So far being eighteen wasn't any better than being seventeen. In fact, in many ways, it was worse. Audrey had gone from having a devoted boyfriend to having an epic guilt complex about punching him for simply being nervous, while still convinced she was just a bad girlfriend so would not be taking him back. Sure, there was Sorrin to talk to now, but he was a new friend and she didn't really have time for new friends. So there were simply endless hours spent with some part of her tangled with another part of Victoria. Reading, simply curling up together to watch a movie, just stupid things that best friends and cousins did.

So Audrey had gone blonde at Vicky's insistence she needed change, and was walking into the club that had started this whole mess with Elzo because Vicky thought she had to socialize. What her darling cousin probably meant was that she had to rebound, but it wasn't going to happen. Really, she looked like some kind of ethereal thing these days, with her pale hair and pale grey minidress and heels. The stupid bow was there too, but only because it was insisted that it looked super cute and would have boys all over her! Zac's earrings graced her ears, and the two charms were always there. It was simple, but not slutty. However, time passed and after half an hour of waiting for a cousin that didn't seem too keen to show, Audrey was getting bored and muttering.

It was a crappy way to start a trip to one of her favorite places, but thankfully she saw a few kids from her study group out on the floor. Scooting out of her chair with a cute hop, she was in the thick of things, body moving in the way Elzo had taught her would drive boys wild.

Sigh.

Yep. Eighteen sucked.

He hadn't noticed her when she walked in the club. In fact, he almost missed her completely. It wasn't until he saw that fine a** shimmy over to a group of guys that he recognized her. The bow was the give away. No girl wore it in thier hair like she did. No girl who walked like that at least. The walk she would tease him with when she felt he was being overly touchy feely. Watching her from the small booth, Elzo sipped at his drink, hoping he was wrong. She wouldn't dye her hair. She wouldn't be flirting with guys like that. It was when she tossed her hair back and stepped onto the dance floor that Elzo saw her face and his stomach dropped.

Audrey was over him. Audrey had moved on.

The blow hit deep in his chest and it's sting was a cold fire. Was this how his old girlfriends felt when he had rejected them? Was this Karma? Maybe, but watching Audrey start to dance on the dancefloor. He felt longing. In his mind he was saying how pathetic he was to pine over her, how he could sleaze his way into any other girl's bed if he wanted to. What was one girl? There were dozens more.
But none of them were Audrey.
He wanted to talk to her. To just..find out where he went wrong. He had tried so hard to make her happy, but in the end she left him in tears. He'd ******** up somewhere. He had to know. Legs took him onto the floor, as his mind readied himself for confrontation.

Elzo had to know how he'd broken the one heart he so wished to have.

She would, and had, dyed her hair. It had been something she'd been toying with ever since going back to blue from the pink, what she would look like with a more normal hair color. Victoria had gone in the opposite direction, but the look for both of them was still rather incredible. It made her honey eyes look smokier somehow, more like sunshine than the amber honey they'd been before. Not that anyone could see that in the shadowy club unless they got very close. Nobody was getting that close, demonstrated by the fact that the closest any of the group got were arms brushing as bodies rotated.

But there was always someone who had either an inflated opinion of their lady killing skills, or had imbibed far too much of the alcohol sold on the premises. There was a pair that had always hunted together like a pair of mountain hawks. One would make the initial foray, and the second would scoop up the lady in question. They'd remembered Audrey's special gait and her fine a** as well over the weeks, and had been waiting for a time when she was without her guard. Neither of the three had noticed that Elzo Xanis was on the edge of the dance floor, gazing longingly at the girl he loved.

Hands encircled her waist rudely and the girl jumped in her heels, twisting to see who had her. "What the? Oh great, it's you again. Didn't you learn the first time?" There was some sneering, some leering, comments about how she was the sweetest thing in the club. Didn't she want to play? Especially now that she was all alone without that loser kid. One beefy hand started to slide up the back of her dress, going for round cheeks, when she'd had fully enough. They wanted to underestimate her?

Fine.

Angling into the man, a fist rammed shortly but with great power into a tight groin. When the air when out of him, her knee came up into his stomach, and Bro Number One sunk to the floor. Two was nearby to help him up, and she gave him the finger. "When your buddy gets his balls outta his throat, remind him that I'll do it harder next time with points on my knuckles." Curls were tossed back and arms were folded as one or two of her friends looked on in amazement.

Obviously, this whole night was turning into one giant mistake!

He saw them no doubt when they saw her. The two bags of slime with reputations to rival his own. However, Elzo prided himself that his was very much lesser in terms of rudeness, possible lecher, and the idea of alcohol induced rape. Some frat boys never took rejection well, and when they moved in for the one that got away, Elzo was behind them, ready to stop them once more. Audrey may not have been his girlfriend, but he liked to think he would do the same for any potential victim of the duo.

Quickly however, it was apparent that his old flame needed no one to protect her. The defeated drunk falling to the dance floor with an undignified thud. A few people gave a small cheer of approval. The girl was hardcore! Several other guys shot the newly turned blode some interested glaces, after all, it was no fun to go after a gift with no fire to her.
But for Elzo, he wasn't interested in what they were interested in. Audrey could have been wearing a parka while her hair could have been green and he still would cast a longing glance at her.

And now, from just a few feet away, blue eyes gazed at the golden hazel. His mouth felt dry again. It took him a second to find his voice. "I'm glad."
It was awkward as hell, talking in public to the girl you loved who had left you for reasons you didn't understand. "I sometimes forget you don't need me to protect you." s**t that was a bit male of him to say.
"Er." He shuffed his feet. "I...think we should talk."

The cheers had made Audrey's cheeks flush with that light blush that spread down her neck and gave her skin a lovely tint, which drained from her quickly enough to make her head light and knees a bit weak when Elzo's voice reached her ears. Turning, the blonde looked up into those amazing blue eyes and without saying a word, she turned and walked back off the dance floor to the table where she'd been perched.

Sliding into a chair, eyes locked again and she pointed at the vacant one which had been reserved for the absent Victoria Collins. It didn't surprise Audrey that he'd basically followed her anyway. "Sit. We can talk. Sorrin didn't give you my message about Thursday?" It would have been so much easier to do this somewhere that she was in control, somewhere that she could have easily gone and locked the door so that he couldn't see or hear her. It wasn't easy to deny herself something she badly wanted but didn't think she ought to have. Doing so in public would only be harder.

He was her shadow, moving quietly behind her without thought. When they held each others brief glace Elzo felt that painful longing. He loved her, and as hard as he tried he couldn't get over her. Sitting next to her Elzo felt the desire to touch her, hold her, do what had become so natural for him to do. To have it denied...hurt. It hurt far more then he wanted it too. "Sorrin...Sorrin gave me the message. Yeah." Fingers tapped on the table. Uneasiness hung thick around them.
He couldn't take it. It drove him crazy. "What did I do wrong? Where did I ******** up? I just-" He relaxed, realizing he was getting tense. "When did I drive you away from me?"

It would have been a million times simpler to do this at home where her hands could sit in the pockets of a ridiculously frumptastic sweater, where she could look as totally unattractive as possible. Then maybe he'd get rid of the notion that he wanted her back; couldn't Elzo see that she was damaged goods? Instead she was all dolled up into one of the tinier dresses she owned with shimmering stockings and heels making her a** look fabulous. God damn it.

When he tensed, she wanted to lightly rub his shoulders. Years of practice came into call and Audrey did a merry dance to shove those urges back into their little box of meaninglessness where they belonged. "I thought you were sneaking around on me. I saw you with that girl..the waitress?" Fingers were wrenching at each other almost painfully to keep her from babbling. "I saw you two at the corn maze. You weren't answering your phone or anything, and then you were with a really pretty girl all close. Then she was at dinner and you guys seemed so....intimate." A shoulder shrugged, pale sunny curls falling off the exposed skin. "I was jealous. And then the text message that you lied about. I admit being wrong to pick it up and see who it was, but I was just idle I guess. Then I thought you were being crude. I don't know, everything was all mixed up and I..." Fingers gripped the table now and she stared blankly out at the floor.

"Listen, I wasn't telling Sorrin this because he has no right to know. But I'm just not right for you. I'm not a bombshell, I don't speak any language but English and Hillbilly. I'm a bit self-conscious and more than a little jealous. I can talk all I want about not giving a damn about all those pretty girls you banged in the past, but being faced with one?" Ashamed, she looked at Elzo so he could see the misery and self-loathing in her eyes. "I can't compete with that. At all. So I guess in the end it's about me, not you." And it really was. Maybe if he wasn't with her, things wouldn't be so....tortuous.
PostPosted: Thu Nov 11, 2010 9:43 pm

Damn him. Damn him for never knowing. Never seeing. Guilt and shame pumped in his blood as she told him why she left him. Why she felt it was for the best. But for Elzo, he found his deepest shame with his ignorance. The ignorance he had hurt her while loving her. "I'm sorry." It was the first words out of his mouth. The weakest thing to say. "I had no idea." More weakness. Just petty words. Then it all came out. The truth flowed from his lips and he prayed it reached her ears, her heart.

"When I ran in Diana in the maze I was shocked. I hadn't seen her in over a year. We were..." Crap. "Intimate. But more then that she was my old friend. I told her about you, about how I planned to take you out to dinner on your birthday to the restarunt. She told me how she knew the owners and she'd help me set up our table, allow me to place the special arrangements. I'd have to pay, but, With her doing the paperwork personally I had the guarantee. The kiss? I...It's more of a cultural thing, friends kissing each other on the cheek. It was my bad. I- shouldn't have done. Let her do it. This isn't Europe. I..I ******** up." He felt terrible. Audrey was right. So right. Now that he could refelct on how it must have looked. He was an a**. A pure a**.

"Vicky was my lifeline all night. I just...wanted it to be perfect. I hounded her about every detail. About if you would like it. When you asked I..I froze up. I didn't want you to know I needed to Vicky to have the balls to do what I planned to do. Just...Pride." Again, he was a d**k. "I meant it as a joke, even if your gift was in my pocket. I was so happy when I got in the car. I thought things were going so well. I- I would never ask for sex if you didn't want it. I never expected it. I gave it up for you." His hand reached over, almost touching but not quite. "I still have given it up. It just doesn't matter to me anymore."

The look in her eyes was too much for him. The self control and retraint broke and his hand grabbed her own. "I love Audrey. I loved you since I first gave you the flowers I bought for no one. I dunno. Maybe, maybe somehow I knew I would find you. Maybe they led me to you. I don't why I loved you then but I know now. I love you Audrey. I don't care how you look, how you dress, how you act. I love the way you laugh, I love the way you tease me with riddles and complex problems. I love how you try to hide yourself with oversized colorful clothes. I love the small silly little references you make to warcraft at one am over the phone and I have no idea what they mean. I love you." He felt that something get heavy in his chest. The weight of a small box he had kept in his jacket got heavy as well.

"I love you even now, and if I could, I would love you forever if you'd let me."

Staring at their hands, all she wanted to do was turn hers over and twine their fingers together into those weird knots they'd always made while holding hands. His fingers were so big compared to hers, Audrey had always loved it about him. To hear him so fervently admit everything he loved about her, that he loved her more than anything, and always would had everything inside of her trembling. Why did she have to be female?! She was so weak anymore, was it part of becoming a woman, and having those female concerns? This was why she had shut people out of her life to begin with, because all they did was make you feel things that were painful and awful... and wonderful.

Pulling her hand from his in a jerk, she couldn't even meet Elzo's eyes without him seeing the shine in hers. "I can't...I just can't. I love you so much but I..." Shaking her head and teetering on needle heels, Audrey turned and tried to push through the crowd. Air, she needed the feel of the cool night air on her face. Vicky wasn't coming now, she knew it was all a setup to hopefully fix what had gone so very wrong. It was a lovely and noble thing to do, from the girl who didn't really believe in lasting love from a man, but it wasn't going to work.

Plunging into the air and turning away from the crowd, she just leaned against the brick and let the coolness of it leech the tortured warmth from her body. Maybe she should go back to Kansas. Or move to California like Rosie always talked about. They didn't need her here, for the Negaverse, and she was going to die here anyway. But no. She wanted to be here. Needed to be, to make sure those she loved were safe. How could she explain that to him?

Simply put, she couldn't.

He poured his heart out, exposed the most deepest emotions he had and all did was send her running. She loved him, but even so, she was running from him. The look of tears in her eyes was too much. It was all too much. Time distorted itself, the feeling of her leaving his hands taking longer and yet happening so quickly. "Audrey-" Too late, she was leave him again, running from him again. This time-
This time Elzo wasn't letting her run away with out him chasing after her. He lost the first love of his life because they had to run away from each other. He would be damned if he let the second woman, no, the TRUE woman he loved and ever would love escape him as well.

He knocked the chair over and he dashed after the newly changed blonde. Years on track and nights as a senshi came in handy and he dove in and out of the club's patrons, hunting for the exit, hunting for the girl he loved and refused to loose. As he slammed outside he called her name into the cold air. Where, which way? He bolted to the right, away from the crowd. He knew Audrey enough. She wouldn't want attention, she'd avoid people. She would hide. As he past the alley he saw her. Back turned from the street, hiding her face from view.

He dashed to grab her, he couldn't let her escape. He loved her. She needed to know just how much. He had to let her know. Hands grabbed her shoulder.
He had to let her know.

Unlike the assholes in the club, Audrey knew exactly whose hands were on her skin, whose arms were coming around her and making things difficult. If only she had been at home, there would have been an entire house between them -- Elzo wasn't the type of guy to bust down walls or windows to get to her, but out here where everything was exposed? She couldn't phase and teleport, or run across the rooftops in her human form. No cab was idling out front for her to climb into. He was bound to find her.

The struggle she gave as his arms wrapped around her was light, Audrey wasn't about to sucker punch him again for simply loving her and wanting her back in his life. "Let me go, Elzo! You don't understand that I'm bad for you! Look at how I messed things up. I'm making you miserable, you can't love me because I'm just awful." She was evil. A murderer. Yes, she did it for reasons that would eventually tip the scale to good in the end, but right now there was absolutely no way to explain it away.

She hadn't left Castor when she was supposed to, and look what happened there. It wouldn't happen to Elzo too, she wouldn't let it happen to this innocent who had never done anything wrong. Nonetheless, her hands were closed over his where they held her, struggles subsiding somewhat. She just didn't have the energy to fight him. She didn't want to fight him! Audrey just wanted him to understand, and to let her go.
PostPosted: Thu Nov 11, 2010 10:59 pm

There was a simple flaw in Audrey's logic. That Elzo could simply let her go. No, his love was like that of a man at sea. He clung to it, his lifeline, his one chance, and he would never let it go. Not until there was no other way. Not until it was torn from him would he ever give it up. Audrey was his love, his lifeline, and he refused to let her go until she was taken from him. That was how deep his love traveled. How much she meant to him. She had become his everything, and now, with each rejection he only held stronger, tighter. They loved each other, she even said so. So why did she want him to let her go? Why should he let the one thing that gave him such deep happiness pass him by? He couldn't, not since the day he handed her the bouquet of daises in the dead of winter. Audrey was his lifeline. Audrey was his love.

"Audrey please! I love you!" Arms beat against him, and he struggled to keep hold. Finally his hand found one wrist, and soon after he found the other. Pinning her to the wall, he didn't care how it looked. He didn't care how he might be a masochistic a*****e for just not letting her go. Elzo had to show her. She kept saying she wasn't good enough. No, she was wrong. It was the other way around. She was perfect, and he was the monster. He always had been the beast. She tamed him, turned him. She was his princess. All he wanted to be was her prince. "Look at me! I love you! You're perfect Audrey! You're the most perfect woman in the world! You make everything in this world matter to me. But you matter the most! With you I'm the happiest man alive. I loved you, love you now, and I always will love you!" Water clouded his vision. Had it started to rain? He couldn't tell. He couldn't tell that small tears had come to his eyes.

Pinning both her wrists with both hands, it allowed him one free hand. The free hand scrambled and shuffled in his coat pocket. fumbling here and there for something. When he pulled it out Elzo almost dropped it. The small red velvet box was held to her face. And with a click, Elzo flipped it open with his thump. "This is how much I love you Audrey! I want to love you forever! I want to be with you forever!" He left her hands go.

"I love you Audrey Collins."

The sheen of tears over his eyes stopped her struggles, but what was inside the box flipped open in front of her own eyes were what sent her totally limp with shock. Her palms braced against the wall as she fell back against it, looking up at Elzo, then back to those bright stones inside the box. "Elzo, you...oh God. My birthday. Sorrin showed me all the stuff you had done when he was trying to kick my a** for breaking up with you. God." Regaining a semblance of balance, the young woman reached out and wrapped her arms around him, face buried against his chest as she shook with emotion.

How did you fight something like that? When someone showed you tangible proof that they wanted to make you theirs forever, when they were fighting you tooth and nail to have you in their life. When they claimed you were perfection incarnate, what made their life meaningful? No one had ever said anything like that to her before, though Audrey had heard her father say similar things to her mother once during one of her many breakdowns over the baby. He didn't care about what was wrong, he loved her, she was his everything.

Was Elzo really the same? Could he really handle everything that might come with her? What would happen if one day, she just never came home? Closing her eyes tight, Audrey simply swore to herself that she wouldn't let that happen. Linarite would have to be a model Negaverser. Castor would have to die so that she could live and flourish happily with Elzo, who she loved. Who she didn't have to worry about dying for. Who she could trust to be there every night and every morning. If he really loved her that much, he would wait for her to be that person worthy of him, wholeheartedly his.

Muffled against his shirt, Audrey laughed shakily. "I love you, Elzo Xanis." Sliding back, fingers reached out and closed the box. "But we're both hurting right now. I think...I think we need to fix that first." Looking up into those deep blue eyes that tightened her heart, Audrey smiled softly. "One step at a time, okay? I'm sort of an old-fashioned girl at heart, I only ever say yes once, I wanna make sure it's perfect." The alleyway of a club while they were both ready to cry after making up from a fight was not the time for these sorts of things. She had to be able to trust it, and that he loved her enough for a lifetime.

No matter how long or short it might be.
PostPosted: Thu Nov 11, 2010 11:44 pm

The feeling of her in his arms, made it okay. It made the world okay. She was with him again. Near him, close to him again. Shutting the box, send a rock down the pit of core. Not yet. His body tightened on the action. He prayed she would say yes. Dreamed of it for so long. He knew she could say no. He even guessed she might but...it stung. It stung bitterly. Even while she said she loved him, he wanted that finality of putting the ring on her finger. The knowledge that they could and would be together forever.
"When will it be the right time?" His voice was still a tad shaky. If you listened closely you could hear the hurt tone, the fear that she would leave him again and run away. "I don't want to loose you again." He ran a hand in her hair, fingers tangling in the knots their struggles had doubtlessly made. "I mean, I seem to have lost out on that amazing bluenette and gotten a blonde bombshell instead. What happens next time?" He was chuckling a bit. Smiling. She loved him. He loved her. He could hope. "Contacts over your amazing molten gold eyes?" He could hope for that yes another night. A better night.

He'd give her that perfect night.

She had known that he would react badly, and didn't blame him for it at all. A part of Audrey ached very badly for someone to call her own forever, someone that she didn't have to worry about killing, dying for, having to fight, or any of those things. Someone outside of that world that she could truly fight for with renewed fervor. Audrey wanted to take the box, everything it symbolized, and throw herself into it a week after turning eighteen. But there was that logical, serious part of her that warned that this was her heart running away with her. If they got married fast, they would get divorced just as fast, and wasn't she the total opposite of that sort of Britney mentality?

She was.

Fingers linked with his now, holding the box in both of their hands. "Don't worry too much...I wanted to say yes. But I want to do this right. I love you, and I want to be absolutely positive when I do say yes. Please understand? I want to do this so that there's absolutely no way I'll ever lose you again, no matter how stupid and jealous I am." Audrey was absolutely ashamed of how she'd treated him, how she'd reacted, and the theatrics that had ensued.

Standing on tiptoes, her lips touched his softly with a shy, embarrassed laugh. "Listen, it is all Victoria's fault! She said I needed to change so that I could move on and catch some new c**k. Or something." Her free hand reached up to touch it lightly and smooth some back from her face. "Do you hate it? I figure I look more like your Barbie friend anyway." Unable to resist, even if they had just gotten through a fight, she lightly pressed in. "Does it do the same thing?" If Elzo wasn't convinced that she still loved him, and wanted to be with him, he was a total post!
