The seasons were changing and with these changes Dir first saw more colors, bright oranges, fierce reds, and threatening yellows, and then they were all snatched away by the dulling browns of winter, only to become covered with the blanketing white of snow. Now every morning when he woke, he found snow on the ground. Where had all of the colors gone?
He sat at the edge of the field, looking out and over more rolling hills beneath and expanding toward the horizon. He had grown over the last little while, quickly making his way towards what would be his adult size, but still he stayed close to home. His mother and father were just two fields over, and he rarely strayed any further than this. For now, he had no need to. And in the future, perhaps he would stray further, to see what he could see, but for now he was content to try and study everything in these fields, and everything that came across them in visits. And he welcomed these visitors, these wandering souls, because he had yet to meet anyone of a more sinister manner. The foal still had a positive outlook on life, even though it didn't always sound like it when he spoke. He could be blunt, and hurtful because of it, but never on purpose. Incapable of lying, this growing foal was always speaking his mind. Sometimes even when not wanted. But that was something he was working on, and something that he would eventually get better at.
His fluffy mane and tail rustled in the wind, whipping around his face as he looked out at the white scenery below. He asked himself quietly, "Where have all the colors gone?"

Rainbow Sky trotted along, amused with the crunch of snow under her cloven hooves. The vivid colors had turned gray and withered, but the young kirin still saw beauty in the world. It was a blank canvas awaiting Spring to paint it again.
Strolling through the white fields, she saw something green milling about and walked toward it, curiosity piqued. It was a foal... with wings. How interesting. Slowing her walk so as not to frighten the young foal, she dipped her head a little, trying to seem smaller and less threatening.
"Hello, little one," she called softly. "Why are you alone out here?"

Lost in the details of the world around him, he didn't notice the stranger approaching until she was very near and calling to him. His head jerked over to look in the direction of the voice and what he saw was a very pleasant sight. She was kind-looking, and every color of the rainbow, just the very thing that he was thinking was missing. His ears perked up and a happy smile made it to his muzzle as he turned the rest of his body to face the nearing kirin.
Calmly, as he felt no threat from this mare, nor did he usually assume the worst of others, Dir replied, "I'm studying. And my parents are not far off!" He nodded back over his shoulder to indicate the field over one.
He looked the mare over in great interest from where he was, not wanting to be invasive or pushy. He would wait for permission to get closer and look at her better, but for now even just looking at her dazzling colors was enough to keep his mind busy and stray from the usual introductions that came at first meetings.

Sky dipped her head more as the colt came closer. She had heard of the Flutter Soquili before, but never met one till now. She took in his coloring, noting how his wings reminded her of the delicate wings of a moth or butterfly.
"It must be fantastic to fly," she said, the words just coming out of her mouth, and then blushed slightly, hoping she had not offended the youngster. After all, he might not be able to fly yet and she could just be rubbing that fact in.

The little foal tilted his way, this way and that, completely caught up in the changing colors and the wonder at how they could blend together so smoothly, so perfectly. So it was no surprise that the statement made him jump.
Shaking his head to clear it and pay attention he smiled up at the young mare and spoke honestly, as he didn't know any other way, "It's hard work! Especially when small!" He nodded sagely a small scowl emerging in his brow to quickly wither away. "I'm starting to learn how to shrink! Takes a lot of concentration though. And the wind seems a hundred times stronger when I'm small!"

"You change size?" the mare asked, amber eyes widening a bit. "Goodness, you are an interesting little fellow, aren't you? What's your name? I'm Rainbow Sky, but most just call me Sky."

His brow wrinkled a little. Didn't she know that flutters could change size? "Yes! That's what flutters do! So we can fit inside the flowers and drink the nummy nectar inside. Mmmmm...." His eyes fluttered shut at the memory of the sweet liquid, his favorite treat. Those same eyes snapped back open when she shared her name.
Ears perking up again, the little foal stood a little taller and introduced himself, "I'm Samandiriel. But I go by Dir. Kinda like the animal. You know, with the antlers and short stubby tail." A wide grin completed the happy little picture. He was always happy to meet others, especially if they were colorful.

"Dir is a very pretty name," the mare said, smiling at the colt. He did seem like a nice young foal. "I can't say I've ever had nectar. I never even heard of it before now. Is it very good?"

He beamed at the compliment, quite the childish little foal still, young, but quickly learning. He liked this mare. But how was he supposed to explain nectar?!
His eyes widened and then he became confused, how was he going to explain nectar to someone who had never even heard of it before?! "Well...." he started off, before jolting back up to look at her, all excited-like. "Have you ever had honey? Or.... or sap! It's kinda like those! It's very sweet and... and... more like water... not as hard as sap. And it's inside of flowers. Bees and butterflies drink it too."
There. He was very proud of himself for managing to come up with some sort of explanation, whether it made sense to the mare or not.

Sky smiled at the explanation. She didn't get it, but she understood the colt liked it and that was enough for her. "And you flutters live off this nectar? Or can you eat grass and apples, too?"

He looked up at her all excited, and when she smiled in return that was all he needed. As far as he was concerned, she understood what he had said, so there was no need for him to worry over it. His tail swished back and forth as much as the fluffy thing could manage and he straightened up a little before answering her next question.
"We can eat all sorts of things! Grass, apples..." he glanced around and whispered quietly when he was sure no one else was listening, "...and sometimes... I chew on bark just for fun." Back in his normal volume, he added quickly, "Don't eat it though, just chew." A quick nod to affirm it too.

"You chew on bark? Is it tasty? I never tried it before," Sky said, ears perked forward. She was more than a little curious about the foal, having never met a flutter before. "What are you doing over here all by yourself instead of with your parents?"

"Mmm..." a small shrug of his small shoulders, "Doesn't taste like much. Kinda dry... but it feels funny. All bumpy and it can go mushy if you chew it for long enough!" A small chuckle, or giggle by the sounds of it, as he began to skip a circle around the pretty mare.
The mention of parents made him freeze for a moment, quite literally, all his limbs stopped moving entirely and even his tail was pin-straight... but only for a moment. He continued to skip as if it hadn't happened. "Oh, they're not far! I'm just exploring, that's all. Looking for pretty things," stopping to test the water, so to speak, he turned his head to look at the mare, and decided it was a good move to add, "Like you!" Girls like compliments, from what he'd been told.
