Name: Devi Age: 17 Gender: Female Zoid: Shield Liger Personality: Straightforward and a little sarcastic. She sometimes likes to bug people, but not usually. When she does mess with someone she won't stop until she's satisfied. She doesn't care whether she's with other people or alone -she'll keep herself occupied either way. Like most other pilots, her Zoid is her life. When she first got the Shield Liger, she couldn't decide whether it had a will of its own or not.
Number of Years as a Pilot: 2 Piloting Skills: Above average Side: Republic Occupation: Zoid Fighter (Close combat) Style: "Just keep beating on them 'til someone goes loses. And try not to get hit." Shield Liger Pixel (c) Duowolf of Zoids Evolution
Name: Dragon Info: Dragon is Devi's Mini-Zoid. It was a gift, and with a few modifications, it worked once more. It can help fix the Shield Liger, as long as the damage isn't too extensive. That's what mechanics are for, though.

~Two Years Before the Forming of Team Chronos~
It was a boiling hot day. At the exact time when the sun was overhead, heating the entire city. The rays seemed to melt everyone who was outside in the blistering heat. The people should have been used to hot weather. They lived right outside the desert after all. But none of them were prepared for this. It was the hottest recorded temperature ever in the city. People were overheating and heading for any shelter that they could find, just to get away from the sun that was destroying them. Mothers were taking their children anywhere that was safe, anywhere that had even the smallest of shadows. People were panicking. The heat was unbearable. Many would die that day, most of them around this time. The ones that couldn't find shade in the noon sun went fast.
But there was one person who didn't seem to be bothered by it. She had gone through intensive training to survive in harsh conditions. Now, heat seemed like nothing. She hadn't even broken a sweat, even though she was in jeans. Her long hair was tied back, but the front still stayed in her face. Each step she took kicked up sand, as this city had no sidewalks. And if it had any, they had been covered by sand carried by the wind and sandstorms. People were running all around her, as fast as they could, but she acted very relaxed and calm. She had her hands jammed into her pockets, clasping a large wad of money. It was all the money she'd managed to save up.
The door to the large garage opened quickly and suddenly, and slammed against the metal that it was encased in. The girl walked through the entrance, still acting as though nothing had happened. She had wanted to get the owner's attention. And it had worked. A man with a shotgun came out to see if anyone was trying to break into his Zoid garage. He had left the comfort of his office and his large fan for some kid? She probably wasn't worth wasting his shots on.
"Get out now, girly!"
He now had the shotgun pointed straight at her head, just in case she had a concealed weapon of her own. That day, it was pretty much every man for himself. If you didn't protect your property, then no one else would. She kept walking forwards, as if she didn't even notice the shotgun at all. Or as if it didn't matter to her whether he shot or not. She didn't have much to lose. All she really had was the money in her pocket, a rolled up piece of paper, and the clothes on her back. Her parents had abandoned her a few years before anyway.
"I said get the hell out!"
"You put up a poster that said you were selling Zoids."
She pulled out the piece of paper and unrolled it, showing it to him. It was defiantly his poster all right. Had his address, number, and name on it. But he'd just put that up a little while ago? And people were already coming to see what type of Zoids he was selling? So it was very true. Zoids were the most popular thing at the moment. He dropped the shotgun, nearly shooting it in the process. It wouldn't be smart to shoot a potential customer.
"Well, you've come to the right place!"
His entire attitude seemed to have changed, though he really couldn't change the way he looked. He had been sweating like a dog, and was in a white shirt that was defiantly too small for him. He was overweight and hairy, but he really hadn't expected anyone to come so soon. The top of his head was bald, and in an attempt to make himself look better, he had tried to do a comb over. But that had only succeeded in making him look even more ridiculous. Now, he was like a used car salesman.
He led her over to a small line of Zoids, each one different. There were four: A Zabat, a Guysack, a Gator, and a Demantis. He explained each one and what it could do in extensive detail. Of course, all the things he was saying he had simply looked up. He only knew how to fix the things, not what they did. He could care less, as long as he made money. It wasn't like he could pilot them at all. He just needed a couple of suckers to buy them at an extravagant price. After all, it was pretty much impossible to cross the desert without a Zoid. And since he was the only one who sold them? Well, he made a lot.
"..."
"You like?"
"Cut the crap. I don't want a Zoid that can't even fight against an old lady."
The man was startled. No one had ever really spoken to him like that. He was too good a salesman for them to say no. But this girl had seen right through him. These Zoids really weren't strong, compared tot the ones he had hidden away in places only he knew. They were just for transport, not for battling over and over again. And apparently, this girl was serious about what she was planning to do. She was going to become a pilot, not just someone who makes money getting people over the desert. Since he didn't want to show her some higher level Zoids, she looked around the garage. Sitting in the back, in a corner, was a black-and-blue Zoid. It looked pretty unused, but it still seemed as if it was old. Very old. There were cobwebs all around it, as if it hadn't moved in ages, and as if it was waiting to die. The Zoid seemed to have given up.
"What about that one over there?"
"What? The Shield Liger?
...
I found that one in the desert a couple of years ago. It was nearly completely demolished. Must've been in some huge battle or something. There was no pilot, so I moved it here. Damn thing took forever to fix, but when I was done, it didn't even move. Stupid thing won't even activate. I guess its power core must be dead or something."
The girl was there within a heartbeat. She was right next to the Zoid, examining each and every square inch. It looked good enough, but the real question was whether or not the thing would move for her. At the moment, it was her only real choice. And she liked it. She really didn't know why, but the Zoid gave her a good feeling.
"I'll take it."
"You're serious? None of its systems work!"
"And it's STILL better than the crap you showed me earlier."
She took out about a quarter of the money she had in her pocket. The man was now right behind her, so she turned around and showed it to him. She didn't even have to ask if it was enough. It was her choice what the price was after all. The Zoid didn't work, so he really couldn't overcharge her. He would've if he could, but it was out of his control. If he didn't accept, he'd probably never get the piece of junk out of his garage. He went back to his office to get the paperwork stating that it was legally hers. He began mumbling under his breath. She had put her hand on the Zoid, and at that eact moment, she could of sworn that the Zoid had purred softly to her.
"I should be paying her to take it off my hands..."
"What was that?"
"I asked what your name was!"
"...
It's Devi."

~That Night~
The light in the tent was like a candle in the black night. Strange that twelve hours later, the climate seemed to change from a boiling desert of sand to a frozen desert of slush. The lone tent was standing up to the cold, because if it folded, the person inside had only one place to go. And she wouldn't last long in a Zoid that couldn't activate. And she was exhausted. Nearly ten straight hours of working on a Shield Liger that seemed impossible to fix. She did know a little bit about fixing Zoids ?that had been a requirement in order to complete her training- but not enough to fix something like this. Everything seemed to be in proper order, but for some reason, the power core just wouldn't turn on and give life to the Zoid. Maybe it needed something.... A charge, or a reason to activate... Who knew. Anyway, it wasn't alive, so how could the Shield Liger decide whether or not it worked for its pilot?
The Shield Liger was just outside the tent, still waiting. It had been towed there from the garage, since nothing would get it to move. At the moment, the Zoid was about as useful to Devi as a stick would be to a baseball player in the middle of a game. The owner of the "fine establishment" that she'd visited earlier had offered to tow the Liger all the way across the desert ?for an extra charge of course. Devi had blown all her money on the Zoid itself, and didn't have enough to pay for the trip. She'd just stated she didn't want to go. The tent was her sanctuary for the night, the only thing keeping her away from the freezing cold outside. But the sanctuary was about to be breached.
About three figures approached the campsite silently. Two men and a woman. Their minds weren't focused on the small tent just yet. By the size of it, not many people could fit in there. For now, all their attention was on the Zoid. Their prize. Though they didn't know it hadn't worked in years. Not after that final battle, the one that left it demolished in the desert with no pilot or working systems. As they approached the site, they began whispering among themselves.
"This isn't a good idea. The pilot might have a gun or something."
"Stop being such a wimp."
"Like you aren't scared in the least."
"Would you both just shut up!"
The other two were quiet again. Apparently, the other male was their leader. He had the most respect anyway. But how much was the respect of thieves worth? Apparently enough to keep this small band together. Tonight's Zoid theft might actually get them some money. Shield Ligers did get them a nice profit. Provided nothing went wrong, they'd be able to keep their own Zoids working perfectly. When they were within range of the tent, their leader motioned for the woman to go to the left and the other man to go by the right. They'd surround the person inside and make sure the pilot couldn't escape. Or fight back. But while they had been speeding up, they'd lost their stealth. They'd been in such a rush to get to the tent that they'd forgotten about being as quiet as they could. And in the process, Devi had woken up. She'd fallen asleep in her clothes, and she walked out of the tent calmly.
"What are you doing here?"
The girl had surprised them. None of them had expected the owner of the Zoid to wake up that quickly. This definitely wasn't going to go as easy as they hoped. The leader was the first one to snap out of the confusion.
"H-How did you...."
"Let's just say I'm a light sleeper. Now I repeat: What. Are. You. Doing. Here."
"Why should we tell you?"
"Because I just woke up with three people around my tent, and it doesn't seem like they've come to make friends." The sarcasm was obvious in her voice. The man recognized that she wasn't going to give up her Zoid without a fight. This girl was strong enough to protect herself, even without the machine. He backed up a bit, while his accomplice moved forward. He didn't seem afraid. That, or he was just a cocky idiot. He chose B.
"Oh, come on, little girl. We're just here to take your precious Zoid and leave. We don't want any trouble, so why don't you just go back in your tent and pretend you never saw us. Then we can all go back to our lives -of course, you won't have any transportation."
He had a smirk on his face, as though he'd already gotten the Zoid and was headed to the market with his money. Devi silently walked over to him, taking her time. She walked slowly, one foot after another in a perfect rhythm. Her face didn't change. No smile, no emotion. Her head was facing the ground, though her eyes were staring directly at him. The man took it the wrong way.
"Giving up already?"
His smirk hadn't left his face. If anything, it was larger now. But it wouldn't be there for long. The leader just looked at the two people standing in front of him. He wouldn't do anything. His subordinate would have to deal with his own errors. The other woman sighed, amazed by his stupidity. Devi would have sighed as well, but that wasn't the time or place. She stood up straight, and moved her head up so that she was staring right into his eyes. She definitely wasn't as tall as him.
"You wish."
Her fist made contact with his face, before he even knew it had moved. [TBC]
