All Hallow's Eve was fast approaching, and Deusdedit was starting to feel uneasy; he had never liked the Autumn "holiday", even when he was back in the stables of his former home. It was an excuse for everyone - humans and Soquili alike - to play pranks. While he would have usually found their antics rather amusing and fun, most of the pranks played during All Hallow's Eve seemed to lead to at least one party getting hurt. Sometimes mentally, sometimes physically...
He nuzzled his mate, snuggling closer to her; he tried his best, but he couldn't go to sleep. It was starting to get cold, and it would only get colder as winter approaches, and he was worried about his family. He could only hope and pray that both his sons were alright; they were both away right now and as the wind howled outside the cave, he frowned - the bad feeling in his chest refused to go away.
Grace returned the nuzzle, yawning as she shifted her legs to get into a more comfortable position; cold weather had never failed to make her sleepy... It reminded her of the days where she spent her days alone and sleeping the time away, battling the cold where her parents had left her. Of course, the situation was different now, but that memory had clung to her, refusing to let go.
"Go to sleep, they'll be alright," She giggled as she felt his body wiggle closer to hers; it was a nice, warm feeling, not only physically, but in her heart as well. She could tell that he was worried - she was too, but her sons were adults already! They should know how to seek shelter for the night as well as to take care of themselves... As parents, there are times where you must learn to let go, after all, no matter how hard.
"I can't... But I'll try again," He muttered softly, closing his eyes as he tried his best to stop thinking too much; Grace was right - they'll be fine... He took in a few deep breaths, having heard that they would help calm him down. Still, he couldn't help but feel that that something bad was going to happen... He turned to look at Grace, smiling when he saw the peaceful look on her face; she looks so at peace when she's asleep...
"Stupid, stupid Nas," He muttered, voice laced with contempt as he sat on his haunches, pulling his body up in a "standing" position. Lifting his nose up into the air, he took a few sniffs, trying rather desperately to catch the scent of the mare he was supposed to be (secretly) following. Getting down on all fours again, he sighed and then added, the contempt in his voice even more obvious than before, "Stupid, stupid Master..."
He was lost. A small, helpless Wolterpinger lost in a large, unforgiving forest! To make matters worse, it was autumn and food was scarce! Ah, he should have known that it would turn out like this, for his life was one without luck!
She could smell it from a distance away - it smelt like rabbit, but she was sure it wasn't one... Most rabbits should be asleep in this temperature after all. The Harpy narrowed her eyes; but she was sure that it was edible. Out of both curiosity and the desire to hunt down something to bring back to the Flock in order to prepare for the upcoming winter, Aviania swiftly turned and headed towards where she thought the scent was drifting from. She was silent as she zipped around the towering trees, careful not to trip over any roots. Her talons were at the ready to catch her prey whenever she caught up.
Food would be an important resource come winter, and even the smallest kill would help the Flock tide over.

Wait, what's this? He stood near the entrance to a cave, wondering if he should enter; he needed shelter for the night, but sleeping in a burrow was disgusting, uncomfortable and he'll have to dig one for himself! Way too much work... Whoever said that Wolterpingers were related to rabbits of hares must be utterly mad! he can't see the resemblance at all!
He hesitated; what if there was some foul beast in the cave? Like a bear... He would be made into a meal in a matter of seconds! Oh, decisions, decisions! Karrot took a few hops forward, expecting something to pop out from the cave as he went closer, eyes and ears alert. It was too dark to see if there was anyone inside the cave...
She froze as her sharp eyes spotted a small figure in the distance; a rabbit? No... It has wings and antlers... How peculiar! Perhaps he would be more worth as a pet than food. She smirked, resisting the urge to chuckle... She'll have to capture him first and let her darling Flock decide! Looking up at the canopy, she leaped, powerful leg muscles allowing her to propel herself high into the air. She landed on a tree trunk with a soft 'thud', talons digging into the tree shallowing before bounding off it to go higher, as graceful as if she was flying. Finally, she landed on a tree branch and pulled herself up, balancing on it for a second before leaping to the branches of the next tree, getting closer and closer to her prey with every leap.
It was interesting... Now that she was older, she seemed to want to enjoy her hunts rather than just quickly get through it. She paused when she was almost directly above the 'winged rabbit with antlers' creature, regarding it with a steady stare. When she was a young mare, she would just end it quickly... However... Perhaps it was due to the recent stress she had been facing in the Flock, but for once, she wanted to enjoy herself.
Did he just hear something? His ears twitched, and he quickly turned around; he was sure he had heard a 'thud'... Was it just his imagination? Maybe the cold was finally getting to him! And he was tired and hungry too... He frowned, turning back to look at the cave, weighing his options - stay outside and sleep in the cold, or get some warmth inside and risk there being a predator waiting for him?
Ugh, both are terrible! Of course, the potential of death was the worse of the two options, but still! Ugh, its all Nas' fault for leaving him behind! 'Go home', she says... Easier said than done! He would be punted by Master!
Aviania chuckled softly, wondering why it was staying so still... It was begging to be captured. Following its glance, her eyes landed on the mouth of a cave; from the looks of it, it was a rather shallow and small cave. Idly, the brown harpy wondered if that was its home... Turning her attention back to the creature, she realized that it had not moved. A soft sigh escaped her lips; she should stop wasting time... Had she gone soft? Flexing her talons, she readied herself before dropping down from the branch, landing silently and gracefully behind the rabbit-creature like a cat.
He might really be deep in thought; she had expected him to realize that there was someone behind him and make a run for it! Still, life's no fun without a good chase! Lowering her head to the creature's ears, she smiled as she whispered, her voice sweet and silky smooth, "Boo~"
Right. He sighed, eyebrows interlocked in a frown as he stared blankly at the mouth of the cave; to freeze or to risk being eaten, to freeze or to-
Boo.
The sudden voice made him scream like a little filly would, his fur standing on end as he jumped into the air, flapping his wings like a startled chicken would and lifting himself further into the air before landing a few feet away from where he previously was. Turning around, he saw giant talons and promptly blacked out, flopping to the ground out of sheer fear, his last thoughts being 'Ugh! This is it!'
Aviania chuckled; ah, that was certainly amusing to watch! She thought it would run like most prey would, but it freaked out like a chicken - all puns intended - would before promptly fainting! She moved forward and poked gently at its still body with a sharp talon; checking to see if it was faking it although she was careful not to injury her "prize". When there was no response from the creature, she figured that he must had been so frightened by the thought of being eaten that he was knocked out cold.

"D-Did you hear that?" Deus's head shot up, ears perked as he nudged his mate gently with a hoof; he was sure he just heard screaming coming from outside the cave! Nervously, he stood up on all fours, peering towards the mouth of the cave with wide eyes, as if expecting someone to come in at any moment. His heart was beating quickly against his chest, wondering who could scream like that... He was sure that what he heard was not from a dream...
"Hmmm?" Grace yawned, blinking as she blinked, her eyes half opened as she wondered what all the ruckus was about. This was the second time Deus had woken her up; he seemed to be rather jumpy around 'All Hallow's Eve"... Perhaps he did not like the holiday? Yawning again, the Usdia mare looked up at her mate, managing a small smile as she tilted her head, looking a little confused, "What's wrong? I didn't hear anything..."
Then again, she was fast asleep; most noise will fail to wake her up when she's this tired.
"I heard someone scream just now, I'm sure of it," He replied with a firm nod, eyes never leaving the mouth of the cave; if there was something dangerous outside, it might be beneficial to be on the alert. Then again, instead of waiting for it to come in, shouldn't he go out to take a look? If there really is something outside, at least he'll be able to distract it from Grace... After a second's pause, Deus frowned slightly, giving his mate a quick nuzzle as he spoke, his voice a low whisper, "I go check... Stay here."
Forcing a reassuring smile, the Usdia stallion then trotted as quietly as he could towards the mouth of the cave. When he was near enough to look out, he stopped, peering into the darkness as he tried to look at what might had made the scream as well as the 'dangerous being' that might had caused it. As his eyes adjusted to the limited light, he spotted a mare standing behind what looked like the body of a rabbit, her talons-
Wait a minute; talons on a Soquili?
"Stop!" He yelled out, almost on instinct, "Don't hurt the rabbit!" He knew that the strong would feed on the weak, but seeing it happen in front of him? That's different! However, no sooner had the words left his mouth did he realize what he had done; what if the mare with talons hunt smaller Soquili too? Like one of those skinwalkers he had heard so much about? With the safety of Grace in mind, Deus muttered a quick prayer in his mind and charged for the mare, hoping to distract her away from the cave.
"Oh, no- Deus!Come back!" She felt more awake all of a sudden when she realized that her mate was bent on leaving the safety of their home; even if she thought that he was being paranoid, it was still dangerous to be out at night! All sorts of carnivorous animals - Soquili included - preferred hunting at night! That made her worried as she stood up, hesitating when she was told not to move.
"Please be careful," She murmured under her breath as she watched him move away. Just when she thought he was going to return, however, he yelled something about stopping and a rabbit, before promptly dashing outside. Her heart skipped a beat as she tried to connect the dots, wondering what it was he saw that prompted him to run out like that, without saying a single word to her.
She frowned, not sure if she was supposed to stay put any longer; if Deus might be in trouble, she would want to help him!

"Now what?" The Harpy raised an eyebrow, head turning towards the voice - to her surprise, it was a... Foal? No, it was an Usdia: a breed she figured to be cousins of the regular-sized Soquili. While she had never seen them back in their original mountain home, these smaller built Soquili are rather common in this forest... However, the Flock has no use for them - their bodies are incompatible with those of her sisters' after all, and they do not possess any special skills or talents.
Quite a useless breed, in her opinion. What's one less Usdia stallion in the forest?
"Is that any way to ask a lady a favor?" Aviania smiled, shaking her head as she tsked, not moving a muscle even as the purple Usdia charged towards her. When he was within reach, she simply dodged with a soft chuckle before using her hind legs to kick him on his rear, sending him flying into a nearby tree. At the moment of contact, however, her eyes widened and she took a few steps forward from the impact - they were heavier than they look!
He knew he was going to get hurt, but he wasn't prepared for how strong the brown, clawed female actually was... He didn't even see the whole thing; he just saw that she dodged him... And next thing he knew, he had collided with the trunk of a tree. It took all his willpower not to scream out in pain; he didn't want Grace to rush out of the cave to check on him! Especially more so now that he had confirmed that the clawed mare was indeed dangerous and violent.
He twitched, breathing heavy as he tried desperately to move. However, as he tried to stand, he felt his legs give way under him and he fell to his side, groaning. Inclining his head to look up at the mare, he shook his head, at a loss at to what to do. Instead, he tried to swallow the fear building up inside of him, "Please... Let the little one go..."
"Little one?" Aviania echoed with a laugh, golden eyes glowing as she smirked, "Are you pleading for your own life, little one? Or are you actually foolish enough to plead for the life of this... Common creature?" She eyed the Usdia, knowing the answer to her own question; no doubt, he had seen several males in the forest before but none had provoked her and caused her to want to hurt him... Still seeing how injured he was, Aviania felt a little satisfied that she had taught him a lesson; perhaps that would be enough.
"Luckily for you, today's class on how to treat a lady is dismissed," She raised an eye brow as she turned around, head turned to face him, "Food is food, moving or not - I hope you remember that."
His vision was fading as he breathed heavily, the mare's words ringing in his ears. He wanted to reply, but found no energy to; it seems like breathing was all he could do as the mare moved away... He knew that food was food - and that carnivores need meat to survive, but that creature was just in front of him! He could not just pretend that he did not see anything!
However, his spirit was willing, but his body was weak. Muttering something incoherent under his breath, his eyelids became heavy and he passed out, eyes closed and body limp.

There was a loud 'thud' from outside that made her jump, and then silence... It was unbearable to not be able to see what exactly was happening outside! She frowned, worried for the safety of her mate; if all was well, he should be back by now, right? Anxious, she inched towards the mouth of the cave, peeking out as subtly as she could in order to not draw any attention to herself; after all, she was sure that Deus did what he did to protect her!
She scanned the forest in front of her, looking for any sign of her the purple Usdia; what she saw, however, caused her eyes to widen as she dashed out from the shelter, fearing the worst as she approached the unmoving body of her mate. So frightened was she, that she failed to notice the figure a short distance away from where he was.
"Deus! Deus, are you okay?" She nudged him with her nose, trying to get a response out of him, "Deus?"
"And who might you be?" Her gaze landed on the cranberry Usdia, her voice icy cold; she seemed terribly concerned about the fallen stallion... Perhaps they are mates? As if being smaller and weaker is not enough - they practice lifemating too? Aviania narrowed her eyes, not quite sure what to make of the smaller mare, "Don't worry - he is alive. However, because he had the audacity to show me disrespect, I cannot guarantee that he did not break anything."
She added the last part out of pity; the mare seemed terribly upset, after all. While she did not understand how you could drop tears for a male, she understood that even among her sisters, there are those who chose to defy traditions and take only one stallion to sire her foals... Apparently, their attachment to each other is as strong as her attachment to the Flock's Oracle.
"W-Wha-" Grace shivered when a voice addressed her; she did not like the tone of that voice at all... Slowly, she turned around, backing up until her rump was against the tree her mate had passed out under, intimidated by the claws on the brown mare's feet, "I-I-I'm G-Grace..." She then paused, the feelings of fear slowly being replaced by feelings of anger bubbling up when she heard what the mare had to say.
"You! Why? What did he do that you must gravely injure him like this?" Part of her was still frightened of the mare, but she knew that she would have to stand up for herself.
"Why you ask?" She turned her body so that she was standing sideways, and gestured towards the limp body of the winged rabbit on her back with a nod of her head, "He was foolish enough to try to stop me from getting my meal... And in this season and the next, my Flock - or herd as you lowlanders call it - need all the food it can get. It was his own fault for trying to be a hero. However, as I said, he is still alive and you should count yourself as being lucky."
Why did she even bother to explain? Giving the Usdia mare one last glance, she started to move away from the clearing; there is too much work to be done to be hanging around!
"I-" As soon as her mouth opened, she closed it again at the smell of something metallic in the air, a scent that caused her to freeze for a moment. Slowly, fearing what she might see, she turned towards where Deus was laying, and realized that there was blood trickling down his back - where he had collided with the tree - and that it was dyeing the earth near the tree a deep red. While it was not a huge amount of blood, it was enough to send the small mare shaking as she prodded her mate again, ignoring the clawed female as she moved away.
"Deus... Deus, please open your eyes!" She was desperate, wondering if she should move his body; if she did, would he sustain further injuries? For the first time in a while, she prayed silently under her breath, asking for help; she had no knowledge on what to do, after all! She nudged him again, her voice shaking as she spoke, "Please open your eyes!"
She could smell the blood in the air; it was there from the beginning, after all... A predator like herself was more sensitive to its scent. However, judging from the sobbing she heard coming from behind her, it seemed to her that the Usdia mare had only realized that her precious mate was bleeding.
