...3!"
"Lice!" Alice grinned, giving a big smile as Adalia's camera flashed, capturing the photo in an instant. "Li, Ali!"
"It's not really painting a picture - the camera just takes a still of the scene. The machine then uses ink to make it." She supposed that it was KIND of like painting, but there was definitely a huge different between the time it took to take a shot with a camera, and to paint a piece. "To use it, you would use this button to turn it on." She shifted the camera in her grip so that Devlin could see. "This knob lets you zoom on, and this button allows you to actually take the photo. Make sense?"

"Photography?" Devlin was amazed with the very concept. It really was like painting a picture instantly! Just like his cousin had told him. He watched carefully as Adalia fiddled with the strangely shaped buttons on the device, hoping to gather knowledge from watching her do so. It certainly didn't look easy to use, like the woman said.
She seemed less nervous now, more in her element. Devlin was pleased. And she had promised to show him how after she painted the picture! He beamed at her in clear excitement. He had to back up and blink a few times as the camera flashed, though.
That had been unexpected. Where had that bright light come from?
"It's not a painting?" Devlin asked, still fascinated even upon hearing his theory had been incorrect. "Oooh. Can I try?" He reached for the camera.
