Antarctica is livable, why not Mars? The bigger question is, why not the Moon? I can only imagine the people who end up on Mars, everything they say will be censored first before we hear or see it.

A one-way trip to mars (pardon the pun) saves us a trip back.

With that, more resources can be devoted to the colony itself and not trying to return men and women to earth.

Much more economical, but perhaps... it has a chance of making people go mad. That would jeopardize the mission and ruin everything. A one way trip to a desolate world... maybe with another person. It will be interesting to see the psychological effects.

Well unlike the old colonies, Mars doesn't have water, crops, wild animals or sufficient oxygen. The early colonialists were able to be self-sufficient, but they had livable resources. Mars not so much. Now to say colonization is impossible is untrue. Scientists made what was called the biosphere. There was Bio 1 and Bio 2. It was completely sealed off and the people in Bio 2 lived there in a year without any help from the outside save for communication. It wasn't perfect, they were at eachother's throats in the end and supplies couldn't last forever. However if we made a biosphere that could support the astronauts long enough to align them and fly back, then we could do it.
