Air. Air would be nice right about now. Betula was trotting at first, but this desire was coming over him strongly, making him break into a canter and shortly up to a full-out gallop. It was something of a wonder that he didn't crash into any trees on his way out of the forest. Being a cerynei was probably the only reason he could weave in and out of those trees as deftly as he did, and it was something he was grateful for. He couldn't imagine being a big heavy draft, unable to come to a stop in a split second... he would have shivered if he had really been thinking about it, but that wasn't all that was occupying his mind. No, there was much more on his mind.

When he broke the treeline he kept running, eyes wide and sense of direction mostly non-existent. All he knew was that he needed to get away from the trees he normally loved and lived in. They had become scary, looming and claustrophobic. Out here in this open field he began to feel better, but he kept running until all of that anxiety had worked it's way out of his system and allowed him to calm. With the calmness settling in, his pace began to slow and he eventually came to a complete stop atop a hill with particularly long grass. With autumn in full-bore the grass had begun to turn yellow, but it was still soft, and it called to him. Dropping to the ground, heart racing, Betula rolled over in the tall blades and lay on his back, looking up at the blue sky and it's wandering white clouds up above. This was the perfect place for him to think. Here, he could think, here he could breathe.

User ImageBlossom was lost. Again. Really, her sense of direction left a great deal to be desired. But that was fine, because there was no such thing as an adventure where everything went right. The fun always came when things went wrong. For example, if she hadn't been lost, she wouldn't have seen the odd ceryni shoot out of the forest as though his tail was on fire. She was on the hill when he came racing out, and watched him curiously. Right up until she realized that he was coming toward her.

Instinctively, she scrambled to the side, a little out of his way, and ducked down, blending smoothly with the tall grass. The fact that the grass was almost as tall as she was helped. She continued watching him curiously as he stopped atop the hill, not too far from her, and collapsed. Creeping forward a bit, she saw him roll over. She waited for him to get up and run on, but whatever was bugging him seemed to have gone away.

Well.

That was... odd.

Curiosity got the better of her and she continued creeping forward until she could poke her head into his line of sight. "What'd you do that for?" she asked, without preamble. Sometimes her curiosity was a bit too blunt.

He began to breathe more calmly, in and out, in and out, in aaaand out, iiiiiin aaaand ooooout. There. He had settled his heart and was finally beginning to relax when a brown nose made it's way into his line of sight with a question attached. His head jerked to the side at the intrusion, surprised at not being out here alone.

He squinted his eyes in disbelief for a moment before he could react. Slowly he replied to the usdia, "...Do what?" As far as he was concerned he hadn't done anything wrong, unless he supposed he was invading this usdia's territory or something.... Had he rolled over something that was hers? Did he scare off her prey? She didn't look like the hunting type to him, but then again... he could only see her head and part of her neck. Who knew what the other end of this pony looked like!

He had been sure he was all alone out here, for as he was running, he didn't see a single movement that wasn't caused by the wind or his own movements. But now that he opened his eyes to their normal position, he saw that this usdia could have easily been here all along as the blades of grass made her almost impossible to see! They were almost as tall as she was! Well, in truth, he wasn't that much taller than these blades... which may have had something to do with why he chose here to settle down. He was trying to hide. Rather unsuccessfully.

"Come shooting out of the forest like that," Blossom elaborated. She didn't pay much attention to his seeming surprise at seeing her. She'd known he hadn't noticed her, so she would have been more interested if he hadn't reacted to her sudden appearance. He did seem to be calming down, though.

She inched a bit closer.

"Oh..." his eyes wandered away from the usdia and made their way back to the sky up above. A particularly fluffy cloud tried to scurry across the great blue stretch as he fiddled with his thoughts and tried to put them into some sort of sensible order. "I..." Another pause, still not looking at the usdia, but he could feel her inching closer. That was ok, he deemed, he didn't feel any threat from her. "...I just had to run. No space to think among those trees."

He glanced over at her, but only for a split second, trying to see how she would react to something that sounded so silly. But it was the truth.

She considered that solemnly for a moment before looking back the way he had come. After studying the trees, she nodded. "Yeah, I can see that. They're packed pretty close together. Are you claustrophobic? Or just needed air?"

Blossom could understand the need for change. It was the reason she had gone traveling to begin with. After awhile, if you didn't move, things got boring and familiar. Not that there was anything wrong with familiar, mind. It just wasn't interesting.

"Claustrophobic?" He looked at her and then almost smiled. But not quite. "No. Not claustrophobic. Just needed to think." His eyes almost went dreamy at this point - he was obviously thinking about something else.

All of a sudden his head snapped back over to the usdia though, and he stumbled over his words, "Did I get in the way?" And his eyes look her over again, this time with questions within them. He was trying to figure out what she was doing out here in the grasses, what he may have interrupted so rudely.

"In the way of what?" she tilted her head curiously, wondering what it was he thought he'd been interrupting. She hadn't been doing anything when he came charging out of the forest. If she had been, she would have said so first. But that wasn't quite as important as satisfying her curiosity over that dreamy look. "What were you thinking about?"

"Of.... whatever..." he lifts his head and looks around the area as best he can without getting up, "... you were doing..?" He raises one of his brows, a questioning look. Betula wondered what she had been doing in fact, and why here? Was there a reason for this very spot or had it been a random act of fate?

What had he been thinking about? "Hmmm.." a dark grumble escaped him and he looked back to the sky, expression grim. "Unpleasant memories." And that is all he said on the matter.
PostPosted: Sun Nov 21, 2010 8:55 am

"You didn't get in the way," Blossom assured him with a bright smile. She ignored his questioning look, since she deemed the answer to his unspoken question both uninteresting and obvious. Instead, she jumped straight to his next comment. "Unpleasant memories?"

He was glad to see her smile brightly, finding that a reassuring sign that he really hadn't interrupted anything and she hadn't just been acting polite. But her reaction of interest in his thoughts was rather unsettling.

Why was someone so interested in finding out what he was thinking about? Most others would just leave it at that, and yet here he was being... interrogated, by a nice little usida about his... unpleasant memories. A shiver ran down his spine as they were brought back to mind and he scowled, more at the memories than at the usdia. But his answer was a simple one, a guard of sorts that was trying to keep his mind from delving back into said memories.

"Yes."
PostPosted: Sun Nov 21, 2010 5:47 pm

"So... you were running from bad memories?" Blossom summed up, connecting dots that only she could seem to see. She was curious what those memories were, but if they were truly horrible memories, she wasn't going to poke at any emotional wounds. At least not until she knew him better.

Relieved that the usdia seemed to understand, he turned back to look at her once more and nodded. "The mind can be a horrible place." Why else would one remember horrible memories that made one want to cry? Why would one's mind continue to run that same terrifying images over and over without mercy? No, the mind could be a very very dark and miserable place.

Though Blossom had few dark memories of her own, she agreed that the mind could be a terrible place. Why, she didn't need personal experiences to come up with horrific mental scenes. Her imagination was very vivid. Still, it seemed to her that one didn't have to suffer if they didn't want to. "Do you have good memories?"

His ears perked up and so did his entire mood, it seemed. Good memories? He could definitely pick out a few, and others that were enjoyable at the very least, if not classified as 'good'.

He nodded, "Yes," with a small smile forming on his face he continued, "Yes, those I could dwell on without having to run out of the stuffy forest." He looked over at Blossom and bowed his head slightly, though with the way he was lying it may have looked funny or clumsy, "Thank you."
