Ugh.
Claire was still extremely miffed over her lousy job at the training mission. Seriously, a Pidgey?! Not even one of its evolutions, or...!
She paused mid-step with a huff, putting one hand on her forehead and the other on her hip. Now was not the time to berate herself on this, nor time to dwell on it for hours to determine every possible way she could have done infinitely better than she had. No, now was time for something else. Something that was, at the moment, her top priority, the most important thing she had to do today.
It was time to make cookies.
Not just any cookies, oh no. These would be Zeus' reward for a job well done, and a reward for actually obeying her for the first time, so he needed something that would reinforce such behavior. It was awful she had to wait this long to make them - indeed, the mission was a couple days ago at this point - but she hadn't had the time nor the resources to make any.
She'd mostly been too busy trying to keep her beloved Pidgeot from mauling to death her new Pidgey. Maybe taking one hadn't been such a good idea...
Regardless, she was entitled to one pokemon, so obviously she had taken it. Whether or not she'd be able to keep it was another story entirely... And at this point, she decided as she continued towards the kitchen, it didn't seem very likely. No matter, she'd just have to find someone she could reasonably get along with to give it to at the soonest possible time, before the poor thing lost anymore feathers. The storage facilities had plenty of Pidgey already, and she was certain there would be someone who would appreciate having a bird pokemon. If they didn't already have one, that is. There seemed to be a lot of the bird-types running around the base lately.
With such distracted thoughts in mind, she stretched her hand out and carelessly threw open the door to the kitchen, intending to get this over with as quickly as possible. The sooner, the better, right?
A chubby, grumpy looking Pikachu was hot on her heels. He wanted his cookies right now.

The faint sound of a bell sounded from the far corner of the room. One of the cabinets, to be exact. Inside, a young Chingling had found a box of saltine crackers, and was triumphantly eating her prize after tearing off the top and ripping the side of a package.
Elsewhere, Alba wasn't in much better of a mood than Claire. Spook had wandered off for the umpteenth time, and every time he thought he was gaining on the bell sounds, there was yet another turn and another Chingling-free room or hall to travel through. It wasn't the first time he'd considered getting some sort of leash for her, either.
At long last, Alba recognized the area he had entered. He was nearing the kitchen, meaning the chase was probably drawing to a close. Thank Arceus! The bottomless pit of a Pokemon wouldn't be able to resist the temptation!

As Alba had yet to enter the kitchen, Claire thought that she would be alone for some time, the thought of which almost immediately relieved her permanently tense nerves somewhat. She hadn't heard the bell, but Zeus had, and his sensitive ears twitched before he rushed into the middle of the kitchen, leaving Claire behind as she rummaged around in the lower cabinets which, in typical houses and other places, usually housed the cookware and other such things. Food was reserved for upper shelves where it had less of a chance to be eaten by loose pokemon.
After loudly clinking a couple large bowls onto the countertop and pulling a canister of sugar and flour over, she set about searching for measuring cups.
Zeus ignored his owner as she went about her cookie-making business, snorting slightly in a way that seemed to say about damned time, and he jumped onto the counter beneath the cabinet he'd heard the tingling. Or he attempted to, at any rate - he didn't jump nearly as high as he'd hoped, and he managed to flop his upper half onto the counter while his chubby behind dangled off the side, legs flailing as he desperately tried to climb the rest of the way to save himself from such a dangerous, life-threatening situation. Luckily, his foot caught a handle and he was able to hoist himself up, and he sighed thankfully as he wiped an imaginary bead of sweat from his brow. Now that he was close to the hungry pokemon, he could hear the rummaging of the plastic bag that most crackers are kept inside. Hey..! If someone else was eating, he wanted to, too! With a humph after setting his face into a jealous pout, he stood on his tip-toes to try and stretch his chubby self up as much as possible, pawing at the cabinet handle in an attempt to open it. If only he was just a tiny bit taller...!

All sounds from within the high cabinet ceased, and a half minute later the door opened a crack. A quiet, "Chiiing?" floated out as Zeus was observed, before the door snapped shut again. There was some more rustling from within, the occasional "ling ling~," and finally, at long last, the door reopened. This time, it was easier to see the cracker sticking halfway out of Spook's mouth, and she extended one tassel toward her yellow visitor. In its grasp was an offering of one perfectly square, perfectly salted, cracker.
Hearing the noises coming from ahead, Alba quickened his pace to just short of a run. Oh no! What trouble had his Chingling gotten herself into this time?! "Spook!" he shouted as he barged through the kitchen door, and instantly skidded to a stop at the sight of another human. Darn it! "Ah- er- um- Sorry, miss," he stammered, embarrassed by his definitely rude and abrupt entrance. It was said that if a person acted like he knew what he was doing, no one would question if he intended his actions. Pfft, yeah, like he was doing a fine job at maintaining that image. He glanced around the room and coughed to try casually clearing his voice. "You, um, wouldn't happen to have seen a Chingling running around, would you?"

Zeus peered up curiously at the Chingling before the cabinet door was rudely snapped shut in his face, and he fell backwards onto his behind with an undignified squeak. He glared at the cabinet doors momentarily but that quickly disappeared when it opened again, and he was reaching up to take the offered cracker when Alba burst in.
Claire stopped with an egg in her hand, recently cracked and hovering over the largest bowl, and its inside slowly leaked out as she watched Alba curiously, her eyebrows raised slightly. "Umm... No, I haven't," she said slowly. Spook? What an odd name. Speaking of missing pokemon, she looked to the floor to try to see where Zeus went, but he wasn't there. Odd. She frowned before turning around and spotting him on the counter. "Zeus, get down!" Of course he'd been looking for food, and.. wait, what was that sticking out of the cabinet...?

Alba was just starting to retreat, throwing out several more apologies in the process, when he heard Claire shout. Looked like his wasn't the only pokemon with a troublesome side- DARN IT!! He recognized that tassel!
"I've... got this." As calmly as he could, Alba crossed the room to the hefty Pikachu and the cabinet in question, and carefully opened and held open the door. Ta da! One Chingling, and one ruined box of saltines. Surprise, surprise. He supposed he should just be happy she had thought to share. For a moment, human and Chingling alike simply stared at each other. Alba sighed and shook his head. "Dare I even ask where you put it all?" It looked as though the oversized bell was going to just keep on staring at her trainer in response. Well, right up until Alba made to move his arm. That would be when she suddenly launched from the cabinet, right into Alba's face. "CHIING~!!" The cracker she'd been holding onto fell forgotten to the counter, the one in her mouth had at some point vanished, and all of her attention was set on happily clinging to her trainer's face. All poor Alba could do was utter a cry of surprise, stumble back a few steps to catch his balance, and proceed to grumble and complain as he tried to pry the clingy bell away.

The chubby Pikachu ignored the man as he walked to the counter and quite easily shoved the entire cracker into his mouth. Brown-tipped ears twitched as the Chingling launched itself at its trainers face, but the only thing Zeus cared about in regards to that moment was the cracker that fell to the counter. It was swiftly devoured.
Claire's eyebrows raised again slightly, and an amused noise escaped her. "I guess your Chingling missed you while she was feasting on crackers, hmm?" Or maybe she didn't - the grunt knew that at least, in Zeus' case, he most certainly wouldn't miss her. The only thing he'd miss would be his chocolate. She paused a moment or two, the nagging feeling to say something tugging away at her before she conceded. "Spook - that's an interesting name. Why did you call her that, if I may ask?"

After much effort (and flailing), Alba freed himself with his own victorious, "Hah!" He held Spook out at arm's length, giving her a disapproving look. "Actually, I think she's just easily distracted," he answered in response to Claire's first question.
The Pokemon in question smiled innocently at her trainer. A beat passed, and Alba hesitantly released his hold under Spook's stubby arms. He kept his hands hovering just at her sides as she floated in mid-air, as though worried she might suddenly drop, or maybe just launch in any given direction again. Thankfully, the Chingling seemed to have calmed down from her hyperactive display, and she levitated safely to perch on Alba's left shoulder in time for Claire's second question.
"Hmm. I call her Spook because that's what she is: a real-life spook. She gets a kick out of just about every time she manages to scare the daylights out of me. I'm still trying to figure out why I keep such a little terror around." Though he was frowning sideways at Spook, there was no malice or resentment in his tone. If anything, there may have been a hint of fondness- not that Alba would ever admit it.

Another amused noise escaped the grunt as she watched the man struggle with his Chingling, and inwardly was slightly disappointed when he succeeded in freeing his face from the bell pokemon. It was quite an entertaining sight.
"Easily distracted?" She echoed, violet eyes flitting to her chubby Pikachu on the far counter, who was at the current moment attempting to reach the cabinet Spook had previously been occupying in the hopes he could get the remains of the battered box of crackers. "I think the only thing that easily distracts Zeus is food." Especially cookies or cake, or even moreso, chocolate. And chocolate cake? Forget it.
As far as the electric mouse was concerned, Claire's remark went unanswered as he kept trying to reach the cabinet, standing on one foot in an attempt to stretch himself as high as he could. Apparently he was on the short side, as well as chubby.
"Maybe she'd do better if you had another pokemon? That would probably keep her scare attempts off of you more." Especially if the pokemon was nervous. Hmm. "Do you have any other pokemon?" She added after a pause to dump the rest of the cracked egg in the bowl before discarding the shell. She'd nearly forgotten about it. Oops.

The corners of Alba's mouth quirked upward briefly as he listened to the woman and watched the Pikachu. Food as a distraction? That sounded about right. It had been food that had led the Chingling to him at the very start, and it wouldn't surprise him if it had been for the food that she had stayed. Alba's lips returned to a neutral line. Somehow, that odd thought hurt more than he would've expected. Without really noticing, he raised a hand to support the oversized bell that gripped the side of his head. "Ling~?" was the quiet response, but Spook otherwise stayed silent as she nuzzled against the hand. No, it hadn't only been for food that she had stayed. He was being stupid to think otherwise.
When the young woman asked about his other pokemon, Alba only had to think for a split second before he shook his head. "That's a thought. Spook here's my only one." Technically, he had a Skitty somewhere back in Kanto. But that thing had hated him, adored the ex, and all around wasn't a custody battle he had seen as worth the fight. His raised hand returned to his side, and both hands disappeared into his pants pockets as he straightened into his usual, casually at-attention pose. "I guess even pokemon get bored and lonely, huh?" He turned his attention back to the only other human in the room.
Spook, on the other hand, had drifted away from her Alba-perch, and redirected her own attention back to the heavyset Pikachu. Floating into the cabinet again was no trouble at all, and she landed on the counter next to Zeus a few seconds later. Proudly held over her head in her tassels was none other that the prized cracker box. She cheerfully attempted to tip the box in his direction.

The same had happened for Claire - if it hadn't been for Zeus' love of food, she never would have gotten the chance to catch him. It was sheer coincidence that she happened to be across the street as the chubby electric-type had jumped on top of a certain dumpster that was already occupied. She made another amused noise at the memory as she dumped a cup of sugar in the bowl, followed by brown sugar, before turning her attention back to Alba and his Chingling, but was distracted by Zeus.
The aforementioned Pikachu was ecstatic that the other pokemon brought down the box of crackers, and being one to bite off more than he could chew, he gleefully grabbed the open end of the box and pulled down, just as Spook was tipping it down - and succeeded in dumping the rest of the bag of crackers all over himself as he flopped onto his back on the counter.
Claire grimaced. Zeus really needed to learn some manners, but all lessons on that thus far had been a total failure complete with flying colors, sparkles, and rainbows. "I think they do," she admitted, eying Zeus reproachfully before turning her full attention back to the other person in the room. "Or at least, my Odette did, and then I got Zeus. He loves to torment her because she's a Pidgeot, and she seems to hate him. Deep down I think they enjoy each other's company, though," she added with a small smirk. Oh yes, neither pokemon would ever admit it, but she knew they really did enjoy the company. Sort of a love-hate relationship, as it were. "As long as they get along for the most part, I see it as a good thing. Now, if one absolutely abhors the new pokemon, and tries to kill it any chance it gets..." She sighed, reaching up to rub her temples. "Then you have problems."
She paused right then as the gears in her head visibly started to turn, and something clicked, violet eyes peering curiously at Alba through black and purple bangs without lowering her fingers from her temples. "Speaking of - would you like a Pidgey?"

In trying to keep the box steady, Spook over corrected for the dual tipping, and toppled backwards with a squeak as well. With such a rounded body, she had to levitate to right herself. As soon as she was up, though, she was wading through the sea of crackery goodness to the electric mouse, and moved to help him back on his paws. Her trainer kept his expression as indifferent as possible, even though he felt like a heavy sigh was in order. Instead, he listened to the woman's reply, and nodded his head the slightest bit in agreement as she spoke.
He came up short on how to respond to the Pidgey question, though, and blinked dumbly for a moment. "A Pidgey?" he repeated. Was that a hypothetical question, or was it some unknown Rocket practice to offer Pidgeys to the rookies? It certainly wasn't the most intimidating creature, but it was a Pokemon known to grow into something that could be rather formidable. "I... haven't given it much thought before." He really couldn't decide where Claire was going with that question, and the last thing he wanted was to assume the wrong thing and possibly offend.

Zeus flailed around in the sea of crackers for a few moments before the Chingling came to his rescue, and he wiped his brow with a paw, as if the struggle had been hard work. Claire sighed as she rolled her eyes. How did she end up with him? Oh well.
"Yes, a Pidgey," she repeated, searching his face for an appropriate reaction. Obviously he wasn't sure what to make of the offer - she'd be skeptical of such an out-of-the-blue offer herself - so her shoulders rolled in a shrug. "I didn't either, on the last field mission. I obtained a full team of Pidgey and decided to keep one, except Odette - a fully grown, incredibly vain Pidgeot, mind you - has determined that she is and will be the only bird I can own. Because of that, she has every intention of trying to kill, or at the very least seriously maim, the little Pidgey every chance she gets. I don't want to leave it in the public storage, so I've been trying to find someone to give it to before Odette kills it," she explained. The poor thing was probably scared to death of other birds, or at least, of this specific golden Pidgeot. "So, would you like it? I even brought it with me, but that was more because if I left its pokeball in my room with Odette, she'd peck it until the Pidgey got out and then I'd come back to a mess of feathers and no Pidgey." She sighed, rubbing her temples again. By Arceus, how she ended up with such incorrigible pokemon, she'd never know.

Spook jingled happily at Zeus' recovery. There was still the problem of their snack now being spread all over the counter, though. She pondered it for a few seconds, levitated to retrieve the bow without stepping on anything, returned to Zeus' side, and proceeded to start returning the crackers to the container. She'd been considered "wild" not a month ago. Even if Alba did take care to keep her well fed now, keeping spare food safely contained was still an instinct she followed.
Alba considered the offer. Or, at least, he appeared to be considering it. Truth was, his mind was decided the instant Claire mentioned the Pidgey possibly being killed or injured if it didn't find a new home. He'd never admit it, to himself or anyone else, but he really was a sucker for that sort of thing. "Well... I mean, yeah. That would be... great." This was Team Rocket he'd gotten involved in, right? First Lucas, with a Chimecho named Merry and an interest in guitar, and now this woman, with purple streaks in her hair and who baked cookies while discussing the welfare of one of the weakest bird Pokemon he could think of. These people were really part of the criminal class? His straight shoulders eased just the slightest.
With a nod to himself, he looked back to Claire and gave the smallest twitch of a grateful smile. "I'd be happy to take care of it for you. Oh, um, sorry." He briefly touched the knuckles of his right hand to his forehead in thought, then extended the hand to the young woman. "I burst in and didn't introduce myself or anything. Alba Ross. I just started here recently." It would've been obvious had he been wearing his issued trainee uniform. However, seeing as how this was his downtime, he'd ditched the uniform in favor of his own black slacks, and a white dress shirt with his preferred olive green sweater pulled over. His personal shoes were still in need of replacing, though, so he'd stuck with the issued black boots.

Zeus had been wild at one point as well, several months ago, but the city streets were nowhere to try and store food, especially when there was so much available in dumpsters and in unsuspecting gas station stores. So, while Spook was busy putting the crackers away, the Pikachu helped clean up the mess... by eating them. Hey, at least he was helping.
"Would you?" Claire asked, eyebrows raising. She figured he would anyway, but it was nice to get that confirmation. At least she could rest easy knowing Odette wouldn't be able to attack it anymore, though it would probably still be another week or so before the bird forgave her for bringing the smaller bird back in the first place. "Ah - I forgot as well. Nice to meet you, Alba," she replied, hesitating before taking his hand and giving it a firm shake. "My name is Claire."
And, just in case she might forget about it later and then not be able to find him, she pulled her hand back and plucked a pokeball from her belt before holding it out to him. "Here you go. I'm not sure what gender it is yet. Sort of hard to figure that out when an angry Pidgeot is chasing it around trying to maim it." Oh, Odette... What would she do with such a vain creature?
Not get another one, that was for sure.
