Max stood in the crowd and watched as the Mayor gave a speech at the start of the town festival. His father was standing next to the stand he had set up on the main street, to sell his wares. Maximilian's father was a weapon smith, he wasn't rich, but he was very skilled at what he did. Max would have been hanging out with his friends as he often did, but his father wanted his help with the festival this year, as Max had just turned 14. After the mayor had finished, everyone scattered and got to their festivities. Max walked over to his father and he told Max what he was supposed to do. Max was to stand on a street corner and tell passers by about the stand his father had. He stood on a street corner in the center of town and did his job, pointing random strangers in the general direction of his father's stand.
As he took a break and stepped back for a moment. As he did, he bumped into someone and he tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over and started to say, "Hey! why don't you watch where you're going you idiot-" He stopped abruptly when he saw who he had bumped into, it was the Mayor's daughter. He quickly tried to apologize, waving his hands back and forth in front of his face, without even getting up from where he was. He expected her to yell at him, or be annoyed at him, or angry at him. But he didn't hear anything of that from her.

Evengelina stood behind her father for a moment longer, savoring the fragrance of the long awaited spring. She was distracted by the loud chatters that filled the air and all the new sights that surrounded her. Then with a determined air she set out to explore the marketplace despite her father’s cruel demands that she stay within sight. She didn’t understand why it was so necessary that she had to keep close to him. It was nearly impossible to lose him, because he was standing behind a podium that could be seen by hundreds and thousands of people throughout the square.
The midmorning marketplace was thriving with customers. Peddlers shouted their wares and wages; The odors of food wafted through the air. Evee widened her eyes at all of the possible things that one could buy: On one side flour, eggs, carrots, beef; On the other side garments, accessories, belts, gems, jewels all exotic items from around the world. She scanned the stalls and ran about engaging herself to see all that was to be seen. Tiny paws, beaks, and whiskers of creatures poked out from behind the brass bars of the cages littered among the street. She ran around poking her nose about and soaking in the new and exciting experiences.
Suddenly, Evee watched in horror as a man held a squawking chicken in his bare hand, lowering the struggling body onto a wooden plank. The man’s free hand held a sharp knife which swiftly made a downward motion slaughtering and severing the chicken’s head in meer seconds.
She inwardly winced, not being able to shut her eyes as the scene unfolded in front of her. Evee backed up slowly; never before had she witnessed anything so cruel. She bit back the tears, her throat felt lumpy and dry making her feel as though she would choke.
Evee shut her eyes and turned to run, only to find that she didn’t get very far. She collided with something soft and lumpy and before falling to the hard cement below. Evee opened her eyes to a boy’s expression change from an angry one to an apologetic one. Not able to hold in her tears any longer, Evee flung herself onto him into a tight embrace, sobbing silently.

No sooner had his apology left his mouth than the Mayor's daughter flung herself on him in a hug, sobbing to herself. Max froze for a few moments, he didn't know how to react. After a few more moments he wrapped his arms around her, and stood up while still hugging her, bringing er to her feet as well. He let go and said, "Hey, c'mon, it's all right Miss Evengelina. Here, if you want to, I'll bring you back to your father. Is that alright?" Evee shook her head frantically meaning 'no.' Max was kind of taken aback, what did this girl want? He thought for a moment then gently said, "Well, do you want to come and meet my dad? He's really nice, and I'm sure you'll like him." Evee wiped a tear from her eye and nodded slowly.
Max smiled and walked her back to his father's stand. They passed a number of vendors who said 'hi' and waved to Max, but froze when they saw Evee. Max got a strange feeling there were eyes aimed at the back of his head as he walked Evee down the street. He saw that his father had just finished a sale, and was waving to the customer as they waved back walking away. He turned to see his son with an arm placed gently around Evee's shoulder, with her smiling lightly.
He looked down and saw a fairly bad scrape on her knee. He walked forward and said, "Why, Miss Evengelina! What happened? Come in, come in, let me bandage that wound." Max led Evee inside their home and sat down with Evee in the living room, Evee wincing as she did. Max smiled at her and said, "Well, don't worry Miss Evengelina, my dad will patch you up in no time and then you can head back out and... Wait, you didn't want to go back to your father... any particular reason why?" He smiled again with a reassuring look in his eyes. He was the son of a salesman after all, he had to know how to do that sort of thing.

At this point, Evee had already stopped crying. She perked up a little as she entered the house; never before had she set steps in a commoner’s house before. Despite the stinging pain from her knee, Evee purposefully took smaller strides in her steps due to the fact that the floors were creaking and groaning. Even found this a very unusual yet amusing experience. Glancing around Evee took notice that instead of bright colorful elegant floral wallpaper she was used to, there were layers upon layers of peeled paint of all hues and shades of dull grays. Evee’s eyes traced along the room, surveying every little inch of detail she could possibly find. It astounded her how different and uncanny their way of living was to hers.
Evee’s eyes caught sight of a scrawl in the corner of the room just by the doorway; a juvenile looking scribble of what seemed to be a boat. It seemed to be faded and smeared, obviously worn out by time. She felt a grin tug on her lips; if she attempted anything like that the maids would go haywire back home. Evee would have been heavily reprimanded and it would have been erased immediately. Despite the distinguishing differences between their homes, there was something Evee enjoyed about their house; it had a personal warm and homey feeling to it.
As she was lead to a chair, Evee took a seat and allowed the boy’s father patch her up. Evee finally turned her attention to the boy as he spoke, “You can call me Evee, er-” She said, flushing slightly not knowing the boy’s name. It felt odd to her that someone of her age was addressing her by her full and formal name; despite the fact she was never introduced to any boys or girls her age before.
Evee looked down at her toes, “I…I don’t know.” She sighed in response. Her father wasn’t exactly cruel to her; he was just too overprotective and misunderstanding. She enjoyed being out in the city; rather walled up in her room and the mansion all day long. She disliked being waited on; Evee felt like eyes were always on her never any privacy. Despite all of the people around her all the time, Evee felt lonely, not being able to run free and express her opinions. The only accompaniment she had were the wallpapers portraying fake birds and flowers that were plastered all around the house.
Suddenly a large banging sounds were heard on the front door. “Open this door or we will be forced to break it down! Orders from the Mayor!” A voice called out in a threatening tone. Through the window, one could easily see the dark shadowy silhouettes five burly men outside waiting.

Max smiled again and said, "Alright then Evee. My name's Maximilian, but you can call me Max." Max's father came back in the room with a bucket of water and some bandages, as well as a pair of tweezers. After picking some clinging gravel out of her wound, Max's father washed the wound out with a wet cloth, then bandaged it. He looked up, smiled at her, and said, "There you go Miss Evengelina, all better. Just keep those bandages on for a day or two and you'll be fine."
Max smiled at his father as he went to put his supplies away, then turned back to Evee as she spoke quietly. Max chuckled and responded, "Well, that's alright. How about this? When you feel up to it, I'll take you out and around the city. We can enjoy the festival-" Just as he was about to finish, a loud knocking came on the door, and the Mayor and his guards announced themselves. Max's father rushed to the door and opened it, at which point, the Mayor's guards pushed him back into the room, and the Mayor himself entered behind them. He stepped past his guards and said, rudely, "What a disgusting little hovel. Why in the world would anyone want to live here? Evengelina? Where are you? Time to come home with me. This is no time to be exploring the gutters with these... rats." As Max's father was pushed back, he regained his balance and bowed and said a few apologies to the mayor; Max however, did not. He stood in front of the Mayor with a defiant expression on his face.
He stared up at the Mayor who was a good foot and a half taller than him. He said, with a tinge of anger in his voice, "You may be the mayor of this city... But that doesn't give you the right to come into another person's house and insult them! All me and my dad were doing was trying to help your daughter-!" Before Max could finish, the Mayor hit him across the face, knocking him backwards. Max's father tried to step forward but the Mayor made a motion with his hand and the guards blocked his path, making sure he couldn't interfere. Max wiped his mouth off, as blood was trickling from his now bleeding lip, he turned back to the Mayor and continued, "You call yourself her father? Then start treating her like it! She didn't want to go back to you! I've seen the way you treat her, locking her up in your mansion, never letting her leave! You should treat your daughter with more respect! Let her live her own life, not control it for her-!" The Mayor took a swing at Max again, this time knocking him to the ground.
The Mayor looked down angrily at the defiant boy and growled, "Learn your place boy. You have no right to lecture me you little brat. You lower class ruffians are all the same, just trash waiting to be disposed of. Max stood back up, blood running down the side of his head, due to a cut the Mayor had caused. He wiped his face slightly, letting the blood trickle down the side of his head, and said, "Well who has the right then Mayor? If no one can tell you that you're ruining your daughter's life, who's going to stop you from completely destroying her life like you did your wife's?!" Max yelled back at the mayor.
It was a well known fact that Evee's mother, the Mayor's wife, had committed suicide just a few months after Evee was born. Rumors and gossip traveled quickly in the town, and rumor was that it was because of the Mayor that she was driven to such a thing. Max stood there defiantly waiting for the next blow from the Mayor. The Mayor raised his arm and was about to hit Max yet again. Max simply stood there staring the Mayor down, not bothering to block the punch that was surely going to hurt more than the previous two punches combined.

Evee returned the smile at both Max and leaned over to get a better look at her now bandaged knee. Even the fabric looked and felt different than the ones she had at home. She delightfully expressed her gratitude with a bow of her head, “Thank you Sir”. Gazing around the room, Evee caught sight of her reflection; her hair was muddled and hampered due to the fall and the bow in her hair was lopsidedly entangled. Loosening the ribbon, she set it aside on the coffee table listening to Max talk. When Max mentioned festival, Evee’s heart leaped in joy and was quickly shot down by the rough banging noises upon the door.
Though slightly muffled, his loud booming voice echoed through the house, sending Evee to cower behind the sofa as she timidly watched Max and his father leave to answer the door. After listening to some long extensive array of boisterous conversation, Evee took the courage to take it upon herself to go see what was going on for fear of what her father might do to the poor family.
Evee clung to the doorway, watching as the scene unfolded. The light streaming through the window cast the moving shadows upon her face as she watched in horror her father strike down the boy she was starting to befriend. It pained her to see the poor boy being beaten especially after how he brought her here to take care of her wounds. “No!!!! She cried, darting forward so fast she nearly stumbled over one of the floorboards and tore between Max and her father. Her arms were outstretched and she shut her teary eyes, bracing herself for final blow. However the sharp pain never came. She opened her eyes slowly and sobbed with pleas, “Don’t do this father! I fell and they took me in and cared for me!” Her father stood there paralyzed, his fist still raised in the air with an astonished expression on his face. His look of surprise quickly melted away replacing it with a displeased and cross one. His hand reached forward and snatched Evee’s and yanked her wrist tightly, dragging her to the door. Evee threw one last apologetic look at Max before she was pulled away.
Before exiting the compound, he turned and leaned in close to Max’s father bearing his clenched teeth and glowering at him with wide enraged eyes. “You will do well to teach your son to hold his tongue or so help me I will rip your title as a blacksmith, take all that is dear to you, and tear down this wretched place, and leave you begging in the streets for mercy” He growled before storming out of the house with his guards close behind.

Max opened his eyes in surprise to see Evee suddenly appearing in front of him. He was grateful that Evee had stepped in front of him, but slightly surprised; it wasn't a common occurrence for an aristocrat to stand up for a commoner. As Evee was dragged away, Max said, quietly, "You didn't have to do that you know. There's nothing to be sorry for..." A tinge of red appeared on Max's face, and he turned away, slightly embarrassed and also slightly happy that Evee stood up for him. Max wasn't too sure how he felt about Evee, but he was glad that she seemed to differ from her father's personality.
He turned to his father who looked a bit shaken up, and said, "Dad, why do we have to listen to that guy? I mean, sure he's the mayor, but he doesn't control our lives. He just strong-arms people into doing what he wants... He's not fit to be the mayor here..." Max's father sighed and turned to look him in the eyes. He didn't say anything, but looked at him in a way that said, "We can't do much of anything about it." Max sighed and walked over to the sink in the kitchen and cleaned his face, the cuts he sustained burning on contact with the water.
Max walked out of the kitchen, and sat down on the couch for a short bit. He looked on the coffee table and saw the red ribbon Evee had taken out of her hair. A plan immediately started forming in Max's head. He smiled, grabbed the bow and quickly raced to his room and grabbed a cloak he had, it was about Evee's size he guessed. He hurried back down stairs and was nearly out the door when his father said, "Max... If you're about to do what I think you're going to do... be careful... and remember to have her home before dawn. Max beamed and darted out of the house, heading for the mayor's mansion.
As Max ran, he clutched the ribbon tightly in his left hand, with the cloak slung over his right shoulder. He hurried up the hill to the mansion and made his way quietly around the wall until he reached what he was looking for; the hole in the stone wall that was big enough for Max to fit through easily. He quickly went through and waited outside the first floor bedroom belonging to Evee. He saw the lights come on and ducked down. He heard the Mayor's faint voice telling Evee that she wasn't to leave her room.
When he heard the door shut he peered up over the window sill and saw Evee alone in her room. He quickly tapped on the glass trying to get her attention. Evee looked up and Max tapped on the window again, she came over and opened it. Max popped his head up and said, handing her the ribbon, "Hi Evee. You left this at my house, thought you might want it back. Say... that offer for seeing the festival is still available... if you want..." Max held up the cloak he had and shook it a bit with a smile on his face.

Being reprimanded by her father after they reached only further dampened her mood. Evee never had any friends; not of her age at least. It saddened her that her father could hold so much hatred for the poor; she didn't seem to see anything wrong with them. Evee decided, after meeting the boy and her father that the civilians aren't as bad as her father made them out to be. After the door slammed, she threw herself onto the bed and buried her face in her pillow, forcing back the tears that were starting to form in her eyes.
Tap Tap Tap.
Evee didn't respond, thinking it was probably a late-night-squirrel or highly confused bird. She was in no mood to check for little critters.
Tap Tap.
"Stop it!" she demanded through a muffled voice of her pillow.
Tap Tap Tap.
Evee sat up and grabbed her pillow, making her way to the window with her arm raised, ready to strike out at whatever creature may be disturbing her window. Once she saw Max's face, she dropped the pillow and hurried to open the window sill. Sliding the glass window open she peered out, "Max?? What are you doing here? How did you-" She quickly hushed with a hand over her mouth as she saw a light turn on in the hallway. She quickly closed the window and jumped onto the bed in her previous position as the door opened.
"Evengelina?" A maid peeked in, "Sorry Ma'am, I thought I'd check up on you. I thought I heard voices." She stated, peering around the room quizzically.
Evee pulled her face from the pillow, "N-No, Everything is fine. Father is upset with me..... I-I was......just reciting words on how to apologize tomorrow..."
"Ah I see, I know its not my place but your father seemed angry. It's a good thing that you are doing."
Evee nodded, "Goodnight Elle" she said, trying not to sound eager to get rid of her maid.
"Goodnight dearie" The maid responded, not noticing anything out of the ordinary.
As soon as the door closed, Evee sprinted out of bed and reopened the window. "Sorry about that..." She said sheepishly, staring down at Max, humbly accepting the ribbon. As soon as he mentioned the festival Evee felt her eyes widen with excitement, "I would love you go with you" She said in hushed yet excited tone. "But...if my father finds out..." She said trailing off, looking at him worriedly. She knew that if Mayor found out after today's incident, he would not be so forgiving to poor Max and his father.

Max smiled as Evee looked at him worriedly, he could tell she was different from her father. According to Max's father, she probably was more like her mother than anything. Evee's mother was apparently a kind caring person, who never looked down on anyone, Evee probably even looked like her. Max, still smiling, replied to her trailing off, " Oh stop worrying, me and my dad can take care of ourselves. Besides, I'd like to see them take that shop from me and my dad. We aren't the best weapon smiths around for nothing, we know how to forge a good blade because we know how they're meant to be used. C'mon, you'll have fun, I promise." Max handed Evee the cloak and waited for her to get ready.
Max wondered what to go see first, he really wanted Evee to have a good time. He tried to plan out what to do in his head, "Well, first I should probably take her around the town, let her look at the different stalls and vendors and such. Then we can head to the carnival that's going on just outside the center square, see what they have going on there... I hear they also have some fireworks planned to go off later, we could watch those." Max tapped his foot against the nearby stone wall as he waited. He was, despite his fairly calm appearance, very excited. He hadn't known Evee for long at all, but he knew that this was going to be the start of a very good friendship.
Once Evee had finished getting ready, he helped her out the window, and led her back down to the town. As he did, he asked, "So where do you want to go first? I was thinking we could maybe explore the streets a bit, maybe check out a bunch of the different vendors they have. After that, we could go to the carnival maybe. I hear they've got fireworks planned for later, those'll be cool." By the time they reached the town, it was getting dark, but the streets were still lit up by lights and vendors selling their wares. The light of the streets and the darkness of the sky added a beautiful contrast to the horizon. Max stopped and stared, smiling as he did. He turned to Evee and asked, "So what do you think Evee? Will you allow me the honor of being your date this evening?" Max, still smiling, outstretched a hand to Evee, waiting for her reply.

Evee nodded at his words whilst reaching out to take the cloak from him gratefully. She quickly threw it over herself, fastening it at her neck. "One second Max" She breathed excitedly. Running back to her bed, she slipped the pillows under the cover to make it appear as if there was someone sleeping there.
As she made way back to the window she smiled. She had always dreamed of sneaking out; however she never had the guts to do it herself. Now things were different; at least she'll know where she was going.
Placing one foot over the window, she pulled herself up and over and landed next to Max beaming, taking note that he was nice enough to help her. "I don't know. Surprise me!" She grinned. To answer his question; Evee placed her hand into Max's tightly, and started running gleefully, racing off towards the small hole in the wall in which she could visibly see. So that's how he got in! She was ecstatic to experience the great outdoors for the first time with Max.

Time Skip Ahead 4 Years Max leaned back, with his head against the stone wall, He had done this so many times in the past few years, why would he hesitate now? It was because of what he was about to tell Evee, Max was completely aware that Max was really the only kind of contact she had with the outside, other than her father's planned parties and high class visitors. Max thought of that despicable pretty boy Nathaniel, and it left a bad taste in his mouth. His brother Ron was okay, why did he have to be such a... Max pushed the thoughts out of his mind as he heard the door shut and the lights went out inside Evee's room. He stood up straight and approached the window quietly. He sighed and slowly knocked on the window he had so many times before. Waiting for Evee to open the window, as she always did, and tell her something that was going to change the way things were in their lives. "Evee... I got something to tell you... There's something I need to tell you... Evee... I'm..." Max's rehearsed thoughts were cut short as he heard the window open. he turned to see Evee standing inside, smiling at him.

Evee rushed out of the bathroom, quickly throwing on and a towel over her shoulder to protect her nightgown from her moist and soaked hair when she thought she heard the familiar tapping sounds upon her window.
Evee hurried to the window with high expectancy that Max would be there; as always. It became a usual routine for them to meet up everyday outside her window around this hour since she was twelve. Whether it was a brief hello or a long intriguing discussion, seeing Max was always a highlight of Evee's day. It was something Evee always looked forward to with great anticipation.
Sliding open the glass window, Evee beamed down at him, "Max! I am so glad to see you today" ...as always She wanted to add. Evee caught a bit of the cold air flooding into the room and she shivered slightly but it didn't phase her too much otherwise. She was just happy that Max was there. "What? What do you have to tell me?" Evee asked, not noticing the grim tone in his voice, "Wait! Me first!" She interrupted him, trying not to burst out in giggles. Looking back at her misfortune today turned out to be hilarious now that she tried to visualize what had happened earlier. She only hoped that Max would find it funny as well.
Evee picked up her soaked hair and started to ring the water into the towel a bit, hoping that she wouldn't drip water on him, "Geez, you should have been there earlier, you would of had a good laugh..." She said, flushing slightly. "You know Nathanial right? Nathanial Whiteraven." She said making a sour face as if she had swallowed a lemon for even mentioning his name. Shuddering in disgust she shook her head, "Well anyways, father threw another one of his absurd parties again," These parties seem to be occurring more and more for some reason... She thought as she continued, "and well the "Pretty Boy", asked for a dance. Naturally I declined but father strongly insisted that I do. Next thing I know, he leans excruciatingly close to my face and as soon as I realized he was going to.........sigh, you know." She made another expression full of disgust before continuing her story, "So I back up quickly and then I fell into a fountain which practically succeeded in embarrassing me in front of everyone, but also saved my life!" She felt grateful for taking the drenching fall. "Anyways, that's not the best bit; As I fell, my foot flew forward and I somehow managed to knock him backwards into a cart with a large cake. It was hysterical!" She finished with a laugh, picturing the whole scene playing again in her head. She turned her attention to Max to observe his reaction, hoping he would get the same satisfaction as she was feeling by hearing her story.
"So what did you have to tell me? Sorry, I kind of interrupted you..." Evee said sheepishly as she started to realize he might've have had something decently important to say.

Ron loosened the tie that was already hanging around his neck from when he had loosened it at the party. The party at the Mayor's estate was fairly boring for him, The only other girl his age that was there was Evee and well she wasn't interested in any one at all really. So for the most of the party Ron had just sat around listening to the grumpy old men who smelled like expired cologne talk about boring things like politics. At one point Ron had gotten excited becuase there was talk about war but none of the old farts really new anything. The only really exciting thing that happened was Nate getting kicked into a cake. Which Ron was about to laugh up. "So Nate which part was the ultimate part of your plan to "romance" Evee? The part where she thought you were going to give her cooties with your fish lips or the part where you dove into the cake like a majestic boar?" he said before busting out into laughter. It really was hilarious to Ron to see his older brother humiliated so much. He always spent so much being full of himself that it was great to see him knocked down a peg.

Magnus was by the entrance of the mayors hall in his formal uniform of the guard as he stood stalk still. As one of the guard it was his duty to stand watch at a party. It had been his misfortune to be chosen for this one and he was beginning to regret every moment that was passing by.
the awkward lighting and flashy fashion was making his head spin as he stood there and wished things to all be over. "What a slut," beside him a man stood chuckling as he commented on the way people dressed and acted. Magnus Scowled as he turned to the being, "Will you stop that?" he snapped and an older woman standing next to the man jumped, startled and ran in the other direction, squeezing her fan, with a look of terror on her face. the man chuckled "I was wondering when you were going to say something," he said with a smile. "Magnus!" a large burly man walked up to him in his own uniform and stared down at him with an angry glare. "I told you to stay still and be quiet!" the large man hissed at him all the while not breaking his proper stance. "You were quite clear in this father yes." Magnus said his eyes a dull as he looked back at his old man. A frustrated look came over the mans eyes as he looked at his son, an unexpected reply had caught the man off guard and he had to think for a moment about what he was going to do. "Get out, we cant have you scaring all the guests at the Mayors party." he rumbled as he stepped to take over his son's position, making a mental note to have a "chat" with the young man when they got home. Magnus said nothing as he left his father behind and exited the building into the mayor's garden where the crisp night air cleared his head.

Max smiled weakly at Evee. The incident would have been one of the funniest things he'd heard in a while, and probably would have had him rolling on the ground, if it weren't for what he had to tell Evee. He sighed and stared up at Evee's smiling face, it hurt him more than she would know to do this. He started to speak, stumbling at first but then continuing unhindered, "Evee, I'm... Well I mean I... I'm leaving Evee. I'm joining the army and heading for the battlefield. With the war going on, I'll finally be able to become a soldier, and fight for what's right... I'm sorry..." Max felt a sharp pang of regret in his heart; it was always his dream to become a soldier, but he didn't want to leave Evee to do it. But he had to, he told himself, her didn't want to, but he needed to. As good a friendship as they had, it could never be more than that, Evee was a high class aristocrat's daughter, and Max was the lowly son of a weapon smith. As much as he wanted it, they could never be together. He hung his head and said, quietly, "I leave tomorrow... I'm sorry Evee." With that, Max turned to leave, stopping to hear Evee's reaction before he would continue.

Max walked along the wall separating the high class area of the town from the lower class area. Long had he traversed this wall, as it led up to Evee's home. Max was headed to see Evee, but stopped when he saw a peculiar sight; a group of 20 men, clad in military uniforms were marching down the street in the opposite direction. Max stared for a few moments until they passed, and a man in a military dress uniform nearly knocked him over. He quickly apologized, but noticed the man's uniform and asked, "What's going on? Where are they going?" The man chuckled lightly and said, "Why they're headed to the front lines of course! Don't tell me you haven't heard? The tension between us and them finally broke! We're finally heading to war! If you're interested, you can join up to fight the good fight just down the road a ways. You'll see the big flag and army emblem on the outside a small building with about 20 people lined up outside." The man waved as he walked off, and Max made a slight detour before heading to Evee's. He had originally planned to tell her later that day but he never got the chance.
