Well, if I could choose a PC-98 character to be brought back to life, I'd definitely pick Elly.
I'd love to see more of the Mugenkan area... maybe something that puts it on the level of Koumakan and Chireiden.

I seem to recall an interview in which ZUN basically said it'd be too awkward to bring back the PC-98 characters and continuity because then he'd have to explain where they've been and why they didn't come back sooner to participate in the other incidents. Which, in all honesty, isn't a bad explanation.
That said, UFO does give us a pretty good excuse for Touhou 13 to explore Makai more and see what Shinki's been up to since Mystic Square...

Which, in all honesty, isn't a bad explanation. It can be a good explanation if he feels that way; but to tell the truth, he doesn't even need to give an explanation for those two points. Most Touhou characters appeared in only one game and were never accounted for in any following games. The print works do give a consistent integration of most of the cast, however. If any PC-98 characters were to return, it would most likely be the Mystic Square Cast or Elly.
Also, Mima is the Mewtwo of Touhou

I dunno, Woutan. I really like that he's built up such an expansive world with all this. I mean, it shows he's extremely talented as a writer and composer. Especially as he builds larger scales for the world of Gensoukyo as a whole.

So, Woutan, you're suggesting Touhou should be more like the Final Fantasy or Legend of Zelda games in that regard (no overall continuity)? I suppose that's one possibility.

FF can be summed up really easily, actually. There's only four or five actual canon continuities, the rest is just separate stories told in similar style. Ivalice Canon, VII Compliation Canon, IV and The After Years, X and X-2. That's it.

Maybe, but you do have to admit- it's a pretty nice story. A bit cliched, perhaps, but certainly very well thought-out and illustrated. Sometimes 'save the planet, save the world' plots can be done in a manner that spares the anvil and puts it well among other elements, VII did that- at least, I think so. For a first foray into a more 'modern' style, VII was very good in many ways. I don't like the hype, but if you ignore that element and just focus on enjoying the game for what it is, you can appreciate it all.
._. Then again, I'm horribly pragmatic when it comes to judging games as anything but works of art- I can't be very critical about anything unless it's mind-numbingly detracting.

Gensokyo will continue being an expansive world as long as ZUN comes up with new stories, regardless of whether such stories have a continuity (like the MoF-SA-UFO "saga") or not (like the rest of the games).
