The forest could be a confusing place, so many trees all around that all looked the same. So many clearings that looked almost identical, that it was a wonder to Brackenhide that more wanderers didn't get lost within it. He had experienced times where he could not quite place himself, but it wouldn't take him more than a few minutes to find a familiar landmark here or there. But then again, he could remember details quite well, and he had a head for directions. Why? He wasn't sure, but he figured it must have been something he got from his father. Not that he would ever know for sure, as he had never known his father, but what he could remember of his mother told him that she really wasn't all there.

Today the wind was calm and the trees were barren, the only real color in the forest were the evergreens, present all year long in their never-changing stature. It was one of those very trees that he was inspecting just then. Front hooves propped up against the trunk, he stood almost upright, neck stretching upward so that his nose could just reach the lowest branches. They smelled sticky, and yet always fresh in a strange sort of way, and they were something that he was always curious about. Why did they stay green all year round while the rest of the trees changed color and then shed?

Well, he looked at them as a symbol from Nature to anyone who was willing to listen. A symbol of determination, and that was definitely something that Brackenhide had in abundance.

Thesh-ah clopped along at a steady pace, her glowing emerald eyes looking this way and that. She seemed a tad frazzled and a little more than a lot lost.
"Maybe this way? . . .no maybe . .. no-no it was definitely that way." she said quietly to herself as she began to turn about in a tight figure eight in the middle of the small path she had been following for what seemed like hours.
"i should have come back to the teepee by now . . .I think- or maybe i shouldn't of?" she said rather frustrated with that she gave her cloven hoof a stamp. " Oh crab apples." she cursed. 'wares Blake when i need her this is about the only thing shes good for.'

Just as he poked his tongue out to lick at a particularly plump drop of sap there was a noise behind him. No, not noise... talking. Ears flicking over as he continued to stretch out his tongue, he half-listened to the talking, trying to identify it, or at least pick out if it was a threat or not. But his tongue never made it all the way to the sap. The voice... was a female's.

Quickly closing his mouth and silently dropping back down onto all fours, Brackenhide committed all of his attention to trying to pin point where the voice was coming from. Eyes bright, ears perked up and swivelling about, he began walking, slowly, but determined to find the source. To find the beauty that must hold that soft, frustrated voice.

Well if I just keep going in one direction. I should find something familiar eventually I suppose. She mused picking a direction.
After some moments she heard Hoof beats coming in her general direction.
"hello?" she called out turning in the direction of the approaching one.
The steps sounded light but not intentionally stealthy so she figured them to be that of a cloven hoofed variety. She smelled the wind but got nothing other than the refreshing scent of pine and wild flowers.
Well it's not a skin walker she thought as she could smell them a mile off.

He did indeed have a rather quiet step, but he had had no intention of sneaking up on the mare, or on anyone really. He didn't like to startle others, it usually didn't set him off on the right hoof.

But when she called out, he quickly responded so as to assert that he wasn't a threat. "Hello!" Finally having caught a glimpse of the mare he weaved around the last few pines to make it to a comfortable distance from her. "I didn't mean to startle you!" He tilted his head to one side, bangs following easily, bright eyes looking her over softly as if trying to make sure that she was alright.

"My name is Brackenhide." He bent a knee and bowed his head, "At your service, milady."

sounds polite she noted to herself as the voice got closer.
As he stepped into her line of sight through the maze of pine trees and under brush the first thing she noted was that he gorgeous. What was even better is once he could see her clearly his manners were no different despite her appearance. This was a refreshing change of pace from the usual, very refreshing indeed. Most soquili would take a step back or become visibly defensive. He however seemed completely at ease not even so much as a blink.
Though to be entirely truthful she didn't quite know how to handle this. Thank goodness her mask covered her unsure expression and what more she felt a tad like pauper in the presence of royalty.
"a-ah-ah pleasure Brackenhide. I'm Thesh-ah." she replied quietly. bowing her head politely in turn.
"I appear to be a tad lost." she added looking about her surroundings again, anything to keep her eyes off of him.

He had found another shy one, it seemed, at first glance anyway. She nodded, and he smiled in return, taking the opportunity to make a more thorough scan over the female. She wore a mask, terrifying to some he was sure, but it didn't bother him. Though he did have to wonder why she wore it. Not that it was really any of his business in any way, shape, or form. Perhaps he could ask her later, but it was definitely not appropriate now.

He took a few more steps towards her, but without crowding her, and stopped close-by. He glanced around the area trying to gather his bearings and pinpoint exactly where they were. He couldn't place an exact location, but he knew more or less where they were, and in which direction to head, if she knew where she wanted to go.

"Nothing a lady need worry about, with a humble servant at your side." He glanced left, then right, and then looked back at the mare, "Where is it that milady was headed?"

She felt his gaze upon her now more clearly. His manner was gracious as he looked and what was more . . .he still didn't appear . . .repulsed by her appearance or even put off in the least. It relaxed her a little to be treated like any other mare rather than something of a monstrosity. Despite the honesty in his manner however she kept her guard up in case this was some sort of trick . . .it wouldn't the first time that kind of thing had happened to her if it was. She was once a beautiful mare and knew better than most that the beautiful sometimes reveled in the suffering of the less blessed.
humble servant she thought and if she would have been more comfortable she would have laughed at the thought. However as it was she was far to nervous and embarrassed to exercise her sense of humor. so it was best to stick to the facts.
"i-i was headed toward Razor tail ridge there are some herbs growing on a slope near the back side of it that m-my human needs to stock up on before the snow flies for healing purposes. . .unfortunately-" she looked about with an embarrassed kind of shrug "i seem to have gotten quite turned around seeing as how i should have reached it little over an hour ago according to what i was told. . .direction was never my strong suit i probably should have known better." she sighed giving her head a shake.
"N-now i think i had best settle for finding the camp site again. We set up under a large oak with swirling patterns in the bark, in a small clearing, with lots of milk thistle growing in it. You wouldn't happen to know where I'm talking about would you?" she asked hopefully.

He tilted his head a little as he listened to the mare. She spoke as if she were hesitating even to keep his company. Brackenhide wondered why so many mares were uncomfortable around a stallion, and in general, why so many mares weren't confident in themselves. He shrugged the thought away -if only mentally- and figured it was something he would probably never understand. No matter, he had a different matter at hoof this night.

Softly he mumbled, repeating her words, "Large oak... clearing... milk thistle..." His eyes squinted a bit and his head tilted the other way as he tried to locate this place in his mind and connect it to where he was pretty sure they were.

A few more moments passed before his head jerked up with a massive smile across his features. Brackenhide jovially replied at last, "I'm sure we can find it without too much trouble." A slight glance left, and he turned right, taking a few small steps so that she would begin to follow.

She watched him think for some moments hopefully. When he concluded his wide optimistic grin was enough to calm her frazzled nerves and she was able to crack a small smile herself.
Good company did wonders and it had been a long time since she had encountered any of that. Keeping instep beside him. She tried her hoof all be it a rusty hoof at striking up a conversation.
"thank you for the help. Do you perhaps live in this area? It's-ah quite nice." she ventured. looking down to look at his hoof prints . . .or at least where his hoof prints would have been. He didn't even bend blades of grass with his step. She knew now his breed for certain.
Ah a pure Kirin I haven't seen one of his kind in years. This also explains why i havent encountered any of his prints. . . Wait Aren't they normally more a social grouping breed. I've never encountered one without another at least near by.  She wondered. Well I'd better ask I don't want anyone to get worried.
"Your herd won't mind if your gone long will they? We could check in with them if you would like." she offered.
well that sounded weird. she thought mentally face palming herself.

A cheerful nod is how he replied to her falling into step as well as her thanks. Live here? No, he hadn't found a place to settle down, and he wasn't even sure he ever would. But what will come will come.

"No, no. Though you're quite right, it is nice here." As they continued to walk he took the time to admire their surroundings. The light was soft here, only filtering through the trees instead of glaring down harshly like it did in the desert or even open plains. And though there couldn't be wind here among the trees, a light breeze sometimes found it's way through and tied all the wonderful smells of the forest together into a delicious medley of aromas. Yes, he was quite fond of forests, that much was true. Perhaps his forever-home (if he found one through his life wanders), would be in a forest. Time would tell.

"Herd?", he chuckled, "I have no herd, Thesh-Ah. Commitment is something that my family is not known for." A quick wink, before he was distracted for a moment by a scent that was floating by on the ever-so-slight breeze. He didn't stop walking, but his nose found it's way up into the air and his nostrils flared a few times as he took it in.

At this she She laughed lightly bumping her rump against his. Like the way a human would playfully hit someone in the arm or something of that nature.
"A stallion who shy's from commitment my oh my how original." she commented in a good humored fashion.
what are you doing? she scolded herself mentally You dont know him and its not your place to comment. Then looked this way and that admiring scenery.
Wait no herd alone in the woods perhaps he was a little more though than he looked? from the corner of her eye She looked over his white adornments and scar less hide. it was unlikely. Unless he was really good. but then that was unlikely too
She then noticed him smelling the air taking a deep breath herself.
"what is it?" she asked.

He took the nudge with a sly smile, but otherwise left it at that. He could go into details, but in his experience females didn't want to know the nitty gritty of one's life. No, they were interested in the romantics and exciting battles, and the like. Besides, his family wasn't a topic that he liked to talk about.

His nose tracked the smell for just a moment before he realized that she had spoken to him. He shook his head slightly and looked over at her, blinking. "Oh! Nothing. Nothing to worry about, anyway." Another sly smile crooked his lip, as he proposed a slight challenge. Would she accept?

Bursting into a quick trot, he gradually raised his pace to a canter but left it thereabouts for a minute or two. He was taking them somewhere, should she follow, but where could very well be unknown if the mare was still lost.
The path he took was level enough, but the trees began to thicken and become taller, stronger. The beauty around them became darker, but did not feel oppressive. Before long they came to a small incline, and this was where Brackenhide slowed his pace so that he could easily stop at the top.

This was a place that he had come across once before, and he wondered if the mare was aware of it being so close to where they had pitched their camp. He stood atop the edge of what was now obviously a cliff. More so, this cliff overlooked a chasm that had been taken over by a beautiful new regrowth forest. What had been ugly, dry cracked rock, was now covered in a lovely layer of lush moss, and throughout the area sprigs were becoming saplings and small bushes were beginning to sprout and flower.

Silence was quite often more powerful than words, so he stood there quietly, enjoying the view as well as the soft wind that caressed his muzzle.

Thesh-ah Not wanting to get too close to the edge yet still wanting to see what captured his attention. Looked about for a moment trying to spot maybe a hidden threat or something of that nature. Her all to Focused mind grasping for the logic behind his action, she became quite puzzled for a moment when she saw nothing other than rocks and trees.
Suddenly liken to the sun over a distant moutain top it dawned on her. He wasn't searching for anything this wasn't an action of need it was one of simple enjoyment.
A sigh escaped her gently with a shake of her head. It was true she was constantly aware, always looking, surveying, keeping a wary eye out for anything that might hold threat. In fact Most would say very little escaped her notice but not very often did she just gaze just for the sake of gazing.
Stopping to smell the roses so to speak was not exactly her strong suit.
This chasm was a prime example of exactly that. she had passed by this spot more than once for certain on her patrol route, but not once had she admired the color of the rock against the new green foliage.
Quickly her ears pricked forward
I've been by this we must be getting close! She thought.
"this looks somewhat familiar." she commented still looking out across the chasm.
