Name:
Brian Sakai

Age:
17

Occupation:
Full time student, part time worker at Durem Depot

Bio:
Brian's family had moved to Durem from Barton following the fall of Gambino's tower. The low prices of houses in the damage site were a gold mine to the Sakai's. They bought two houses, across from one another, planning ahead to combat the soon to come depression with the fall of Gambino.
Brian acclimated to school well, his marks faltered with the location change but he didn't lose his athletic prowess. His sport was track, pole vault to be specific. He loved the feeling of flying through the air. It was as if up above the ground, 13 feet up, he was free. Free of all the pressure at home to start something profitable after graduating. Free of the stress of having to learn all about those blasted rings that would save them from the Animated. Free of the pressure of the grades he strove so hard to fix. Free of the responsibilities, pains, decisions and problems associated with growing up. 13 feet up, he was free. And although his parents didn't know it, he had been at the "library" for weeks now, tendering a secret passion: fencing. The fluidity and the speed of the foil excited him, forced him to see every bend and turn as he did with vault. His 20/20 vision did him well here. And while late nights became a norm from his "lack of being able to focus in the library", his soul was content.

"Don't forget to sleep!" Moira called to him as her black Gothics padded across the tiles of Durem Depot. Brian didn't grace her with an answer, and she apparently didn't need one as the door closed behind her with a thud and a click. Brian chuckled to himself, deciding that if she was going to head home, he'd better do the same. He turned the lights out, and was reaching to turn off Moira's Raver-blasting radio when it caught static, and then became dull toned.

"Front line report. Grunnies, the diabolical creatures of the Gambino Company have been spotted swarming along the outskirts of the Reclamation Facility. It is warned for everyone to lock their doors and use any rings that you posses. I repeat, Grunnies...diab...the...."

As the radio worsened, so did Brian's composure. They're not known to mass, at least not in the city. Or so that's what he had learned in his ring class: that when in doubt, flee to the city. Brian spun the dial and heard the faint click of the radio powering down. His nerves were rising, as one who suddenly knows they're not alone begins to "hear" it, feel it; their vulnerability suddenly multiplied tenfold and their hearts go to their mouths, filled with fear that was previously unaware. He grabbed his bag and made his way to the back, eyes warily searching every which way, as if he was already surrounded.

As Brian turned to lock the back door a breeze picked up. He clicked the lock into place and was shadowed and looking up, he saw clouds drift across lazily and obscure the moon with a tint. Brian shook his head, and made way for home. Speed was of the essence. He had no rings, as all students were required to finish two semesters of ring class before taking the proficiency test. The wind didn't abate, and the breeze was rather crisp, and halfway home Brian's cheek was feeling smooth and frozen.

...

Instinct kicked in, and Brian ran. The silence killed him, ate him away as he knew he'd be caught. They were fast, and the most efficient was to kill them was range. He could hear the "pad-pad-pad-pad" of the feet behind him, feeling the breath of the creature on his legs as he swung a hard right, down into an alley behind H.R Wesley. It had been gated recently, as Edmund had been plauged with broken windows constantly due to the alley baseball games of Durem children. Gate. Like vault, Brian could see himself up 13 feet...and out of the Grunny's reach. He pushed to the gate, readying to jump when he saw it. It skid around the corner, and then crouched into a stalking position.

It couldn't have been taller than his knee, yet he was afraid as if he were the tiny one. Brian's focus came back to the gate, wondering if it would hold up between he and the creature when the "pad-pad-pad-pad" resumed behind him.
Surrounded. He swore, jumping up and grabbing, climbing, flying up the gate for his life. The grunny opposite his side of the fence charged, seeming to not see the gate supporting Brian's frame. He yelped and flinched, feeling the tiny mass smack into the fence at his thigh level. Still he climbed, not stopping any more. He scaled to the top, sitting awkwardly on it like one would do on a horse, or bicycle. The green things paced at the middle of their respective sides, making barking sounds, feral sounds.

Brian knew time was of the essence. He was probably the only live snack outside for them. The only one defenseless, solitary and cornered. The longer it took, the longer it'd take him to safely make it-
NO. The thought registered with unease and horror as Brian thought of guiding the grunnies to his home. It couldn't happen; he wouldn't let it happen. Adrenaline began to course through his veins. The only way to prevent that was to drag the grunnies somewhere else. And the only way to do that was to..."Fight back." Brian said to himself, which earned him a chorus of yapping and "barking" from the grunnies at recognition of life in their catch.

Brian had it figured out. He'd move forward, in the direction he had been going and then out the West gate. The problem was how to fight back. He had nothing on him but his bag...at least, he thought that was it. He swung his bag over to check and it slipped off his shoulder, as it had been prone to do. He reached out with his hand, only to realize that it allowed the bag to slide off. But he pulled back too late, hesitating from the awkward position he had on the fence and the bag fell. THUD. The grunnies both darted towards the noise, one at the fence, the other at his bag. Whatever happened, it was time to get down as the grunnies were distracted. He hoisted himself over and down, scaling down the gate quickly, barely getting footholds fast enough. The grunny lunged for the bag and Brian turned in time to lash out with his foot, giving it a resounding shot to the underside, sending it flying back into a water pipe on the building across from Edmund's.

Things were different on the ground. Brian was turning to get his bag as he saw a glint. He hesitated a second between going for his bag and the glint when the grunny lunged at him. He lunged left, for the glint. His hand closed on a cold curve, and his heart hammered. Finally, something went right. He turned up and over his right shoulder, bringing the handle of the bat down across the grunny's head.

Brian ran for his bag, glints of green sparkling on it. He could only guess at what it was but shouldered the bag anyway, swallowing down his nausea. He kept a strap firmly grasped in his left hand, the upturned bat still weighed in his right. Then the grunny rushed him once more. Brian didn't have time to turn the bat over, so his fencing came into play. Although the tip was much heavier, he rounded it over the grunny's head, and jabbed it at its jaw, sending it sprawling over his right shoulder. He saw the green ooze pouring from its body, the dents and black circles on the leathery flesh.

Brian ran. The c***k against the fence alerted him of the grunny's impact. He sprinted out, running wildly with his bag swinging behind him and the upturned bat flailing about. He turned down two corners, ending up at the base of the clock tower. Over his breathing he heard it, slower now though. Pad--pad--pad--pad. It was giving chase.

Brian ran to the door and rattled against it, the padlock clinking against the wood. A quick swear, and then it was behind him. There was no time for a swing, so he turned with the bat slanted, a weak attempt to parry the unknown attack. The grunny's teeth met the metal, grazing his fingers and sending a feeling of moisture over his knuckles. Brian flung the end out, throwing the grunny like a projectile. He didn't have time to watch; he pivoted quickly and brought the resulting swing down on the lock, denting it. Another swear, and he went to town on the lock, breaking the hook which resulted in the chain parting at the door. He bolted in running for the staircase that led to the top.

Brian's steps resounded in the empty tower. He looked up briefly, the moonlight streaming through the clock's face and the ropes from the bells hanging dormant in the center. Though the tower had been renovated, the ropes were still used when emergencies happened, or for school trips. Tonight though, it hadn't been given the chance to ring. Nothing was making sense to Brian. Questions though, were time consuming of that which he had none of.

As if telekinetic, the pad--pad--pad--pad rushed to him. Lost in his daydreaming, he turned and swung his bag into the grunny, catching it in its wrecked face. He left the bag to it and ran, the slowly winding stairs flowing under his feet.

Brian labored to climb. He wasn't in the best condition to be doing stairs. He ran his hand over the railing every so often, to keep him steady. His pace was gradually slowing. He stopped to listen, turning to look down the stairwell. He must have been 4, 5 flights up. But, where was the grunny? The bat felt heavy, his legs burnt, and his lungs were hammering. His eyes searched every step, looking for any sign of green.

Then the moon went out. Panic flared up in Brian like an allergic reaction. He stumbled backwards, trying in his haste to move up the stairs backwards as quick as he could as his eyes began to adjust. Then the pad-pad-pad-pad came back, and Brian tripped over himself, falling on a step. The grunny lunged at him, and Brian's foot came up, but late. The grunny caught itself on his shoe and bit into it, teeth sinking into the rubber and breaking the skin on his heel. Brian yelled, kicking his leg furiously, trying to free himself of the terror. His tried to crab up backwards up the stairs and the bat slipped from his right hand. He grabbed out with his left and the grunny finally let go, deciding to fly for the bat. The sound of the grunny's teeth trying to find a hold on the bat filled the tower. As his hand closed on the handle, the light came back. And then, Brian reacted instinctively, whirling the bat to the wall, with the grunny between the metal and the stone. The grunny made a sound of gurgling as its body was crushed between the bat and the stone, its limbs falling limp.

Brian dropped the bat, grunny and all. His eyes were wide and dilated, he turned and heaved on the steps below him. After a few shudders and a good number of breaths, Brian turned his eyes back to the grunny. It was bruised and bleeding profoundly in many places. Its paws were lined with little claws, and its teeth were still covered with saliva, which was dripping down the edge of the bat. Brian shuddered again, but his stomach had nothing left to give. Brian lifted the bat by the handle, the grunny's teeth scraping against the metal as the bat slid out of its mouth. Covered in green slime, Brian ran the metal against the steps around him, transfering most of the slime to the wood, leaving the bat with odd spots of discoloration. Brian had to move, to get away from...it. It wasn't a grunny any longer. It just, resembled a broken plush toy. That...leaked...green. His head swam with the smell, the smell of mold and bile. Brian turned, climbing slowly now, almost leisurely. It was all he could do to not lose himself. He knew there was another, the one he had left at the gate. And who knows what else there was. Brian cursed his luck to be out, but then corrected himself and thanked his luck, for keeping him alive.
Looks like fencing wasn't a bad choice. he said to himself, for it had been between fencing and archery. A lot of luck the bat would've done with fencing. He imagined himself throwing the bat at his first encounter with the grunny and he allowed himself a small smile, the first and most nearly the only one of the night.

It came, as he knew it would. He didn't hear it at first, as he had been thinking over how his family was. He wondered if Dad had made it home, or if Mom was using her rings. He had only seen her do it once, when a Garlic had found its way into her wash basket. The Scaredy Cat ring had been used with such speed that he barely had time to see it come out of her apron. But the effect had lingered in the air, and even Brian had felt compulsed to run out the gate, and he did. But he tripped over the wash basket and tumbled over, the paranoia and fear falling out of him.

At first, he thought he was crazy. The image of the limp body slumped against the stairs seeping ooze was plauging his brain, flashing across his mind's eye with periodic spasms of his stomach. But then he remembered: there had been two. And then the panic set in again. Like a fever it rose across his body, coursing his frame with nerves. He started up the steps faster, padpadpadpad echoeing up to him. He wasn't going fast enough. A woozy head and a fatigued frame couldn't compete with a rabid hunger. Brian didn't even make it up another flight before the grunny got him. So he turned, leveling the bat down at the creature, and made the first move. He swung it down to bash the grunny and it side jumped out of the way and went for Brian's neck. He fell back, and the grunny flew over his head. Brian quickly got up and turned to the now higher grunny, which was crouching and yapping at him. He was beat.

Brian felt a like he had weights on his arms and legs. The grunny, however, looked ready to rumble. Two steps above him and at eye level, the grunny was sizing up his prey. Brian supported himself against the wall, the bat loose in his grip tipped against a step above him. What was he going to do? The grunny, it seemed, decided for him. It bristled itself, growling at him and crouched for a jump. Brian's grip on the bat handle instantly viced on the metal, the bat weighing 200 pounds to his weary limb. The grunny lept down, teeth sinking into Brian's calve before he could bring the bat up. He yelled, pain fueling his arms with fire, the bat whipping up and slamming into the step but only after the grunny had sprinted down the stairs. The bat had crushed the step, a sizable hole smashed into the edge. Checking his leg, Brian found that his pants had taken on a color of emerald green around the puncture holes. His leg itself had been pierced in two spots, the area inbetween lined with indentaions from the grunny's other teeth. The skin was open, and blood was beginning to coagulate against the green saliva the grunny had left. Brian turned his head away from it, and climbed two or three more steps, he couldn't tell, and sat down wearily, contemplating why in the world the grunny had ran.

As Brian sat nursing his leg, he heard the engine of a car. Finally, some help. He worked his jaw, which had been clenched tight most of the night and rose to his feet when he heard the car back up into the clock tower doors. He looked down the middle of the stairwell, seeing the reverse lights flicker across the door. A door opened...and didn't close. Brian watched with horror as what he could only call a zombie moved into the doorway of the clocktower. With the reverse lights still on, Brian saw the little green grunny perched atop of the zombie's head and saw it look up at him. It growled, and the zombie looked up, as if seeing the stairs for the first time. Then it saw Brian, and it was suddenly propelled to the stairs with surprising agility. Not lightning quick like the grunnies, but more agile than a zombie would have been. Brian moved up slowly, gingerly, taking all precautions not to set weight on his injured leg, which was numbing. It must be an effect of the grunny's. he thought, watching the stairwell and the oncoming zombie. If he moved up, space was limited. But if he moved down...the realization smacked into Brian and he swore at himself for his stupidity. He began to move down, increasing his retreat range with each step towards the zombie. When it was no more than ten steps down from him, and they were halfway up the stairwell, he raised the bat and swung for home. The grunny yalped at the zombie in time for it to raise a pale hand clothed by a white and bloodied lab coat sleeve and take the brunt of Brian's swing. The crack of the arm was audible in the chamber, the zombie's arm bending in the wrong direction, which, apparently didn't deter it, as it came for Brian with the other hand, its empty-pit eyes boring into his face. Brian stumbled backwards up the stairs, horrified at the zombie's reversed wrist.

The zombie was moving slower, as if savoring the hunt. Brian's leg was beginning to throb, only noticeable by pulse he felt at his hip. Looking down, Brian saw that blood had broken the green saliva barrier and was beginning to seep into his pants. The grunny barked loudly, alerting Brian a second too late as the zombie, (labtech 6 according to his coat) reached out with both his hands and grasped Brian's ankle, dragging him down on his butt. Brian yelled, the bat fumbling in his hand as his foot neared the labtech's mouth, which was designed with the same eating arsenal as the grunny's: sharp teeth arranged every which way and wicked sharp. Brian yelled, furiously strugging to free his legs from the grasp of the two pale and dead hands. He succeeded in landing a blow to the labtech's elbow, the backwards one, which released Brian's foot enough to swing out of the other hand. The labtech's broken arm wrist now dangled, sickening Brian, bile rising to his throat. He forced it down, crawling his way backwards and up the stairs, the labtech's periodic steps echoeing in the chamber. Thuckthuckthuck

Brian labored up the stairs, breathing hard. He wasn't sure how much longer he'd last. He didn't have to look up to know that he was slowly losing retreating ground. He hurried backwards, earning him enough room to stand on his feet, his bitten leg failing him in spasms and causing him to rely on the railing. Brian stumbled many times, landing on his butt and banging his elbow against the edge of the stairs, sending course after course of pain through his arm holding the bat. But his grip on the bat handle was of sound friction. The bat may as well have been glued to his hand for the bat was never at an opprotunity to fall down and be lost forever.

Brian was making his way up one more step when it happened. And his instinct kicked in again. The moon had gone out once more, the light in the clocktower dimming fast. The grunny didn't have time to bark out at the labtech as Brian's bat came flying down on his head. The sickening impact sent both Brian and the labtech to their knees: the labtech keeled over backwards and tumbled down the stairs as Brian retched on the wall, the bat welded to his hand. Through the bat he had felt the impact, the caving of the labtech's skull. The grunny lost no time retreating to its host, jumping down the stairs in retreat. After wiping his mouth for the ump-teenth time that night, Brian realized he could move down again. He focused his eyes on the rail as he stepped down, slipping and sliding a little over the next 4 steps. Something white loomed out at him and he raised the bat as the moon shone once more, the labtech's coat gleamed up at him. The smell of decay and toxins covered the coat and Brian kicked it to the wall, clearing the steps of any blockade in case of retreat.

The labtech had rolled down a very long way, and for good reason it seemed. When the labtech loomed up at Brian once more, its arm had been bent backwards. Not only was it going the wrong way due to Brian's initial hit, it was now bent back at the shoulder, and hanging limply, expaining the loss of its jacket. The labtech had on a myriad of cloths, none of them keeping the stink of its flesh quite as well as the jacket did. The grunny was perched on the labtech's shoulder, growling at Brian. The bottomless eyes of the labtech were framed by particles of gore that were a result of Brian's last hit. Brian gagged, and the labtech moved forward, displaying its still functioning brain usage. Brian didn't need to think to find an easy place to swing though. With its arm near behind it, he connected soundly with its unprotected hip, causing it to fold at its center as it sprawled into the wall. Brian began to move up and backwards again, repulsed by the smell of the labtech. He couldn't think, couldn't see for pictures of his damage were superimposed on his eyes, showing up clearly in the dimness of the clock tower.
