So I bought one of the playing mats where it's rubber on one side and like felt on the other side. The mat is blank and black in color. I was wondering, from those who have ever done something like this, how I would go about drawing on and coloring it. I was planning to use copic markers. So what would I need to do? Do I need to color it white first? and if so, what can I use to do that?
If anyone has any advice, and of course images of ones they made, It would be very helpful.

I Happen to have a friend that makes them by drawing on them. she most of the time uses white because it shows up better. but on black I'am not quite sure how it will work' If you have a shirt press it might work better.

I know this thread is old and this guild is kind of inactive, but making custom play mats is something I've looked into and have found out how to do.
I already have the technique down to get a design placed on a play mat. Also, the fabric used on the mats is called soft lycra.
