Vertigo's current situation is, well, less than expected-- but certainly not very surprising, he supposes. After all, he's nearly the definition of 'not committed' at least not unless he, well, commits himself. Though that hadn't been the case when he'd decided on a night of fun with Does-Bite-Hard, the doe who is, and has been, carrying his children. His children!

The idea excites and faintly terrifies him.

Of course, once he'd found out-- well, he couldn't simply leave the poor doe. So he'd stuck around, and watched as her belly grew larger and larger. But recently, he's taken to a bit of wandering in order to take time to himself, and as he makes his way around a bend of cypress, he finally pauses, and lets out a heavy sigh.

He's anxious, excited, and worried, as, perhaps, any new father might be (at least any new father who sticks around), and it's been showing more and more, the closer Bite has come to giving birth. He finds himself hoping desperately that all the little sacs will be healthy, and the baby foals inside. It's a strange feeling, this weight of responsibility. A burden, yes, but also a source of some happiness and pride.

Just on the other side of that bend of cypress Vertigo is likely to spot the majestic crane that is standing still, barely even breathing and concentrating really really hard. What is it that she is so determined to stay focused on? Well, she is trying to see if she could fool any of the local bugs out of stasis. She had seen several bugs in the area that were out waaaay past their time of year, but even in this lethargic state they were still rather difficult to catch. So here she was, standing upright directly next to a tree and waiting to see if the spider that she had watched crawl slowly, almost painfully, around to the other side of the trunk would ever make it's way back around to her side.

She could be amazingly patient when she really really tried, and strangely enough, something this simple could hold her attention. But she did have a sort of affinity for spiders... so maybe that had something to do with it. Or maybe she was just bored and looking for something to do, as she hadn't come across anyone at all in quite a while now.

Just as she was thinking about that, there was hoof-falls to be heard, nearing her position next to this particular trunk. If she had external ears they would have flicked over to listen better, but seeing as she was a bird at that very moment, she couldn't very well do that. So instead of drawing attention to herself, she instead decided to play dead... or... not there... ghost! Yes, she was playing ghost. Surely if she didn't move, the passer-by would not see the bright golden plumage standing up against this dark trunk. Now she just needed to hold her breath and keep perfectly still....

Seemingly alone, Vertigo makes his way a bit further into the thick Cypress trees. He's just about to take a turn he's never explored before when, out of the corner of his eye, he catches a hint of bright yellow through the dense foliage. Intrigued, he heads toward it.

The crane that comes into view is, he thinks, one of the most spectacularly colored, and patterned, ones of the species he's ever seen before. Though it simply stands there, stock still, as he stares at it. Perhaps he's frightened it?

"Hey there, crane. I won't hurt you," he smiles a bit-- and he does seem very kind when he does that. "What are you doing out here all alone? Though I suppose someone could ask me that, too... what with Bite being pregnant, and at the den alone. Though I do plan to bring her back some of her favorite berries and fish later...." The buck doesn't seem to find it odd at all to talk to a crane. Though whether or not this is because he's just strange, or just very open, is difficult to tell.

She does her very best to stay still and become invisible, but just when she thinks that she'd won... she loses. The passer-by is a buck and he makes his way closer and then starts talking to her! Can't he see that she had been playing Ghost? She continues with her statuesque pose for a minute or two, but he continues to talk, so she finally calls her game quits. He had obviously won this one, no use in trying to convince him she was part of the tree as he had already identified her as a crane.

Her head tilts one way, looking at him with that eye, and then turns the other way to look at him with the other eye. She looks him over and her beak opens once or twice only to close again, more of a lip-smack than an attempt at speaking. Her voice, when she speaks, seems to come from all around, echoing and heavy and yet very feminine in it's nature.

"Pregnant, you say?" A pause of mere moments, before she continues, "How many? Little bundles, I mean, of course. Have you counted them yet?" She tilts her head once more, as if expecting him to have an answer. Of course, any regular kimeti would have no idea how many babies there were inside of a pregnant mother, with the possible exception of a doe that has carried many clutches in the past. She, Webweave concluded, would probably have a pretty good idea of how many she was carrying, through sheer experience. But all the same, she didn't really think about whether this male would know how many or not, because that was something that she had been able to do ever since the swamp blessed her with her other half. Memories, new talents, as well as this feathery form that she could change in to at will.

Vertigo blinks, startled, as the voice surrounds him. There is no one else, that he can see, with him other than the crane, and the experience causes a tingle of nerves down the back of his neck. He's not really frightened, exactly, but he is certainly surprised and, to be honest, a little awed. He's heard tales of the legendary kimeti, of course. Those capable of taking the form of various swamp creatures, and granting blessings to kimeti who are in need, or want, of them. Though he has never met one. And any doubts as to their existence are quite shattered.

At least, he thinks, it explains the shear beauty of this particular crane.

After a moment, he catches himself from staring for longer than might be considered polite, and nods. "...Yes, she is. And, I have no idea. This is my first time you see-- er, being a father, that is. At least, the first that I'm aware of... I couldn't just leave her, you understand, after I knew." Though, of course, once they are birthed, he doesn't think he will be staying much longer. After all, while he has come to feel affection for Bite, he knows it isn't love.

He sighs, softly, "I only hope that they will be healthy, and strong, and good. And, of course, that Bite is, too."

A warm laugh seems to bubble out of the air around them, almost a physical presence in the area. He was an adorable specimen, that was for sure. Her expression seemed to lighten a bit, if even such intricacies could be noticed on an avian frame.

He seemed a little... uncollected... but his heart was in the right place. He had, after all, stuck around for this long! Most bucks wouldn't have even stuck it out for this long. She looked him over once more as she mulled over what he had just said. He didn't know how many bundles of life... but he wanted them all to be safe and healthy... and the mother too! How very considerate of him!

Without saying anything, the crane slowly picked her way forwards, carefully placing each and every step until she stopped right in front of the buck. She bowed her head a touch so that if she rolled her eyes up, she could just barely see his entire face in her peripherals. Her forehead almost touching his, she looked deep into his eyes, wanting to know for sure that he wasn't just saying what he had said, and in fact really did mean it. After all, she didn't want to give a blessing to just anyone! He wanted to know he was being true.

The light sense of laughter causes him to relax a little more, as well, and he offers another faint smile toward the crane. Though as she approaches him (he knows for sure that she is, in fact, a she since she's spoken), Vertigo becomes a bit nervous once more. The entire experience feels surreal and intense, and not, at the same time. Later, he will find himself restless with remembering the experience, but, for now, he is simply enthralled.

He doesn't move away, but lets himself remain still as the crane looks deep into his eyes. He finds himself matching his gaze, and has the curious sense that this crane, this legendary kimeti, can see right into his soul--- but he says nothing. Perhaps, he is unable to speak. After a moment, he blinks, and the sensation seems to lessen, though he doesn't quite understand what it is she's been looking for.

All he really knows is that, having unexpectedly found this doe, he hopes that she will grant his hopes for healthy children. That she will help ease his worries about them being fit, and sound, and that Does-Bite-Hard should be the same.

Though she had indeed had the intention of looking into him and finding his soul... whether she could actually manage to do that or not is really still a mystery. All the same, she looked deep into this buck's eyes and looked for something. Anything that could throw her initial character-analysis off. But she didn't find anything. All she could see or feel was a warmth from this buck that seemed to tell of happiness and well-being. No, he was not hiding anything from her, and that was enough for her. She wanted to know if he had been deceiving her about the pregnant mare, but she couldn't find any lies in his words or his eyes. That was enough for her.

Slowly sliding her eyes closed, the crane gently pushed her head forward, making her forehead touch his ever so lightly, softly. There she remained for a few moments as she internally asked the Motherfather to work through her and grant this buck's wishes. Whether he heard it or not, as she wasn't sure if he would hear it in his head too, or if it was just in her own, her request was this:

"Motherfather, I ask you to listen to this simple request. This buck just recently became a father and has put in all the effort any caring parent could. And all he wants in return is the safety and well-being of each and every one of the bundles of life and joy, and the good health of the mother in question. The will is in your hands now."

Finally, a decision seems to be made, and as the soft, feathered head of the crane touches his, Vertigo closes his eyes. The crane doesn't seem to say anything out loud, and yet, there is the curious sense that something has been made. There's no way he could really have hoped to explain it to anyone, but he feels more at ease. There are no real words that he can discern, but there is a definite sort of voice, a presence, that, for just a fleeting moment, seems to touch him. He's certain it has something to do with the crane, but just what it is-- he has no idea.

Then, just as suddenly and gently, it's gone, but the sense that something good has happened remains. His worries seem lessened, somehow, yet, curiously, because of it, he feels even more anxious than ever to check on Does-Bite-Hard, just to confirm for his own eyes that she, and their unborn children, are alright.

"..Thank you," he says it softly, and sincerely, even though he doesn't quite understand what has taken place. He only knows that this legendary has helped him in some great way, and his gratitude is true.

"Could I... would it be appropriate to ask your name? I'd like to remember it when I think of this later, as I'm sure I will."
PostPosted: Thu Dec 09, 2010 4:53 pm

Just as softly as she had applied it, she then draws her head back, and just as slowly her eyes open once more, this time, calmer in a way and more relaxed. Whether the Motherfather heard her blessing or not, only time would tell, but it was now said and done, so it was up to fate from here on out.

The buck seemed more at ease too, which Webweave was happy to see, and she wondered vaguely if he really understood what had just happened, or if in fact he had heard the words that she sent off on the wings of the wind.

In response to his question, she puffed out her chest and raised her regal head, "My name is Webweave, walker of the swamp. Take care, and travel well." And with that, she stalked back over to the tree and resumed her intense staring at the tree. If he should try to talk to her again, it would fall on deaf ears and she would act as if there was nothing going on around her except for the slowly scurrying spider. That was how well she could tune things out when she wanted to, but she doubted she would be disturbed by that buck any more. He seemed to need to walk or run or something. He definitely had a lot on his mind, if anyone was to ask her. But she remained silent, having attention only for this very tedious task at hoof-- claw.

"Webweave.." He repeats it, as if to better ingrain it into his memory-- not that he's likely to ever forget it. Vertigo smiles at her, "And I am Vertigo. I hope we might meet again some day, if only to talk. But for now, I must get back to my den with Bite."

He turns, after she goes back to staring at her tree, and heads back the way he came. By the time he gets back, the daylight is waning-- having spent some time picking branches full of juicy berries, and catching a fat fish for their dinner. With immense relief, he steps into the darkness of their den, and gives Bite an affectionate nuzzle, glad to see she's alright, and settles in for the night. For some reason, though, he doesn't recount his tale to her, of his strange meeting with Webweave. Though he does think about it long into the night.
