Kenji quietly made his way through the forest. It was his favorite place to be, despite his unfortunate encounter with a Kalona there when he was a foal. Whenever he roamed through the forest, he felt invincible and hidden, and had become a master at concealing himself behind the thick bark of the deep green trees. He was strong and robust, but had no difficulty being elegant in his steps, and made little noise as he wandered through the forest.
Ever since he had lost the only thing that really ever mattered to him, he'd lost his purpose. He traveled alone, seeking the occasional comfort of a mare. The only thing he loved more than anything was being affectionate. But, there were only few in the masses of mares he's known that have really caught his eye. He is kind and compassionate, but he wouldn't be mistaken for one to settle.
Nevertheless, he enjoyed his solitude. He hadn't been able to find anyone that was interesting enough to keep up with his fast-paced travels and quick wit. He hadn't talked to anyone -especially girls- in such a long time he was beginning to think he might lose his natural charm. As quickly as the thought had come, he dismissed it. Him, losing his charm? Never! And no tropical rain could parade on his confidence either. He grinned to himself, happier than ever. The only thing missing was something he'd be utterly shocked to find in a forest as dense as this.

Dulce Periculum loved to travel. She loved to go new places, see new things, and learn about those new things and places. She was curious as could be and would gladly spend all day wandering about without any idea which way she was going next.

Her feet liked to wander, and just like her feet, so would her mind. She could think about a million things all at once, but... more often than not, that would leave her confused and make her restart the whole process a little more refined the next time around. She was going through one of these processes right then... until her foot caught on a root and she nearly fell flat on her face.

Stumbling to get her feet back under her so that she wouldn't tumble all the way to the ground, Dulce spent a few desperate seconds righting herself before she quickly turned back to face the culprit. Head low, eyes flashing angrily, she snarled at the root and followed it along the ground until she found the tree responsible for it. Having found it, she glanced at it just once, lowered her head a little more and scraped a hoof along the ground. Once, twice, three times... and then her head connected with the trunk, giving the entire tree a real good shake. It creaked and wobbled for a while in response, as Dulce stepped back, shook her head and replied. "Don't ever trip me again! Grrrrr...." She gave it an angry glare and added, "Next time you won't just creak! You'll downright cry for me to stop."

She huffed at it and was about to turn around when she heard the slightest of shuffles behind her. Her ears flicked back and she froze a moment, trying to figure out what it was.

The days were getting cooler, and the trees were starting to become bare by shedding their leaves onto the forest floor.

When Kenji noticed there was someone else in the forest with him, he hid behind a tree to watch. When he saw the gorgeous mare, his first impression was to go out and greet her. He'd always been overly friendly with mares. But this one was different. She stumbled over a branch, and started yelling furiously at the tree.

Eyes wide, he watched her curiously. He had to admit that he was quite intrigued. He'd never witnessed someone talk to a tree before! He couldn't help but chuckle quietly. She turned around and faced his direction. Ah crap! She must have heard me! Thoughts were rushing through his head as she scanned the forest for him. If he hadn't been so... well... green, she'd probably have spotted him by now.

Without hesitation, he stepped out from behind the tree and faced her. He planted his hooves strongly in the ground and proudly raised his head.
"Um, hello." He started. "I was over there and uh... and the tree told me to tell you he's very sorry."

You... YOU IDIOT He shouted at himself. Now she's going to think you're a lunatic! He frantically thought about how this could be fixed. He chuckled nervously. Sometimes, occassionally, he came across mares that had this effect on him. But he'd never met one like this one!

"I'm sorry miss, I meant to ask whether you're alright? He approached her with kind eyes, gracefully stepping onto the fallen leaves.

Turning around, she scanned the area and tried to look for the source of the noise she had heard, and just as she was about to deem herself crazy a Soquili emerged from behind a tree. He was the darkest green of yearlong-trees and he had lighter stripes upon his face and neck and as he stepped further out from behind the tree she could see his striped white stockings. Handsome was a thought that may have crossed her mind, that is, if she hadn't heard what he said.

'He's speaking for the tree?!?!' Her scowl changed into a snarl and without a second thought she leapt at him, transferring power from all four into her back legs so that she could spring the distance between them. Aiming for his shoulder and side, Dulce hoped to knock the stallion over as she ranted at him. "Was it you then, that made the tree's root trip me?!" She was not happy. If it had just been the tree all on its own, she would have left it at that. It didn't know any better, after all! But if this stallion was in league with it... telling it to do nasty things such as trip pretty mares while they mind their own business.... well... that was another story!

Her expression was angry, but crazy all the same. One with different colored eyes could never really get the 'sane' expression quite right. But as it always seemed to happen in this sort of state, Dulce's left eye shone bluer than ever.

Kenji was taken aback by the mare's hostility. This one is crazy! He heard himself thinking. Sure, talking to trees was somewhat cute, but attacking a stranger for cracking a harmless joke?! When he noticed her charge at him, he braced himself for attack, rooting his hooves strongly into the ground and tensing up his muscles. He had no intention of hurting this pretty little mare, but if she attacked him, she'd hurt herself because he was quite a sturdy and powerful stallion.

As she charged at him, he was able to see her face more clearly. Not having seen her up close earlier, he'd deduced that she was pretty. But now, seeing her eyes, he was stricken with awe and wonder. She had two different colored eyes! He couldn't help but stare at them, although this was probably the worst time ever to be oogling at a girl's eyes. The rest of her was quite beautiful too. She had lovely deep green hair, complimenting her coat color. He couldn't help but see a little of her in Syrea, but he shrugged off the comparison. Syrea wasn't crazy!

"Woah! Hold on! Don't go crazy you... crazy girl! What's the matter?" he argued, hoping to come out of this ordeal unscathed.

Regardless of his tensing and preparation of her impact, Dulce connected with the stallion. Perhaps she wasn't able to stop in time, or perhaps she just really wanted to prove that she could be a threat if she wanted to. Either way, she connected with his shoulder with her own perhaps nudging him back a step or so, perhaps not at all depending on his strength, but she almost rebounded off of him and came back to a standing position after a quick shuffle or two of her hooves. She stood directly in front of him with her head lowered so that her eyes were looking up at him from under her furrowed brow. But she held her ground there and didn't attack him again.

Her blue eye shining bright, Dulce attempted a question. "Did you tell the tree to trip me, or do you just understand them and hear their thoughts?" And she was dead serious. To her, it made complete sense either way. Why couldn't someone talk to the trees, or else understand and hear them talk? And who was to say trees couldn't talk! They moan and groan and creak, and that was practically talking!

She had calmed a bit, but was still ready to react if she needed to. This mare was definitely crazy, but she did have her own set of logic to follow, even if it did seem out of whack when she was like this.

Kenji felt a little bad for the mare that bounced right off him. Despite her futile attempt at hurting him, she seemed to hold her ground pretty well, and stared at him with angry eyes. A shiver traveled down his spine, and he was unsure if it was because she was so frighteningly intriguing or stunningly beautiful. Beauty aside, she was crazy!

After he listened to her question for him, he was even more intrigued, but slightly confused. He cocked his head to the side in wonder, because this girl actually seemed to believe he could converse with trees. He tried not to snicker as he refrained from making fun of her. Instead, he headed towards her, but stopped when he remembered the threatening looks she was giving him. If he told her he was just making a joke and that he in fact couldn't speak with trees, would she be relieved or insulted? He had to give it a shot.

"Miss, I can't talk to trees." There. He said it. He braced himself for another attack, tensing up and shutting his eyelids in case she tried to bite out his eyes. As much as he felt drawn to this mare, he had no idea what she would or wouldn't do. Clearly, someone had dropped her basket when she was young and destroyed the part of her mind that helps horses function normally

She waited patiently for an answer while he gathered his thoughts, and as she waited she began to cool down, her look of crazy almost began to dim and she even caught him looking at her... well... kinda funny. She couldn't place what his look meant, but he was looking at her like she was something nice to look at... or something. That alone helped to dim out her blue eye, and his answer helped too.

She relaxed and lifted her head up to it's normal height once more, to notice that he had tensed up and closed his eyes. Brown eye now shining, Dulce nudged the stallion playfully and then turned in a circle in a half play bow. A goofy smile on her face, the mare asked, "What's your name then? Mine's Dulce Periculum. But that's so long... most just call me Dulce!" Her tail twitched back and forth and her expression had changed into one of happiness, curiosity and playfulness. It was as if she was an entirely different soquili, friendly and inquisitive, when her brown eye was dominant. And weirdest of all, she acted as if nothing had happened moments ago, as if she hadn't just run into the stallion with angry intentions, as if she hadn't just told off the tree that had tripped her.

Kenji blinked, and plainly stared back in astonishment. He kept thinking the same words over and over again. An alarm was going off in his head warning him to stay away from this crazy mare. He was frozen with pure astonishment. Was this kind, gentle mare really the one that had just been talking to trees and accusing him of attacking her? He also couldn't help but notice her eye change color, which terrified him to say the least.

Every instinctual bone in his body was telling him to get as far away from her as possible. But something compelled him to stay. He had always been a kind, charming stallion. He would never leave a mare hanging and run off. Even if she were deranged, he'd be lured to flirt with her. It was in his nature, and his heart and soul were telling him to go for it. It was his turn to make a decision.

Growing up by the seaside, Kenji hated the water because he was afraid of it. His mother told him that to overcome a fear, he had to plunge deep into its heart. And although he was a grown stallion, he still took his mother's advice. Although he was terrified of this... thing, it was a horse, just like him - and a female one at that! And if this mare had a single normal bone in her body, she'd react to him if he were to try to seduce her. He'd made up his mind. It was all or nothing.

His shocked expression changed into a kind, nurturing face. His eyes softened and he un-tensed. He approached her, his motions fluid and without fear. And when he was close to her, he lowered his head a little and looked up at her with deep green eyes, showing his trust and respect for her. "It's nice to meet you Dulce. My name is Kenji."

If she were going to act like nothing had happened, so was he. But, when he was close to her like he was now, his acting turned into truth, as he began feeling things he didn't expect to. She was stunning up-close. And being near her made his blood warm and sent shivers running through him.

She stood up a little straighter as his expressions changed and he addressed her. It was nice to have all this attention, if she was being honest. She had grown up around mostly females, having two sisters and her father while she was a foal, and having mostly encountered females in her travels. That isn't to say she hadn't bumped into many males, or she hasn't seen any, because sure, she's seen many many soquili from afar, but of the few that she's stopped to talk to, females definitely prevail and males were still a little strange to her, sort of unknown. But she was definitely willing to find out more about them, should they give her the chance!

Truthfully, Dulce had met a fair share of males in her life but not while calm and sane. Most of her encounters with males have been of the dangerous variety where she had jumped into a fight or brawl, or between two jousting males, or between a kalona and skinwalker in a fight to the death. And though she came out of those situations alive and well (well, scuffed, and bleeding most cases, but well enough to walk away), they were memories that she simply did not have when her brown eye was dominant. To get those stories out of her, one would have to get her to talk when her blue eye shone bright, and that could prove to be a difficult task in itself.

"Kenji." She said his name slowly, tasting it, before adding with a nod, "I like that." With a swift turn on the spot and a glance thrown over her shoulder she beckoned him to follow as she began to walk back the way she had tread earlier. "Walk with me... if you can spare the time." Had she just winked at him? Well, that wouldn't be any stranger than her split-personality.

Kenji watched her reactions with delight, although a hint of confusion still lingered in the back of his mind. Nevertheless, he was beginning to find her more normal. Maybe she was messing with him and he was losing his mind too. Know knew.

He watched her turn her back to him and head back into the forest. He was gripped with a longing to follow her. Should he? Before he could decide, she looked back at him and asked him to walk with her. Should he? Should he?
Why not. Tantalized, he gulped and took a breather.
"As long as you don't try and kill me again," he joked around, trotting to catch up with her. He made his way to her side and glanced at her kindly, turning to face ahead of him. He'd never had a companion before, and he wasn't much of a talker. He'd rather just enjoy a pleasant mare's company.

When she was silent, he felt drawn to her even more.

He followed. Good. She was glad he had chosen to spend some more time with her. Finally a male that was willing to stay in her company! As for his joke, well she merely smirked back at him, a sly glint in that piercing blue eye, but no verbal response. Sometimes silence was as good as any conversation. She had slowly learned this over her travels. Watching a sunset mid-conversation just... drew the attention away from the beautiful painting of the sky. Besides, the stallion seemed content enough to stay silent, for the moment, why should she break the silence. She did not feel awkward, and thus just left it at that.

Vaguely, she wondered who he got to braid his tail. Her father's was done similarly to his. But it was just a passing thought as they continue to walk at a leisurely pace.

The forest wasn't unusual to her, in fact it was probably her favorite sort of terrain. There were always animals running around, or peeking out at you from around a tree. And it was always changing. Leaves sprouted, opened, changed color, and then fell. There was so much to learn, even here. Her thirst for knowledge was not a savage one, but it was what she sought happily. Did he yearn to learn, and to see and experience new things? She turned her head to look at Kenji, and she asked him simply. "What do you do?" Taking the opportunity to look him over once more. He had stripes. She liked that. Her coat had stripes, too. Wait, that was probably not very well explained. She added, "I travel. And learn. See, touch, smell new things." As if that could help explain what she meant, that would have been her reply to the very same question.
