*Edit* - Because I'm still in the middle of developing this character.. she will more then likely change drastically a few times over the period of this WIP. At the moment I'm more focused on the background and the setting that I imagine her orchard looking like. 3nodding

We're doing the Metamorphoses as the 2nd year production at my college. Among the parts that I play, I'm Pomona the dryad. *dances*
Ever since I started acting.. I've been doing sketches of what I think the character looks like. This time.. I've gotten carried away and my sketch has turned into a full-fledge piece. -__-
Anyway...
I'm a bit stuck on the background.. you can tell that I'm still experimenting with techniques to make backgrounds look real. (I find that there's a big difference from my last attempt at scenery) Do you have any ideas? The shrubbery in the background isn't complete yet. Nothing about the background is really definite yet.. so go ahead and pick it apart.
I'd really appreciate it. ^^

I've spent close to 15 hours on the background so far.. most of that time going into the moss and rocks.
Reference was used for the pose and the rocks.

I know that most of hate doing links.. >.> So I've posted a smaller version and then a link to a larger one incase you want a closer look at the moss. *is proud of the moss*

The rock (the light one) on the right catches my attention first, because it's unlike anything else in the background. So maybe add a few more of those rocks to distribute the colour a bit more? Maybe one in the left lower corner?

I can't think of any more suggestions, it's looking great so far.

On a completely different note, I think her neck is a slight bit too thick (on the right side).

i'm reading that in french literature and they are TOTALLY sucking the fun out of it ; ;

The costume choice seems a bit boring...since nymphs are supposed to be a part of the forest, i always sort of picture them looking more natural.

But even if that's not your appraoch, the dress looks a bit too tailored anyway to be greek.

This is so pretty... I can't wait to see it finished. 4laugh

The background looks fabulous. I agree with Tawney though, that light rock caught my eye before anything else. Maybe through some more of those in there to make the eye move around the image...

I do have to say though, those are some damn fine rock illustrations. whee

But the costume isn't Greek my dear. ^^
Dylan decided to scrap the sleeves last night because they've finally decided on a basic design for the entire show. Nothing is modern.. and nothing is Greek. *shrugs* It's like a world of it's own.

Plus Nymphs are normally naked to tell you the truth.. They weren't about to have me frolocking in the nude of stage. O_o

I can see where they could suck the fun out of that story.. but I love playing Pomona. It's very upbeat, lighthearted and just.. fun. XD

Everyone else about the rocks@
There will be more rocks. I should have mentioned that. >_< *hits her head* I just haven't started blotting them in yet.

*makes another note*
I think they're going for minimalist when it comes to Pomona.. because she's more thrilled with gardening and the like. She wouldn't really bother making herself look 'pretty' but at the same time isn't going to go around in rags. So.. I have a feeling that by the end of the week I'm gonna end up with some form of linked flowers/vines thingy... O_o

I was thinking about making the tree on her far left the tree with the grape vine. Any thoughts?

jesus. I must say that I could never do something like this. Mad skills on the background heart

The only thing I see is the neck, and the foot that the weight is resting on is a little odd shaped, like it needs to be a little fatter/larger
PostPosted: Wed Jan 25, 2006 8:28 pm

I love her face and the pose, but her left foot is at a strange angle. It makes her looks like a drawing and not a real, moving woman. The foot is in the "high heel" position, but I know that she is on the balls of her feet...so damn this criticism is going no where xD I think you could screw around with that foot, but over all I like where this is going! biggrin

looking at it after you said that I thought I would try the pose myself (as I am wont to do when drawing) and I think the pose would look a little more natural if her back toes went bent forward just a tad. However, at the moment she has the floating on air quality of a ballet dancer on pointe which isn't a bad thing for the character you are portraying.

I'll try adjusting her back leg a bit. Thank guys.. :p
And yes, I actually was trying to portray her as very light/airy/ballerina. ^^

Umm.. the neck does look slightly to think so that will get thinned out a little bit when I actually do start focusing more on the figure. I was sort of hoping for more feed back on the background. ... It's the thing that really gives me the problems. sweatdrop

I love how this is coming along. It looks great with the rock added on the left.

ahhh...that explains why i went a greeky freaky with my commentary. We're reading Les Metamorphoses by L'Ovide. A lot more classical XD.

hehe.. That could explain it. *grins*

Hmm.. I have a copy of a 17th century translation of the metamorphoses as reference. Some of the stories are changed and stuff.. so I wanted to know the originals. ^^
