Hey everybody, Ive only been playing under a year. But i was wondering what kinda equipment and bass is good for playing heavy metal bass. I have a 5-string schecter with active E.M.G. pickups. Its pretty sweet. but what other basses are there? and what kinda strings are good?

GHS Bass Boomers for strings. Heavy or light, they sound great. The Flea version is my favorite.

Only use Fender strings, myself. Then again, I play on a Squier P-bass that's close to if not over 20 years old, so I figure the brand that makes the guitar as well is probably ideal for it.
If you're looking for an old Metallica sound, distortion is definitely in order. I have an OD pedal made by DOD that's actually for guitar, but works well enough on bass. Burton also used a Morley Bass wah, I use Crybaby, myself.
If you want to go to the other side of the good metal genre though (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest), then a pristine, clean sound is the way to go. In this case it's more about having the right tone in your amp, and having your EQ set properly. While maxing the bass and treble and turning the mid all the way down works wonders for lead guitar, it will kill your bass tone. Mids should be at least halfway up, and should never be set lower than your treble, in my opinion (at least not on bass, anyway). From there, play with the bass to determine the sound. If you want a very crisp sound (e.g. the intro to Killers, by Iron Maiden, or most Judas Priest stuff), keep the bass about halfway, maybe a tad lower. If you want the authoratative rumble of Burton's work, turn it all the way up (or at least as high as your speakers will allow for). I tend to avoid this as it tends to sound murky, though.

Really, I like the fuzz distortions, and strings aren't all that important to me as long as they fit. I bought strings for my bass and they were too short.
