It was quite amazing, really, how the stars appear almost instantly after the sun disappears behind the horizon... It was as if they had been anticipating that moment the whole day. While he had been observing the spectacle since he was a foal, watching it from the sky was a whole new experience! In fact, it never gets old... Sometimes, he couldn't help but feel like he could grab a star with his mouth if he flew high enough! He smiled at the thought, looking down at the lake under his legs; from above, the still lake acted like a giant mirror, reflecting the stars in the night sky on its surface.
Flapping his wings once, Karius then spread them out in order to glide downwards, towards the water surface. His older brother had showed him a trick once - flying close to the lake, he used his hind legs to skim along the water surface, causing water to spray into the air. While he didn't have the aesthetic abilities of his beloved brother, Karius was still determined to master that particular aerial display.
Closer, closer...
Realizing that he was too close to the water surface, however, he frowned, flapping his wings to lift himself back up into the air. When he was soaring at a safe distance above the lake surface again, he looked down wistfully, staring at his own reflection. Aerial display attempt aborted; it would be bad if his wings got wet after all... He could lose altitude, fall into the water and potentially drown.

That had been quite a commotion. Night had fallen not too long ago, and the quiet mare had began to go about her business, always keeping out of sight from the waking predators that ruled this hour. Still, what had that been? Curiosity was a danger, particularly at night, but she crept along quietly towards the lake, only to find herself gazing at an entirely unexpected sight.
A stallion, soaring above the lake. Had she been naive, she might have found the sight enchanting, but could only think about how loud his wing beats were--and how much attention they must be attracting. She hesitated for a moment. It wasn't any of her concern, nor her duty to warn this stranger, but still... she didn't exactly feel comfortable just abandoning him to fate, either.
"If you keep that up, you might find yourself with unwanted friends." She did her best to raise her voice and call out to him, her own wings firmly tucked against her back though they itched a little to see another winging about so gracefully. Clearly he had experience.

He was going to dive down for another try when a faint voice caught his attention, causing him to hover in the air as he spun around, searching for the source. At the edge of the lake, Karius quickly spotted a mare, her white pelt sticking out against the surroundings. He flew towards her, landing gracefully behind her as he folded his wings, regarding her with a smile. Then, trotting up to her and putting his face within inches of hers, he tilted his head, "What sort of unwanted friends?"
Now that he was closer, he couldn't help but notice that she too, possesses a pair of wings that resembled his... Although there was no mistaking her tail either - he had learnt from his family that a tail of that description belongs to Kalona, a race infamous for being evil carnivores. However, Karius decided that since she didn't look like she was out to harm him, he should stick around... Her matching hair, eyes and hoofs made him happy somehow - he couldn't find anything mismatched about her. In fact...
"You're beautiful," He nodded with the same smile that had been on his lips since the beginning. Then, remember his manners (Father would be proud!), he took a step back, smile widening a little as he bowed his head in greeting, "Good evening... My name is Karius."

As the male elegantly swooped in for a landing, she righted herself to better face him. The thought of anyone behind her didn't make her comfortable--even if he didn't seem at all aggressive. At least, not so far. Before she could think much for on it, his face was suddenly mere inches from her own, and Nyx's mind went blank for a moment. What... was he doing? Embarrassed and caught off guard, she took a dainty step backwards, clearing her throat mildly. "Predators. Kalona. Maybe even a Skinwalker. Nothing that would do you any good."
The mare was suddenly aware of his attention, and though she'd received worse treatment than a simple, polite glance, she still couldn't help but let her spaded tail snake around one of her back legs. Her heritage... was she ashamed of it anymore? Certainly not proud, no, but no longer so... hesitant. Still, that didn't mean she was about to tell anyone anything--let them make their assumptions and prejudices!
Just as it crossed her mind to coolly ask him just what he was staring at, he--well, he did something that took her rather aback yet again. "I... what?" Nyx would have flushed if she was able, staring in open bewilderment at this strange, strange stallion. "Th... Thank you." She finally offered warily, not about to forsake her own manners out of confusion. "It's... nice to meet you, Karius. I'm Nyx."
There was an awkward pause, at least on her half, and she did her best to press into more conversation while trying to act as though he hadn't completely flustered her into a state of confusion. "...What were you trying to manage, with the lake?"

"I suppose it would be difficult to get out of trouble if I do run into a predator at this hour," Karius mused out loud with a thoughtful expression on his lips, the way he phrased his words suggesting that he didn't take that into consideration before embarking on his late night flight... All he thought about was how to leave undetected, seeing how his darling sister would surely object to him watching the sunset without her company. A short pause later, he nodded with a grin, "Thank you for the warning then! I'll be sure to keep it in mind!"
It seems to him that most he had spoken to give him the 'shocked' and 'surprised' look very often - even in the case of this mare, whom he had just met. However, he could never quite make out why and didn't find it important enough to ask.
"You're very welcome... Nyx." He smiled again, flicking his ears as the mare introduced herself; what an interesting name! It almost sounds foreign! At her question, he looked even more excited, more than willing to share as he inched towards her again, sub-consciously rather than consciously, "I was practicing an aerial stunt my older brother showed me when I was a foal; it was a really graceful stunt, and I had put my mind on mastering it... Its a work of art in its own way!"

Had the thought truly never occurred to him? Nyx caught herself staring for a moment before she minutely dropped her gaze, embarrassed by her lack of tact. His strange, absentminded cheeriness was disconcerting, and she wasn't exactly sure how to respond. The strange, pinned fabric around his neck and shoulders was next to snag her attention, and she had to wonder if it had been a gift from a two-legger. Though she didn't know how warm it would keep him, at least it didn't seem to be a hindrance to his flight...
As he inched closer yet again, she forced herself to hold her ground. He wasn't trying to see if she could be frightened, was he? She somehow didn't think so. "Ah, I... see." She couldn't relate to the thought of siblings; she knew she had them, but they were vague and distant memories.
"You enjoy flying then? Your family?" She asked absently, forcing herself to not dwell on her own memories. Her eyes snapped up to his face only to suppress a wince when she realized how close he was. Still. "...Is there something wrong?"

He stepped back again, inclining his head to look at the night sky, grinning as he nodded, "I enjoy flying very much, yes... The wind rushing through my mane, the world a blur beside me! Its very exciting." He then paused at her second question, frowning slightly as he shook his head, "My mother and some of my siblings do not possess wings, and even among those who do, some do not really enjoy flight as much as I do... My father, for example, is worried for the safety of my older brother - his aerial stunts can be rather... Dangerous."
Karius nodded again, his expression serious; while he enjoys a good stunt, he does understand the risks that go with it. Still, he trusts his older brother to know his limits! He then blinked, clearly confused, "Oh? No, there's nothing wrong... Why would you ask that?"
As his eyes landed on the wings folded at her side, his expression softened, looking at them with a curious tilt of his head, "How about you? Do you enjoy flying?"
