Ok, now I know that we have talked about negative effects from magical use such as corruption. However I'm feeling that we should start to work out some basics for this, as this is sort of a general effect of magical use. I also want to work this out as it has to do with ideas I have for Trolls, and I have another idea related to magic that needs to have this cleared up for a clear basis. Personally I like the idea that all forms of magic have a sort of corruption to them, even divine magic. That no matter what sort of magic you are using, you are being affected by it, and changed to be more like it. So say you use Divine magic, channeling the power of a god, by doing so you are becoming more like that god. Physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, though not very fast, its not like you will become that god if you use its power enough. Though likely in the case of Divine magic, that would be part of the reason to use it. I also think though that with divine magic it might be possible that the gods are partially affected by who they lend their power to, which might be part of the processes of how a god would chose who to lend their power to. However, before I start postulating on Divine magic, I'd like to lay out an actual idea, related in this case to elemental magic. Now before it was stated Feign Child Those who become too attuned with a single elemental plane take on strange features of said plane which makes living on the Material plane both painful and are shunned throughout most societies as they know such a person is power hungry and often times too aligned with another plane to be trusted. If a user continues to dabble in magic of said plane they have a real possibility of having to find a way to enter the other plane to simply survive. Now I personally think that it shouldn't really be restricted to the use of a single element, I think that even the use of multiple elements should have such an effect as well, though likely less destructive. I think that even if a person uses both water, and fire, they should take on some traits of each, and a sort of combined effect, not steam, but more like an acidic state or something. OK yea I can't keep writing here, my creativity has reached its limit. I'll try to flesh out what I would like to explain as my idea.

I'm not too sure that being attuned to certain elements should bring on a negative effect, but I do believe that certain magics may become overwhelming depending on its source. For instance, if divine magic is corrupting, then, if anything, the person using the magic may become more like the god, but on a different level. If used too much, they may become an extremist. For instance, those of the islamic faith. Not all Muslims in the Middle East shoot people down, jack planes, and things of that nature. Most of those people are actually good, they're just different. Those who do such crazy things are the extremist; people who take it to an extreme climax.
If a person was to use the divine magic of a god that deals with light or maybe some kind of goodness, the person who uses the magic may turn more...pious. But, if it is used to often, too much, and too powerfully, they may become corrupt in the original intentions they had. Instead of being Neutral Good or Lawfully Good like the god, they will become Chaotic Good and kill those who they see as going against the god's wishes.
It can also be seen like the DeathNote. When Light first got the deathnote, he wished to use it for good, but he soon became power hungry, and went from Neutral Good to Chaotic Good and started killing all that got in his way for it went against the vision that he thought would make the world perfect or happy.
Not all magics should have negative effects, but some should exist depending on the source and nature of it.

I like the idea of having some kind of price for all types of magic...well all things that aren't natural to the mortal races. The immaterial magic counts as being natural but we have yet to decide what exactly the immaterial magic does for mortals or if it is for the Gods...
I like that Divine magic influences mortals whether we decide it to make them more like the god or more single minded in way of the god. I think that elemental magic could work with more than one element if they use more than one, but it takes enough of an investment to learn to channel one element yet alone understanding how to channel more than one, but I think it would be pretty cool...So I'm thinking we should come up with general ideas for what would happen with each of the elementals and the divine magic and see if we can come up with any other magics with ideas of the price mortals pay to use it....then we should work on making a write up for dm's or gm's which I can do if we can come up with more stuff....
So what traits come from the use of each of the eight elementals, what effects from each of the eight known Elder Gods [also meaning we should define those gods more], if there is magic mortals are able to access from the ninth god if we want that to play a role in the world....and then any other forms of magic we can think of that might have an actual definition and source or if we actually have magic in the form of other games that we know that is natural to the mortal races...

If we're going to define who the Gods are in attitude, then we must finish how the elementals are. And if we are to do that, then we best as well finish the description of the elements themselves. Once we do that, then the usual, or dominant, personality traits of the gods should come to life.
One more thing, I think this, the description of the gods and such, should go into a different thread to decrease clutter in here. That and, since I want to go against the usual, make Nair a female. I'm just saying. Screw Zeus. Cut off the ball and chain, rip out the beard, put an ax cut to the crotch, throw some Ds on that *BEEP*, and get her set up on the podium.
In case you didn't know, I referenced a song with the "Throw some Ds on that *BEEP*." The guy was referring to a report card. LOL! He had Fs.
I believe that messing with elemental magic would make your more aligned with that element. You know, like if you dabble in Fire, you became more fiesty or passionate. Of course, there are, or should, be two sides to every element. For example. The person could be passionate as in love, or they could be passionate as in the destruction of things or be like a giant meathead that break things for no reason. That's the Light and Dark going on there. Get it?
Not only this, but I'm going to say it now. I think we may want to tweak who allied with who. Not necessarily saying that it shouldn't be the way it is, but I just realized something. Earth, in a way, uses its "head" while Fire uses its "heart". Eh. Either way. It's still cool. I'm thinking of Magic the gathering.
