Kaatje was staying the night with a school friend, and for that reason alone she was in the Crystal dorms after curfew. She had permission, had her school ID; just didn't want to live there anymore, because it was just damned inconvenient. No one to answer to when she lived in her own little townhouse in one of the most prestigious neighborhoods of Destiny City. The butler wouldn't dare. He kept her secrets pretty damn well, even though he knew she wouldn't fire him. Andrews was what she had for a parent for now, Andrews and her older cousin.

After lights-out, though, she heard something weird; and not wanting to wake the friend, she skittered out of the room in her black pajamas to go to towards the sound. The henshin pen in her pocket was nothing but luck.

The pat-pat of her bare feet on the communal bathroom's tile floor was all she heard for a moment. There was a dripping faucet, and a sound of someone murmuring. ... So someone was talking to herself during an illicit bathroom trip. Kaatje shook her head, went to leave, and then stopped. There had been something in the nearest mirror. She turned, slowly, to face it.

A wiser girl would have run. Kaatje was not wise. She confronted, she thought, herself; a tall, curly-headed girl in black pajamas, blue hem around the cuffs and collar. Uncomfortably, she laughed. How ridiculous. There wasn't anyone here except that voice.

Then, from another area of the bathroom, something shattered and there was a beastial screech like the brakes of a train, applied too hard, too fast. She shoved her hand into her pocket, groping for the pen; her voice was drowned out by that long-lasting howl. Super Sailor Gunn straightened her shoulders, ignored the unease spurred by lack of the grinding beat she was becoming used to, and sped forward to confront the monster:

Like the Drunken Jack she'd fought with Themis, this one seemed human. It was a woman, emaciated, her skin seemingly made of living shadows that dripped from its skin. It crouched in front of a full-length mirror on all fours, shards of glass surrounding it. Its breathing was harsh, haggard, the strongest thing she could hear right then.

(The other voice had stopped.)

Mirrors were windows to the world for Ares. She could hide through them, she could travel through them, she could escape. It was how she came to enter the communal bathroom on her floor of Crystal Academy, done up in fuku and lightly sweating from her night. And she wasn't alone. The warm buzz of another senshi filled the bathroom -- and then a darker buzz that read one thing to the senshi: youma.

Sailor Ares hopped up beside the unknown senshi. "Are you just going to stand there, or what?" she snapped. The youma cocked an ear toward her like a wolf pricking its ears to the wind.

Whoops.

No sooner had the words left her mouth, and the youma was after her, claws extended. Sailor Ares tried to hop backward, but it was too late. The youma caught her by the neck and slowly lifted her up the wall. Booted feet kicked hard at the creature's side, coating the gray surface in blood. The youma was oozing, dripping, draining goo all over.

It might have been gross if Ares wasn't busy choking.

Oh, god. Gunn lunged after the monster as it went for the second senshi--registering, dimly, the black bodice. That almost made her back off. She missed the humanoid monster's ankle because of that tiny flinch. Didn't black uniforms on a senshi mean corruption? The mental image of the bell-weilding man almost sent her fleeing--monster and corrupt senshi, not a combo she wanted to face, especially not in such a tiny space.

But she didn't get that gross, skin-crawling feeling of an enemy, which meant that this black-clad senshi wasn't, which meant Gunn had to help her, didn't it? She leapt into action, seizing the monster around the waist and yanking. The monster's entire arm came away, fell limp to the floor, and it howled again with that deafening screech. "Holy s**t," Gunn said shrilly as the monster wrenched itself free, entire gobs of its flesh coming out in her hands as it leapt into another mirror in the bathroom.

Leapt into another mirror.

"Where the hell did it go?" Without the reassurance of the music in her head, she couldn't keep her cool. Gunn wasn't thinking when she shattered the mirror the monster had gone into; the re-emerging monster, for this reason, managed to tackle her to the ground, long teeth bared in a hideous smile.

There was no time for gratitude, though Ares certainly felt it in her chest. She slid back down the wall, grasping at her throat. Melting flesh splattered on her boots, and her nose wrinkled involuntarily. She told herself it would go away when the thing was dead, but it didn't make the sick feeling in stomach any better now.

Just as Ares got her bearings, the youma dove into a mirror. Mirrors? Two could play that game. The senshi of smoke made to dive through after it, but Gunn shattered the surface before she could, stopping her dead in her tracks. A flash of anger crossed her eyes, but was replaced by surprise as the youma dashed out again.

In this small space, her attack would do more damage to her ally than was safe. It was a calculated risk, but not one that she thought was worth it, not yet. Darting to the far wall, Ares pumped out several sheets of paper towels. She scooped up the largest shard of glass she could see in the towels, gripped it hard, and then slammed the makeshift weapon into the spine of the youma.

Her reward? A face full of geysering blood.

Sailor Ares staggered backward, sputtering. She couldn't see, goddamnit. Filthy hands wiped at her eyes, but it made nothing better. She grappled blindly for the sash at her waist, wiping her eyes clear as quickly as she could.

When she did, she saw the youma stand up and scream, its one good arm reaching high above its head. Blood spurted everywhere. The youma turned, aimed, and coated the fluorescent lights overhead with black-red blood so thick that the entire room was suddenly thrown into darkness.

With one hand devoted to holding the senshi of wildfire to the ground, there was only so much the youma could do--and most of it involved those sharp teeth. Gunn had an advantage in that she had two arms and prodigious, magical strength. She wasn't able to really pay attention to the other senshi; she had to keep the monster from getting at her throat.

When the monster screeched, she bodily flinched. It was flailing backwards, and her gasp cut off with a gagging choke when she got a mouthful of youma blood. "What the ********," she managed to say--that seemed to be a theme of today. The ********. What the ********. The room was dark--why the ******** it was silent. No haggard breathing, except for her own and the other senshi's. There was a dragging sound, and then a slow slurping noise, and nothing. Gunn stayed in place, too worried and afraid and--

"What kind of senshi are you," she asked the dark as she cautiously shifted upwards. The darkness abated a little as her eyes adjusted, and she could make out a foggy figure that resembled the senshi's long hair. "Black bodice but you're not--you don't feel corrupted?"

Then then there was another scream, and a dark shape flew out of a mirror again. "Do you have any method of lighting a fire, anything at all," she shouted over the noise, grabbing the shoulders of the monster girl and bodily throwing her towards the sinks.

In the darkness, Ares blinked to let her eyes adjust. She could only make out one shadowy form, and the aura coming off of her read as light energy -- the other senshi. "I'm not corrupted," Ares said sharply. How insulting, really. "I'm just not from the White Moon." She used her hands to feel across the wall, taking a cautious step into a bathroom stall. She was tired of leaving her back exposed. "I'm a Black Moon senshi." There was no time for more explanation.

The youma was back, and it was so dark that Ares could not make it out. So she closed her eyes. Part of her self-training involved sharpening her other senses. No better time to put it to the test than this. The commotion was coming from the opposite side of the bathroom, but one thing the other senshi said stuck out.

"Do you have any method of lighting a fire, anything at all?"

Not on her, she didn't, but Ares had a handy skill that would sure as hell make this easier. "Not on me. Hold on," she said, making a quick run for the counter while Gunn had the youma distracted. Her boots clicked against the surface. Ares felt blindly for one of the mirrors that Gunn had not shattered. "I'll be right back," she said, bracing her hands on the mirror. "Whatever you do, don't shatter another mirror."

With that, she was gone, disappearing into the mirror without an explanation and leaving Gunn to fend for herself.

The other senshi sounded pissed. Well, Gunn would too. Excuse her, though, seriously, did she have to sound so offended? The White Moon, the ******** was that? Actually, this whole thing was weird. Could the Black Moon be corrupted senshi who went good or something? It would make sense--a signal that they could no longer be trusted, that they were compromised once and could be again. Gunn didn't like leaving her life in the hands of such a person, but couldn't spare the time to draw the youma away. She had to destroy it here, before a civilian came to investigate.

Where the hell had the black-clad senshi gone? Gunn couldn't see her anymore, and then--Not on me. Hold on. Someone ran past behind her as she grappled with the monster; she clenched her teeth, hoping it wasn't a second mirror-hopping beast as she ground her knee into the emaciated girl-monster's chest. Bones cracked beneath the downforce.

"But if we shatter them all, we'll--" Too late. Where had the other senshi ********> It had to be a signal of past corruption. The damn senshi had bailed! Whatever, she could take this monster out herself, couldn't she. Gunn grabbed the monster's collarbones like handles, skin sinking through skin with a sickening slurp, and rolled backwards.

Without warning, Sailor Ares burst back into the room. The counter was slick with flesh and blood, and she lost her balance, sliding on top of the youma and Gunn as they grappled in the darkness. Damn. If only she had thought to bring a flashlight too.

Somewhere in Destiny City, there was a really confused guy questioning his sanity. One minute, he was sitting on a bench enjoying a cigarette and reading the newspaper, and the next, some half-naked teenager had snatched his lighter and paper and then disappeared into a mirror. Maybe it was time he stopped drinking...

Meanwhile, back in the bathroom, Ares rolled off of the scrambling pair, narrowly avoiding the swiping claw of the youma. "I brought a lighter and newspaper," she said, not bothering to explain how it had happened. Kneeling in the muck, Ares held the lighter up to what she thought was Gunn's hand. It turned out to be the youma's face. She realized this when she flicked the lighter, illuminating the gory, pock-marked face of the youma that had been terrorizing them.

The beast lunged at Ares, tackling her to the far wall and leaving Gunn behind. The newspaper went flying into the air, gently papering the bloodied floor, and the lighter skittered across the tile, ricocheting off the bowl of one of the toilets.

Gunn screamed when something fell on top of her and the youma; the teeth ripped a gash through bolero, into skin, started to bite. But she kicked upwards and the weight was gone, none of her flesh was missing, and then--

She looked at the flame, looked at the hand holding the lighter. "Drop it," she started to order, but Ares had already done it. Gunn lunged for the little silver thing, grabbed it and lunged away. The newspaper was a dim trail leading to the youma and the possibly-untrustworthy senshi. This latest bit of luck, though, made Gunn a little more inclined to trust her black-clad comrade.

"When you hear me talk next," she yelled, "kick the monster towards me and get out of here if you don't want to get burned!" She kicked newspaper into a semblance of a pyre; the blood was going to stink when it ignited, but she couldn't do anything about that. The lighter took a few tries before the flame took, but when it did, she yelled "Now!" and cried the name of her Super attack as she threw the lighter into the pile.

It exploded, no warning, no light, no nothing. There was suddenly a fire, a big one, large enough to torch anything thrown into it. Gunn had leapt backwards, just out of reach of the flames. They burned disconsolately as the fire alarm began to wail.

Sailor Ares hated taking orders, but it seemed like this senshi had a plan in mind. A plan was something that the senshi of smoke could get behind. When Gunn yelled, Ares kicked the monster, as told, but there was no time for her to dive back to the mirror. Instead, she ran over the counter, catching the licks of exploding flames as she dove headfirst toward the voice.

Her chest connected with Gunn's shoulders, and both girls toppled to the ground. With the glow of the raging fire, Ares could suddenly get a better look at the girl who had created it, especially since they were nose to nose in the muck of the bathroom floor. Blood and gore covered both of them. Before Ares could try to wipe it away, it slowly turned ash-colored and lifted softly into the air all around the pair. Apparently, the youma was dead.

The fire, however, was not.

"Shouldn't the sprinklers be turning on?" she shouted, crawling closer to the wall as the fire grew. Gray eyes flashed up to the ceiling. There were three identical holes where silver sprinkler heads should be. "What?" Ares said, gasping. Her mind belatedly remembered a letter warning about repairs being done to the bathroom. Apparently, the sprinkler system was part of that.

Without a word, Ares scrambled to her feet. She crossed to the toilet and began slamming a heeled boot down on the pipe over and over again. It took a while, but it finally split from the wall, shooting out a fountain of water. "Smash the toilets! We're going to burn this building down." The senshi of smoke leaped over the divider into the next stall and repeated the motion.

Smoke was slowly filling the bathroom, but Ares was utterly unaffected by it. It was a very fortunate perk for her sphere. Suddenly, heavy pounding sounded on the bathroom door. A voice was calling out, demanding the door be unlocked. s**t. It would be very bad for both of them if that door came busting in. If they were still in fuku, they would be arrested. If they were civilians, they would have to reveal their identities AND be arrested.

Ares saw no other option. She hopped back into the bathroom, flattening herself against a wall to avoid the flames. "We have to get out of here," she said urgently. "I can get us out of here, but you're going to need to trust me." She hopped up onto the counter and flattened her back to the cool smoothness of the mirror.

"Come jump into my arms."

Starting a fire indoors hadn't been the best plan, she realized belatedly. She had thought of the sprinklers, thought they'd kill it, but like Ares she realized too late there weren't any. Unlike the darker senshi, she had no smoke immunity either, so she was seriously regretting this decision. Now someone was pounding on the door and yelling, but she couldn't hear over a roaring in her ears that was more than smoke, but less than the flames. With a sickening lurch of her stomach, she realized what it was: fear. Pure fear.

At Ares' order, she started on smashing the porcelain toilets. It was astonishingly hard for the material they were constructed out of, and even harder because she couldn't see and could hardly breathe.

Still, they got it done, and she looked up at Ares. "You've got to be kidding me," she said through a harsh coughing attack; "Please say you're kidding me." But the senshi had gotten her fire when she needed it, so she owed her this little amount of trust. Gunn ran and jumped, then she shrieked as they fell through the mirror. It felt like being put through cool rain for a split second, and then they were tumbling out of a mirror into something that resembled a subway station.

Her companion was on the ground, curled on her side; the eyes were closed, and she was breathing hard. Gunn wasn't much better; the fight had taken a lot out of her, but at least she could hold her feet. This strange senshi had saved her from arrest--and she couldn't know how much that actually meant to Gunn, who had a rap sheet as long as her very, very long legs.

"Are you okay," she asked after a moment, collapsing beside the form of the girl. "That thing came out of a mirror--we just went through a mirror--what the ********? What the--" and then she dissolved into another coughing fit, and rubbed her stinging eyes.
PostPosted: Tue Oct 26, 2010 9:20 pm

Lately, Ares had been making a habit out of bringing people with her through the mirror. It was not an easy feat, never had been, and each time, she felt as though she had been tackled by the biggest linebacker the NFL had to offer. The ground of the abandoned subway station was disgusting, and it made Ares shudder. She rolled onto her back just so she wouldn't have to look at it, legs and arms splayed out on either side.

She took a moment to catch her breath before she attempted to answer. "I'm fine." Ares coughed, and then continued, "I told you -- I'm a Black Moon senshi." Ares added a ringing duhhhh in the tone. Her staggering self-importance often made her forget that not everyone was familiar with her faction.

After another moment of heavy breathing, this occurred to Ares. She sat up, curling one leg under her. "I am a senshi that isn't of this existence, not like you are." She raked a hand through a long tangle of cinnamon-colored hair. "We have a different queen, a different court, a different everything. And we can travel through mirrors." Was that a good enough explanation? Ares wasn't sure. She did know that it hurt to mention her queen, her court, her everything that had been lost.

The sadness showed in her eyes.

Gunn shifted the tiny amount necessary to bring her knees up in front of her, wrapped her elbows around her knees and just stared. Black Moon senshi? That was as clear as mud, and she was about to say so when the other girl elaborated. Contemplating this, she combed red-orange curls away from her face. Not of this existence... which was also about as clear as mud. With a different queen--was her queen the Serenity woman who sometimes appeared in her dreams? Find me.--a different court--a different everything.

Then how were they here? Could they have come through... through the mirrors? She couldn't deny part of the story when there were one or two factors that did line up. The mirror-travel was true; Gunn's presence here wasn't imagined, unless she'd died and just was now in an afterlife of a greasy, gritty, abandoned subway station. Which would ******** suck. "Well, uh..."

The look of sorrow she met with a concerned frown. Why in the world would Ares be sad? Gunn was coughing because of the smoke, shaking because she could still hear the monster shrieking as it died, but Ares was alive, and definitely not so badly afflicted as Gunn if she was guessing right. "I don't really get it? But... I'm sorry. Must be kinda weird to be alone over here with nobody knowing who you are." She plucked at the singed lace of her skirt. Mirror-traveling could be useful, she thought, though she couldn't quite think of how. It was so quiet. "Maybe others will come over?"

Probably it'd do no good to go back to the sleepover now; she'd already be missed. Maybe she'd just tell her friend that she'd freaked out at the fire alarm and left? Her cousin came to pick her up? "Thanks," she said then. "If they'd arrested me, I'd be in jail for the rest of my life. I think the list of things they want to arrest me for is as long as my arm." Longer, actually.
PostPosted: Tue Nov 02, 2010 2:42 pm

The sadness in her gray eyes sharpened into defense. "We have plenty of numbers," she said, perhaps too quickly. Ares was an ace in battle, but in conversation, she often gave herself away. It was a reason that Aphrodite made the better captain. Not that it mattered now. A dead captain was a useless captain. Briefly, she let her mind wander back to a time when Aphrodite had been not an annoyance, but a friend -- a friend who risked herself to bring Ares back from the edge, a place she so often flung herself to in dire times.

These thoughts were shaken away, hair stirring from the wind.

Sailor Ares got to her feet. She could feel her sadness catching up with her, and it made her want to run. In any case, she didn't think she could bear to talk about her old world any longer, even to someone who had helped her. "I'm going." It was stated as if to convince herself. "I'm glad we didn't go to jail." And then, firmly: "You fight well."

With that, Sailor Ares darted off into the night, racing to beat the shadows that chased her before they could take hold in her chest.

Defensive, thought Gunn; defensive, too defensive, and there was no way she was going to trust the words of a defensive person to be true. She knew that Ares must want it to be true, but it rang of desperation, not of recital of a fact. And she was getting up to say something--anything--but Ares was up too, and she looked to be leaving. This was confirmed, and Gunn said, "Okay. Uh..." and pulled out her cell phone before realizing it wouldn't work with a senshi of another court. She tried it anyway, felt relieved when it just popped up information and didn't enter her into the contact list.

"Thanks. You too," she said, "Be safe getting back."

Only once Ares was gone did Gunn realize she had no idea where she was. Damnit.
