User ImageIt was the middle of summer however the cold chill of the mountain still remained. Up this high there was no real warmth or plant life, just frost and bare rocks that seemed to be endless, stretching beyond sight into olivion. It was the only world she had ever known and that is what made her see such a lifeless place as a warm and loving home. Arella’s perception of beauty was different from most, the more monstrous the environment or creature the more at peace she felt around them. She did not see the beauty in flowers; she just saw them as fragile little plants which came in and out of existence so rabidly if you blinked you could miss them. If one was going to show her affection do not bring flowers that wither and die, bring her something that will last as long as the love you where trying to show like gentle words of affection; a vow which would never fade and remain long after bones have turned into dust and names disappeared into history.

Pale blues eyes observed the grey hues that enclosed the land. She felt so out of place, like she did not fit in. This world she had come to love was so different to her, she sometimes felt like the ugly duckling simply because she did not match what she viewed as beautiful. Yet she had always been too afraid to talk to her dark guardian about her feelings. What if he also viewed her in such a light? She shook her head. She could not think that! She snorted and flicked her long flowing hair, conflicted emotions running through her head. She needed to know for sure and she knew she was not going to understand unless she asked him.

After all he is all she knew, her whole being had revolved around Oberon so she had no one else to turn to for advice. He was a father, a best friend, a guardian and a brother all in one. However she still wished he could be more. She wondered down the barren passages back to the cave they called home, looking around before wondering into the darkness. Most would be scared to disappear into the inky blackness to see the monstrous beast which roamed in it. However to her this was home sweet home and he was a friendly face.

“Obby? Can I ask you a question? You need to promise to tell me the truth though.”

User Image Oberon was pacing, he usually did that whenever Arella left for a walk. He knew she never went far -he had followed her to begin with and even to this day would check her scent trail once she was alseep to ensure she had not met anyone else on the way- but still he worried. Worried that one day she would wake and see him as a monster, wake and decide to leave him.... or worst of all, find someone on one of her walks and simply run off. Yes, the idea of losing her was enough to break the fragile sliver of the heart that remained.

He looked down at the lantern hanging around his neck, both a curse and a gift, it hung eternally as a reminder of the blood and destruction he had brought to Arella's family but then it also screamed sanctuary around Arella, for with her mothers dying breath she had given them both a lantern, his allowing him to do her no harm as long as she donned her own. He had told her they where simply to light their way in the dark cave that was their home... another lie, another shame.... but he really did just want to protect her, love her, hold her, care for her....!

He heard a noise, his pacing instantly stopped as he watched the cave entrance, but his body noticably relaxed when the familar scent of Arella greeted his sences.

Eager as ever around her he walked to greet her, possessively nuzzling her neck. In many ways he suspected that she considered it an affectionate action when in reality the main reason for doing so was so his scent was inbedded in her pelt. A living warning to all those who may come into his territory that she was taken... owned by a beast.

Her question threw him a little, he had noticed lately she had become curious about everything. He wondered what that meant, but pushed his fear aside as he spoke. His voice its usual low grumbly growl, "You may ask. I will tell you the truth." If I can, he never used the word promise unless he knew he could keep it, like he promised he would protect her... he would! With his life if needed, taking the threat with him of course. He would even promise to provide for her, he had been doing so since she had been a basket.... but promise not to lie? He had been lying for so long that he wasn't sure he had it in him not to.

Arella giggled slightly as he nuzzled her neck. It always ticked her, she was crazy ticklish. Once when she was a foal she ran into some tall grass and fell to the floor in tears of laughter at the feeling of the plantation against her belly. Of cause hearing this Obby had run over like a speeding bullet to see she was okay, just to see all the fuss was over nothing. He always seemed to be like that, even when she made a noise in her sleep he was always up, awake and looking down at her just to check. She did see it as a sign of affection and she lived for it, sometimes she found herself going out for the soul reason to come back and have him make a fuss over her. Even though she was far from the smartest mare she knew Obby and how to get what she wanted out of him slyly, unless he knew she was doing it.

She looked up at him and cocked her head to one side, the soft blue glow highlighting her features in the dark cave. “Well, I was just wondering why we were so different you and I. To our wings, to your horns, to our pelts and skins, we have no similarities at all besides our lanterns. I was just wondering about it – I mean why do I have to look like this? I would much prefer to look like you. I just wanted to know if I was normal, or if the way I am makes me... obscene.” She asked, it was the most polite way she could put it without coming straight out with her worries she was some kind of monster. I mean he was so protective of her, maybe it was because if the world saw her they would be out to get her. She wanted to be like him, she admired him more than anything. Maybe if she did he would look at her the way she looked at him.

She looked to the side slightly, her eyes looking up on his giant frame. Maybe she was some kind of a dwarf? I mean he towered her. Oh no. That was it wasn’t it. She was too small for him; she still seemed like a child in his eyes. At this point she was oblivious to the fact that most mares would look like a dwarf in comparison to him. She shook her head lightly and wondered over to her bed, lying down at the very back of the cave, a place where only the light from their necklaces shone. Her eyes kept looking on in his direction as she waited his answer.

She was nervous for the reply. What if he said what she feared? She felt like she would be simply heartbroken.

Oberon was taken back by her question, she was worried, he could tell it. It was almost like her scent would shift ever so slightly... warning signals went off. Why was she suddenly worried about appearances? Has she met someone today? His mind began racing with a thousand questions and ideas and rage so red began to flow over his eyes, it was a good job that the lanterns prevented him from harming her... he did not wish her harm.

As his mind was stumbling and desperatly attempting to come up with an answer and a reason for her sudden curiousity he watched her walk away. SHE WALKED AWAY!! Rage again. More rage than he had felt in a while, true he had never seen her walking further into their home as he walking away before but he wasn't thinking straight.

Then he turned he met her eyes, they where so sad and serious that it snapped him out of his anger and made him ashamed for ever considering her betraying him or causing him harm. No, she was a creature too pure and innocent for such games, he had protected her from such corruption.... from everything but himself. What would this angelic beauty ever do if she knew the truth? If she knew what he had done and that now his heart only beat for her. Her alone.

He walked towards her, unable to resist asking the one question that was surrounding him and consuming his very throughts. "What has brought this on Arella?" He tried to make his voice softer, less threatening.... though he was thankful that Arella had never considered him such a thing.

He wanted to be honest with her, but still knew not what to say to comfort her. He sat beside her bed and simply watched her for several moments before taking a deep breath and closing his eyes. He would never have closed them around anyone else, but he knew this creature was too innocent to want to cause him harm.... no.... he was safe with her, it was she who was constantly in trouble.

Finally he opened his eyes and looked at her, her own sadness most likely echoed with his own. He would answer her..... "Arella, my dear, you are beautiful just the way you are. I would never change a thing about you." .....but still he could not bring himself to tell her the truth, that they where different because she was an angel and he was a monster.

Arella looked at him and then down slightly. She did not know what to say to him, what could she say? Even though he never had before she felt like he would laugh at her or maybe stray away at the awkward rift that the truthful answer could create between them. “Well...”She began looking up at him once more. She needed to think on her toes or dodge the question. No answers came to her head, she could never lie to him, and he would be able to tell if she did anyway. “I... just wanted to know how you saw me Obby. I was scared I was some kind of monster or something.” Her view on the situation was warped, she had always seen him as a guardian angel and no one would ever change that view. Some may call him tainted and evil, however she could never think of him in that way.

She smiled as he answered her question. Soon she was out of bed and darting up towards him, almost running straight into him with her eagerness to be near. Personal space was out the window. “Really? You are not just saying that? Well I would change a few things, maybe a few inches on my legs so I was not so small, A few more inches on my hair.” She began to ramble on in a very bubbly high school way. She then stopped quite suddenly to look at him once more. “I think the same about you... your... very shiny!” That was the word, no that was not the word but it was the one that came out so it had to make do. She gave a nervous chuckle before shaking her head, kicking herself on the inside for not thinking about what she was saying.

“I- mean you are very pretty.” FOR THE LOVE OF!... SHE DID IT AGAIN! Handsome, Handsome, it was not hard women get your act together! She gave yet another nervous chuckle, he would get it – she hoped at least. She smiled and looked up at him with soft eyes. Why could she not be like him? He was so brave and strong it seemed like he could take on anything and come out unharmed. If he wanted to say something to her he would be able to say it.

Wait... maybe that meant he did not have anything to tell her.

Oberon was saddened by her answer, how could she ever see herself as a monster? This ethereal creature of youth and beauty? Yet even though she stood beside him, a true monster born of nightmares and horror she saw herself as a monster. Did the difference in their appearance really affect her so much?

Guilt, that was what he was feeling, guilt for never teaching her how wonderful she was, telling how much of an angel she really was. The problem was the Oberon knew very little about Angeni, he had never known one long enough with the rage to talk and ask questions. Only Arella. Only ever Arella.

"Never." Was all he said on the subject, she could never be a monster, could never harm another creature, could never be like him. She was too innocent to be evil. Too innocent for him.

As she moved towards him his spirits lifted, he embraced her, this time more for affection than because he wished for her to wear his scent. Yet when she spoke of changing herself he felt his anger bubble, did she not understand that she was perfect? That she needed to change nothing. In a growl he spoke one word, he dared not permitted himself more. "No," He nipped her hair, trying to ground himself back to Earth, back to her. She was in many ways an anchor for his control. Feeling more in control again now he elaborated on his order. "Do not change Arella. You do not need to be taller or have longer or shorter hair, you do not need more markings or a darker pelt, you do not need to change.... do you understand me Arella?" No, he would not see her tainted in such a way. Never, she was his!

Shiny? Pretty? Simple words and spoken easily but they still meant more to Oberon that he could decribe. "Thank you" he said before turning his head away from her, he was not very good at all this emotional stuff. Arella was the only reason why he was even attempting it, usually he would have just removed the head of the one trying to evoke such a thing and be done with it. Yet, he could no more harm Arella and then he could stop himself loving her.

Love? Was it really that?

Arella looked on at the way he reacted, blunt as always. She smiled and nodded her head. “Okay Obby, I won’t change.” She promised before he looked at the creature that was illuminated by his own red glow. There was a somewhat awkward silence for a moment or two and then she just bobbed her head to some rhythm which was in her head and she wondered around him in a playful manor before coming full circle and looking up at him with innocent eyes. “You cannot change either then; I like you just the way you are!” She exclaimed with a small giggle and a faint blush appearing around her rosy cheeks.

She lifted up her nose and ran it under his chin; much like someone would stroke a cat before she rested her head against his fluffy chest. “Obby, before I was here what did you do? Have you ever had any other family besides me, any other children? A Mother and Father? Maybe even a lover? We have never talked much about your life before me – you know everything about me, from the day I came into this world you where watching. I want to know you just as well. I want to be... closer to you.” She stated, her words becoming a murmur the longer the sentence went on.

She wanted to be closer to him, she wanted to know everything; to the point where she felt like the two of them where the same being. That is what a soul mate is? Is it not? She was more interested in knowing if Obby had ever had a girlfriend – if he did Arella could imagine her being very beautiful. Darkly beautiful like Obby was which to her was the only meaning of the word. I mean he did go down into the mains lands a lot and left here hear, what if he did have a women waiting for him? No! She would not let that happen. She closed her eyes and buried her head closer into his pelt. She could hear his heartbeat and feel the heat radiating from him; it was so warm and comforting. A satisfied smile came to her lips wishing time would stop ticking if not only for a little while.

“I always feel at my best when I am here with you. We will always be together wont we Obby? Just the two of us?”

"Agreed," Oberon said as little Arella requested her never change, the truth was he wasn't sure he could have even if he wanted to. In many ways he wanted to be better for her, he wanted to be the right kind of man for her... but he knew he never could be.

Her next set of her questions made him freeze, he could feel her warm breeth licking his neck as she snuggled herself in. He liked that she had never really feared him, always treated him with respect and gradtitude.... much more than he deserved, sometimes he wondered if it was a side effect of the lantern. Oberon knew that his could prevent him from harming her, even in a rage while hers was a mystery to him. What if it drew her closer to him? What would he do or feel if he knew she was simply acting due to magic and not because she actually cared for him. Oberon may only have a sliver of heart left but he feared it would snap forever if that was the case.

Deciding to answer some of her questions as best as he could, hoping that by some small chance that it may warm her to him more. "No family, no children, I do not remember my parents nor would I want to." If Oberon's tendencies where anything to go by then surely the parents he was spawned from would be worst than him? Or was that the reason they removed him from their life.... because he was darkness made flesh and they were innocent? No, he could not believed that a creature so innoncent... a creature like Arella, could ever produce a beast like him.

Yet, the fact that his innocent little Angeni was curious about him, about his past affairs and lovers had him wondering.... why?

Why now? Why suddenly after years of simply accepting his word as law, of doing as he commanded without question was she this interested in the way of things? Part of him wondered again if was indeed because she had met someone, yet she had not smelt like another which simply meant that they had not touched. Unable to resist he asked; "How long have you felt like this Arella?"

Trying to lesson his questions impact he added, "How close do you want to get Arella? I.... I...." He stutted, something he never did, not around Arella. Yet now, so full of unknown feelings he found himself unable to express himself. He forced himself to spit it out, he would not allow her to see weakness in him, no, he was her protector he needed to be stronger than anyone else.... he needed to see her as the strongest man alive.

"I am not a creature of the light like you Arella, I have done things I am not proud of. What would you do then? If I told you something you did not want to truely hear?" He moved his head slightly so he could see her, turning his body so it was beside hers now as he folded two of his four wings over her delicate figure. No, he did not want to see scorn or disappointment in those delicate innocent features of his.

When she spoke, with such hope and longing it made a smile -rare as they where for him- to his lips, he spoke with as much truth as he could muster, "If that is what you want Arella, then yes it will always be this way. You and I until the end of time. You are mine," He was a possessive creature, it was his nature he couldn't help it. "I will not let you go easily Arella."

That was something they had in common. She always knew that he was never her birth father and she had never asked him about them, I mean there must be a reason why she was not with them and she was never too sure she wanted to know. In addition she thought bringing it up might hurt him, make him feel like he was not enough for her. She heard him talk and she smiled, wondering if it was bad that she was happy about the fact that she was the only one close to him. They were in the same boat now. She was not silly, she knew the age gap between them was quite large and she wondered why such a handsome man never settled down but again he was always too nervous to ask. However you may call it teenage ways but she was starting to come into her own – she wanted to know everything and the feelings that she had multiplied to the point where she did not feel like she could control herself.

A small blush came onto her face as he spoke. “I- I have felt this way since I can remember. Even when I was a foal, I used to imagine growing up and marrying you as stupid as that might sound. Obby, you are everything to me. There is no limit to how close I want to be to you.” She stated, watching him as he came to stand by her side. Her wings flattened to her body to allow him to wrap his around her with more ease. She was the only thing she had ever known, the only thing she had ever connected with so she could not imagine life without him; he filled a huge part of her heart – one that on a normal person would usually consist of many beings. To her she had Obby and that was all she ever thought she would want and need.

“Obby, I will never see you in that light. I do not think I can. I love you and... It does not matter what you have done. I see a light in your heart and you have never shown me anything to see you otherwise. If you are ashamed of things you have done draw a line and let’s move on together.” She stated shaking her head, there was not wanting to hear this, she could not believe he would do anything like that. Her eyes lit up as he spoke, she wanted to be his and the thought of him always been there made her happy, more than he would ever know. “I would like that very much!” She exclaimed giving a small laugh.

That long? He could almost not believed it. When she was growing up he had always acted more like a father figure, or so he had assumed. Yet as she had started to blossum and come into her own she no longer looked like a pup in his eyes, but a beautiful and elegant woman that he wanted to possess, to keep.... he still had never hoped that she would let him.

Wondering what she would really think if he ever told her, told her that he slaughtered her entire family.... and laughed at their pain. Blood, rage, anger... three things that would always be part of his life. He looked down at the little lantern around his neck, it was powerful indeed. Oberon would never have imagined that he could have got this close to an Angeni before, to feel their heart beat below his wing, to feel their heat and acceptance. But Arella was not like most, no she was delicate, innocent, a creature to be protected at all costs.

Yes, Arella was to be protected, even from Oberon himself. He never wanted to risk a rage, risk harming her.... risking her life was not an option to him.

Then what she said clicked.... 'marrying you' she wanted to marry him? Oberon was only able to hide his surprise due to the many years of practising, or tormenting his prey before ending their pathetic exsistance. Yet still, she wanted to marry him? In that moment he wondered if he should tell her the truth of their past, tell her why she ended up in his care rather than the loving embrace of the mother he had slaughtered in cold blood, a mother that had used her dying breath to save her... to save them both.

He remained silent, not finding the words to her ramblings or for her declaration of love. No, he didn't know how to express himself, how to hold her closer to his heart without destroying her. He had heard a saying once, 'If you play with fire you would get burnt, if you play in the darkness you will get consumed.' He was both fire and darkness to her, and he innocences was something to be protected not destroyed.... could he control himself?

Eventually he said one word, "Together", in the future he would tell her more, but today... today was to be enjoyed, savioured and cherished. He could destroy both of their lives another day.

Taking his wing from her, shocked by the sudden loss of her heat and warmth but feeling less deserving of it he walked back towards her bed and sat at the side of it. He had sat here many times in the past, nursing her when she was ill, bringing her food and water when she was too exhausted to go herself.... but today he wanted to return to the days when they would sit and talk -ok, so Oberon mostly listened but he liked it. Liked the closeness of the act. "Sit Arella, tell me about your day." An order or a request? Oberon couldn't tell anymore.

She looked up at him and could see him taking in and processing all the information she had given him. He was very quiet and it was in that she wound a very awkward discomfort. She did not know how he would react to this, after all she had never mentioned anything like it before and it was soon obvious something was holding him back, a wedge between them she could feel. In some strange way she was glad when he wondered away because she could feel in her heart of hearts he was not comfortable with this. A small smile came onto her face as he lay by her bedside. She bounced back to her bed much like a bunny rabbit before landing in it and circling like a cat before settling down; her mane acting a lot like a blanket.

“Today? Well. I went to talk to the squirrels and rabbits to check up on them, and then I went looking for some of those yummy blue flowers you showed me. Then I went to take a bath at the river before I came back here, so nothing unusual.” She smiled some small part of her wanted to go on to say that she also admitted her feelings to the man she loved but not surprisingly left that bit out. She game a small inward chuckle. She knew he was not the most open person in the world, it was just who he was and she was used to it. Even though it was quite frustrating at times she would never change him. He said things when he needed to which made it all so more special.

“How about you? How was your day?” She asked leaning her head towards him some more to look at those eyes he had There was always something that a person fixated on more than anything else and to her it was his eyes, they were so bold and bright – glowing in the darkness. She loved them which caused some awkward moments when she was just stood there looking on at them. She always wondered how he spent his time when he was not around her, she did not know much of the outside world and she was always up to one of his stories. It was just a way of becoming closer to him.

Oberon smiled the best he could given his long canine fangs, he didn't want to come across as dangerous, to Arella he was more like a tamed mountain lion, instinct told him to attack but her control over him made him purr like a kitten.

Sometimes he wondered what she spoke about with the animals, maybe they were easier to talk to than him? Oberon had little concept about awkward silences, to him all silence was golden.... that said he enjoyed listening to Arella. He just needed to keep her talking. "What did the animals have to say?"

He didn't know what to say about her bath, had she simply done it to get clean, or had she done it to remove any scents? Yes, Oberon was probably just being parnoid, but that didn't mean could stop himself, his fear for losing Arella was VERY real, she could have anyone she wanted if she just realised how wonderful she truely was and came to the conclusio that he was corruption personified. He knew he was no good for her, yet he still couldn't bring himself to leave her.

Protect her. It was a thought that roared stronger than any fire in his mind. The lanterns compulsion?

"My day," he repeated as he contemplated his day. He has gone to the town, and hunted for meat and blood, "Collected food," stole her some fresh flowers, he knew she loved roses very much, Oberon liked the way the scent mingled with her own -the perfect compliment, "got you some more roses," and finally he had killed an intrudor -but he would make no mention of that. He would protect this pure creature, even from himself. "Nothing interesting Arella."

“They just updated me on their lives. Some have just had babies and they are so cute! I cannot wait till they grow up a little so I can play with them! I love the spring, it brings children and new friends.” She chuckled nodding her head. She had never met another soquili besides Obby so the forest animals where her dearest friends. She would sometimes spend hours chatting with them and they were always so kind. She has known some since foal hood and now she was larger newer faces did take a while to accept the large creature but where soon reassured by the older generation. They all knew she would never hurt a fly and was always there to help them whenever they needed her. It felt good to be someone that others went to for help and she loved her friends dearly.

“I guess you know all about raising kids; to be able to care for someone. One day I would like to know how it felt to see someone grow. Who knows maybe one day we could stumble across a basket like you stumbled across me. I would love to be a big sister!”
She chuckled and shook her head in a innocent way. She had no clue about the struggles which came with rising young ones. Like most other things she thought it was all flowers and rainbows, yet that was not her fault she had never been able to see what the real world was like so had no reason to mature and grow.

Arella looked at him and smiled. “Really? Thank you!” She exclaimed nuzzling him slightly. She loved Roses; she never truly understood why she felt such a strong bond with them. Maybe from some long lost connection she had whilst she was still in her basket. She faintly remembered a place where they grew. Now she decorated herself with them. He was so sweet when he wanted to be, she felt like he was always thinking of her in some way which he probably was. She nodded along as he explained what he had spent his day doing. Casting a light smile in his direction, that was a lie. He was always interesting in whatever he did. “You are always thinking of me! I can never repay you for all you have done Obby.”
PostPosted: Wed Nov 17, 2010 11:38 am

He nodded along as she spoke, not really interested in her words but liking the sound of the tones and variables as the swayed and lifted in the perfect melody that was her voice. That didn't mean he wasn't listening, being interested and listening where two different things -that said, he was interested in Arella, he had noted every thing that had made her happy since the moment her basket had hatched, and of coursed used it to spoil her. In many ways he knew by instinct that she would love to be in the company of others... but risking it, allowing her to fall into friendship with someone who would have intent to 'save' her. Selfish, Oberon was a selfish creature. If he had had any sence he would have let her go, let her be brought up surrounded by laughter and joy, friendship and others of her kind.... except, Oberon had destroyed her family. Destroyed everything she had been destined to loves.

Then she mentioned a big sister and his heart froze, she had had an older sister..... several siblings in fact, but along with her parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents Oberon had eliminated them without a second thought.... but a basket of white and petals, he had not been able to touch.

He was thankful for that fact, so thankful that his selfishness had allowed him to know such a creature as Arella. "And why would I share you?" Yes, he was guilty -but he had been guilty for this crime for her entire life, still he would not reveal it until it was time. Tonight was not the time. With his question he eyes her, a slight smile upon his lips. Yes.... Oberon was selfish.

As Arella's face lit up at the mention of Roses he wondered if she would be equally happy with the supper he had also managed to 'acquire' on his return for her. Oberon could eat fruit and vegetables like any other soquili but he prefered the taste of flesh and blood. Still, for her he would eat them, and for that reason they never seemed so bad. He had of course tried them when she was not with them and found he did not have the stomach for them.

She was thanking him? If only she knew... what would she say and think then? Forcing the thought out of his mind he instead went for a reply that was as honest as he could muster, "No, Arella. All that I do is to repay you for the sunshine and butterflies you have brought into my life. For that you can never be truely repaid." ....well, maybe if he told her the truth that would be a step in the right direction?
