This is a private roleplay between Sakngea [lungrot] and Xiu [Honeybii].

Setting:

At Sakn's home.

After Xiu passes out, Sakn takes him home. They take the boat out and have a colorful conversation after an awkward family dinner.
PostPosted: Thu Oct 28, 2010 2:29 am

It was late by the time Sakn had stumbled home, the small boy held carefully in his arms (his excuse was his shoulder was sore and it was better to keep his friends from having all the blood rushing to his head), and when he pushed through the doors his mother was waiting for them in the front area, a glare marring her beautiful face. Her mouth was open, ready to berate her son for having not shown up all day. She was ready to yell about how worried she had been and how she had sent his father out looking for him. She was angry, but when she saw the small boy wrapped in Sakn's arms, her mouth snapped shut.

"What happened?" she asked.

Sakn filled his mother in on what had happened, and watched as her face melted from angry to worried to maternal as she combed the hair from Xiu's face. They had laid him to rest in Sakngea's bedroom, wrapped up under his blankets (they were itchy and old, but they had always made Sakn feel better, he hoped they did the same for Xiu). When the boy didn't wake through the night, nor through most the next day, Sakn found himself worrying a little.

What if Xiu was stuck in a limbo, unable to come back from his deep sleep? What if it was all his fault? Sakn berated himself as he paced about the house. He hadn't slept more then a few hours after getting home, and his hair was messy and his eyes tired.

Sothy finally came over in the late afternoon and checked on the monk child. Sakngea eyed her as she walked into the room. She was so creepy he was kinda afraid that Xiu would wake up with that dark, saggy face right next to his and it would scar him for life.

First she checked the boys pulse, tsk'ing under her breath as she moved on to check his breathing, temperature and other such things that Sakn really didn't know much about.

"'Ee'll be fine," she reassure the worried redhead and his just-as-worried mother, "He's just sleepin'," she then eyed the young boy and added in her usual croaky old-lady tone, "Bein' lazy, as well."

She then continued to pinch Xiu's nose shut.

"OLD LADY WHUT Y'THINK Y'UR DOIN'!?" Sakn exclaimed as he watched the senile old bat try to suffocate his friend. And he would have hit her too if Sothy hadn't given him the evil eye.

"I'm jus' wakin' the lazy boy up!" she snapped before patting the boy's cheek sharply. He had slept long enough, and he would need to eat. "Bopha, dear, make something simple tonight. Perhaps a soup," she mused as she continued to pat the boys cheek and pinch his nose. Bopha nodded and bowed before exiting the room to go cook something up for their unexpected guest.

Meanwhile, Sakn glared and stood just behind Sothy, hoping the crazy witch knew what she was doing.

The first thing Xiu vaguely realized was that he was really, really comfortable. He was warm and cuddled deeply into his blankets. It was nice, but then, why hadn’t Master woken him up yet? Surely it was well past dawn and those errands wouldn’t run themselves. And why was he feeling so suddenly itchy? Xiu frowned, still sleeping but on the cusp of consciousness.

He was starting to here garbled voices now. Unfamiliar garbled voices. Gods, he just wanted to keep sleeping. Xiu would have done just that if his nose hadn’t suddenly been grabbed. For a moment, he forgot to breath as he raged in silence at the indignity of having his nose grabbed. That’s when the face tapping started. Gasping in shock and for a breath of air, Xiu jack knifed up, nearly taking out the old woman’s chin in the process. He looked about, breathing a little heavy at the sudden wake up.

Oh, hello grandmother.” Xiu greeted politely. It didn't quite register that it was the granny who had pinched his nose as he blearily blinked and rubbed at his eyes as he tried to shake the last of the sleepy cobwebs from his brain. Xiu's eyes widened after a moment as he looked at the granny more clearly. Wait.

GAH!” He wailed in shock before seeing Sakn. “What? Sakn? What?” Xiu babbled. “Oh gods, Master is going to kill me. I dead. I am so dead. I’m going to be a corpse!

At that, Xiu flopped back down into the blankets with a moan, rubbing his face into the pillows childishly. They smelled like Sakn. He blushed pink and realized Sakn must’ve carried him all the way home after their fight! Xiu sat up again, panic derailed as he looked up at his friend. Granted, he was still looking a little crazed with his hair all flicked up in the back.

Sakngea are you OKAY?” The readhead was looking a little tired himself and Xiu couldn’t help but worry all over again.
PostPosted: Thu Oct 28, 2010 2:01 pm

"Aaaha," the old lady crowed as she leaned back when Xiu shot up. Her face was broken into a smile that was missing several teeth, and her clasped her gnarled hands together when the boy spoke so politely to her. "Finally," she started before coughing slightly, "a boy who knows how to respect a woman," she laughed then and slowly stood.

She was old and her bones were tired, but she shooed Sakn off when the boy attempted to help her stand. "I can do it myself, boy," she groused, her thin dark hair falling into her face before she pushed it back again. Two pale pink eyes stared at Xiu for a minute, though when he just continued to babble she tsk'd and turned on her heel. "He's fine now, so I will go help your mother. You two best wash up for dinner."

With that she disappeared, and Sakn stood awkwardly there as his friend pressed his face into the pillow. "Y'almast were a corpse," he said glumly in remark to the boys worries about his master, and would have said more on the subject (like how where the boys master could shove it for all Sakn cared), but already Xiu was refocused on him.

And questioning his health.

Sakn huffed, face turning pink under his scales. He hated being babied or worried over, it just wasn't manly at all. "I'm fine," the redhead harrumphed before a yawn over took him. Which just irritated him more. "How 'bout you, Xiu," green eyes turned to focus on Xiu again after the yawn had finished, "Y'did somethin' pure crazy yes'erday. I thought's y'was dead when y'didn't wake up this mornin'."

He didn't even bother to hide the worry(or anger) in his voice, because Xiu had done something crazy, and it had upset the fisherboy. Sakn didn't have many friends as it was, and to lose one because of something stupid upset him a lot. He was allowed to worry about his friends (even if he hated them worrying about him). Though he did step in and smack the boy (lightly) on the head. "Thas for worryin' me."

Xiu paused in his hyperactive talking and finally stood. He hadn’t missed the yawn or the way that Sakn’s voice held the heaviness of worry. For the first time Xiu realized that he should have thought before he acted. Granted there wasn’t a lot of time to think, but he should have considered Sakn’ feelings on the whole ghost fighting business. Was the redhead’s sleepiness due to his worry? Xiu wasn’t sure.

The bonk in the head cause Xiu to smile apologetically up at Sakn. “I’m sorry Sakn.” He said sincerely, biting his lip and looking at his feet. Simply knowing he had caused distress upset him. Finally, Xiu looked back up at Sakn, debating if he’d get punched for a hug. Real men hugged, right?

Determined, Xiu rushed in and hugged Sakn tightly around the waist. He didn’t linger or make it mushy. It was just to let himself know that Sakn was there and well. To distract Sakn further from the more than likely unwanted contact, Xiu reach up and yanked one of the boy’s braids lightly.

And that’s for worrying too much. I‘m well and so‘re you it seems. It worked out, right?” Xiu said seriously, looking at his best friend. The silence that followed was punctuated by Xiu’s loudly growling stomach and then his laughter.

We should probably wash up for dinner.” Xiu continued to chuckled.
PostPosted: Thu Oct 28, 2010 4:30 pm

Sakngea had not expected the hug. Definitely did not expect the hug. And if he had expected it, he would have punched Xiu as soon as the boy came in range. But it wasn't obvious, and he hadn't expected it. So when the little monk boy wrapped his arms around Sakn's waist, the boy raised his arms up in the air and his face twisted in confusion.

And then it was done, and Sakn would deny vehemently that he had been okay with such contact, but in reality, it was nice to know that his friend was okay. It was reassuring, in a strange way. And while he scowled when Xiu tugged on his braids (damn it, what was with people and pulling his hair!?), the frown didn't reach h twisted is eyes.

"I wusn' worryin' that much," Sakn groaned, crossing his arms, and then nodded lightly. It had worked out, and that, he supposed, was all that mattered. "Maybe y'ain't as scrawny as i though'," Sakn teased before his eyes focused on Xiu's rumbling stomach.

He found himself laughing as well, and when Xiu mentioned washing, the boy nodded and motioned for his friend to follow him. While the fisherboys home wasn't fancy as some of the house in the City, it was warm and friendly. Sakn showed him where the washing room was, and then left the boy to clean himself up.

Once Xiu exited the small room, they moved to the dining area, and Sakn gave his mother a light peck on the cheek (with the most utterly reluctant look on his freckled face) before moving to sit at the old wooden table. His father, a large-bellied man with the same green eyes as his son and short-cropped blue-green hair, nodded to his son, casually asking him about his day and starting a story about his latest fishing trip when he noticed the Xiu.

"'Oo's dis?" the man asked, raising a brow.

"He's mah friend, da," Sakn responded before motioning for xiu to sit in the seat next to him. "Xiu," he pointed at the boy, then motioned to his father and mother, "This is mah ma, Bopha," the red-headed woman smiled gently at Xiu, "And this is mah da, Noreaksey."

"Xiu?" Nor mused, stroking his heavy beard as he stared at the boy, "Das a strange name iffin I ever heard a strange name befur!" he laughed after though, and it was obvious that the older man meant no harm in his teasing.

"Aaaah, y'not going to introduce me then, I see," the old, cranky voice was that of Sothy, who was seated to Bopha's left. Sakn, who had turned his back to them to speak to Xiu, stiffened slightly and made at face at Xiu before turning to motion to the old woman.

"And this is Sothy. My mentor," he said lamely before moving to load himself a bowl of soup and a warm wheat bun.

"Sakn," his mother groused, slapping the boys had before he could grab anything, "let your friend eat first! Don't be so rude," she warned, shaking a finger at the boy as Sakn glared and held his hand to his chest.

I ain’t--I mean I am not scrawny!” Xiu shot back simply for the sake of keeping up with things. A few minutes later he felt clean and somewhat refreshed after scrubbing his face and combing his hair. After that, he happily followed Sakn to the table. He paused though suddenly feeling awkward when he came under the scrutiny of all those present. He stalled, not taking the seat beside Sakn just yet. It was rude to sit at an unknown table full of unknown people after all.

Xiu followed the introductions and then bowed lowly. “It’s nice to meet you all. Thank you for sharing your meal with me.” He greeted formally before finally taking his seat beside Sakn. Despite immediately having his name poked out, something that was rather familiar, Xiu found himself smiling and laughing with Sakn’s father, simply because the man had a likable air about him. He even agreed with the man that yes, it was an odd name, but then, his mother was an odd woman.

Sakn’s face when Sothy made herself known almost made Xiu laugh, but he held it in, just like he did when Sakn got smacked for reaching for the food. “Oh, it’s alright.” Xiu said, giving Sakn an apologetic smile. He did reach to serve himself though, hoping to get everything moving while he thanked Bopha profusely and complimented her cooking. Xiu flushed as his stomach growled loudly. The food really did smell delicious.

Miss Sothy,” Xiu said suddenly, right in the middle of breaking his bread in half, “you’re a priestess. That's what Sakn meant by his mentor, right?’ He guess, thinking rightly that the aura of the soul conduit was coming from her.
PostPosted: Thu Oct 28, 2010 11:38 pm

As soon as Xiu had food on his plate, Sakn dove in, filling himself up on soup and bread, eagerly guzzling it all down. He hadn't eaten since the ramen Xiu and him had had the day before. While his stomach didn't speak like Xiu's, it had been pinched and angry all day.

The redhead was so busy chowing down that he barely took notice to Xiu praising his mother. If he hadn't been stuffing his face, he would have warned the boy. Never(never, ever, ever) compliment Bopha; her head would get too big, and she would attempt to cook something extravagant and horribly distasteful, claiming that it was something famous from the city. And Sakn would have to be the taste-tester.

He didn't even hear her nearly squeal in joy as the small boy praised her cooking, and definitely didn't notice the look of fear on Noreaksey's face as his wife promised to try out a recipe she had been saving, just for Xiu. If he had heard his mother, his face would have been just as forlorn as his fathers.

Sakn did hear Xiu question his mentor, though, and groaned. He really hated people knowing about all this spiritual stuff. When the villagers had found out, they had treated him like a freak. It wasn't often people around here were found to be conduits, and even rarer so to be capable of communicating with the dead. Sothy herself worked with living souls. It was a topic that made Sakngea uncomfortable.

But as he was currently full of food and still piling more into his mouth, he let it slide this one time. Xiu worked with ghosts himself, it seemed, so Sakn figured it wouldn't be awkward between them afterward.

"Aaaah, so y'noticed, I am indeed a priestess. This village's only priestess, t'be exact" the old woman croaked as she ripped a piece of bread apart between her teeth. She quickly chewed and swallowed before setting the other half her bun down in her soup bowl. Her pink eyes focused creepily on the boy, reading him, or so it seemed. "Sakngea here," she waved a gnarled hand at the boy, "He's one of them boys who can see the spirits," she raised a brow then and added, "Just like you, i'seems. Aaaand, i's my job to train him to be a real priest."

Sakn snorted at the comment, ignoring his mother and Sothy's dirties glares. He did not want to become some froufrou priest. It just didn't seem right to him. Not that he was gunna quit or anything, because real men don't quit. They either succeed or die trying.

"She ain't that great'a mentur either, iffin' y'ask me." Sakn groused, but quickly shut up when his mother reprimanded him and waved the soup ladle in his direction. His father sat silently the whole time, eyes never leaving his soup bowl. He disliked this whole spirit-speak. It bothered him to think his son would not carry on the family business, but instead be out talking to the dead instead of working with the living.

Xiu was utterly unaware of the sin he’d just committed. He liked talking to Bopha to be honest, mostly because he’d never really been around a mother much before and he felt like she was a really good mother. So, he chatted away, eager to see how her new recipe turned out. And while he ate a bit more delicately than Sakn, he ate with just as much gusto. He was startled to find that he was absolutely starving. Fighting ghosts was apparently hard work. Well his stomach was gurgling away happily now as Xiu took seconds, slowly gaining on thirds.

Sothy did suddenly give Xiu the creeps. And that was saying something considering that he played with dead souls most of the time. There was just something about her eyes and he almost wished he’d held his tongue. Everyone seemed a little tense suddenly anyways and Xiu wondered if he’d put his foot in it. Again.

I see.” Xiu replied, scratching his nose thoughtful as he searched for something to add. “Um…you should meet with my Master some time. I’m sure he’d love to meet you.” He finished lamely, knowing what he said was true. Master Ziye did like meeting other priests and priestesses. Thankfully, Sakn’s snort saved Xiu from having to say anything else and the youth covered his mouth to stop a giggle from escaping.

She’s an elder Sakn. Of course she’s good.” He told his friend, giving him a playful shoulder punch. Xiu wasn’t being a suck up, truly believing that elders had much to offer everyone. This could be very much be due to the fact that he lived with a group of celibate monks who were mostly over the age of fifty.

Smiling and pleased, Xiu went back to eating his dinner, humming in appreciation.
PostPosted: Fri Oct 29, 2010 1:35 am

"Good at poisonin' mah son's mind," Noreaksey growled as soon as Xiu finished speaking, his eyes daring to meet Sothy's for only a moment before he glanced around the table. It was obvious how on edge the big-bellied man was; the tightened muscles, the cold face and the hands that held onto the edge of the table.

When Bopha made an indignant sound, embarrassed with her husbands scathing remark, the man stood and gave his wife a kiss on the cheek before excusing himself to his bedroom. Sakn watched the man exit and his face turned a violent shade of red under his scales. Another reason they rarely spoke of his training was due to how upset it all made his father.

"Well boy," Sothy mused as she slowly stood, her old muscles aching, "I'seems I've made myself an unwelcome guest here," she moved to Bopha's side, patting the woman on the shoulder and giving a small smile when the redheaded fishers wife patted her gently on the hand. "Sakngea," she continued as she moved around the table to leave, "Y'got a good friend in this boy. Loyal t'the bone. Don' mess it up. And Xiu," she turned her eyes back onto the young monk boy, "tell your master I would love to meet him, but I fear my bones are too weak to travel and time is too short for me these days. Perhaps in another life."

While her words were said casually and even with a hint of laughter, a joke on her elderly age, it left the room tense again. Bopha gave an awkward laugh and stood as the elderly sage left, "Well," she coughed, "Sakngea, take your friend outside. It has been nice out, and the evening is just upon us. Show him the docks and get him some fresh air," she winked at Xiu then, "It'll help him to grow, breathing in this fresh sea air."

Sakn looked at his mom, realizing she had just offered him a free ticket out of dishes (which was usually his job) and stood so quickly his chair screamed across the wooden floor (to which is mother glared), and then motioned for Xiu to follow before rushing out of the dining area and through the front doors.

He could barely see Sothy in the fading light, and just glimpsed a shadow moving, and once Xiu followed him outside, he started walking, aiming for the docks where all the fishers in his village tied their boats. It was a favorite place of his, and the sea always made him feel better. Perhaps it would do the same from Xiu.

For a few minutes there was silence, and then Sakn sighed. "Sorry 'bout awl that. M'da gets upset about this spirit business. I'm d'only child, and he fears what'll 'appen once he's gone'n all. T'the business and the house," the fisher boy scratched the back of his head awkwardly then. He had never been good at apologies, and rarely handed them out.

"Any way!," he started, to change the subject in hopes that it would deter Xiu from responded and asking questions, "Lemme show ya our village. It ain't as big as d'city, but i's home t'me."

It was a relief to be all but hustled from the house. Sakn’ father had gone downright surely and Sothy suddenly scared Xiu to death. The woman’s words had sent a shudder rippling up his spin, making him shiver violently. He was glad when she left and was glad when Sakn had all but left from his chair. Too stunned by the sudden change in atmosphere to even laugh, Xiu bid Bophy goodbye and thanked her away for the meal.

Outside, the youth was running to catch up with Sakn’s long strides as he breathed out a sigh to calm himself. Xiu didn’t speak for long moments, merely following Sakn towards where he assumed the docks would be. Already he could smell the sweet tang of the sea, loving the scent that reached his nose. It was definitely soothing and Xiu was glad to have gotten out of the house though he tried not to show it. He made a note never to comment on the dead in Sakn’s house.

Xiu startled slightly when the silence was broken and he looked up at Sakn with big eyes that were a bit worried. He was beginning to understand what it meant when Sakn apologized. “I…” Xiu bit his lip, hand already poised to touch Sakn’s shoulder in a soothing manner. Slowly that hand lowered.

I mean, I’d love to see your village Sakn.” Xiu stated brightly, daringly brushing passed Sakn to turn on his heel so he could walk backwards and face his friend at the same time. “You’ll have to show me which boat you work on too. Okay?”
PostPosted: Mon Nov 01, 2010 1:22 am

Sakn didn't even notice the awkward pause and slightly raised hand, though he was quick to notice Xiu bumping against him.

His scowl, while still a scowl in the end, lacked the usual 'Sakngea' ferocity, and he couldn't help the twitch of a smile that curled on his lips as Xiu brushed him before spinning back to talk to him. It was comical the way his whole body bounced as he took each backwards step. But he still scowled, because, y'know, no one pushes Sakn around.

"Of c'urse y'gunna see the boat!" he cheerfully roared, glad to see that the unsettling situation (and his awkward apology!) had been left unmentioned. Sakn wasn't one who dealt well with emotional strife; it often left him floundering, uncertain as to how he should react. He then playfully ruffled the boy's hair, large hand clasping easily over the top of Xiu's head, making it easy to muss it up.

After a few more minutes of teasing, harassing and boyish fun, Sakn noticed he could smell the sea, and inhaled deeply as they came upon the small, creaky old docks that lined the edge of his village.

While these docks did not compare to the larger docks near the City, they had a charm to them and Sakn felt himself ease completely as the soft dirt roads of the town transitioned into the water-worn wood of the docking area. He loved the smell of fish and brine and sea water that coated this place, the wonderful freshness of the salty water.

"So, these be d'docks!" the redheaded teen exclaimed, gesturing proudly at the long narrow docks (lined with many boats, all fishing boats. No fancy sailboats here!) as if he was presenting someone famous. "Aaaand dat," he said, pointing at a large boat, painted a bright blue with stripes of yellow and red. The nets were hung high to keep them out of the water and peoples way, and it floated handsomely on the water, "Tha's mah boat. We cawl'er 'Lazybones'."

Sakn turned his eager, bright eyes back on Xiu then and motioned to the boat. "Wanna git on? We c'uld go sail a bit b'fore it gets to dark," It had been a while since Sakn had gotten to visit the sea. Lately he had been too busy with Sothy and his mother. "I promise I won' take's out too far," he added, hoping this would help to convince his friend to go with him.

The heavy atmosphere that had seemed to linger since morning finally lifted and Xiu found himself smiling. He smiled until his cheeks dimpled and his eyes sparkled. Sakn was happy again. No more worry or fretting. They were away from the talk of ghosts and already heading out for another adventure. A fun one that had Xiu laughing, especially when Sakn ruffled his hair.

Hey, hey!” He cried, pushing away Sakn’s hand. “Keep that big bear paw away from me!” Xiu didn’t mind too terribly though as he fixed his hair back. Anything to get his friend in high spirits again. With a few more playful shoves, the scent of the ocean grew stronger, finally making Xiu turn to view the glorious vastness of the sea.

The day was absolutely perfect. The sky was blue and clear, almost as clear as the water. The waves weren’t too rough or too soft around the fishing boats and pilings, making the scene almost picture perfect. The urge to be out in the middle of water with nothing for miles was a compelling force and Xiu was filled with the need to give into it.

It’s gorgeous Sakn!” Xiu blurted loudly in his excitement as he turned to his friend. “Let’s go, let’s go!” He didn’t tug on Sakn’s hand, but his did grab the male’s sleeve for a moment to give it a quick pull before he was dashing over to the blue boat and jumping lithely to the deck. “C’mon Sakn. Hurry up! I’ve never been on a boat like this before. You can take me as far as you want!”

All bright eyed and bushy tailed, Xiu ran to the prow of the boat, leaning over slightly to peer into the water. Fish! He could see tiny, silver fish. He laughed again, turning to make sure Sakn was hurrying properly. This was going to be fun!

Sakn hadn't expected such quick acceptance, but enjoyed how eager Xiu was. Eager was always good! With a laugh, the taller boy jogged over to the boat and hopped on as easily as Xiu. It was like watching a small, excited dog, and the redhead grinned wildly; leaving his friend to watch the fish scatter and reform around the rocking ship.

"Excited much, eh?" he teased, ruffling the boys hair once more before getting them ready to go.

It was quick and easy for Sakn to untie the boat and get her moving, and soon the boys found themselves gliding out to sea. The waves slapped the sides of the fishing boat, and a slight wind kissed the sails. The sun was dropping into the west, and the green sea was tinged with ripples of light at the horizon, as the docks and coast blurred and faded. With each mile that separated them from the land, Sakn felt his body ease.

The sea was his other half, and the closer he was to her, the better the boy felt. It was obvious from the look on his face and the way his lips curled into a smile.

It wasn't much longer before the fisherboy threw down an anchor to stop the boat from moving much, and moved to stand beside the shorter teen. "So, whutcha think?" he said, breathy and excited, his mouth tingling with the taste of the salty waters. This was Sakngea's true home, and he was eager to see what Xiu thought.

"The'say there's a sea monsta' out here," he added, because it was something is father always told him when he was a kid. A fascinating fact about the dark blue waters; so deep that even a sea monster could hide easily.

Not THAT excited.” Xiu chided with a chuckled, batting at Sakn’s hand with a slight blush. Secretly though, Xiu really was excited. It wasn’t every day that he got to go out on a boat. A real boat anyways. He didn’t count the small merchant rafts that lined the canals as true water faring vessels. This was what real sailing was. It was beautiful out on the ocean and the youth stood at the railing simply soaking up the sun and the wonderful smell of the sea as the wind caressed his face.

Xiu would have offered to help with casting off, but Sakn seemed to have things pretty much under control and he figured he’d only get in the way anyhow. So, Xiu just enjoyed himself, looking up at the redhead once the anchor had been dropped.

Sakngea looked slightly different. There was less of something and more of something else in the boy’s features. It was in the way he smiled perhaps. Sakn seemed happy and content, practically glowing even. It was the first time Xiu had seen such an expression and he smiled back in relief. Things would be okay.

I love it. It’s the best place in the world. I could stay out here forever. I can see why you like it so much, Sakn.” Xiu replied earnestly, returning to leaning back over the railing again so he could stare into the water. He imagined he could see straight through the crystal clear liquid and right to the ocean floor.

And what do you mean a sea monster?” Xiu looked at Sakn sharply, eyebrows disappearing into his hairline before he managed to catch himself and scoff, “Yeah right. I bet that’s just a story to scare little kids!” He hoped so at least.
