Room number 18. Adeline had been standing outside the door for almost a few minutes now, pretending she was looking for something important in her purse when reality she was just stalling her entrance. She didn't really even know why she was hesitating, because her roommate might have already been in there? Not knowing what the room would be like? Worst case scenario would be that it was the wrong room all together, and she entered in on something private...oh. God. With a rolling suitcase parked next to her, and another bag dropped at her feet, the gorgon girl started having second thoughts on this whole 'dormitory' thing. She had only decided to move out because she needed some more space, needed to get away from her brother. ...And it was the thought of Theo that spurred her forward, scrambling to pick up her belongings and half trip toward the door. ANYTHING was better than having to share the same space as her monster of a brother, even crashing into some stranger's room and getting yelled at.
Her knock was a soft one, so she cleared her throat to announce herself further. "Um. I'm letting myself in." She didn't really hear Sorrel in there...but it was a polite gesture.

Sorrel was, in fact, already in the room. She hadn't arrived much before Adeline, however; she had only found the room perhaps five or ten minutes before. It was hard for her to judge when she had spent the entire time since she had arrived being horrified.
Blue eyes wide, the girl had dropped her bags at the foot of the bed nearest the door before proceeding to slump down onto it, completely stunned. She had spent so much time building up to this experience since she had been told weeks ago that she would be allowed to move out of the house, that just maybe she had glorified the idea of the dorms in her mind. What had she been expecting? Big, soft beds, a wide-screen TV mounted on the wall, nice furniture, maybe even some jazz music playing in the background like when first entering your room at a fancy hotel. A chocolate on her pillow, at least. But certainly not... this.
The room was tiny, and so was everything else in it - if she hadn't been so busy thinking about how drab the walls were and how much of a crime against nature it was that they didn't even have a carpet, she would have wondered how the taller male students would manage sleeping on the beds if they were all this size. They did have a TV, but it was an older model, and not nearly as big as she had expected. It was just starting to dawn on her that they were missing a few very important necessities when she heard Adeline's voice coming through the door.
Broken out of her horrified stupor, Sorrel lunged from the edge of the bed to the door and flung it open. "Adeline!" she exclaimed, looking and sounding so distraught she might have seemed almost deranged. "It's hideous!"

There was very little she could do to predict Sorrel's outrage, as Adeline hadn't even realized her friend was in the room. Perhaps if she had braced herself even a little, she would've been able to handle the fact that the other girl swung the door open right out from under her hand - and even better - yelled right at her face.
Alas, it seemed that was not the case, and instead of sharing in the trauma that Sorrel wanted to get across, Adeline freaked. Something like a little shriek jumped from her throat, and she took a swift step back that proved fatal with the combination of unsteady heels and a poorly placed suitcase. She went sprawling onto her butt in the most undiginified way possible, staring incredulously at Sorrel with a writhing nest of yellow on her head. Immediately upon returning to her wits, she re-arranged herself to make sure her skirt was still sitting as it should have been. Yes. The state of her dress was first on her priorities list.
"SORREL, YOU ARE RIDICULOUS." she managed, flustered and dark in the cheeks as she hastily tried to get her feet beneath her again. "I should kick you!" Only, she wouldn't. Not only did she like Sorrel, but that would put her at risk of falling again. Fashion would be the death of her.

Sorrel just stared as Adeline toppled over, blinking down at her friend as she landed on the floor. Despite how abruptly she had yanked the door open, she hadn't been expecting that to happen. And for a brief moment the blue-haired girl was torn between feeling amused and guilty. She ended up compromising, however, when she half-giggled through her apology.
"Sorry!" she said, sounding breathless as she attempted to suppress the giggles and only partially succeeding. "I didn't mean to scare you like that. Here, give me your hand. You'll understand when you see it though," she added ominously as she took her friend's hand and helped her to her to her feet, all previous traces of amusement in her tone completely gone once again. "It really is awful."
She cast a dark glance over her shoulder into the mostly-gray room and shuddered.

Adeline's bottom lip pressed forward underneath knitted brows, giving her the look of a very indignant little girl. Her blushing was another clue to saying just how little humor she found in having fallen, although she didn't comment on Sorrel's giggles. She decided to pretend this had never happened, and reached for the hand offered to her while she shuffled awkwardly to her feet. There was a snooty hiss from behind her as she got re-situated, her tail wrapping around one of her legs grumpily. She ignored this, too.
"Yes...it's fine, we're going to act like that never happened though." the girl said slowly, slipping her hand back so she could cross her arms over her chest. "What's the big deal though? How could it be so bad that you needed to explode out of the room for it?" Her eyes darted over Sorrel's shoulder, spotting very little than a general grayness and the edges of furniture, so she made her way around her friend to take a better look. It was at that point that she recoiled, and immediately turned back to Sorrel with a look of horror.
"...That's not the whole room, is it?"
The purple girl took a few more hurried steps into the room, glanced around, then retreated to the doorway with a more frantic look on her face than before. One hand whirled to point behind herself as she asked the big question.
"WHY DO I NOT SEE A BATHROOM?"

Sorrel had to resist the urge to laugh more at Adeline's reaction to her laughter. "Oh, I'm sorry!" she said, grinning and taking a step back, "I wasn't laughing at you. I was just surprised too, that's all. And I'm sorry to you guys too, please don't be upset with me." The last part was directed at her friend's snakes; she smiled apologetically in their direction.
At the suggestion that the Room Situation might not be as bad as she was making it out to be, Sorrel crossed her arms, arching one eyebrow as she turned her head to regard Adeline sidelong. "Is that doubt I hear? Go on, then. Take a look for yourself." She took a step to the side and allowed her friend to walk past her to get a better look.
Adeline's reaction was exactly the one she had been looking for. "Unless there's some sort of secret entrance to a bathroom or a kitchen, that's the whole room." Uncrossing her arms, Sorrel then spread them out in a gesture of incredulous dismay. "Can you believe it? It's horrible!"

Even though Sorrel had taken the time to apologize, and with a valid excuse to boot, there was a mutual look of annoyance on the face of every single one of the gold snakes that said they were unimpressed. Quite unimpressed actually, as half of them refused to even look in her direction to acknowledge the comment - a bunch of bruised egos to be tended to. Had the room Adeline entered not inspired such a huge reaction of disgust, they probably would've been snotty the rest of the day. As it was... "I. I don't even." Adeline spat, squeezing her fingers into fists at her sides. She didn't even seem to be able to form a logical response to the room, so she stomped back in - leaving her luggage out in the hallway- and went immediately to one of the beds. She pressed her hands onto the mattress, then the pillow, turned around and stared at the room again. When her eyes finally met Sorrel's, her expression was shadowed with some kind of unbridled horror. "This bed is not even soft. This is unacceptable."
It was humorous to see how much the situation bothered her, until you realized how serious she was about it. The idea of a very gray, very under-equipped room of mediocrity was not what she had in mind when she agreed to move in. Judging by the bristling mass of snakes framing her face, she could've been ready to go and speak to the administration. With a slow few steps forward, she looked meaningfully at her friend, and with a hushed voice, "...The bathroom. Please tell me it's clean?"

If Sorrel noticed that the snakes were still upset with her, she didn't say anything of it. She was too distracted watching Adeline examine the room, truthfully - and every bit of reaction she got from the other girl gave her a little bit of relief, a little bit of satisfaction, and a little bit more horror - as though her friend's dismay were validating her own, and then multiplying it. At least she had someone else to be upset with, though all that did was fuel the fire.
Sorrel didn't appear any less upset by the room than Adeline did, and had the other girl mentioned it, she probably would have gone to talk to someone about it right along with her. However, when the question of the bathroom they had to share with all the other girls came up, she realized with a sort of sinking dread that she didn't know the answer.
"Honestly? I don't know. I haven't seen the bathroom yet," she admitted, tone lowered ominously. She was almost afraid to admit it, afraid to even think about the possibilities. The idea of a public restroom, even one shared by girls that were living there permanently, didn't have much promise. "...Do you think we should go take a look?"

There was a moment where it seemed as if Adeline might literally burst with another fit of anger at the whole room situation; her shoulders tensed so tightly over her clenched fists that she was probably considering punching the room for what drama it was causing her. Luckily (outside of that being impossible to pull off), she managed to take a deep breath in and calm the nerves enough to march past Sorrel, grab her suitcases from the middle of the hallway, and drag them in a most uncivilized manner into the gray abyss of the dorm room. She didn't even bother picking up the suitcase that clipped the corner of the bed and toppled over, she just left it there in her raw determination to experience the rest of what this school had to offer her.
"That's all I need to hear. Of course we have to look." The snake girl announced curtly, the pout on her mouth seeming permanent for the time being. She placed a hand on her friend's upper arm and squeezed a little, tugging her forward. "If the worst happens, I just want you to know, I valued our time together. It's a shame if it all ends with filth and germs and crusty bad things in a public bathroom." Thankfully, this last part was an intended joke, but the underlying sense of anxiety was not to be missed in her voice. Even as she walked forward, there was a stiffness in her steps that clearly betrayed the fact that a revolting bathroom did indeed freak her out.

Sorrel didn't resist as she was pulled forward. Instead, she looked seriously at Adeline, kicking the door shut on the hideously plain room behind them. "I valued our time together too, and I really hope it doesn't have to end in a public bathroom." The idea of that, however irrational, caused a knot of cold panic to form in her chest and she swallowed hard. "I really, really hope it doesn't end in a public bathroom." The apprehension seemed to only intensify as they marched their way down the hall to their dreaded destination in tense silence. Images of possible horrors flashed through her mind, each one worse than the last.
By the time they reached the bathroom door it was evident in Sorrel's posture and expression that she was starting to have second thoughts about wanting to see what was behind it. "Are you ready?" she asked Adeline without looking away from the sign on the door, lifting one shaking hand to press her palm against the flat surface of it. She took one deep breath, trying her best to perform the impossible task of preparing herself for what she was about to see.

"We can hope for the best, but my level of optimism has been utterly depleted with that gray...cell. Room." Adeline muttered distractedly under her breath, voice getting carelessly low so that most of the sentence was probably impossible for Sorrel to decipher. The lines of stress and concentration that creased around her eyes meant that this teenager meant business. Her mental plan was complicated and included a lots of promise to redecorate and humanize her living arrangements one room at a time; the concept of a public bathroom, though? How much could she do with a place like that? As much as she might like to try, it would be impractical to stand at the sinks all day and order people around. Not to mention, she would probably need a whip to do the job well.
Her eyes suddenly focused on her roommate's hand on the door, prompting the plan to be filed away for the moment. She'd have to inspect the damages before deciding on the rehabilitation course. "No. I am not ready." She mentioned in a clipped tone, standing very still and then contradicting herself. Movement like the strike of a real snake, she slammed the door abruptly open with both hands -- nearly jumping back with the assumption that something might fly out at her.
To be honest, it was better than she thought. The floor was tidy enough, with sleek tiles and walls that weren't splattered with any kind of - oh, anything. Gore? Disease? Adeline hesitantly shuffled to the center of the room and analyzed what she could see of the sinks. The bathroom stalls. The showers? And then she sighed.
"Well. I'll probably light a candle."

The swiftness of Adeline's attack on the door caused Sorrel to jump, her own hand flinching back in a moment of surprise. She, evidently, hadn't been expecting that. But what lay behind the previously closed door quickly caught her attention. She took another step forward and, placing the hand that had previously been on the door onto the door frame, leaned in to get a better look.
Just how she had built her mental image of their drab dorm room to be much fancier, she had similarly built up her mental image of the bathroom to be absurdly disgusting. She had imagined concrete, cracked ceramic and broken-glass mirrors, stall doors falling from their hinges. Maybe even broken faucets or a dripping shower head. But the place, while certainly not first class, was clean and tidy. It didn't even smell bad, as far as she could tell, and there was a distinct lack of dripping in the silence. A frown pulled down the corners of her lips. It was almost disappointing, in a twisted sort of way. Was all that build up for nothing? She followed Adeline into the bathroom, frown still in place.
"A candle would be nice," Sorrel agreed, almost grudgingly. "Maybe a flower arrangement by the sinks or something, to brighten the place up." She started to pace around the bathroom slowly. First she examined the sinks, then the stalls, then the showers, looking for anything to complain about. But she found only a piece of tissue laying here or there - nothing noteworthy. She returned to her friend's side, looking vaguely troubled.
"Well. It's cleaner than a mall bathroom, at least. Maybe a little more boring."

The two girls shared the same sentiment of disappointment; although it was better off that the bathroom couldn't be the filming site for a horror movie, Adeline had maybe craved a little more drama. Or maybe she just wanted something to complain about - but in the end, that's what their dorm room was for. She could complain infinitely about that gray room until they had the chance to fix it up. Pacing a little, listening to her own heels click on the tiles, she examined a row of toilets and then the sinks. "Really... I suppose some flowers would be nice too. A little bit of color." She frowned, and delicately nipped at her bottom lip. "But otherwise, it's all right. Which is good, because there is nothing WORSE than a dirty bathroom. Have I mentioned that yet?" She had.
That being said, she hunched her shoulders a little to suppress a shudder and returned again to Sorrel, passing it off as a shrug. "I don't know, while this is a victory, it hasn't ended the war. I've yet to see half the building and am sure there's something bad lurking here. I just feel it. Something dirty or just gross." (If only she knew the bad vibes were probably coming from her brother's room) She shook her head and looked meaningfully at the door, suddenly uncomfortable with the fact that they were standing in the middle of the bathroom. "Maybe...we should go back, unless you want to check somewhere else?"
