I prefer to play flute.
Piccolo is so high pitched. It's a lot better to play on the marching field (provided all your piccs are in-tune) because the high pitch cuts through the loud brass, and it's easier to hold.
I don't necessarily understand your dilemma though; is this other girl wanting to play piccolo in concert band or marching band or something?

Everyone seems to think flutes aren't heard.... Why? In my skool band we have 6 flute players. If you want to be heard you can be heard. Piccolo is extremely high-pitched to the point it can hurt your ears. I recomend Flute.

If you want to be heard, piccolo. Otherwise, flute.

In my regard I would definately try to play them both. You see, if you have the chance of learning both at the same level, just do it ! Imagine this situation: There is one orchestra looking for people to play at a concert which has pieces both for piccolo and for flute. If you know how to play them both, they will definetely prefer you, since it will become "cheaper" to them. On the other hand you'll win more and be able to play at that concert.
... For much you mess up, just don't give up, if it is something you love to do smile

i vote flute. i don't play either, but coming from another band kid, i can't think of anyone who likes piccolos except the flute section...(this one time we did this band-challenge thing for fleet week in SF and we played that one march you always associate with patriotic-ness, i forget the name, and we had FOUR piccolos playing the part that sounds like birds, and when they had sectionals....*shudder*...you know that joke "how do you tune two piccolos? shoot one."? well those sectionals i heard made me have this one: "how do you tune 4 piccolos? shoot ALL OF THEM." lol)

You should do flute. The piccolo is extremely hard to play, and it can potentially make you go deaf.
