Impressions

Q: During Impression, do all candidates wear white robes? What do they look like?
A: The candidates in most Weyrs wear white robes. Boys wear white pants with them, girls wear white dresses. It is possible for someone to use a male uniform as a female or vice versa and sneak on the opposing side, but they could get in a lot of trouble for it.

Some places do not follow this tradition. See each location's guide for more info!

Q: How does Impression work?
A: Please see the Impression guide for more info.

Q: Can my character Impress if they aren't a candidate?
A: Yes. Please see the Impression guide for more info.

Q: Can those from different Weyrs go between to visit other Weyrs during a hatching?
A: As of now, Telgar and High Reaches are (hesitantly) allowing their riders to visit each others hatchings. Some people may not react kindly to these invaders, especially the people of Telgar toward High Reaches. Bringing a non-rider to a hatching is forbidden with no exceptions. If someone brought a candidate from High Reaches to Telgar and they Impressed, there would be a lot of trouble on both ends.

Ghenza does not allow visitors to their hatchings at all, nor does the Islands.

Q: What are the age restrictions on Impressions?
A: Anywhere between (or at) 12 and 30. Note that it is not recorded in history anyone Impressing over 21, so the characters will find older new riders a surprising thing! OOC, this change is new; the previous age bracket was 12 to 21.

Q: Are there any sexuality or gender restrictions on who can Impress what?
A: Yes. Please see the guide here.

Q: Will a dragonet really go between and suicide if there isn't a rider match? My character is right there without a dragon!
A: That may be so, but we match pairs, the keyword being match. If a dragon has no match, it will go between. This doesn't happen often, and when it does, 4 out of 5 times we had planned in advance for that dragon to not be matched with anyone. You could say these dragonets are NPCs in a sense. They're there to make the hatching seem more accurate.

Q: Can my character be injured or die during a hatching if a dragonet injures them too badly?
A: Your character may be injured without informing you before hand during a hatching; however, they will never be injured to the point it will do any permanent damage or kill them without your permission. If you want your character to die in the hatching, PM staff.

Dragons

Q: Can dragons harm humans?
A: Yes and no. Newborn dragons can harm humans because they don't yet know better. Usually, this will be accidentally, but a hatchling may pounce for other reasons, especially if they feel someone is trying to keep them from the one they chose to Impress. Once Impressed, dragons will never directly harm a human no matter how much they want to. Think of how if you really wanted to go outside and fly around your house, no matter how much you wanted to, you couldn't.

Q: Can dragons harm each other?
A: Yes. Although they were created to just instinctively know not to fight, this is no longer so. They would have to really hate each other or be feral (in the case of white dragons), though. It is more unlikely a dragon will harm a queen (unless they themselves are a gold, too), but if they do so, they will still listen when the queen tells them to stop.

Q: Does mood effect a dragons eye color? What if mine is sad but trying to hide it?
A: Unless a dragon can convince themselves they aren't upset (such as being in denial), their eyes will show their mood no matter if they want them to or not.

Q: What colors does the shop have?
The standard gold, bronze, brown, blue and green. Recently, white, red, purple and black have been added. The new colors are all mutants that have evolved over time. There are also some dragons with a mutation known as 'blending' where more than one color may appear.

Q: How rare are 'new' colors versus standard colors?
A: They are all rare than standard colors. Purple is the most common, followed by red. White is extremely rare and black is the rarest dragon in the entire shop. They are genetically weaker and largely recessive.

Q: How are new colors obtained?
A: The same way as standard colors, but only at Nowhere Island.

Q: What role does color play in a dragons life?
A: It depends on where they are. For example, Telgar has a much more color-bias viewpoint than Ghenza would. Look at the guide of specific Weyrs to learn more about how they view the issue.

Q: How big are dragons?
A: It varies by color. There is an ongoing debate as to what is canon, but the shop follows this chart. The larger dragon of a color represents the largest size for that color, while the smaller is, obviously, the smallest. Most dragons will fall in between these two sizes.

There may be some specific exceptions. Additionally, the dragons of Ghenza and the Nowhere Islands (who originated in Ghenza) are larger than normal dragons. Not by tons, but enough to be noticeable.

For new colors, they are the equivalent of some standard color counter parts: whites are the same size as greens, purples are the same size as blues, reds are the same size as browns and blacks are the same size as golds.

Q: Do dragons talk?
A: Yes, they speak through telepathy!

Q: Can dragons speak with anyone other than their rider?
A: Yes! Dragons can speak with each other and with whers. They can talk to firelizards, but they are not coherent enough to answer (the firelizards). Dragons can also speak to other people. This is fairly uncommon among most, but there are some exceptions, and in some places dragons do talk to everyone. See each Weyr's guide to find out more!

Q: If Dragon A, Dragon B and Dragon C are in the same room, and Dragon A tells Dragon B something they don't want Dragon C to hear, can Dragon C hear it?
A: If dragon A spoke to dragon B directly, then no other dragon would be able to hear that, no matter how close they were. If dragon A is, however, doing what's called "broadcasting" (which is essentially the same as talking, only it would be to the minds of any dragon within range who wanted to listen) then dragon C could 'hear' the conversation. But generally speaking, unless dragon A is intentionally talking to multiple dragons, nobody else would hear what they had to say to dragon B. Riders may even not be privy to that kind of conversation if their life mates are keeping them out.

Q: How far can a dragon "broadcast" then?
A: A gold can broadcast to the entire Weyr. Other colors can broadcast within the range a normal person could scream at other people. Just use common sense when deciding. The books are hazy on this topic, but we've decided to go with this for simplicity sake.

Q: How close does a dragon have to be to speak to their rider?
A: A dragon can speak to their rider from any range. The only exception is if one of them is between.

Q: Can a dragon speak to another dragon or a human (not their rider) one-on-one from far away?
A: Dragons must be in hearing range to speak with humans that aren't their rider. For dragons, they may speak to other dragons from a very far distance if they know that dragon. For example, the Weyrleader's dragon could speak to the Weyrwoman's dragon from far away, but they wouldn't be good at honing in on any dragon from another Weyr. If they've never met the dragon at all, they can not speak to them directly.

Q: How do you determine which lines a dragonet will be on?
A: It's rather simple, really. The baby stage comes in five varieties based on personality that are not color biased; any color may be on any line. An especially grouchy dragon would be on the angry lines. Sometimes, a dragon will have a personality that is suitable for more than one line, in which case it would just be up to the colorist. For example, if that angry dragon is also lazy, he may be colored on the lines where the dragon is laying down.

Q: Do all dragons have to obey queen (gold) dragons? Does a blue have to listen to a bronze because they're a 'higher' color? Or is it only the golds they have to listen to?
A: Golds always come out on top. It doesn't matter if there's a 60-year-old bronze and the gold is two; the bronze has to listen, she's a queen.. However, if a goldrider allowed abuse of this power there would be serious IC consequences, rest assured. If someone abused it OOC, there would be more serious OOC consequences
.
No dragon but gold has the "ability" to tell another what to do in that they would have to do it. A bronze can try to boss a blue around, and he may listen or he may not. With the exception of gold, it all comes down to personality. Technically, any dragon can boss any other dragon around if that dragon is submissive.

Q: If a gold can tell other dragons what to do, what if they try to order around another gold?
A: Senior golds are listened to above all else, including over other golds. Golds that do not belong to the Weyrwoman are not considered the senior gold (even if that gold is technically older). If a gold orders a blue to jump and a senior gold orders them not to, the blue will not jump.

In the case of two senior golds from different Weyrs trying to tell each other what to do, their 'abilities' cancel each other out. If two senior golds from different Weyrs attempt to command something from another color, the dragon will listen to their senior gold.

Q: Can a gold control a dragon's rider?
A: A dragon can never control a person unwillingly under any circumstances other than that person being submissive except in the case of black dragons, and that control is completely unintentional.

Q: If my character is unhappy with the way a gold is treating their dragon or other dragons, who do they talk to?
A: The senior Weyrwoman. She'll handle it. To have them get in touch, contact the player of said Weyrwoman OOC. If you're unsure who that is, just PM the mule. If the offender is senior Weyrwoman and it's bad enough, well it just might be time to overthrow 'em! PM the mule if you have a character that wants to attempt this.

If you are a goldrider, you accept this as a possible IC consequence / conflict. Even if your character is falsely reported, IC is IC and characters will react accordingly. OOC feelings are not to come into play. It's RP, relax!

Q: My rider/dragon is unhappy with their Wingleader. Who do they talk to?
A: The Weyrleader. See the above question and just swap 'gold' for 'wingleader' and 'Weyrwoman' for 'Weyrleader'. If there isn't a Weyrleader, PM the mule to ask who they should go to.

Q: I am unhappy OOC with the conduct of a Wingleader / goldrider IC. Who do I contact?
A: If you feel a goldrider or wingleader is really godmoding, PM the mule and we will sort things out. Note that wingleaders and golds are supposed to tell people what to do to an extent. But if a gold was bossing everyone around constantly and receiving (or not accepting) IC consequences as a result, then yes, that's godmoding and you should contact staff.

(We're not trying to insult you, goldrider / wingleader players. XD The question has been asked and we need it here just in case.)

Q: When do dragon's start breathing fire?
A: Dragons chew firestone to produce flame, in an act known as 'flaming'. Flaming lessons don't begin until a dragon is able to fly with the weight of their rider. The same is true for golds with flamethrows.

Q: At what age can dragon's go between?
A: Not until they're fairly far into adolescence.

Q: At what age can dragon's travel outside their homes?
A: Not until they are full grown adults can dragons travel. Even if they can go between, they are not permitted to leave the Weyr without permission and could get in a lot of trouble!

Q: When can riders leave the Weyr?
A: Riders with adult dragons can travel with a good reason at any time. If someone is bouncing back and force uninvited, they might get in trouble. If their dragon is too young (see above), they will have to hitch a ride with someone else and leave them behind.

Q: Which place has the biggest dragons? How much bigger are they?
A: Ghenza and the Nowhere Islands (as their hertiage is from Ghenza) have the largest dragons. They are not massively larger, but enough to be noticed.

Q: Does my rider have to die if my dragon does?
A: No. Riders may choose to die with or after their dragons, but it is not an OOC requirement nor is it realistic to expect there is no personality type strong enough to handle the loss OC, as devastating as it is. How a rider handles their dragon's death depends only on the rider's character.

Q: Okay, but if I kill my rider, can my dragon still live?
A: No. Riderless dragons will go between. The only exception is queens who are about to lay eggs or have unhatched eggs. Those dragons may wait just long enough to see their children Impress and then they will go between.

Q: How do dragons fly? They seem too big for their wings to support them!
A: Dragons are also capable of telekinesis, though this ability is unknown and used in an unconscious manner (to augment flight). It is speculated that the undersized wings were intentionally created in the dragons to reduce the surface area of a dragon that is exposed to possible Thread injury, and that the telekinesis was intended to make up for the loss of wingsail.

Q: I read in one of the books about these cool Jedi mind powers riders have over other people. Do they have that here?
A: No. This ability is not canon to the shop because it just leaves too much potential for abuse of power.

Q: Is HAD (Hear All Dragons) off limits?
A: These are canon, and characters will know about them IC. Many people have never met one, however, and so there are those who doubt their abilities. OOC, these characters are only available through special events.

Q: I want my dragon to time travel. Can I do it?
A: Dragons are forbidden from time travel (also known as 'timing', 'timing it' or the past tense 'timed') IC. There is no OOC penalty, however, it is unrealistic that most dragons or riders would even know how IC. If you intend to use this for RP purposes, you need to PM staff for permission first.

Q: I don't want to RP a mating flight.
A: Then you don't have to. You can just assume it happened IC, even with an NPC if you want. If you do RP one, they must be kept PG-13 or taken off Gaia.

Q: I don't want my dragon to rise at all. Is that okay?
A: If it is within your dragon's character to never mate, then yes, that's fine. Unless you own a gold or black dragon. They have to rise. They may not like it, but it is their duty to do so since only they can lay eggs and continue the dragon lineage. The shop controls the clutch for both.

Q: So the shop controls my gold's clutch? That's no fair! I want to give them to my friends!
A: Giving out the shop's dragons to your friends isn't fair. The shop makes the dragonets personalities, does the coloring and the matching. Your gold will be involved IC, but OOC, all choices are our own. The breeding in Pern RPs is different from other shops. Dragons who can breed are too rare to play favorites among players. This does not apply to firelizards or whers.

Q: I heard greens are infertile because they chew firestone. If my green doesn't chew firestone, can she have a clutch?
A: No. This is a widely believed old wives tale. Greens are infertile regardless of if they have chewed firestone or not.

Q: If I do RP flights, how do they work?
A: Certain rules must be followed. For example, only certain colors can catch a black or a gold. In the past it was expected both OOC and IC only colors capable of it would try, but now any color dragon is welcome to try and chase any other color as long as they abide by the rules in the end. Female dragons rise and males chase them. It is up to the owner of that dragon to decide who catches them.

Greens - Can be caught by any male color.
Whites - Can be caught by any male color, but are extremely vicious and should be approached with caution.
Golds - Can only be caught by browns (rare), reds (rare, but slightly less so than browns) or bronzes.
Blacks - Can only be caught by browns (rare), reds (rare, but slightly less so than browns) or bronzes.

When a dragon rises, the rider of that dragon has their mind overcome by their dragon's intense emotions. They seek out the rider of the dragon that catches their owner. Any dragon who is rising or chasing a rising dragon effects their riders. Riders of dragons who chased a rising dragon but failed may have relations with the Weyr workers or other failed riders as a substitute.

Q: My rider is too big a badass mofo to be effected by a mating flight.
A: Sorry, but nope. All riders with rising / chasing dragons are effected, even if their dragon loses.

Q: Will a rider remember anything from the mating flight? Will a dragon?
A: If riders remember anything, it will be very vague. Dragons will remember based on their memory.

Q: Does having a mating flight effect the characters beyond the obvious? Will they then become weyrmates?
A: No. Not even the Weyrwoman and the Weyrleader have to like each other.

Q: Will my dragon ever die?
A: Not unless you kill them IC from an illness, injury or their riders death. Since the shop does have a timeline, we'd like it to be respected in terms of the elderly.

Q: How good of a memory do dragons have? It's pretty short, right?
A: Yes and no. Naturally, their memories rarely extend longer than a few days. Ghenza has developed a herbal mix that somehow improves brain function, making a dragon's memory the equivalent to a humans. All dragons are now being offered this mix with the exception of dragons that belong to Nowhere Islands' prisoners or those that have riders that don't allow them to eat it for whatever reason.
