Life amongst the Firekin was both everything like she'd expected it to be, and nothing like she'd expected it to be. She had come to the desert pride in search of her father and a home. After the success of her first duel with Etney and being welcomed as an official member of the pride, Ain had thought, rather naively, that all the pieces of her destiny would fall into place. They hadn't. There was no trace of the lion she should have been able to call father. The dry desert air and scorching heat were very much unlike the beaches and the sea that she was used to. But she had committed to this, and was determined to make a future for herself amongst the fearsome and respectable Motoujamii-Simo warriors. She stood humbly on the sand, where Iroh had agreed to meet her for this friendly duel, with the hot sun beating against the back of her head and a tentative smile on her face.

The Sergeant hummed to himself as he padded across the sand. His large body seemed to defy gravity, managing to walk on the soft grains of yellow without the white of his frame sinking and getting stuck. No, he moved effortlessly, with a well practiced grace, and soon found his goal.
"Good day!" he called jovially, smiling in his way. He had always been a friendly lion, as he did not believe being kind and open was a weakness. He padded right up to his new friend, bumping his head into hers in greeting. The thick cream mane softened the friendly bump to something akin to being hit by a ball of feathers.
"Are you ready for our duel then? How is the day finding you, by the way? Are you getting accustomed to this place?" He stopped himself from asking more questions, just closing his eyes and grinning at her, very aware that he was being silly by asking so much at one time.
He moved back from her, humming as he found what he thought to be a good distance. He crouched a bit, swinging his tail behind him. "Any time you're ready!"
Iroh loved duels. He felt that strength came from a well practiced body, keen muscles and sharp skill. But it also came from letting oneself have fun, and duels were a perfect combination, most of the time, of fun and training. Of course, strength came elsewhere as well, from knowledge and heart, but the latter could only be learned, yet not truly taught, while the former could be taught, but the learning came from experience.

As a former rogue and a newcomer to this most illustrious of prides, Ain had a very sincere appreciation for Iroh's genial and open nature. He was still mostly a stranger, but also a very welcome figure in her life. It was good to have friends. Ain was honoured to be able to count this powerfully built lion as one of hers.
The tentative smile on her face transformed into a full blown grin at the sight of him gliding across the sand. The steady grace with which he moved was something to be at once envied and admired. Ain did both. She had been trained by her grandmother, before the old lioness's death, and prepared for life amongst the Firekin with a heartfelt passion. But Ain was young still, and had nothing of his practice.
"It is a good day!" Ain shone companionably at Iroh, and returned the feathery bump of his head with a little nudge of her own. He had asked a lot of questions, but she didn't mind. It was simply his way. She thought, for a moment, about her answers.
"I am still not quite used to the heat and the sand," came the admission, "but, this place is my home. I am content."
This was most of the truth.
When he moved away from her, she smirked. It was a playful thing, Ain crouched a little, mimicking him, and said, "I've been looking forward to this."
Because she had. Ain was not an especially big lioness, but she was light on her feet and very clever. This made her a reasonably adept Guard. It was a part of her duty to patrol the borders, and another to be able to defend herself if the situation required.
Lips twitched a little at their corners. Blue eyes twinkled. And then, kicking up clouds of sand and dust, Ain launched herself at Iroh with a mischievous growl.

Iroh grinned at her, nodding his head at her answer. It would take some time to get used to the sun and the heat, of course. Iroh was lucky, in one way, as his light coat didn't absorb the heat like others, like he imagined hers did. But it also didn't protect him from being burned by the sun, which was never fun.
But he had gotten used to balancing his time in the sun and sitting under cover. So it wasn't really a worry for him now.
He saw her crouching and laughed jovially, glad she was so keen on having fun. In truth, he had been looking forward to it, as well. When she lunged at him, he didn't bounce out of the way at first. Instead, he planted his feet and let her get closer before lifting his paw and batting her right on the nose. It wasn't a light hit, as sparring could get a bit rough, but he certainly wasn't trying to hurt her seriously.
Still, a big hit from a big lion was still a solid blow, whether he was trying to be nice or not.

Blinking rapidly, Ain reeled backwards a little when his big paw made contact with her nose, and let slip a gasp that sounded more surprised than it was pained. He had hit her hard enough to cause some temporary hurt, but it wasn't debilitating by any means. She was, actually, a little bit embarrassed that he'd managed something as simple as that so easily. This was more distressing than any blow could possibly be.
While not necessarily competitive, Ain still had the heart of a fighter. She'd spent all of her childhood under Grandmother's watchful eyes and capable paws. Ain was accustomed to order and to discipline. She knew how to take care of herself. She knew how to hold her own, and had proven this by winning the right to call herself one of the Firekin.
And then it was her turn to attack. Ain moved liked a black ball of lightning across the sand, and lunged at Iroh with her paw outstretched; intending to strike him across the face.
Her claws were not out, but she missed anyways.

Iroh watched her, eyes focused despite the playful smirk on his face. He knew better than to underestimate her, after all. She had every right to be in the Firekin, and anyone could have a surprisingly good fight or bad fight. It was never wise to judge someone by their experience, or their appearance, alone. He liked to take everything into account.
The lion saw her lunging at him, and jerked his head back in surprise. She went by him, but it was close, and he padded around to stalk her as she made to recover herself.
He didn't attack her while her guard was down, though, just watching her keenly and waiting for her to turn around and attack him straight on.
Iroh wanted to see what she could do, and more than that, he was having fun.

She might have been fast, but he, it seemed, was faster. This was only a little bit surprising. Iroh was a big lion, and a warrior. He had grown up in these lands; surrounded by the sand and the heat and, she suspected, that he'd never lacked for sparring partners. With the exception of Etney and a handful of rogues, Ain had only ever trained with her Grandmother. And, while the old lioness had given it her all, their lessons had come to a rather abrupt end.
Ain was tense and alert; profoundly aware of the steady sound of Iroh's breathing, and his graceful footsteps. She was prepared for an attack, and then thrown slightly when it didn't come. Turning slowly, smiling faintly, Ain darted forwards again.
She crouched low in front of him, eyes twinkling, and swiped at his nose with a paw. A breathless chuckle whispered passed her lips, because she was having fun too.
And totally baiting him. It was time to fight, and time to play.

Iroh laughed as she made to bat at him, swishing his tail behind him. He had an easy laugh, one he used often and came from the pit of his chest, causing a deep rumble of a baritone to fill the air. He watched her with his keen eyes, though they were warm and eager.
Sometimes he forgot his age, and reverted right back to being a cub.
A large cub.
He bounded at her, then around her, not staying in one spot for long as he bounced around in the sand and tried to disorient her. Really, he was just making himself tired, though it was a blast to do so. He swung his paw at her whenever he landed for long enough, though he never seemed to quite be close enough to land a hit.
He would get her, though, he decided, once he got behind her and could pounce.

There were a couple of shadows in her past, but Ain's was not a heavy heart. She was as warm and compassionate as she was independent and strong. Iroh's laughter inspired more of her own, and breathing became a bit of a conscious effort. If she got carried away all of that chuckling would exhaust her. But it was hard to do anything else, when Iroh was behaving the way that he was.
It was both a little strange and rather adorable to see a lion as big as he was act like such a child.
It did not occur to Ain that he was trying to disorient her, and she was made fairly dizzy by the little battle dance that he did. Every time he struck out, she started backwards, and avoided being hit by millimetres.
"You're going to have to try harder than that," she goaded playfully, and took a small leap of faith. A paw came up, claws carefully stowed away, and smacked against his cheek. It was more gentle than perhaps it should have been.
But Ain liked him too much to use any real force.

Iroh was getting winded from all the laughing as well, and the bouncing. But he didn't mind in the slightest, and switched his breathing to allow for his lungs to endure. It was a simple tactic for him, though it had been one that required some practice to really understand.
Not that he was really thinking about it.
When her paw hit his face he was almost surprised, not seeing it coming, as distracted as he was by his own playful movements. He could tell she hadn't hit him full force, though, and he toppled sideways. His big body kicked up a lot of sand and dust as he landed, his side heaving. He didn't move, eyes shut a bit too tight to be believable.
He waited, knowing he wasn't really going to surprise her, then got to his feet and lunged at her anyway.
"Rawr!" he yelled, tackling her full on, like a giant pillow, filled with something substantial of course. At least the sand was soft.

Ain could not help but giggle, when Iroh toppled sideways. She peered through the dust and the dirt, sapphire eyes glinting with mirth, and prodded him gently with a paw. It was very clear to her that he was not, in fact, dead, and she thought him a little silly for pretending to be so.
Wonderfully silly.
"Come on," there was a teasing lilt to her voice, "get up, you big- AH!"
A moment's surprise flashed across her pretty face, but was replaced almost at once by comprehension, when he leapt off the ground. She had been prepared for something, and cried out when he tackled her. It was a playful sound.
"You caught me!" Ain cried, feigning fright, and turned so that she could swipe half-heartedly at his shoulder with her paw.

Iroh laughed as she swatted at him, turning his head to catch her paw in his mouth. He didn't bite her, just holding her in his mouth and feigning to chew a bit. He grinned at her, though it was difficult to see with her paw in his mouth, just sitting on top of her.
It wasn't difficult to keep her pinned, considering how much of him there was, even under all the fluffy white fur.
"Do you surrender?" he asked, though the words were sufficiently mumbled because he had not yet let go of her paw, and didn't seem like he was inclined to do so even though he was striking up conversation. He shifted to lay down a bit more, though it was awkward with his hold on her and the fact that he was mostly on top of her.
But that was the point.
He chuckled, finally letting go of her paw and looking at her with a playful expression. It wasn't the most intense duel he had ever had, but then again, they didn't have to be.

It did not hurt when he took her paw with his teeth, and Ain laughed at him again as he pretended to chew at it. If he were anybody else, she might have been a little apprehensive about… well, everything. He was sitting so close, and her paw was so vulnerable between those jaws. Should he choose, Ain knew, he could have crippled her beyond repair with one quick twist of his neck. But Iroh was kind. He had been nothing but good to her, and she trusted him.
"I never surrender," she returned playfully, shifting onto her side, and nipped at one of his forelegs in a harmless sort of way.
Stuck as she was, mostly pinned between his giant furry body and the desert sand, Ain felt strangely comfortable. It occurred to her that it would so very, terribly easy to fall in love with Iroh. And then she laughed again. This time? At herself for being so silly.
They barely knew each other.
But her heart had always been as defenseless as it was passionate.

Iroh imagined the 'duel' was over, and the winner, if there was one, didn't matter. He looked down at her and smiled fondly, rolling off of her if only to let her rest beside him rather than under all his fluff and bulk.
He chuckled and put his head down on her shoulder, sighing contentedly. It was nap time now, perhaps, unspoken and unbidden. But he felt very at peace, comfortable, with her in his company.
Closing his eyes, he rumbled a soft purr. It was a strange sound, halting sometimes, pausing though he didn't seem to notice. His purr had always sounded like that. He easily fell to sleep with his head on her, resting against her comfortably, though he hadn't put any thoughts or words to it. He just accepted the feelings for what they were, and enjoyed them.
That was the most important thing. If one didn't give new things a chance, how would they know what was good for them? What was right or wrong? Learn by doing seemed as good a philosophy as any, and Iroh was not one to turn away from a new experience, be it the spark of love or something else. He liked it, and wanted to learn more about it.
END!
