The world needed a hero.

And that hero... was not Sailor Neso.

After leaving his apartment with every intention of going on patrol, Neso had stumbled across an apple tree in someone's backyard. He spent thirty minutes climbing the tree, and another ten selecting the five best apples to eat.

He ate the first two while attempting to walk the balance beam over the sidewalks from Sovereign Heights to Meadowview. Then he accidentally destroyed one after it fell from his head and rolled into a gutter. (It wasn't as easy as it looked to balance an apple on your head, you know.) The fourth he gave to a homeless man propped up against a bench near DC Central Park.

It took an hour, and he was already worn out.

With one apple left and no more desire to crimefight, Sailor Neso scaled the nearest high rise building, took a seat on its ledge, and set about finishing his last pilfered fruit.

Destiny City, his City, their City, needed more than a hero. Ladon had been hoping for one for a long time, and it seemed the Negeverse was the only solution to straighten out the twisted dark innards of the streets and lowlifes crawling in it like parasites on a festering corpse. Was he that hero? To someone, maybe, but heroes were rather childish now for him. He had other intentions. There was a long list of responsibilities and people he was working for, and all of it was personal.

Things had changed. Wolframite had changed, and it wasn't simply the outfit.

Maybe it was foolish of him to be scaling high-rise buildings when he was still having a hard time jumping, navigating, coping, but he was too frustrated, to eager to dig his hands into a certain-someone's chest and tear out a precious living source – either bloody organ or humming starseed – either one would satisfy him.

High-rises' were best for scouting, for looking down and for keeping safe. It was an advantage point where he was less likely to be jumped on. Caution, he admitted, had been a larger concern for him now. With one handicap, he wasn't about to add any more. He couldn't afford to screw up, to loose a limb or, the thought terrified him, his only eye. If he went blind, he would be useless to others, the city he wanted to fix, and to the Negaverse.

It was why he was being careful, avoiding the overly-populated hunting grounds that invited all sorts of senshi and – since he wasn't sure yet about the reports – Wiseman. When he slowly hopped up onto a ladder and to the top of a rather tall buildings (which he was considering going to a lower one), he saw the boy. A senshi, and as uniforms, not the senshi he was looking for.

Still, he was a worthless smudge on the city, and he felt his skin crawl as he walked, noticing that the boy was relaxing and eating an apple of all things. Usually he would congratulate anyone who choose to eat healthy, but he didn't care about this senshi's health. In fact, he was tempted to take his boot and shove the boy off the building just to see him splat. Still, it seemed not enough. He had yet to meet a senshi till this point, having been on a hiatus due to his health and apprehensions, and just didn't think a quick death was suitable.
He had a new sense of bloodlust now.

Summoning his weapon, the weight of cold metal feeling secure in his hands, he started to approach. He then, with purpose, went all the way up to the senshi. NOTHING! The boy didn't even notice him! He wasn't even trying and the boy was this easy to sneak up on.

He wondered how easy it would be to slice his neck? Nah. Better to have fun. Get a name. That was good for reports.

He lifted his boot up and pressed a heel to the boys' back. "I could push you off right now. Up this high, you'd just splat like a egg on the pavement." He pressed on the back of the senshi's to prove this point, but the force to shove him wasn't there. "That's how easy you would die. Just one second eating an apple, and then – splat."

High-rises were best for looking at the city, that much was certain. Neso took a bite of his apple and then held both hands up to square the horizon. He bent one finger and said, "Wish I had my camera." It was barely audible, but enough to distract him from the noise behind him on the roof, if he had been paying attention (which of course he wasn't).

It wasn't until there was a boot in his back that Neso paid attention to anything at all. There was a chunk of apple in his mouth. Neso turned over his shoulder and chewed it slowly. "Hi," he said, confusion plain on his face. "Thanks for the tip."

Neso got to his feet casually. He sensed some weird vibes coming off of this kid, but he didn't have enough experience to understand what that meant, that this dark energy meant more than bad mojo, that it could mean death. The senshi smiled and lowered his hand (he was quite tall compared to anyone, but especially someone of the Nega's height) to shake the stranger's hand.

"I'm Neso," he said. "Sorry I don't have another apple."

This kid wasn't new, he was fresh from the factory new. The boy wasn’t even scared! What an idiot! It was still a temptation to just shove him off due to how annoying he was. Senshi this fresh only enraged him more. Every day the senshi got more and more recruits, fresh morons like these ones, that would soon grow and grow into dangerous enemies. The power-ups were not something he liked to think of, and he didn't like the idea of the Negaverse's already small number being outgunned by idiots, trespassers from the moon, like this boy. Boy! He would say boy only because he was such a empty-headed nothing that really did deserve to be under his boot.

Taking his threat as sound advice, the ssenshi ignored the shoe, turned about, and rose up, all the while eating – smacking – on that stupid apple. Never had chewing been so annoying to him, and if he wasn't such a fan of fruits, Wolfy would have sworn off apples for the rest of his life.

The icing on the cake was the offered hand, and he started in disbelief that he would even INSULT him with that – that – mangy mitt of his!

He curled his nose in disgust, taking the tip of one knife and pinching it so that he could hold it, tapping the other end against his open palm. He looked the boy – eating his apple – good-natured, smiling, friendly – to the hand that clearly didn’t know who it was trying to make friend with. His green eye narrowed, and he looked back up at the boy. "Are you kidding me?" Really, this boy was the dumbest senshi he had ever met.

"Do you even know who or what I am? Did you get changed into a senshi this morning?" Maybe it was a good thing that the senshi had so many in their numbers that they were slacking on training them. This was senshi-nega 101!!! "I'm not shaking your hand." The tone was of clear repulsion, and delivered in a way that told the senshi that this should have be obvious. To touch HIS hand? AS IF!

Neso's eyes dropped to the knife in the strange boy's hand. His smile faltered, became questioning. It faded entirely when his handshake was not only refused, but mocked. Was this the kind of person that the other sailors had warned him about? Was this the enemy? Neso didn't like to think he had any enemies. His struggle over good and bad had been made easier when he reconnected with his little senshi circle. The Negaverse were evil, the baddest of the bad. Getting rid of them meant making the world a better place -- and that was what Neso wanted: to make life better.

What rabbit hole had he stumbled into that evening?

So he backpedaled. "Sorry, I just..." Eloquence had never been his gift. Neso shuffled awkwardly. "I believe everything in the world deserves respect and a chance at peace."

With his back to the edge of the roof, Neso felt unprotected. He took a step to the side to give himself a touch more security. It didn't help much. The bad vibes that had eluded him before now came swelling into his senses at full force. He tried to push them back. "What's your name, brother?" he asked. The apple was reduced to a core clutched in a nervous hand.

Uniforms were misleading. He had a hard time deciding who was just a beginner senshi , or who was a super or eternal (ranks he only recently learned about). It was the attitude that gave them away. The boy before him was obviously fresh to have the sort of mentality he did or he had been rather sheltered from the war going between their two fractions. It was a pity no one from his side had pulled him aside to stress the important of not talking to strangers, especially ones that clearly resembled the Negaverse, but Wolfy was kind. He would show this boy what real dangers lurked in donning on his senshi uniform and socializing with his team. What better teacher was there than experience, and as life has recently taught him, harsh, merciless violence.

Already he was looking at the senshi's eyes, the exposed skin, and felt a deep urge to take out large chunks. He wanted to cripple him. Render him completely useless and mangled so that all his fellow senshi could see the damage. He wanted to make an example.

"Brother? I'm no brother to you." His green eye narrowed as he looked up to the taller boy – the MUCH taller boy, and set his gaze on him with a curling nose and a gritting of his teeth. "Someone hasn't been informing you correctly. You're not related to me. You're not a brother to anyone on this planet. You belong to the moon instead of trespassing on my planet. If you believe in respect and peace, your people would have never come here to try and make a mess of us. Your kind, who aren't welcomed here, don't belong here, and have done nothing but create problems. Just you being here is a display of war and disrespect to all people of Earth." Normal people. People who didn't create magic-induced comas all over the city and send half the population running for their lives away from here, the few others dying in their hospital beds.

His slender hands slid around the cold chain, and he idly twirled a blade at one end. "My name is Captain Wolframite. Earth-born, a protector of this city, of this planet, and proud member of the Negaverse." He turned on his heel, watching him, stepping just a step – just one – closer. He was angry that this boy would be so pleasant about all of this, be ignorant of all the pain his kind had done to this city, and that he did not know better than to know about the Negaverse. Flaring blood lust gleamed as bright as the city lights off his blades in his eye. "The only way for peace on this planet is for you to die."

Sailor Neso didn't understand. His mouth fell slack, eyebrows furrowed. It was the kind of comic expression that might cross the face of a protagonist during the yukk-yukk "big reveal" of the full scope of his naivety. He started to say, "But I was born in Destiny City," but was cut off by Captain Wolframite's diatribe. The senshi of summer didn't like the tenor of this conversation. If this was a party, he would make an excuse to get away from this wet blanket, or would crack a joke to avoid the heavy topic. On the rooftop, there was no such easy escape.

The wind whipped wildly across the flat cement surface of the building's roof. It stirred the long coat at Neso's back. The long strips of serrated fabric at its bottom slapped noisily against the bare backs of his legs. It was getting cold; he could feel that in his bones. As DC rotated farther from the sun, the summer grew more distant, a mere memory. Some days, Neso fantasized about chasing the sun across the globe, scaling continents and seas so that he could live in a constant state of summer. In such a serious situation, it was hardly appropriate for his mind to be wandering, but there it was, wandering toward the promise of eternal sun.

The sailor was sucked out of that sweet reverie by the threat of death. It brought him back to the cold and staggering reality that he so desperately wanted to avoid.

Neso stepped backwards and raised his hands in front of him like an old woman being mugged for her purse. "Wolframite, you don't have to do this. I don't want to hurt you. I don't want to hurt anyone. If we would all lay down our weapons, we could have peace. Don't you want peace? Don't you want to spend your nights at parties, or working on photography, or hanging out with your friends, or your significant other...s?" Neso was, in fact, listing all of the things he would rather be doing. He assumed Wolframite would want the same things.

His feet continued to backpedal. When it came to fight or flight, Neso had no problem deciding. He quietly searched for exits. There were two ladders off the roof. Both were behind Wolframite. The other option... well, the other option was not one he wanted to consider.

There was a touch of fall in the air, that small bite and crisper smell in the undertones of the summer air, and he was greatly fortunate that his uniform had him covered. He was prepared for it at least, as he hoped he was for other things. He had been a serious Negaverser all his life, but he was now at a new level of purpose that he hadn't had before. Personally affected more than once by the dealings of senshi magic, his sense of protection for his friends and family were further intensified by his dark-rooted hatred for the enemy. The list that the senshi offered only reminded him of why he was here. "It's for my significant others that I'm here. You senshi have done nothing for this city. The comas, the magic attacks, the destruction of others and the killing of members on my side – we long since gave up the option for peace through just dropping out weapons. I'll never do that. I have a lot to pay back after all." He moved closer, taking a great delight in the other senshi's' display of fear and resistance to battle. He wondered if he could just reach out and rip out the starseed in his fluttering chest.

Gesturing with his knives, he gestured to his face. "I've given a lot for this cause. I'm not about to just turn away and pretend it never happened." He let the chain slide in his hand, gaining some length, before he started to spin one of the blades about. "You may not want to fight, but I do. You may not want to hurt anyone, but I do." His bright green eye glimmered and he smiled. "In fact, I'd like it."

He spun on one leg and threw out the other in a wide kick. As of right now, it was best he do his attacks close range as best he could. He needed to be closer to cut him.

Significant others? Neso could understand that. He had several people who he considered significant others. In fact, he sort of looked at everyone this way, which, in truth, made no one significant. Except his fellow seasons, the Zodiacs, and of course the Princess. They did sit on a slightly higher pillow, even if Neso wasn't terribly aware of it. It was a shame that none of them were here now to help him. Up on the roof with this stranger advancing, Neso felt a cool pang of loneliness. It mixed with fear and made his knees shake -- and with legs as long as his, it made for quite a bit of rattling.

The senshi of summer raised his hands in front of his face. It was a comic sight -- massive Neso cowering in the face of the smaller, frill-covered boy before him. His deep blue eyes followed the chain as it flowed through Wolframite's hand, but stopped on the blade. He swallowed hard. "C'mon, man, life is a cycle. Death only brings on more death, right? Hurting me won't bring back any of your loved ones, just like me fighting back wouldn't save my fallen buddies either. We just got to lay down our weapons and look for a bright future -- together." Neso took a trembling step forward.

Shadowed by the glowing moon, it sort of looked like he might be attempting to hug the Negaverse Captain. "An eye for an eye makes the whole--" His words were cut short. Wolframite threw a swinging kick, and it hit Neso like a sack of bricks. The impact sent Neso reeling back, falling flat on his back. He staggered to his feet and slipped on some loose roofing. "You don't need to do this, man! We don't have to be enemies!" His hands were up again, but it wasn't an aggressive stance. Hell, it was hardly defensive. Neso backpedaled, aiming to put distance between the pair.

He gritted his teeth as he moved forward. "And eye for an eye makes what? Do you have fun using that phrase? How about this. A limb for an eye. Al life for an eye. How about I care out your starseed. That might add up a little, but the starseed of a little, rookie senshi hardly adds up, now does it? Chopping people up might not bring anyone back, but I'm sure a few of my friends would be applauding such accomplishments if they were still around. It would be honor to do so. Uploading a personal duty. For those that have fallen, who will fall, killing you prevents those in the future from being troubled." He still held his weapon, but moved for another kick. He wanted to crush the boy under his shoes.

"You’re a senshi. You ARE my enemy. The only way you could ever be seen as anything more than that is by coming to the right side, the Negaverse side, and actually defending Earth. We already have a few……but, I'd rather you were just dead." He really wasn't in the mood for offering senshi a way into the Negaverse.

He made for another kick, wanting to send the summer senshi down to the ground, but being wary that the more he pushed him, the more he might use his powers. He still had to use it and Wolframite wasn't going to be caught unaware.

"Death might bring about death, but in the end, someone has to be left being the winner and I'm not letting your side be the victor." The boy was completely open and in no way was putting up a defense. What a rookie mistake. With so much open to him, he almost felt bad to do such a horrid thing to him. Well, for a second, and like a stupid idea, it passed.

His fingers gripped the end of the chain and with a wide swipe, he threw the knife directly at the senshi's center. Wolframite held the chain and spun again, making a wide loop of the chain that once again came across at the senshi, a wider arch of the knives as they whistled through the wind.

This was not going the way that Sailor Neso. Couldn't they just back in time? Couldn't he just have eaten his apple and gone home for a nice night of sleep? It didn't occur to him why Wolframite took such offense to his little quote. Neso was not always the most observant senshi in the world, or person. He would pay for that mistake.

His hands were still raised. "You're freaking me out. Let's just talk, man." Neso was not getting the hint.

It took a kick to the chest and a swing of a knife in the same spot. The slice was an angry gash over his chest, but shallow thanks to the angle he fell at. His arms moved just in time to catch the other cut across his arm. "No, stop!" he shouted. One long leg kicked out, aiming to knock Wolframite off his feet.

Maybe then Neso could run.
PostPosted: Tue Nov 02, 2010 8:55 pm

A look of sheer delight brightened his youthful features that. It hadt he same similarity a boy might have in seeing the sight of their favorite appear, but the softness was destroyed as the smile twisted to a feral grin as he gritted his teeth and the lights of the city glimmered in his eye. He moved closer, watching the senshi flail about, telling him to stop, all the white his uniform (What little there unwisely was), stained. The satin gold and pure white turned red. Not deep, not fatal, but a mark was a mark. The tan skin reddened by the wound, and Wolframite moved closer for inspection. To admire his own handiwork.

The kick hit his leg and he jolted back, and stumbled a bit before he regained his footing. Prepared to kick the boy, he held his head and grimaced. The tumble back and quick claim to rebalance himself had made everything swim and he felt off balance and sick. A sharp pain struck to his side and he held his head, steadying himself to stop the world from spinning. The city lights danced about, flashing and dimming, swirling about in the night sky before he blinked back into focus. He needed to rest. To lay down a moment, but doing that would not do him any good. Not here. Not around a senshi that could kill him. Could damage him.

He looked back at the senshi, on his back, bleeding, easy pickings. He moved over, and breathing hard, set a knee grinding RITGHT INTO that chest wound before he set a dripping knife in front of him. "I could kill you. I could take your starseed, but I'm not." Yeah…he was deciding not to. "You run and find that b*****d Castor that when I see him again, I'm going to pay him back for that eye. And for every senshi that I see that isn't him, I'm going to tear them to pieces." And then he lifted himself off the boy, moving away, breathing hard.

Worry struck him to think that he might had damaged something he wasn't suppose to with all his moving about. Take it easy, they said. Be careful with yourself, they said. He needed to go home.

"Go!" He shouted.

His powers. He had them, Neso knew this. His fist could glow and swarm and crush things in its fiery arc. The words touched his lips. The senshi of summer tried to will himself to stand. "Summer Heat Strike..." he murmured, raising a hand up. It wiggled with lines of heat, but only dimly.

Then Wolframite brought the crushing blow down on top of the gaping slash that had only just gotten chance to really bleed. The noise that came out of Neso seemed unnatural, too animalistic. His charged hand flopped uselessly against the bend of the Nega's knee, at worst leaving him with a pleasant heat on the spot, nothing that could harm or even annoy.

This was who he was. Neso was the guy who lost the fight. How had it happened so fast? Hadn't everyone warned him to be more careful? The thoughts were too real, and he squinted them away, all the while feeling his ears assaulted by the boy he was certain would kill him that night.

Castor. Tell Castor.

When the pressure on his chest alleviated, Neso crawled to his feet, blood running down his arm and chest like run-off from a shower. He tried to extend to his full height, but the cut pinched, forcing him to sag forward. Was this a trick? Neso was not so manipulative to think that. A hand clutched at the wound on his arm. It stung.

"Okay," he said, weakly. The senshi started to back away. "Okay, I will tell him."

Sailor Neso was shaken and scared, but he took the risk of turning his back to run away. And run he did -- he ran all the way to the red light district, a place where another senshi had told him you could get decent enough medical care without any questions. As for finding Castor? Neso wasn't sure if it he had it in him to share that most terrible message.
