Dimitri made his way across town, a large bundle clasped in his small arms. He adjusted it, blew a strand of snow covered hair out of his face, and hurried on. He hadn't expected it to snow so soon; he'd wanted to do this BEFORE it did snow, but since that hadn't happened, now would have to do.
In his hands, he clutched many things. A tarp, for one, along with two large blankets he'd nicked out of a yard sale earlier that week. Some old clothes of his that Viktor had been planning to get rid of, to line Balto's dryer, and some food for him. But best of all, he had a stuffed animal. Now, Dimitri didn't actually OWN any stuffed animals; they were far too GIRLY for him. So, this one belonged to Katia; one of her unicorns, blue and pink and frilly as hell. Girly as it was, he hoped it would work for what he wanted. Balto surely got lonely out there; and he couldn't go see him as often as he'd like. He wanted him to have something, anything, other than that old cash register.
Ducking through the small door he made, he looked around, setting the bundle on one of the unused dryers.
"Balto? Hey, Balto, I'm back? Are you here, boy?" He asked, looking around.

Balto hadn't been outside for a few days. This fact could be blamed on the white stuff that was still currently covering the ground outside. The dog-like shadow had decided that the substance was evil - pure, undeniable evil. It had tricked him! Made him smack into that pile! He was never going near that stuff again!
The pup's ears perked up as he heard Dimitri come in, however - almost immediately, the little shadow had jumped out of his dryer and was scampering over to the boy. Had he come all this way through the white stuff? And it hadn't eaten him? "Rrrrrrr!" Sure enough, there stood Dimitri, unharmed and well. How had he gotten past all the white stuff without getting hurt?! Dimitri was amazing! "Rrrrrrr!" The small shadow hurried over and nuzzled at the boy's leg, happy to see him. He'd been so lonely for the past while...

"Hey, boy." Dimitri grinned and knelt down to give the Shadow a hug, ruffling the 'hair' atop his head and reaching for the bundle.
"Look what I brought you. A tarp. It'll keep the snow out." He said, pulling out the plastic sheet, and grabbing a hammer and some nails from inside his bag. Putting up the tarp took only a few seconds, and he lifted it so Balto could see that he could go outside through it. "See? Now it won't all blow inside as much. And I got you some stuff for your dryer." He smiled, grabbing the rest of the bundle. "It's winter, so it's going to start to get cold. I brought you some food, too! Did you miss me? I missed you." He grinned, hefting the bundle onto his shoulder and heading for Balto's dryer.

Balto let out a happy sounding 'growl' as Dimitri patted his head before peeking over to see what it was that the boy had brought with him. What was inside it? Treasures from the boy's home? The dog-like shadow was quite curious, needless to say.
Snow? What was snow? And why did he need a tarp to keep it out? Was that what the white stuff was? Balto would most certainly love the tarp if it kept this 'snow' out of his laundromat - especially if Dimitri had been the one to bring it for him! "Rrrrr!" The dog-like shadow let his appreciation be known by rubbing up against the boy's leg. His ears perked up again as Dimitri mentioned bringing things for his dryer - stuff to keep warm? Oh, the shadow liked that idea! The nights had been so chilly as of late!
"Rrrrrr!" Of course he'd missed Dimitri! The He let the boy know this quite clearly as he bounded after Dimitri towards his dryer. He'd been so lonely over these past few days; it was nice to finally have some company again!

Dimitri scratched behind Balto's ear and grinned as he pulled the clothing from the bag, bending in to line the dryer with it. He made sure most, if not all of the bottom was covered in clothes, along with as far up the sides as he could get it. Then, he covered it all with the blankets.
"There. That should be warm enough..." He patted it, and turned around to crouch down at Balto's height.
"I also brought you something else." He said, holding the unicorn behind his back. "It's a bit girly, but it should keep you company when I can't be here...So, here." He produced the unicorn from behind his back, and held it out to Balto. "I hope you like it."

Balto nuzzled against Dimitri's hand as he scratched his ear, then watched as the boy began lining his dryer with the clothes and blankets. "Rrrrrr!" This day was a vast improvement compared to the last couple, needless to say - not only was he getting to see Dimitri, but the boy had also brought him supplies that would help him to keep warm during this strange, cold time that was apparently called 'winter'.
"Rrrrr?" Balto tilted his head as Dimitri mentioned having brought him something. What could it be? The pup's eyes lit up as they fell upon the unicorn that the boy produced for him. A toy for him? A new friend? Dimitri had really brought that for him? The pup-shadow let out a happy growl and leaped at him, licking Dimitri's face. The unicorn was, by far, the best present that he'd received thus far! the concept of it being 'girlie' didn't matter to him - just that it was a present from Dimitri. That was all that truly mattered to him.

Dimitri laughed and fell back as Balto leapt on him, trying and failing to shield his face from the Shadow's tongue. "Alright, okay, you like it, I get it!" He laughed. "Now get off, you slobber monster." He shoved his friend gently and playfully off of him, giggling as he wiped his cheek.
"So, what do you want to do? We could go outside and build a snow man, or a fort, or something." He smiled, blissfully unaware of Balto's fear of the dreadful 'snow' stuff.

It took a good few moments for Balto to finally stop licking Dimitri's cheek, what with how happy he was. The shadow wasn't entirely sure of what a 'slobber monster' was, but he didn't think that it could be anything too bad if that's what he was. "Rrrrr!" The little shadow spun in a circle in front of the boy, thrilled by the visit.
He immediately quieted as Dimitri asked if he wanted to go outside, however. The canine-like shadow cast a fearful look towards the door and whined, immediately ducking behind his friend. Why would Dimitri want to go out in that stuff? Didn't he know what the white stuff did to you? It was terrifying! "Rrrrr..."

What was Balto's problem? Dimitri frowned as Balto began to growl at the door, raising an eyebrow and looking over at it. What was wrong? Was he whining?
"What's wrong, buddy?" He asked, crouching down, worried about his friend. Had something happened? He seemed afraid... Was...was someone coming? He reached over and pulled Balto over, scratching behind his ears. "Did something happen? Why don't you want to go outside?" Sometimes he wished shadows could talk. Luka would be annoying as hell, he thought, but it would make finding out what was wrong with Balto WAY easier...

No, no someone wasn't coming - unless the white stuff counted as being 'someone'. Despite his fears, the little shadow relaxed as Dimitri gave him a scratch behind the ears and nuzzled up to the young man's hand. How could his friend not realize how EVIL that snow stuff was? "Rrrrrr..." The dog-like creature cast another fearful glance at the door. Dimitri didn't seem to understand, and Balto wasn't sure of how to make the boy understand.
Well, aside from anything short of going out into the white stuff itself - and he sure as heck wasn't going to do that!

"Are you okay...?" He asked, reaching out to take Balto and pull him into his lap. "Why are you growling so much...?" Balto had never acted like this before. He was concerned, and worried, about his shadow-pup. Process of elimination, then, was the way to go.
"Would...you feel better if we didn't go outside?" He suggested, looking down and giving the shadow a reassuring pat on the side.

"Rrrr..." Balto curled up into Dimitri's lap and nuzzled at the boy - he would be happy to stay just right there. That would be fine! Then he wouldn't have to go out in the scary white stuff!
"Rrrrr..." The dog-like shadow seemed to nod and curled up tighter in Dimitri's lap. He would feel much better if they stayed inside! He didn't want to go outside until all the white stuff was gone! He didn't know how long that would take, but he could wait! Really, he could!

Outside seemed to be his problem, Dimitri realized as Balto agreed that staying inside would be a good idea. So...what was wrong with outside? As he scratched behind Balto's ears, he began to scroll down a mental list of things that were outside. Nothing new, he had noticed...just a bit of snow. Unless there was a crazy hobo living around here? He hoped not; he didn't want Balto getting hurt!
"Is there something outside you don't like?" He asked, looking down at him, worried. "Can you show me what it is? Maybe I can fix it, or make it go away...?"

Show Dimitri what it was? He supposed that he could do that, yes. Reluctantly, the shadow climbed out of his friend's lap and inched toward the flap that the boy had set up in front of his hole. "Rrrrrr..." He nosed at it lightly, trying to move the flap out of the way; after he managed to do so, he began growling at the snow outside of it, though the sound was mixed with a whimper. He really did NOT like that white stuff - not in the least! The dog-like shadow shied back after a moment and looked back at Dimitri, hoping that the boy would understand.

As Dimitri began to realize what, exactly, was wrong, he found it hard to keep from laughing. But, he managed to keep his face straight as he reached out and poked at the snow.
"This? It's just snow, Balto." He smiled over at his friend, lifting a handful of it to show him that it was harmless. "Snow. See?" He let it sprinkle down through his fingers and dusted his hand off before turning around to face the shadow.
