User ImageKailani couldn't say why, precisely, it had surprised him that Monaeka had followed him here -- and had stayed. It shouldn't have, really. She'd been with him all this time, after all, and they'd grown to be rather good friends he thought. Naturally she'd want to stay with him now that he was here.

So why did it surprise him so much?

He couldn't quite place it. Perhaps it was a fear that she wouldn't fit in, that her serious nature would be at odds with the carefree pack. Or maybe he just wasn't sure where they stood.

Yes...that was it. He didn't know what they were. He considered her a dear friend, but sometimes he caught the way she looked at him and swore that there was something else in her eyes, and that 'something else' made him nervous. What was she expecting of him? Did he want the same thing? Could he deliver? In truth, Kai hadn't put much thought into any of this, and now, with the realization that Monaeka would likely not be disappearing anytime soon...well, now was a good time to start thinking.

The blue wolf rose from his contemplative seat in the shade and made his way toward his companion, with perhaps more swagger in his step than was warranted -- but old habits die hard, and Kailani still carried himself like a prince. "So, ah," he started, delicately. "...you're staying, then?"

User ImageShe had been thinking about that herself. About the fact she didn't think she could go back to being alone. Not after meeting Kailani. Something about the blue male just... made her completely irrational and emotion. That's not how Monaeka would describe herself at all. She would describe herself as very level headed, almost emotionless at times. A quick thinker, fast on her feet.

But none of that was accurate anymore. She was getting emotional at the thought of leaving Kai's side. It was like she discovered another half of herself with him. In a way she had. This side of her; the female side, she'd lost contact with a long time ago. She didn't fancy herself a girly female. Yes, she was a girl, but that didn't mean she had to act like one, did it? So, she pushed all the dumb emotions to the side and not let herself be distracted by a pretty male face, or a promise of a warm body next to hers.

But here she was. Thinking all the things she suppressed for so long. And all because of him. Oh, she would never hate him for it, no. Instead, she wandered if he saw the changes in her that she saw. Her ears turned when she heard footsteps behind her and she turned to look at a familiar blue face. Of course she noticed the swagger in his steps, but she wouldn't comment on it. She never did before.

A nod to his words before she took a deep breath and started talking, "Why change a good thing?" She believed she was a good thing for him, and him for her.

His ears swept forward, then back, a little demurely, and he smiled his signature sheepish smile. "Indeed," he said, tail giving a slow wave. "Don't misunderstand me...I'm happy you're here...I was just..." surprised? Could he even say that now, honestly? He saw the way she looked at him now, saw the changes that were sweeping over her, the way she had softened and grown gentler in his company.

No, the only thing that surprised him about the situation was that he was involved in it.

He came up alongside her, and -- because he found the topic difficult to broach, he skirted around it. "This will be a good pack for you, I think. We're not the type to judge, and I can imagine the trouble we'll all get ourselves into so you'll never get bored." He laughed, then, and his laughter was equal parts amusement and nerves.

Gods, this unspoken tension, this elephant in the room. Kailani was unequipped to deal with his own emotions, much less those of a female. Naiad had made that much painfully clear last they'd spoke.

She watched him as he tried to explain himself, eyes calculating and distance. If she was going to stay here for him, she hoped he'd understand why. "You don't have to be so surprised, Kai." She let the silence go for a bit, and was about to talk when he moved up beside her. He was nervous about something. But the skirting threw her off and made her pause and tilt her head. OK, what was he trying to say?

She started walking again, just walking aimlessly as she looked at him. Then, she decided she really didn't know what he was talking about. Skirting around things wasn't how she did them. ...Usually. Not now, anyway. So she stopped again, in front of him and looked him dead in the eye. "Just say what you mean."

Well, now that was difficult, because Kai wasn't entirely sure -what- he meant. That was the whole problem, really. He wasn't even sure what he wanted. He tried to evade her eyes, as the look she was giving him felt like it was piercing right through him. "I'm..." what? lonely? confused? He started over. He was so bad at this emotions business. "I haven't made a lot of friends. Truth be told, I think most of the wolves I've met think I'm a bit of a joke. So I'm....grateful to have you here, with me," he said then, a bit lamely.

He was waffling a bit. Debating on what he wanted to say, and how he wanted to say it.That's all there was to it. And her moving around was making him even more uneasy.

She stopped completely for him, sat down and watched him as he struggled with what to say. The small lines between his brows, the way his ears flicked, it was obvious what he was going to say was going to mean something big.

But it wasn't too big. He was just thanking her, or so she told herself. They were both skirting around the emotional part of the.... relationship? She didn't know what to classify it as. "You don't have to thank me for being your friend." She stated that more like a question than a statement.

"Well, no, I don't suppose I do," he said. He became hyper-aware of her proximity to him, the stillness of her, her now-familiar scent. He smiled a little. "Funny, how things work out, though, isn't it?" He asked.

He'd been mulling this over for awhile. He had suspected, for some time now, that she might have feelings for him, and he didn't know what to do with that knowledge. He had feelings for her, too, certainly, but wasn't sure exactly what those feelings were. Or what to do about them.

So when he closed the distance between them, nuzzling against her shoulder and tentatively licking her cheek, it caught him rather by surprise.

The action caught her by surprise as well. His tongue, warm and moist against her cheek, felt out of place, but right at the same time. It was almost like the action told the story better than the wolf did. Her eyes looked away as she leaned into the touches. Who could blame someone for enjoying what was offered before them? Flicking her ears this way and that, Mon didn't know what to do now. Did she respond? Did she thank him? So, she stayed still again and then looked to anywhere but him.

Suddenly, Mon didn't want to think anymore. Thinking was wearing her out and she didn't have the energy. So, she shut down the thinking portion of her brain and let feelings take over. What happened was she licked his cheek and nuzzled back against him, but not stepping towards him. If she moved that much, she'd have to think.

Kai, what are you doing?

He didn't know, and didn't fully care. He hadn't realized, until precisely this moment, how truly alone he had felt. Back home, there had never been a lack of female attention, even if he hadn't wanted most of it. Now that he was living the hardened life of a renegade, he had forgotten some things. Like the touch of fur and warm bodies and familiar scent. Like how it felt to be close to someone, physically, mentally, emotionally...any way. Was there a difference? did it matter?

Also thoroughly resigned to not think, he leaned against her and allowed the softly humming blankness of his mind to drown out any naysayers or doubts.

Her eyes had closed, a step was taken as she leaned into him further. This was all quite ... quite different. It was like she wasn't in her own body. She was watching herself lean into the blue male who had been so oblivious to her stares and comments. This was the male she'd patched up, talked to into the night and spent so much time with in the past few months. She'd grown to accept every curveball he threw at her. Something about him drew her like a moth to th flame.

But, she wasn't thinking about this. No, Mon was just leaning against him, basking in the warmth and the feel of him against her. It was making her dizzy.

Some time later, Kai would awaken as though from a dream. Except it wasn't a dream, because if it was, he was still in it. There was Mon beside him, cream-and-gold and beautiful and soft and warm. And here he was, beside her, so deeply content and yet, now that the fog was lifting from his sleepy thoughts....terrified.

He jerked to his belly, staring around. Had they really just...and in the open, no less. What if someone had seen? Oh dear gods, knowing the pack he was in, half of them had probably watched from the bushes.

What was he thinking?

Well, at least Mon was still asleep, he thought. That would give him some time to sort out his thoughts...

Mon was asleep. She was asleep, warm, content and quite happy to stay that way. What she shared with Kai was something sepecial to her. In her opinion, this meant that Kai was now her mate and he'd stay close by incase they had pups together. This was his way of accepting her feelings and telling her how he felt. It meant somuch to her.

She shifted as she realized her warmth was gone. Thats when her eyes started to open and she stretched out before looking around for Kai. "Mm..."

"Oh. Hey." He gave her a signature charming, sheepish smile. So much for having time to collect his thoughts.

He rose fully to his paws, stretching, biding his tie for a moment. His thoughts, so sluggish a moment ago, were racing now. Above, the sun was just starting to rise, early dawn hours slowly overtaking the darkness with tendrils of pink and gold light. Had they really spent the whole night together out here under the trees? "...You hungry?" He asked, then, because it seemed as good a thing to say as any.

She watched him get up and saw how nervous he looked. Shifting to her own paws, she stretched out as well. Clearly something had happened during her sleep to make him nervous, and what it was was completely lost on the female. But she nodded a little, ears twitching this way and that as she listened to him. She supposed she was hungry. Mon never ate right when she woke up, but he clearly needed something to do. ".....Yeah.."

"Okay," he said, and shifted a little from paw to paw. Well that was smart, he thought. Offer breakfast without any plan of what he was supposed to get, or from where. Genius. "Well. Good. You stay here, and relax, and I'll go grab us some breakfast." Yes. Great idea.

He flashed another smile (she looks so beautiful when she first wakes up...dammit, no, stop thinking that way, you've done enough damage, you have to put an end to this immediately before you break her heart, just go catch some damn fish) and withdrew without further word. Why was he such an idiot? Why was he always such a damn fool?

When he approached the stream that the pack had settled alongside, he resisted the urge to dunk his head in it entirely and never resurface, and instead nabbed a few fish. Smaller than he would've liked, but it would do. Kept him busy. And they'd taste good enough.

Thus loaded up with a handful of fish awkwardly flopping and gasping and wriggling in his jaws, the blue wolf returned several minutes later. The sun was visible now on the horizon, but the air was still cold, chilly with the onset of winter. He dropped the fish at her paws and settled to his haunches and wished a little for a distraction.
