No one needed to know she was here - she'd picked this time and this place specifically so they wouldn't see her. They couldn't see her, she wouldn't let them, they just weren't allowed. Warily the tiny foal peered above the cover of the bush she had selected as camoflauge, glancing left, then right to ensure that her position was secure. Her ears swivelled, they twitched and now and again she would flick her tongue out to see if a new taste or scent entered the air. As it was, her instincts informed her that she was alone and would not be disturbed.

She could feed safely.

Tentatively the tiny filly took a few steps out, her 'corruption' revealed to the world in these moments. Colourless eyes surveyed her surroundings while vicious teeth lined her jaw. Her tail, spaded as a demonic beast's flicked and swayed from side to side as though it had a life of its own. It should have come at no surprise that this nervous creature kept to the shadows, her ebony coat ensuring that she would be a most difficult creature to spot.

It was dawn and as a consequence she still had the shadows to mask her existence, but just enough light to see where she was going. She always woke up at this time, always hungry for breakfast and curious for food. With the help of her 'father' she had learnt very quickly that this particular time of day was perfect for the 'feeding' that was required of them. The sensible were asleep during these times, curled up in their groves and away from prying eyes. These sensible, slumbering creatures were therefore not around when she needed to feed - it was no secret that dining on meat horrified many.

The river wasn't far from here, she knew its location by heart now and the journey didn't take long at all. There was even a bounce to her step, a confidence that only existed when away from judgemental eyes. Her tummy growled and as she drew nearer the sound of rushing water her nose quivered in anticipation. This was the only form of hunting that she had ever enjoyed, unlike pursuing prey such as a deer, there was a certain finesse to fishing and a true master never missed. The added benefit to this method was that a fish didn't release a blood curdling scream and it's life could be ended immediately rather than taking up to five minutes - she didn't end up with a stiff jaw either.

It was cold though, winter was vast approaching and when she had finally drawn to a halt at the water's edge she regarded it thoughtfully before drawing her tail round to touch the surface. It was with a squeal that she hopped away from it in surprise, unprepared for the chill - last winter, when she had been nothing more than a babe it had been Sylph who had fished. He hadn't explained why but perhaps it had been something to do with this!

She pulled a face, a little unhappy with her lot.

...She didn't want to be cold, she didn't like that feeling!

The young foal was taking time away from his mother, though he knew her presence was never terribly far. Kahiau had decided that he was going to explore his independence, to prove that he was quite capable and that his mother and he could go on vast adventures. Kaiya had told her son many great stories of both her life and the lives of others, full of knights, and princesses, good versus evil, where right would win over wrong and the endings were . . usually happy.

The unhappy endings didn't upset the young, level-minded foal. They always served to give him a lesson, and it made the happy endings that much sweeter. Life, he understood even at this age, wasn't always a good or happy place. The life that his mother walked, while he didn't entirely understand it, was sometimes dangerous. He didn't know exactly what she did, but she had scars to prove its danger, and often spoke of saving those who were unloved and broken.

Kahiau wanted to save those who were unloved and broken too. In fact, it was part of the reason he was out exploring! His mother wasn't going to return to her duties until he was old enough to be up for the journey. And yet, even though the young cream-coated colt believed in his heart of hearts that he was ready . . .well . . . for some reason Kaiya still wouldn't travel.

So today he was going to prove just how far he could walk, that he wasn't afraid. Besides. . . there were flowers to pick. And picking flowers was something the young colt loved to do. Given, it was close to winter, and they were much more difficult to find, but he was bound and determined to make some sort of flowery gift. Already he had donned his tail and mane with some dry thistles, and a few fallen leaves that had retained their bright colors.

Quietly moving through the woods, the day early and most of the world still asleep, Kahiau was enjoying himself. While keeping an eye out for any sort of plant that might make an interesting bracelet, necklace, or present, he was also imagining some great stories when he too might save someone unloved.

"Don't worry - Kahiau's here. All is cool . . . " And being cool, and kind, was really a great thing as far as he was concerned. Of course, his imagination came to a screeching hault the moment he heard the oddest noise. It was . . . it was a screech.

Well, the only reason someone screamed was if they needed help or were surprised! Curious as well as concerned, his games were forgotton as he suddenly veered towards the source. Pushing his way through the foliage, he did catch sight of what looked to be another young soquili not far off. Whoever it was, they had a black coat, and were half-covered by the trees and surroundng brushes. "Hey. . . Are you all right?" His voice was a bit of drawl, though oddly gentle.

He didn't see anyone else near the waters edge, and the squeal had been so close it had to the black one! Picking his way out of the woods, with Suppi's back to him, the only thing he had yet to really notice anything different or strange about her. In fact, he didn't even know if she was a girl or a boy . . .

This was the first soquili he'd met outside of his mother. As far as he knew, this was going to be his new friend!

There was someone here, someone other than her.

She tensed, her milky gaze sliding to the left as she heard him speak. She had smelt him of course, her senses decidedly honed by her blood. She was designed to be a hunter and as a consequence they had already developed. Regardless of her young age, she was already a honed killer, or that's what most would have assumed. Truth be told she didn't like hunting and the mess it entailed - on the contrary she was a great lover of angling because it seemed to require a certain element of artistry.

Nevertheless, the revelation that she wasn't actually alone did cause her too panic and had he possessed telepathic abilities he would have been aware of the constant stream of 'oh nos' echoing in her head. She was panicking, unhappy with the intrusion on her privacy and what she considered personal space. He would look at her, he would see and then he would chase her off - she wouldn't even be able to come back to this river again. Unsurprisingly, the young filly felt the tears well up in her eyes at the possibility, some things just weren't fair, why did she have to move?

...Why couldn't he?

Because he wasn't scary like she was, because he wasn't corrupt. She envied those with a pretty face.

Alas her ears flattened against the back of her head and with an uncertain whimper she dove further into the bushes and firmly out of sight. She didn't given him the response he required, her manners momentarily lost in the painful shyness and uncertainty that often reared its ugly head upon such encounters. Now more than ever she craved the supervision of her surrogate parents, if they were here then things wouldn't be so bad, right?

Ducking her head deep into the bushes, the mare scurried deeper into the undergrowth and shrouded herself completely from view. If he hadn't seen her prior to her vanishing act then no one would have been the wiser to her existence. The only tell tale sign that she remained would be the sound of a shaky breath here and there, and the occasional whimper. A sorry sight indeed, any true kalona would have been appalled by the sight!

Here one moment, the next she was gone! In a flash, the space that had once occupied a dark figure suddenly was empty of any sign of life. This caused the cream coated colt to pause, his ears pricked and eyes wide as plates.

"Woah . . ." He breathed, his movement still as his little brain furiously tried to figure out what happened. For just a moment, he wondered if what he had seen was nothing but a phantom, or a rogue shadow! Maybe, just maybe, his eyes were playing tricks on him.

But that couldn't be. . . could it? He was certain that he had seen something small and petite, someone near the waters edge. Picking his way closer, Kahiau paused to look around. He noticed some cloven hoof prints, freshly made, which meant that he figure had been there. "Awww. . . . where'd you go?" He questioned the emptiness, stepping lightly in a small circle.

Thankfully though, while he might have questioned his gaze, his ears did pick up the breathing an the ever so slightest sound of a whimper now and then. The bushes were quivering just a smidgen, and Kahiau was certain that was where his friend might have gone.

. . . . was she playing a game? Maybe. Or . . .or maybe she was just really shy! That had to be it, hadn't it? His mother had told him that sometimes others didn't like to be seen, or didn't like to be bothered. Maybe she was one of theM? Sometimes they grew hostile, but sometimes they fled. . . . Well, he didn't think the quivering bush would be hostile, but he also didn't want to corner the black figure either.

"Um. . . . whoever is in the bushes, are you okay? I won't give away your hiding spot . . . I'll even pretend to not know you're there. . . but I just want to be sure you're OK. I heard a squeal . . . And I think it might've been you. Unless there's someone else around I don't know about." That was entirely possible. But he hadn't seen anyone but the black figure that had run in to the bush.

His concern was obvious, even as he squinted in to the bushes. He couldn't see anything, but he sure heard them.

Her hiding place wasn't working, he could see her! In response to this revelation the bush gave another rather abrupt shiver and she sucked in a breath. She was certain she'd given herself away, maybe she had been breathing too hard - what if she held her breath, would he go away then? She could be a figment of the imagination and she felt better when she was. Just a passing illusion, a rogue shadow or a trick on the eye - if she wasn't even a memory, then she'd never have to worry about them coming back either.

Unfortunately he didn't seem intent on leaving and she burrowed deeper into the bush, her tail coiling around her flank as she lay as still as possible (which wasn't very). She remained silent of course, refrained from responding to him and instead, she chose to regard him with suspicion as she gazed through the gaps in the leaves. From her vantage point she watched him circle, glance here and there, then speak again. It was only when he turned properly that she realised that he was an Angeni and grew even more concerned.

...Weren't they supposed to hate her sort?

Oh dear.

Still, why had he said that he'd pretend he didn't know where she was? That was a nice thing to do and his gesture to make sure she was okay was a nice thing too. Then again he hadn't seen her yet, what if she poked her head out and he turned hostile? She was a quick little sprinter but he could fly and would catch up before she could reach her mother!

Her lips pursed, her fangs biting into her gums just a touch as she continued to observe him for a little longer. It was only when she saw a facial expression that she recognised from her surrogate parents that she realised that perhaps he was being genuine. In return, she could at least provide him with a response, it was only fair.

"I'm okay," she replied quietly, her voice just about audible as she spoke through the leaves.

Kahiau was worried that the quivering bush wouldn't actually speak. Perhaps he was being too forward? Perhaps he was still scaring her still by hanging around? Maybe . . . Maybe she was just afraid of strangers! It made sense, as the young colt knew that sometimes strangers weren't nice or kind and one always had to be careful around them. But . . . at the same time . . .how could one become a friend if they were strangers first? If they didn't talk to each other, or if he kept scaring her, then there was no way they'd get to know each other.

What an awful predicament.

Thankfully though, the ebony shadow hiding in the bushes finally did speak. She said she was all right . . . which was definitely a a relief! "Oh, oh good . . . I'm glad you're not hurt or nothin', because I know sometimes people screech when they get hurt." He nodded firmly, before smiling at the bush. He still couldn't see what was in there, but now he knew it was a girl and he wasn't just seeing things.

Backing up a few steps, his trotted a wide circle around the plant, contemplating what to do next. "Is it comfy in there? Cause I've never hid in a bush before, I thought I'd get pricked and poked by all the twigs and stuff." Still, his eye was drawn over to a nearby bush. There were a few soft, white flowers amongst the greenery. Most of the flowers were dead, but these late bloomers would be perfect!

Keeping his ears alert behind him, in case the bush was going to move, he plucked a few and retreated back to where he had originally stood. Lowering his head, he dropped them in a small pile, a peace offering for whoever was quivering within. "I'm Kahiau, so now you don't have to think I'm just a stranger . . . And i found these flowers for you. I like flowers. . . and I figure . . .if you're gonna stay in the bush, a bush should have some flowers in it. But if you ever come out, you can have the flowers as a snack or, better yet, can put them in your hair." Well, their introductions were almost complete. . . if he could get her name than she wouldn't be a stranger anymore and they could quickly become friends.

She'd be his first friend, after all, and he was certain his mother would approve of him meeting other foals! A shame she hadn't told him just how hard it might be. . . especially when they pretended to be bushes!

Kahi was definitely being just a touch too forward for this little filly. One could hazard a guess and assume that any other foal would be sufficiently comfortable with the encounter, but Suppi was not a child that happened to fall comfortably into stereotypes. She was, for want of a better word, terrified by the entire state of affairs and knew of no appropriate way to handle herself. Confined to a bush and with no place to run, it was in hindsight that she accepted that she probably should have chosen a hiding place that wasn't easily circled.

Wasn't she supposed to be the hunter?

She felt more like the prey!

She remained quiet, shuffling just a touch here and there to stay comfortable. Eyes fixed on the colt as he puttered about, she continued to regard him with both suspicion and fear. At any moment he could stick his head in the bush and it would be over - he'd see what she was, shriek in horror and promptly chase her off. Worse yet, he could hurt her, chase her off and then claim her territory for his own. Her favourite spot would be gone and she'd have nowhere else to fish until her papa came back to show her a new spot. She curled up a little more at this, her tail caressing her in a tight cuddle.

Nevertheless, it was with interest that she watched him approach another bush and it was with confusion that she watched him present her with a gift. She'd never been given a gift before, it was a puzzling moment and her milky gaze flicked between the flower pile and the angeni colt warily. A quiver of her muzzle and she detected the sweet scent of the flowers, enough for her to lean forward just a touch and then she hesitated. She couldn't show him her face, other creatures didn't like her face.

...They screamed.

She didn't like that sound.

Instead the tiny filly acted in a flash, a 'blink and you would miss it' moment as her tail uncoiled from around her form and swept out of the bush. Visible and clearly spaded at the tip, the limb cupped round the flower pile and abruptly drew it into the bush so that it could be examined more closely. Now that it was within her reach, Suppi couldn't help but give a tiny coo of appreciation at the smell, it would have made a lovely salve. She temporarily ignored Kahi as he continued with his rambling in relation to the flowers - her attention only returning when he mentioned putting them in her hair.

"That won't work. No, it won't work," she shook her head, though the motion wouldn't be visible to him. "Can't put things in hair when you don't have any," she mumbled and recoiled a little more from the bush's edge. Her rambling was nonsense of course, she had hair, it just wasn't very long!

"Can't eat flowers either, they don't like me. Don't like me at all."

What was that about names? Clearly she wasn't ready to provide her's just yet.

Kahiau wasn't dense, not really. He just didn't understand that some people honestly didn't want company, much less his. While he understood shyness, he also understood that sometimes they just needed some gentle encouragement. He was everybody's best friend, or so he believed, and this little filly was absolutely no different!

The pale eyed foal did start a bit as her tail whipped out and cradled the flower, pulling it in to her reach. It was unlike anything he'd ever seen! Still, the cogs were working, and the little foal was beginning to understand the reasonings behind her fear - she was afraid to come out because she had a tail! Now, he knew there were bad sorts of soquili out there, his beloved mother had often warned him to be cautious. There were others that wouldn't hesitate to hurt another, but surely this little filly wouldn't hurt him!

They were friends, after all. And she liked the flower. Bad guys didn't dig flowers, so this meant that she had to be good. Go foal logic.

And then Suppi spoke. She didn't have hair. THAT was why she hid! It had to be. Still, Kahiau wasn't at all perturbed and he wasn't going to give up. This was his friend, even if she did like to hide in the bushes. "Well, you don't have to have hair to wear flowers, ya know. I could tuck it behind your ear, or even make you a crown out of a bunch of them! Then you could wear it around your neck, or on your head!" Yes, that was exactly what he was going to do. It would be perfect, and then she wouldn't have to worry about not having hair.

"You should come out though, and pick out the flowers you like best. There are a bunch of different colors on these few bushes. D'ya have any preference?" He trotted away from the bush Suppi was hiding in, and trotted over to examine another that was filled with late summer flowers. They were all various colors, and he wasn't sure what his nameless friend would like best.

She still hadn't told him her name. Maybe she didn't have one? That was a possibility too. His wings suffled a bit, though he did glance behind him periodically to see if his friend had come out. He really wanted to make her a flower head-dress now, he knew she'd love it! But only if the colors were right.

He was really very determined to stick around, wasn't he? His rambling continued and rather than zone out, this time she listened and absorbed what he had to say. Honestly, flowers had far more artistic uses than she had previously been aware of and her interest was piqued. However, curious or not the filly was still apprehensive about being seen and so, an interal war began between curiosity and shyness. This conflict seemed to continue for a considerable time but in reality it only lasted for a period of about a minute - it was when this minute was up that her curiosity and shyness appeared to reach a compromise.

It was a simple compromise really.

She would come out, but only when he wasn't looking and once she was out, she would do it in a way that he couldn't see her properly. By foal logic this made perfect sense and was arguably very intelligent. At least, all of this would have seemed very intelligent to a child even if it came across as a touch ridiculous to an adult.

This plan now in mind, she waited for a moment when his back was turned and very quickly darted out of her hiding place. Scuttling into the shadows, she made good use of the other bushes in the area to hide herself from view. When slouched, only the very tips of her ears could be seen and in her mind, kept her nice and safe. It wasn't very long at all before the filly had made her way towards the bush he was examining and then, without warning, began to 'straighten' so that she wasn't slouched anymore.

...The overall result, was a touch comical.

Her mouth remained hidden by the bush, shrouding her 'scary' face from view - but a set of pointy ears and milky white eyes peered at Kahi as he examined the flowers. When he made reference to picking out her favourite flowers, she swung her tail round, looped it over her head and pointed it straight down at one of the yellow ones. All of this was done in absolute silence of course, she clearly wasn't the best conversationalist in the world.

"That one," she stated quietly.
PostPosted: Sat Feb 12, 2011 4:02 pm

Thankfully for Suppression, Kahiau was rather busy examining the flower bushes. It wasn't the idea time for flowers, but leave it to the young colt to be able to find some beauty in the nearby flora. He was a pro when it came to hunting down plan life and was even better at making even the ugliest plant in to something beautiful. Or so he liked to believe. So even though his ears did flick a bit at the sound of her shuffling, he was too busy peering at the nearby bushes to watch her comical escape.

It was only when she straightened out so close by that his wings gave a small flare of surprise. Still, he couldn't stop from beaming at her, delighted to finally see her. Sort of. The bush was in the way, but it wouldn't be forever! "Glad you finally came out," he prattled, his pleasure obvious with the way his pale eyes sparkled. "I was hoping you would, I don't have any friends and you'd be one of my first! But having to find you in bushes would be kinda hard, but I'd do it anyway, even if you stayed in it." That was the truth!

Even though Suppi wasn't much of a conversationalist, Kahiau could (apparently) chatter on for both of them. He wasn't upset by silence or quiet times, but sometimes his excitement got the better of him and he found himself chattering madly. Like now, for instance. He was so excited to be able to make flowers for his new friend that he didn't even notice how she kept her face firmly hid in the bush.

And her tail! With the way it pointed, he knew for sure she was something a little unique. He'd never seen a tail that wasn't covered in fur, and he wanted to ask her about it. "Yellow is one of my favorite colors, so that's a good choice! It'll look really nice against your black coat, that's for sure." He chattered happily, leaning down so he could lightly n** the flower from the bush. "If you want any other colors, let me know. But I'll find the prettiest yellow flowers. I like your tail too, by the way. It's a lot cooler than mine." He paused and looked back behind him, watching as the pale white and gold hairs wiggled a bit as he wagged it. Useless. Utterly, completely useless. . . except for tucking in flowers. "You can do neat things with it, I can't do anything with mine."

He moved from bush to bush, gathering as many yellow flowers as he could find, and making sure they had long enough stems to be able to wave them together. Of course, tying flowers together was no easy task. And it was even worse with hooves but thankfully Kahiau had some back up. He'd call upon her shortly though, for now, it was just Suppression and him.

He talked a lot. Far more than Suppi had ever heard anyone else speak! Then again, she had been raised by two individuals who didn't typically speak unless they had to. As a result, Kahi's constant chatter was enough to distract her and her milky gaze followed him around the bushes as he began to harvest the flowers. Even from here she could spot that he was being very selective; he only ever picked the best flowers and even then, if they didn't have a long enough stem, he wouldn't touch them. As odd as it might have sounded, Suppi rather liked it - she didn't like needless pain and to pull out a flower and then discard it because it didn't make the cut would have upset her.

...It hadn't asked to be pulled out and it wasn't its fault that it's stem was short!

She continued to watch him in this manner until he made reference to her tail. His compliment had been so random and unexpected that the filly could do nothing more than blink. A few moments later she turned her head, twisted her tail round and took a minute or so to regard it. For an individual who was particularly imaginative, one might have said that she and her tail had 'exchanged glances'. To her, it was just a spaded appendage that did nothing more than cause animals to chase her off. It 'confirmed' what she was, a monster (as if the teeth weren't enough).

"Thank you," she replied quietly, a small smile toying at the corner of her lips as she dropped her tail behind her again. He may not have been able to see the smile, but the filly was touched by the compliment anyway. She'd never received one before! However, her own lack of self confidence was quick to remind her that he hadn't seen all of her and the moment he did see, he would run away.

No one liked her face.

'Cept her parents, but they were special.

"My favourite colour is yellow too," she added shyly and then shook her head. "So, I just want yellow - please," she continued, remembering her manners at the end. It was then that she lapsed in to silence, at a loss as to what to say, completely unused to the company of anyone outside of her mother. But wait, hadn't he said that he didn't have any friends? How could that be right, it made no sense! He looked nice, according to her understanding of the world, that meant he should automatically have them.

"How can you not have friends?" she asked, her tone confused. "You are meant to have friends..."
PostPosted: Tue Mar 15, 2011 7:10 pm

The pale eyed colt was so intent on his task picking out the perfect flowers for his new friend, that it didn't occur to him that she was purposely hiding her face from him. Some soquili really were quite shy, after all, and he didn't want her to feel pressured. No, if she wanted to keep sticking close to the bushes, he'd let her. Maybe they were a comfort to her and maybe, just maybe, once she felt more at ease with him he could draw her away. For now though, all Kahiau wanted to do was make her the prettiest flower necklace (or crown) that he could! And talk. But talking was second nature.

"See? Isn't it fort. . . for-too-itous . . .fortuitous . . .that we met?" He stumbled over the word, but had heard his mother speak of it a time or two. He knew it meant something along the lines of being lucky or . . something . . . and he was glad to have met this shadow filly by the lake! She liked yellow flowers, and anyone who liked flowers, or yellow, was good by him! "Now we can both like yellow and flowers together! I'm kind of yellow too, which is why I think I like 'em, though roses are nice too. Sometimes even they can be yellow, or so my mama said." He rambled, pausing now and then as he continued to prune the bushes with his teeth an select some of the flowers he discovered.

Glancing over at her, pausing in his work for a minute he gave a little shrug and grin. "Well, you're meant to have friends too, which is we can be 'em! I guess I don't have any because it's usually just Mama and me. And sometimes we travel, though we've been in this area awhile. I haven't had a chance to meet anyone my age who wanted to be my friend," he added. "So if . . .if you wanna be friends you can be my very first!" He looked over at her, and while he seemed fairly relaxed, there was a note of wistfulness that colored his tone.

Honestly, Kahiau really wanted to make a new buddy. He didn't have any and just knew Kaiya would be pleased to hear of his adventure! Glancing back at his collection of flowers, he gave his tail a little shake before adding, "You're not 'fraid of raccoons, are ya?" He questioned, though his gaze stayed on the flowers.

Suppi wasn't entirely aware of what 'fortuitous' meant, but she hazarded a guess in the hopes of keeping up with his rambling. Whatever it meant, it seemed to imply a positive outcome of some description so she wasn't going to stamp that out. Heck no, if it was positive she would rather encourage it, the more positive moments the better...maybe she could even escape from this encounter a tiny bit elated that it had gone so much better than any of her previous meetings!

The way he spoke of friends and how everyone was meant to have them was a touch naive to her. At least this was her take on the matter - not everyone in the world was meant to have them. She knew this as a fact because she had seen natural selection in action and by definition she wasn't met to have any form of companion. Nevertheless, his insistance that everyone was meant to have company was nice in a sense, it was something she would have enjoyed immensely if she was entitled to it in the same way he was. To think, a day when she could go out and play without being chased off - where she could actually laugh and giggle like a normal child... She sighed wistfully at this.

Alas, she was no normal child and this would never happen.

"Only certain soquili are allowed friends," she corrected him and shuffled uncomfortably behind her bush. "D-dangerous soquili aren't allowed them cause o-others will get hurt," she pointed out gently. Her tail coiled around her hind leg for reassurance and she continued to watch him harvest the last of his flowers. It was only when the wistful note crept into his voice and he offered his own friendship that she hesitated; it would be rude to disagree, but if he knew the truth he wouldn't ever want to come near her again.

"I um..." she hesitated. "I'm not a very good friend to have," she said at last and looked away. "Your mother would tell you off for being near me," she added. There, that seemed reasonably polite and wasn't a complete rejection - she liked him, but she was also a realist. He was meant to have amazing friends and she did not constitute 'amazing' anything... well amazingly scary maybe but that wasn't something she was proud of.

A moment of silence and she freezed at the mention of raccoons.

"Oooooh," she sounded nervous. "They're scared of me," she murmured uncomfortably.

Kahiau's ears pricked as he listened to what his new friend said. He was greatly confused by her words, so confused he looked up from his flowers and studied her. She was still shyly hiding behind the bushes, but he saw her silver eyes and her black pointed ears. And she did have a mane, he quietly pointed out, one that was all sorts of pretty shades of black! "That's not true," he stated, allowing a large smile to cross his features as he looked at her. "My Mama . . . My mama says that all soquili and creatures should be loved. Even the scary and dangerous ones, yep! I mean, you gotta be careful if someone wants to come out and eat you or be mean but. . . that doesn't mean they shouldn't have the chance for love and friendship." He nodded firmly, believing very firmly that his mother was correct and wouldn't steer him wrong.

"Sometimes . . . sometimes my Mama does get hurt by bad guys. But she still tries to offer them friendship and love, even if they don't want it. She. . .she hopes for them, that's what she does. And while I know to be careful around strangers, I also know that some of the meanest, and scariest looking can be awful nice! Just like some of the nicest looking ones can be really mean!" The difference of appearance and personality was fascinating to the young colt. But he knew better than to judge by looks alone. "You gotta be careful around everyone you meet, but ultimately it comes down to how they act."

The fact that his new friend denied her title caused Kahiau's brows to nit and he shook his head vehemently. "That's not true at all! You're a very good friend! You're nice and talk to me and, while kinda shy, are even letting me make you a flower necklace! No one lets me do that." He added, giving a little shrug and small sigh. He honestly didn't have many friends, and didn't know many others out and about. All of his older siblings were long gone and rarely visited. While he loved his mother, he couldn't help but want to get to know others, and have other foals to play with. "And my Mama is awfully nice too! She'd want to meet you and cuddle you I bet, honest! I've never seen her get mad or be mean to anyone." This little filly was most unusual. It was sad though, that she thought such negative things about herself and was under such a skewed view of the world. Surely Kaiya hadn't steered him wrong when they'd talk! Yes, he knew he had to be extra careful since since sometimes his mother made enemies by trying to be nice to them, but . . . he was safe here, and safe with Suppi. She deserved lots of friends!

"Well, I have a pet raccoon who's my buddy. He's awful nice and wouldn't be scared of you, I promise. But he just needs to come and help me tie these little flower stems up, yep. Do . . .do you mind? I can keep him over here if you think he'd be afraid, but I promise he's awfully nice!" Kahiau just didn't understand why she thought she was scary. So she liked to hide in bushes, that was no reason for someone to be considered frightening! She obviously wasn't some bush monster.

What he said was surprisingly poignant for the mare; he spoke so vehemently about the topic and yet he had no idea who he was speaking to. He was speaking to one of those 'scary' creatures and the only reason he wasn't aware of that was because he hadn't seen her. She'd heard foals say this to her before, they'd been determined not to judge anyone by how they looked but the second they saw her... No, it was more accurate to say that the second their parents saw her, things became decidedly hostile. She didn't even have to say anything, all they saw were the teeth and they would immediately tug their children away from her and out of her immediate vicinity.

However there was something different about his words and how he presented them. While all those foals had made reference to their own personal views, they had never mentioned their parents. In striking contrast to those foals, Kahiau had made frequent reference to his mother and her apparent determination to break that trend. It stirred an unusual number of emotions in the filly's chest, some of concern while others were of a more positive nature - optimism, hope... The concept that another might be able to stand nearby without viewing her as a horror was a dream she had never thought to be possible.

...But here he was.

She fidgeted just a touch uncomfortably, holding her pieces as he deviated towards the topic of his raccoon again. He was being so nice to her, making so many offers to make her comfortable and yet she knew that eventually, he would still have to see her. When the necklace was finished, he would have to put it on her and the only way to do that was to see her face to face. Suffice to say that the filly didn't really want such a pleasant encounter to end but eventually it would and she would prefer that it was sooner rather than later - if he saw her now, then he could run away without wasting anymore time on the necklace and she could avoid scaring the raccoon at the same time.

This in mind she took a deep breath and very tentatively stepped out from behind the bush, with her milky gaze lowered to the ground she looked decidedly uncomfortable. However, she couldn't hesitate anymore and biting the bullet, she revealed herself, allowing Kahiau to see her what she was... rather spectacular teeth included.

"If he wouldn't be afraid of this, then that's okay," she murmured quietly.
