There seemed to be something decidedly different about the atmosphere within Twilight Designs whenever Nephrite was around – best described, perhaps, as a woman’s touch. There was a simple, yet elegant flower arrangement with orchids set upon the counter (paid for from her own allowance), and the fresh scent of lemongrass filled the air, spread by the incense stick she’d lit not too long ago.

Currently she busied herself polishing some new pieces of jewelry which were to be put on display, occasionally trying out one or another in front of the mirror while quietly humming to herself. Maybe she’d be allowed to bring her little stereo next time, she hoped, to play some of the relaxing music she liked so much.

Every now and then, though, she would pause to stare at the door and sigh heavily, her shoulders sagging, wondering just when her guardian would be back. She wanted to be with Amon so badly, and she didn’t quite see just why he had to leave her with Athan all the time when he had to go to work.

Demare quietly opened the door, motioning for Chrys to come inside before stepping in himself, pulling down his black scarf with his free hand before shutting the door behind himself. His wings shivered against his back from the cold, twitching from the warm air, and the halfling took in a nice deep breath... before coughly lightly due to the unexpected smell. Clearing his throat, he glanced around the room for a moment, finally noticing that someone was actually there.

"Oh," he couldn't help but say, his bi-colored eyes looking over the well-dressed fiend by the counter. "It's been a while since I've seen anyone here on my shift."

Chrys' arms were wrapped tightly around his chest, a smeared toothy grin/frown on his face (seemingly from being unable to decide which would be best to go along with his new... "look"). His head was wrapped in a red scarf, partially to hide the mess that was his "new" hairdo, his long ears tucked inside to hide the healing tears. He shivered a little, his eyes frantically looking around, as if he were checking to make sure the coast was clear.

He stopped and stiffened as he spotted the fiend, a little confused. No one had ever been here before... In fact, he hadn't seen another fiend since Opal, and even then it wasn't in an actual form yet. Slowly, he moved himself behind Demare, trying to think quickly what to do with this new information. He hadn't met this one! This one was new! This was... THIS WAS...

...a perfect opportunity to make a brand new impression.

"Oi..." the teen grumbled, removing his scarf and hanging it up on the coat rack nearby. "I don't buy that shy crap. Sorry, it's been a really long time since either of us has seen another... erm... Another one like you. My name is Demare, and this little bugger is Chrys."

Chrys merely wiggled his fingers at the other, nodding excitedly. "Chrysssss..."

Nephrite perked up with a hopeful look upon her face as soon as the door opened, even though she knew it couldn’t possibly be her guardian yet. Still, that didn’t keep her from hoping, even though he had barely left an hour ago and she knew him to be nowhere near. It was just … a person. She sunk back behind the counter, sighing miserably.

But … hey! There was another … another … another fiend with that person!

One about her ‘age’, no less, not a wisp (which were adorable but a little boring as they didn't talk), or all grown up like Mystic and Hawk.

The earrings she’d been trying on moments ago were uninteresting now, so she simply tossed them over her shoulder as she floated to greet the newcomers, the long sleeves of her silken robes fluttering like a butterfly’s wings.

‘Hello~!’ She chirped, sort of elegantly curtsying mid-air while at the same time craning her neck to get a better look at the hiding Chrys (which made her impression seem considerably less elegant). Her ‘tail’ twirled and swished in a figure of eight, like almost always when she was practically dying of curiosity. It was shimmering as if it was made of silk itself, and in fact repeating the pattern of her innermost robes – looking more like an extension of her gown rather than a tail.

‘I’m Neph,’ she introduced herself, waving at the seemingly shy fiend. It was green, like herself, and it had a face! She realized it was painted on, and in the back of her mind she promptly made plans to pilfer the dressing table of Amon’s neighbor not only for perfumes, but for makeup items as well the next time she snuck into her apartment …

Demare's right eye twitched slightly as the other green fiend tossed the earring aside, but kept his composure. The store wasn't a mess, so at least this one was better than Chrys was about being somewhere they didn't live.

"It's nice to meet you, Neph," the halfling smiled, grabbing Chrys from behind and shoving him back in front of his legs. "Look, Chrys, isn't her robe... pretty?"

Chrys curled up a little in the air as he was shoved forward, making a "face" with his eyes, scrunching them up a little in dislike. He lulled them open again as Demare mentioned the clothing, his arms loosening up a bit as he leaned forward a bit to get a closer look at Neph's garb, not thinking much of it as he got closer to her chest.

So... PRETTY. The little fiend could feel his heart flutter a little from excitement, and it took a lot of willpower to hold it in. That purple and gold and red and blue... It was so PERFECT against that brilliant green "skin". He cocked his head upward, raising an eyebrow at the ornament in her hair. Shiney... so shiney shiney shiney and her hair was done up so pretty and nice and so much better than anything he'd ever seen!

Chrys was about to lift a hand toward the clothing to touch it, but almost immediately grasped his wrist, pulling it down to his side. NO... No touchy, it would be BAD. Might... hurt.

Demare was a little reluctant, but decided to give it a shot.

"Why don't you two play out here for a bit? I need to check on stuff in the back, see what kind of work there is today," he said, slowly stepping toward the counter. He picked up the earrings along the way. "I'll just... be back here if you guys need anything."

Chrys brushed off his torn up jacket a bit, then scratched at his head near a lump under the scarf. Different... Different... Needed to be different...

"Where you find that?" he asked, pointing toward his head. "You princess thing?"

‘Do you like it?’ Nephrite twirled mid-air, so that her gown could be properly admired from all sides. Curiously enough, her tail sported the same intricate pattern as her innermost robe, looking almost as if it was part of her outfit.

Neph was definitely enjoying the attention she got, so she reached to carefully pull what looked like a little golden tiara at first glance from her hair. Holding her bun in place with her other hand, she offered the ornament for Chrys to see. ‘It’s a comb, see? Not a crown. I was a princess for Halloween, though?’

Her delicate brows furrowed a little as she tried to remember just where she’d gotten the golden comb from, but to no avail. It just … sort of had always been there. ‘I always had it?’

Chrys' tail curled up from excitement. It was totally unfair that she had all of this pretty on her! He wanted pretties too. ...Oh, did he? Trying to be different was so haaaard!

"I likes is... I no have stuff forever," he finally stated with a nod of approval. His eye brows lifted with curiosity. "What... Halloween... thing? Why you princess only that?"

Was there something fun he didn't know about? Demare better not be hiding fun stuff from him. Silly human person.

No have stuff forever? Huh? Nephrite frowned a little, it was so hard to understand what Chrys meant to say! But finally it clicked – he hadn’t come with stuff when he’d grown like she had! Which made her wish she had something on herself to give him, especially as all his stuff seemed broken and torn. Wasn’t his soul-bond buying anything for him?

‘Halloween is …You dress up, and then you go to people, and they give you sweets, or you play a prank on them. But I wasn’t allowed to go,’ she added. Not that she could have eaten the sweets anyway, but they still looked nice in their colorful wrappings. ‘Most dress up scary, but I liked being a princess better. Amon was a pirate.’

She laid a finger against the part of her face where her mouth would have been, thinking. ‘Annnd, people make pumpkins with scary faces and put candles inside. And go to parties. We went to the Haunted House and met Reyna and Hawk and Mystic there, and they gave us candy. And then we went to a party too.’ The party had been almost all grown-ups and thus very boring, but she’d loved admiring the pretty dresses and jewelry some of the ladies had worn, especially those dressed up as fairies, or – like herself – princesses.

‘Why are all your things broken?’ She lowered her mental voice to sort of a whisper as she inquired, unable to let go of the other fiend’s ragged appearance. ‘Is Demare not nice to you?’

Chrys quirked an eyebrow at the question. Was Demare not... nice?? ....Oh yes, this would be fu-- NO. He would NOT bring himself to lying about his bonded life. How could he even IMAGINE... THINK of doing such a thing?

But, then again, explaining that he did it himself wouldn't exactly help, either. In fact, it might scare the poor thing. Girl. ....Pretty... green... girl.

"N-no, not like that. Me... uh..." he stammered, trying to think of how to explain things. Chrys started scratching at his horn roughly, his head starting to itch. "Um..."

Riiiiiiip. His clawed little fingers tore through the already worn red material.

"....Oopsie."

Quickly, the little fiend unwrapped his head and began to examine the scarf, a worried look taking over his face. This only revealed his broken horn, and very messy (and patchy) hair, that he'd tried to cut/style this morning. If anything didn't think he was crazy before, this certainly would have done the trick.

This wasn't good. Demare only loaned him the scarf, and it was Mayu's. They were both going to KILL him. He shook it a little it, as if the tear would magically disappear. Frantically, his eyes bolted around the shop. Tape... He needed tape. Yes, tape would fix it. It fixed EVERYTHING.

"Fix... need to fix it!!"

Nephrite’s gray eyes widened slightly when she heard the scarf tear, and, for a moment there, she wondered just how Chrys had done this – she hadn’t quite noticed the other fiend’s sharp claws yet. After all, she herself didn’t have any, nor did she know anyone who had.

Her eyes grew even wider as she caught glimpse of the broken horn, and the messed up hair. It wasn’t just Chrys’ things that were broken, she realized, it was the whole him. He had to be even more of a klutz than she was, she figured, or maybe he had some reeeeally bad luck …

Her line of thoughts trailed off when she noticed just how upset Chrys seemed to be about his mishap. To her, breaking things happened – mostly because she wasn’t very good at phasing objects with her, which had lead to some spectacularly smashed perfume flasks for example – but it wasn’t anything bad. Her guardian would be grumpy and scold her, and then whip out that fantastic magical plastic card and pay for replacements.

But Crys … She reached out to touch him lightly upon the forearm, and – had she been capable of breathing – she’d have drawn in a surprised hiss as she sensed just how frantic and distressed he was about the torn scarf.

‘Shhhh …’ She acted without thinking, drawing Chrys into her embrace just like she did with her guardian whenever he woke up from a particularly bad nightmare. Her skin felt soft and smooth where it touched against Chrys’, just like the silken fabrics of her gown.

‘It’s going to be fine,’ she murmured soothingly, gently patting the other fiend’s back. ‘You didn’t do it on purpose, right?’ One with one hand she nuzzled Chrys’ hair at the back of his neck before she moved back a little to get somewhat of a better look at him. All messed up as he looked she felt a really strong urge to fix things about him – like, to cut all his hair short to the same length at the very least? – but it was hard to decide where to start even.

‘What happened to your hair?’ she asked, as much out of curiosity as much as to distract the other fiend from his woes. If you were upset, your guardians just magically knew you’d just messed up something, somehow. It always was like that. ‘And your horn?’ she added. She couldn’t really think of a way to fix that, except, perhaps, with polyclay?

She moved back a little more, releasing Chrys from her embrace. ‘Can you give me the scarf?’ She asked, heedless of the fact she might be overwhelming the poor, distraught fiend with too many questions at once. But she had somewhat of an idea here … She tugged slightly at the red fabric, already compiling a list of things she’d need in the back of her head.

As Neph embraced him, Chrys stiffened, and it took all of his concentration not to dissipate into the air right at that moment. His eyes were wide, his mind was (for the most part) blank, and if he had been capable of it, his whole face probably would have turned red. No one other than Demare, with the exception of maybe one or two people, had ever touched him before. At least, of their own will, and not due to him poking and prodding at things. She was soft, her clothes were soft, and she didn't feel... She felt so... It was nothing like human flesh.

Wait. And she wasn't hurting. He didn't burn her, or destroy her clothing, or cause harm at all as she backed away from him. At first, it didn't occur to the little fiend that the other was talking, his face turning emotional for a second. It was possible. It was actually REALLY possible for him not to be just completely and utterly destructive like he'd feared.

Shaking his head a little bit, Neph's words finally reached his thoughts. "Hair... O-oh... ummmmm..." he stammered, furrowing his brow as he thought. How to explain... Was there even a way to describe himself without sounding totally crazy?

... No, probably not.

The scarf easily slipped out of his fingers as she tugged on it, and his focus immediately went back to the problem at hand. "Ah! N-not mine! Borrow to hide... S-she'll be angry!!" he whined, moving his hands over where his mouth would have been. "She no like me much anyway, but not need more reasons..."

Chrys looked at Neph a bit hopefully. His eyes were wide as saucers, even his lower ones rounding out a little. "Can fix??"

Ah. So he’d borrowed it without asking. Neph didn’t mind, especially as her concept of ‘property’ was a little warped anyway. What she liked, she took, leaving it to her grumbling guardian to pay up for it or make amends to people who wanted their stuff back.

‘Can’t really fix,’ she confessed ruefully. ‘Only a little.’

She zipped off with the scarf behind the counter, rummaging through the drawers there. What looked useful, she placed on the counter top, what didn’t … she didn’t really care where it ended up once she tossed it over her shoulder. Nephrite was incredibly tidy and organized, almost verging on OCD at times, but only when it came to her own stuff.

The stapler looked good, and – oh, there were the safety pins, those were useful. But where was …? Ah. Finally the young fiend found what she’d been looking for with so much perseverance, one of those small sewing kits that were around in almost every household. Actually, the safety pins would do the trick, but she was in a mood to show off.

Her stitches were quite crude, as Nephrite didn’t have much practice in sewing yet. That, and naturally she didn’t put as much effort into this as she would have if the scarf was one of her own. That she knew how to do it at all was mostly thanks to Amon tending to be quite merciless whenever she ended up breaking or tearing her things, simply telling her “go fix it yourself” instead of giving in to her whining.

To make things perfect, she pinned a little brooch she’d found while looking for stuff onto the scarf. She had no idea where it came from … Maybe a customer had lost it some time, or it had come as a free sample with one of the deliveries, or perhaps someone had left it in the store for repairs … Honestly, she didn’t care. It had been way, way in the back of the drawer, so no one was going to miss it.

‘There,’ she said, proudly presenting her handiwork to Chrys. ‘See, you just give her back the scarf, and she gets an extra shiny with it too, so she wont be mad.’ Nephrite nodded to herself, quite taken with her own cleverness. Then she began eying Chrys’ hair again. Maybe … Maybe she could at least cut it all to the same length? That way it wouldn’t look quite as messy …
