So, is this anyone's first year doing competative field show, or competative anything? Or have you ever been a part of a first year competative band? If so, do you like competing? Why did you start?
I'll share my story,
My feshman year we got a new band director in the summer. By then it was too late to change the show, which was a fourteen set santana show. We were a predominatly parade band before the arrival of our new director. Then, my sophomore year, he changes things up. He gives us a show with actual drill, and says we're competing. It was so amazing to be on the field doing something so different and complex. We've built up the field show and this year, our third year competing, we got a first place trophy biggrin On the whole, a great experience and I'm sad I won't be around to see the program grow any more.

Once upon a time, my school's band actually did parade competition. They did it so well, in fact, that they were invited to audition for the Rose Parade!
...And then we got a new director, who runs on what we like to call "band logic", or "anti-logic". He cut out parade competition until last year.
But then, last year was a disaster. Only last year's seniors knew how to do parades at ALL; people hadn't been keeping up their uniforms for inspection, technique was getting horrendous, and don't get me started on gate turns... and we didn't practice until TWO DAYS before the competition! D< And he changed the music on us the week before! Aggh!
And the same thing's basically gonna happen this year. We've touched our parade piece, Americans We, ONCE (or maybe twice, if they did yesterday...I was sick). Our competition's next Saturday, and before that we're probably going to be cleaning the crap out of the last movement... Blah. And we still don't know how to do gate turns.
