Jin is a some-year-old man who wields a Katana, Wakizashi and spent the majority of his life training in kenjutsu dojos. Unlike his good friend Mugen, it is legal for him to carry a daisho (Sword pair), as he is of the samurai class. His swords have a lightning and twin-eyed design on the tsuba. He wears traditional hakama and gi in indigo blue patterned with a white diamond kamon made up of four small white diamonds. His kamon closely resembles that of the great Takeda Clan, leading to speculation that his family origins may be of nobility. He wears glasses but Mugen states that they are "fake", indicating Jin wears them as an accessory rather than actually needing them.
When he was 18, he was to be assassinated in his sleep by his sensei, Mariya Enshirou, at Kariya Kagetoki's insistence. However, Jin killed Mariya in self-defense and fled the dojo, becoming a ronin. His death is sought by former classmates and other fame-seekers. Mujushin was a real sword-fighting dojo, and Mariya Enshirou is known to have been the third master — although the circumstances of his death are unclear.
Jin is highly devoted to upholding Bushido and is in fact named after jin (benevolence), one of the seven samurai virtues. Jin is usually taciturn and unusually collected. He is an extremely skilled swordsman, using swift, refined, orthodox moves of the Mujushin Kenjutsu discipline, making him the perfect foil for Mugen.
Jin has confessed to Mugen that he has spent his entire life with no devotion to anyone. He lived only for his sword and no master; saying that the lords of that time have no sense of honor, only caring about self-preservation. But he seems to change during his travels with Fuu and Mugen, saying that they are his "first friends."

Shikai Abilities
- Ability One: Usugiri Slice うすぎり A very quick and precise cut of the sword. This ability has such extreme speed that it is often not visible before it is over, with the target not knowing it has been attacked.
Ability Two: Kibin Quick Cut きびん Gives Jin the ability to execute promptly a total of twenty lightning fast and power strikes within a count of four seconds.
Ability Three: Ayumikata Movement Reaction あゆみかた Jin's sword rings out when an opponent is within a certain range, coming in from any angle, above or even beneath, it communicates to him, allowing for movement to avoid the opponent entirely. This technique, however, is not always accurate and depends on the skill level of his opponent.
Ability Four: Kasoku Acceleration State かそく Gives Jin the ability to instantly rebound after his sword has been deflected by an opponent. Gives him the ability to instantly stabilize himself when fighting a more powerful opponent and is being thrown back.
Ability Five: Kuukiburasuto Air Cut くうきぶらすと An extremely powerful cut that when executed, not only has the power to cut down large strong structures, but it creates a large gust of wind as its aftermath.

Bankai Abilities
- Ability One: Idou Flash Shift いどう Combined with Shunpo, Jin is able to evade fast opponents accurately, almost 0 of the time. Instead of a regular Shunpo, where one vanishes and and reappears, Jin is completely visible as he executes the technique, though this ability is far beyond in strength to to that Ability.
Ability Two: Meikai Hades finally めいかい Using his Wakizashi, Jin places his Uchigatana in his left hand, his Wakzashi, the right, curving either one into his forearms, he rushed the opponent mid-level, slicing them, either cutting them in half horizontally, or severally damaging them.
Ability Three: Kengeki Sword Play けんげき Allows for extremely fast, powerful and completely accurate sword strikes that let off powerful bursts of spiritual pressure when swords clash. Jin uses both his Uchigatana and Wakizashi, so the ability to block becomes extremely difficult but not impossible.
Ability Four: Ausutoraiku Arc-Strike あーくすとらいく Jin is able to execute one hundred accurate and powerful sword strikes within ten seconds. His arms move so fast that they become less than blurs.

Shinigami Techniques
- Technique 1:
Heightened Swordsman Skills: Jin trained, from the time he was a child, in the way of a Samurai, learning from the top four in all of Japan. He's shown to have extremely powerful strikes, accurate, and well placed. His skill with a sword is his life, therefore, he's among the most talented in Seireitei.
Technique 2:
Spiritual Force: Jin, though being a master of swordsmanship, is not adequate in the way of spiritual pressure. He's shown to have a normal amount, but his peak is nothing threatening. Jin has recently devoted himself to train in this aspect.
Technique 3:
Hand-to-hand Combatant Expert: Along with his mastery with the sword, Jin is also highly skilled in Hakuda, being able to be on the same level with some above his level of rank. Though not liking to fight without his sword, Jin has no lack in this regard.
Technique 4:
Kido: Jin has absolutely no knowledge in Kido, thinking it more of a disgrace for a warrior to use such trickeries in battle. He's shown no interest in learning anything about Kido.
Technique 5:
Heightened Intelligence: Jin, though coming off quiet and untalkitive, Jin is extremely intelligent, not only in worldly affairs, but in tactics in battle, able to quickly and accurately respond to a situation when time is not generous.
Technique 6:
Extra-Sensory Perception: Jin is capable of noting his surroundings and that which lie within without looking around very much, having an heightened sense of hearing. When he closes his eyes, he can pick up on more as he concentrates.
