Rath

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The two nomads rode at top speed through northern Learania. It had been relatively untouched by war. Bandit activity had picked up, unfortunately, from news of Sentria's declaration. Learanian bandits lived in the country being attacked, but they figured they would choose who they thought would win- their own kind. Yet, even with more brigand raids, there was an overall sense of peace. The people living in the north were fortunate. The ones higher north would be safe enough. Other northern villages were either migrating further north or to Eyris, in fear of the war.

Rath and his daughter continued on, passing the colonies that would be receiving more immigrants within the week. They did not waste time in paying those cities a visit. As they traveled, the natural change of terrain began to occur and at times, the two would through areas with grass that reached their knees while riding. Familiar scents blew in the wind, ones that reminded the pair of home. It was very peaceful in the plains. The land had suffered in the spring but were quick to recover. There was no war there.

As they continued to ride, Rath began to slow, allowing his daughter to catch up to him. He was holding his side. They had ridden two days straight. He looked over to her and gave her a signal to slow. "Stop... we shall rest a moment." After the passing word, Rath led his horse over to a small clearing by some trees and uncomfortably dismounted, then laid down against a rock against his own will. Rath reached for his canteen, but when he went to drink out of it, he recalled that he was finished what was left but a few minutes ago. Disheartened, he sighed. It felt like he was wasting time, but he knew taking rests was necessary. His attention went to Sue after she had dismounted. "...I'm sorry."

O Father Sky, Mother Earth...
I pray that you give me strength.

User ImageTwo days straight, they rode. The only time the nomads stopped, or came close to it, was to rest the horses when they started to get weary. Progressing up here to the north, where the ravages of war hadn't reached yet, was a strange sight for Sue to see. It was as if the chaos that embroiled Eyris was in a whole different world, a whole different country from this one. What was here, was peaceful... for now. And that's why they had to keep riding, to keep this peace.

It was almost sudden when her father asked for a stop. Still, Sue welcomed the rest, and halted her steed right then and there to enjoy a little R & R. On the plains like this... it was just like the old times. Just like Sacae. When she noticed her father's water canteen was empty, Sue offered some of hers. "Here, take some of mine. There's a river not too far from here, so we can refill whenever we wish." Sue suggested, smiling just a little.

"...I'm sorry."

When Sue's father uttered those words, she knew exactly what he was apologizing for. The female nomad was hoping to Father Sky he would not bring that up! And yet, he did... he did bring it up, and so there she was, remembering the nightmarish experience of the days past. Remembering how Rath was almost condemned, all because he kept silent! She did something she swore she'd never do, simply because Sue respected her father too much to do... but regardless, all her restraint vanished.

Forming her hands into small fists, she pounded her father's chest, although not very hard, but just enough to leave an impact. "You... ... What were you thinking?! What secret was so important you'd give your life to keep it?! I know the adviser couldn't be trusted, and you couldn't let him near Nino... but... the truth was you didn't kill her, you'd never do that! Why'd you stay quiet and almost get burnt like an oath breaker?! Why... Why..." By then, the anger she shouted in had descended into sorrow, and tears were streaming from her eyes. There would be no holding them back, not like she'd done all this time.

Rath was left uncertain of what to do or even of what brought that on. He closed his open mouth once his daughter concluded and looked down at her lovingly. "Susan... I was apologizing for having to take a rest." The girl's fists were grabbed and removed from his chest. "...I wasn't feeling well."

Rath was sure she would probably feel embarrassed, but she had no reason to. It was good that Sue relinquished her feelings. It was good that she took after her mother in that regard, and not her father. She also had a right to know, so Rath would answer her. "...I didn't say anything, because Nino asked me not to, and I promised I wouldn't. I didn't want people to know that... she left them. I didn't want anybody to think badly of her. I had hoped she would change her mind and find a way back..." He looked away from Sue, dawning a disappointed look. "Maybe she tried to... I don't know. I know I was wrong to keep the truth hidden. But she asked me to... that's why..." He glanced back. "I'm sorry you had to go through so much because of me." He wrapped his arm around her and she continued to cry. "Thank you for being so strong..."

O Father Sky, Mother Earth...

User Image"You're a fool, Father! Such a fool!" She said between the sobs, as her crying persisted even after she was pulled into Rath's embrace. "Since when did you think a life was worth more than a secret?! I could have lost you! I could have lost the only family I have in Learania!" Instead of pounding him more, Sue wrapped both her arms around her father's back. Leaning against him.

"... I know... I know... I'm supposed to be like you... I'm not supposed to flinch... I'm not supposed to cry, I'm not supposed to fear... and yet..." Sue continued to latch onto him, as if Rath would slip away forever if she were to let go at this moment. "I did... all those things. When you were in that man's clutches, I feared for you, Father. I should have shot him. But then... when the bishop warped you to safety, and I protected you from the battle, I realized all I cared about... was that you were safe. Nothing else."

And really, that was all she ever fought for, in Learania's time of crisis. Sure, she wanted the city back to normal. She definitely wanted the dragons back, because they were her friends... but the number one on the list was her father's life. How Nino could leave without notice, and force him to keep a secret that nearly killed Rath was something she could not understand.

When Rath thanked her for being strong though, Sue's tears were starting to come to a halt. She still never did let go though. "... I... was strong...? But... I'm cracking. And..." She made a sad expression as she leaned against him now. "I... was so selfish. Even now I am! All I ever wanted was for you to be safe, while everyone else fought for Learania! Maybe I'm a fool too..."

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. "Then I thank you..." Rath looked down at his daughter. "for being a fool." He looked back up again and watched the wind brush through the tall grasses not far away from them. "Everyone has a reason for acting, Susan- I hardly believe everybody who stopped the execution did do because they cared about my well being. Some acted for the benefit of Learania, some for their own safety, some out of profit, and others simply wished for Rogvald to die our of anger or revenge. You acted to protect me..." He looked back down at Sue again, this time grinning warmly. "and that is wonderful thought."

Rath moved his hand and felt it brush against something, so he looked down to his side. With the same hand that he moved, he pulled a clump of grass from the ground. "Ah... we are further into the plains than I thought." He held up the clump for his daughter to see. "This is what people call nomad grass. It is often unrecognized that nomad grass is a certain type of grass found in the plains rather than just all of the grasslands. It is a key ingredient in our tea, though it can be unhealthily abused. We'll pack this and bring it back with us... and use it to make the finest tea once this war is over."

As Rath looked at his daughter, he could see that she still seemed unhappy. "...We all have fears, Susan, even myself. And there is no shame in crying." He lifted her chin up so that she looked at him, to make sure she was listening. "It is whether you choose to face that fear or let it control you that determines if you are like me or not. We must keep moving forward." With his free hand, Rath reached for his canteen. "And I'm afraid I mean that literally, as well. We must reach the elders and garner their help. It is up to us."

O Father Sky, Mother Earth...

↣ ↣ ↣ Sue ↣ ↣ ↣

User ImageA thank you. It wasn't something that Sue expected, but she took the words to heart. Nodding, she looked up into her father's eyes. "I'm glad... you were grateful for my saving your life. I fought hard for it." She'd backed away, and wiped off the tears completely. There was no more reason to cry. She had done something good, something worthwhile.

Taking a glimpse at the nomad grass, Sue blinked. "You're right, this doesn't grow except when we're closer to Adliana." Thinking of being so close to that land almost reminded Sue of home. She thought of how the tea herbs were in such abundance there, and how she wanted to take so many home and share just the tea, not the other use of it, with her friends. There wasn't ever the chance for it though. "We'll have plenty of time for tea when we at last have the peace we fight for."

That scowl she first made must have still been there though, even after she noticed the tea, and even after she'd decided that her wish wasn't too much of a selfish one. She thought back to the time, when she did fear that she would lose Rath, standing up after what seemed like forever. It was time to go now, to leave the sadness behind, as well as the land of Learania for now. "You're right, we must make haste to Chieftain Songhua and the other Elders, Father. With their aid we will have more hope in striking down our enemies." Now she was able to grin, as she got on her steed. It was time to roam, just as the winds did eternally. But these nomads weren't just roaming, they were going somewhere with a cause behind them, a noble one.

Rath
------------

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. And so father and daughter continued on their journy to the heart of the plains. They stopped only once more when the sun vanished and set out again upon its return. The two of them rode alone for the entire day, not seeing a single other nomad, not even a scout. It left Rath with a feeling that something was happening that he was unaware of.

As their third day of riding was coming to its close, the two nomads rode over a hill to the sight of the Elder's encampment glowing in the night. Rath had said before he left that the ride was known to take four days, but that he intended to make it in three. He had done it with several hours to spare.

The two Learanians approached peacefully and were surprisingly met by an escort who claimed to be a member of Songhua's tribe. It was not so curious that they were met by an escort, but rather that the escort had made sure it was known that Songhua was his cheiftain. It shouldn't have mattered what tribe the man was from. It would have been presumed that he was one of the elder's guards. Furthermore, since he came as the escort, clearly on an order from Songhua, it meant that the guards of the encampment had no intent of coming out themselves. This left Rath with an even deeper feeling that something strange was going on. However, at least it also meant that Songhua was at the encampment, as well.

Rath motioned Sue to keep behind him as they trotted into the encampment. He glanced around at the guards, who only glared as they entered. Some were holding their bows, with an arrow ready to be pulled back. Once inside, Rath approached the tent where the Elder's met. He then dismounted and the escort offered to take his and Sue's horses to the stables. Rath nodded, and then as he looked up, was greeted by a most welcome face.

"You have no idea how happy I am to see you well, my friend!" Songhua boasted in a harsh whisper, as he slapped Rath's shoulder. "And that you are here now is truly a miracle from the spirits." He looked at Rath in a very caring way and then did a double take when he glanced to Sue. "Hwa ha! By Father Sky, dear Sue, look how you've grown since the last time I saw..." His cheerful, chuckling voice faded out as he glanced up at Rath and saw the ever serious expression of unamusement. "Err-hrm! Right, priorities, my apologies..."

Songhua straightened up and looked at Rath in an uncharacteristically serious way before continuing. "First of all, let me tell you that I received your letters and have done nothing but plead with the Elders since then to do something. I would have replied, but they forbade it." He leaned in and his voice grew comically irritated. "And you know me, my friend, I have disregarded their word before, but this time they even had constant patrols to intercept messengers and shoot down any hawk suspected of carrying a letter!"

He leaned back again and let out an aggravated sigh as he shook his head. It was obvious that he had been dealing with this mess for quite a while. "But you are here now that that is what matters. Now, before you go inside, there are some important things I need to tell you. Inside this tent are more than just the Elders. I was able to convince them that they should not so easily decree something and instead make a decision as one unified country by talking with all the chieftains together." He rolled his eyes to the side and spoke more lowly. "It is about the only thing I was able to do, I'm afraid..." As Songhua looked back at Rath, he motioned to the tent behind them. "Inside this tent are Adlian chieftains from all across the plains. Even their tribes have migrated for the occasion, and are camped just north of here. We have been discussing the situation for several days now and I am sorry to say that we are torn in our course of action. Hopefully, your presence will make a difference." Songhua shook his head. "No, no, scratch that- I know your presence will make a difference!"

The chieftain smiled, but could sense his friend's uncertainty about what he had just said. It made what needed to be said next all the more difficult. "One more thing, my friend." he started, lowering his voice into the softest of whispers. "I feel I must warn you that I cannot help but sense that something is amiss in all this... I thought that after you helped us in the spring and cleared Learania's name, that helping you in return would be the obvious thing to do. But ever since your country had a new king crowned, the Elders have not even mentioned a word about our relations. I could understand hesitation because of this, but I never would have thought they would outright ignore you. No, I feel as if something else is causing this." Songhua lowered his brows. "I sense that something has a hold on them... perhaps even somebody in that tent."

User Image"Songhua, there you are, we were wondering where you had gotten off to. You really shouldn't keep the Elders waiting, I'd say they can't afford the time you're wasting, not with their age." said a warm voice from the tent entrance that sounded on the verge of breaking into good hearted laughter.

The owner of the voice was a handsome man with soft features. His multicolored eyes shone with a sharp intelligence, and the scar above his left eye actually added to his looks rather then subtracted; it was the only flaw on an otherwise perfect face. One only had to look at this newcomer to see that he enjoyed finery. Unlike most nomads who clothed themselves in a practical manner, his outfit was made of only the finest silks. In short, he generated an air of wealth.

"Oh and who is this? Are you a friend of Songhua's?" the man said, appearing to notice Rath for the first time. Out of a false sense of politeness, he extended his hand to the stranger. "Forgive me but I need to steal him from you for a bit, he's needed inside. It's hard to argue a cause when the loudest supporter for it isn't there. No?"

Rath

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Songhua was certainly a talker and Rath was completely unable to get in a word, not that he needed or desired to. He knew Songhua would be able to explain what was going on and so he gave him the chance to do so. It is a hard thing to know if one can truly trust another person in the world. It was relieving to be reminded of how great a friend Songhua truly was.

Their private conversation was suddenly interrupted by elegant looking nomad who had just stepped out of the Elder's tent. Rath glanced at Songhua and saw that his expression towards the man was not one of friendly greetings. Given what he had just heard, Rath considered that perhaps this man was the one Songhua was talking about. When the man extended his hand, Rath naturally met it with his own. Untrustworthy or not, the man was a Chieftain and Rath could not afford to be rude to him. It was also clear that the Chieftain did not know who he was, either. It he did, he would have known why Rath was there, speaking with Songhua and that he was about to go inside as well. Rath would allow the Chieftain to remain ignorant for a few more minutes. "Then perhaps a new voice should be heard." As Rath stared at the Chieftain, he tightened the grip of his handshake and then let go as he looked to Songhua. "It sounds like they need you inside. I hope you don't mind if I accompany you." Knowing that Songhua would recognize that he was being facetious, Rath moved passed the Chieftain and entered the Elder's tent, followed not far behind by his daughter and Songhua,

Chieftain Songhua

PostPosted: Sat Mar 19, 2011 10:18 pm

It was true, Songhua did not like the man. Their ideals were vastly different and he saw the man as running his tribe like a pompous dictator. They were nowhere close to being friends. Songhua saw right through the veil of his friendly tone and politeness. He picked up on the subtle insult, too. When Rath handled himself quite well, he could help but don another smile.

"Of course not. Let us go in, shall we?" Songhua reached out his arm and led Sue in front of him, then followed behind Rath. When he reached the tent, he opened the flap, but stopped and looked to the other Chieftain. "Coming? You wouldn't want to keep the Elders waiting, I'm sure..." He chuckled as he went inside and quickly moved over to Rath and whispered into his ear. "Ishtur Rakesh. He's been the main voice against aiding Learania... A true thorn in my side. Good luck convincing him."

Songhua patted Rath's shoulder and then led him to an empty pillow next to him. Once the two Learanian guests were seated, he looked to the Elders, who wore evident faces of blame directed at Songhua as if to say 'You brought him here.' "Elders. I can promise you that I had no knowledge he was coming here. But now that he is, I say we have an obligation to hear his plea." He glanced over at Ishtur, who was just taking his seat. "Forgive me, my fellow Chieftains. Many of you must be unaware of who our guest is that just came in. He is not a Chieftain like us. I introduce to you now, Captain-" He stopped as Rath cleared his throat. "....Acting Cap-" Another cough. "... ...Vice Captain..?" Songhua was assured, when Rath nodded subtly. "Rath... representative of Learania."

Rath
------------

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Rath waited for Songhua to have a seat next to him, before looking up at the elders and then around to the chieftains that were laying their eyes upon him. The shocked expression from the nomad he had met at the entrance was a little amusing. That chieftain had to have been taken aback when Songhua introduced Rath as the representative of Learania. He had no idea that Rath, an seemingly insignificant person talking to Songhua outside, was really his biggest adversary in this situation. Rath could not help but fix his eyes upon that man in particular for a few seconds longer than the rest.

"You can easily surmise why I have come." he started at last. "I am unaware of how much you each know of the events that have taken place in Learania these past couple months, but allow me to recall the main events." He shut his eyes. "Mordache and Sentria sprang war upon us in a sudden leap of aggression. We retaliated, but began to lose city after city. In the midst of this turmoil, a boy claiming to be Leander's heir revealed himself. His identity was proven and he was crowned Learania's king. His advisor, who had raised him, manipulated the boy and used him to create many new outrageous laws and imprison people unjustly. He sentenced me to death. A rebellion arose in Eyris and the advisor tried to silence them. On my execution day, the rebellion surprised the advisor by showing up and rescuing me. Just as our people were being forced to fight one another, Nino returned and stopped it. Enraged, the advisor ended up revealing his insidious nature and attacked the king as well as everyone gathered. His last words before he died revealed to us that he was an agent of Mordache and a follower of Loki. He told us that our enemies were already on their way to siege Eyris and destroy us for good."

Rath reopened his eyes to show a hint of agony from the recollection. "The battle could very well be under way as we speak... When I gained power, I made great efforts to resew the ties our countries shared. I understand that it is hard for everyone to accept that Learania is not as it was in the days of slavery. But we consider the nomads of Adliana to be allies." He glanced around at the faces of the chieftains to see if he was getting through to any of them "If Learania is defeated, then it will not be long before Estarcia falls as well. After that, the evil in this world will spread across the land and your people will be forced to scatter and live in hiding for the rest of their lives lest they be slaughtered out of arrogant hate for what they are; for what I am as well." He looked up to the elders. "Our best chance is to stand together and face this evil. I come to you out of desperation. Adliana is our last hope. Estarcia will not move. Will you do the same? Will you not lend us your strength?"

For more information about Adliana or specifically the elders, go here: [X]

User Image User Image User Image"Late is the hour that this fallen ruler comes before us, seeking to enlist us to clean up his mess!" hissed Shamir, who could not bare to listen to another word coming out of the Learanian's mouth. He narrowed his eyes at Rath as he addressed him directly. "Or is it customary in your country to grovel at foreign leaders' feet, like a mongrel pup?" He cackled at his cleverness. "Do you think me blind? Do you not think the greatest diviner in the plains can see that your troubles are self inflicted?! Do not mock this gathering by claiming to be our friends. The only reason you helped us back in the spring was to clear your own name! You have no real acclaim to friendship between our countries." He turned to the other two elders beside him. "And we all know how the days of kings for Learania meant bondage for us! With a new king on their throne, history could very well repeat itself."

Kusume sat with her eyes shut, visibly disturbed by something other than Shamir's usual behavior. "You are... different, Representative Rath. The last time you were near me, you felt so strong, confident and connected with the spirits. But now..." She opened her eyes slowly and looked upon him. "I can sense only emptiness, pain and self-loath. Much has happened to you and it has left you scarred. I wonder if you can even sense the spirits yourself, anymore. But even with the pain and suffering you have gone through, it is nothing to what Kenafa and I have seen..." Kusume shut her eyes again as she was overcome by sorrowful memories. "You cannot understand... You do not know what it was like in the days of slavery. But Kenafa and I remember. We lived it. We can never forget..."

Elder Kenafa looked at his sister caringly for a moment before looking back to Rath with a look so stern that it envied the one Rath usually wore. "Your story is disturbing indeed, and the threat of two nations bringing down the other two leaves the plains too vulnerable..." In the middle of speaking, Elder Kenafa paused and looked for a moment as if his mind was blank and lifeless. Beside him, Elder Shamir's glare seemed to pierce him deeply. A wash blew over the head elder's eyes and a blink revealed his presence of mind had returned. "Though... I cannot help but heed Shamir's words. My sister and I were chosen... to ensure that history would never repeat itself. We do not know this king. We cannot trust his ways, especially with him having been raised by your own enemy." Elder Kenafa dipped his head slightly as if he were about to loose consciousness, then shook his head and looked around at the chieftains. "What of you all? Voice your thoughts on this, now."

One by one, the Adlian chieftains took their turn in sharing their stance. Most had concerns about their tribe's perseverance, due to the elders' obvious concern about Learania's new king. However, even with those concerns, only one or two chieftains seemed hesitant about helping Learania. This did not put a smile on Elder Shamir's face. But there was one man Shamir knew would support his stance. "And what about you... Ishtur? What is your opinion?"
PostPosted: Thu Apr 07, 2011 3:31 pm

User Image Ishtur had let himself slip, he'd betrayed himself by showing surprise at the fact that the man he had so quickly discounted had actually turned out to be the man who had been, until recently, acting guild captain. Quietly, he berated himself and quickly tried to cover it up with a smile as he met the Learanian's gaze.

Quietly, he first listened to Rath's speech and then to the Elder's words. When it was his turn to be called upon, he stood up from his seat and bowed low out of respect for the old crones before him. "It is my honor to be addressed by you, Elder Shamir, and I have made my opinion clear on numerous occasions on the subject of Learania." Ishtur turned to face the assembled tribe leaders, his voice rising as he spoke. "No aid should be sent to Learania. Elder Shamir has voiced the worries that all of us have had our minds upon; a return to slavery. Learania is now a monarchy led by a child king who, as this... Rath has said, has allowed himself to be manipulated into creating outrageous laws at the expense of his people! This does not inspire much confidence in me, brothers. What if his next choice is to try and subjugate the proud tribes of Adliana? What if he decides that a return to slavery would improve his rule? Brothers, if we help Learania now could we not be simply trading one evil for another?" By now his voice had gained momentum and strength. "I propose that instead of sending our brave warriors out to meet their deaths for a cause that could turn around and ruin our way of life we instead prepare for an attack on our own land. We are strong! Our back has remained unbroken through slavery and numerous other trials! Surely we can defend our own land better then these soft Learanians could theirs! But only if we have our warriors where they belong. At home. I say we leave the Learanians who have oppressed us before to reap what they have sown! I say let them taste the subjugation and humiliation we suffered once before!"

Ishtur stopped and let his words sink in for a moment, then he lowered his voice again. "That, Great Elders, is my opinion. My opinion is that my ancestors have passed down stories of how they suffered and I have no wish for my tribe and their children to experience it first hand." With that said, Ishtur sat back down and folded his hands in his lap. He avoided eye contact with Songhua or Rath as he pointedly stared at the Elders.

O Father Sky, Mother Earth...
I pray that you give me strength.

User ImageAs happy as seeing Songhua was, again, Sue wished it was under different circumstances. There was so much she wanted to tell him, but she couldn't find the words for once. What was wrong with her? Usually, she found the perfect thing to say, but for once, she was quiet, all the way to the place where Adliana's Elders were meeting. They would listen, wouldn't they?

And before she knew it, the meeting was underway. It was a shame that Songhua could do no more to help than what he already had done. Still, it was something, it was a start. So, she sat by her father's side, and listened as he spoke his piece and the other Chieftains spoke theirs. So many times, she wanted to rise and speak against them, especially Shamir, but Sue held her tongue. She knew better than to raise a cross word to a Chieftain, no matter what their tribe.

Ishtur, although seeming courteous and polite had a silver tongue underneath that act he put up. Such a travesty! While some of his words had a point, others were just plain foolish. Sue decided not to stay quiet or sitting any longer. This was a meeting, and all would have the chance to speak, right? Standing, the nomad trooper looked upon the chieftains with a steel in her eyes that spoke of a warrior's spirit.

"Honorable Chieftains... let me have a say." she began, eying them all, despite the obvious looks of contempt from a certain two. "First of all, let me say that I understand your sentiments. I too belonged to a tribe whom was conquered and oppressed, and it's only by the grace of Father Sky and Mother Earth that I'm even here." She said, curling a fist with great conviction. "However, is it truly right to judge Learania by the actions of her ancestors? Is it just to blame a son for the actions of his father?"

"I can tell you that I do not know the new King well, but I do know that without that wicked shadow behind him, he will have peace in mind." Sue continued, appearing as sure as she ever was before about anything. "Mordache and Sentria though... will stop at nothing to ravage our lands and truly bring back the horrors of slavery and tyranny. If they win, all is lost... but if Learania defeats them, we have a chance to make amends. ... That is all." And with that, she once again sat at Rath's side, cross-legged. She had said her piece.
