Azzo had his Ipod on dj styled headphones hanging around his neck. He was laying on his stomach in his bed, it was late when the phone was up to his ear and the faint sound of a song could be heard from the headphones. He could tell it was Love Story by Taylor Swift, he’d been listening to sappy songs for a while, he couldn’t help but blame his Grams.
“Hey Mel.” She’d called back sometime in the night, how she knew he wasn’t asleep was beyond him. His honey brown eyes were looking into the Mirror that hung on his closet door, it was strange. He let a nervous chuckle escape from his lips, “Oh what I wanted….”
He trailed off, how did he explain it? “Well… I’ve been doing some thinking…” He said softly, admittedly, he sighed at her voice, it’d been a while since he’d heard her sweet voice. “I was wondering… Mel… Um… well I don’t know how to ask it.” He continued.
He gave another chuckle when she assured him just to ask it. “Well… I was wondering if you’d go out with me…” He frowned as the other side of the line went silent; he let the silence sit to give her time to think. When the silence was getting where it was deafening he whispered, “Mel?”
He’d been thinking about how they’d been since Barren Pines. Sure things weren’t perfect between them and there was… those awkward times where she blushed and he either didn’t notice or just didn’t say anything. Like the time he asked about the cherry blossoms, perhaps he’d let it gone too long. Even his heart fluttered when their hands touched. It had just felt right when he was with her, and now she was quite no answer.
“Mel?” came his voice again, it sounded, scared.
His eyes fell and he set up softly, listening to her. Everything that had fallen into place, it was just right, they were right… Weren’t they? “You… but I…” He paused and in that silence, his world shattered. He was never one to even admit to crying. Even he felt the sting of tears coming to his eyes.
He nodded, realizing she couldn’t hear that he choked out. “I understand.”
The phone was hung up on her end before she could hear the uttered… “I think I love you song-bird.”
He fell back in his bed, looking up at the ceiling with it’s odd textured tiles and the puppets that hung there. The silence was choking him; he got up and put on his slippers. It was cold outside but he didn’t bother to grab much more than a robe. Sitting on his front steps he looked at the phone in his hand, what had he just done?
Why was he feeling like this? His dog eared hairstyle fell around his cheeks as his eyes were staring into his lap. The Ipod still there, the song had switched, it was playing Lips of an angel… Azzo’s features twitched as he struggled to shut the Ipod up. He couldn’t bear to listen to it, it was too much for him. He shook his head eyes narrowed, “It just goes to show Grams. You don’t know everything…”
