Daisies. Vanessa had some.

She reclined in the towering shade of an oversized Honeysuckle shrub, whose vines arched and twined so high that, if she were to stand, Vanessa could not see over top of them. Summer had given way to autumn, and the leaves of the trees decorated the park in beautiful shades of red and yellow and brown. The sun shone brightly in the afternoon sky, and lit up the city like a torch.

The daisies in her hands were miraculously fresh. Vanessa had rescued them from the top of a garbage can. She examined the little bouquet absently now, inhaled their scent, and plucked from the stem a wrinkled note.

Scrawled across it in curling script was a declaration of love from somebody named Declan to some one named Ronan. Vanessa thought that it was very sweet and, because she felt that somebody ought to have it, tucked it in her pocket.

A warm breeze whispered through the park. It ruffled the leaves of the trees and the petals of the white flowers that she held. For the first time in a long time, Vanessa felt peaceful. She was adjusting slowly, but surely, to life without Super Van and life with Auntie Marianne, and was a little bit startled to realize that she didn't mind not fighting bad guys and hunting down monsters.

At least, for a little bit.

Maybe, sometimes, super heroes needed breaks too.

It was an absolutely lovely day. Perhaps a testament of how beautiful Autumn could truly be. Yet, somehow, Howl was unable to find the time to appreciate the physical appearance of the world.

No, he was walking through the park with a planner at hand that he seemed to be reading quite intently. It was a bit unusual, since it looked like he was studying the planner rather than adding anything to it, which would have been a very accurate assessment. The fact was, he had more or less transferred Franz's daily schedule to his own planner. It was a strange manner of mourning his roommate's slumber in the hospital, but the teal-haired fellow was frequently guilty of thinking too much.

Franz did so much for the school, that Howl would have felt guilty for when his friend woke up. The world inside of Hillworth's gates would have spun into utter chaos, and Franz would be heartbroken. It was Howl's duty to ensure such did not happen. It was Howl's duty to ensure that Hillworth remained as beautiful as Franz had made it be. Howl did not want to abandon his own activities, but with everything considered, he only had a very minimal amount of time for himself, and that was Fencing practice.

For a moment, the lad took a seat upon a bench and set the planner upon his lap. His eyes finally drifted away from pages he had been memorizing and was able to see something that appealed to him.

Honeysuckle?

When was the last time that he had been able to appreciate a plant? The cactus he purchased for Franz's hospital room was nothing the teal-haired lad could appreciate, at least, not until it bloomed eventually. Carefully, he stood himself up again and approached, failing to notice the current occupant. His fingers delicately touched upon a vine so it would curl around the appendage gently.

"Hello, Howl."

The merry voice sounded by somewhere near the boy's knees. When he looked, he would find a curly-haired, bright faced girl smiling toothily up at him. Vanessa had recognized the girly boy the instantly, because there could be no mistaking that long teal hair. She had never seen it on anyone else.

The last time they'd met, Super Van valiantly rescued Howl from the sharp teeth of a hungry dog. His pants had taken the brunt of the attack, and Super Van had not been able to save them, but he was very nice afterwards and bought her tea. Vanessa forgot that he would not know her in her civilian clothes, and remembered him fondly as the kind boy with the big vocabulary who hadn't laughed at her ambitions.

He looked sad. She wondered why.

"It's a nice day, isn't it?"

Vanessa sat up and patted the ground beside her, invited him to sit. She held the daisies up to her nose and sniffed them again.

"Hello, Howl."

Having expected nobody to greet him, nobody to know him by name to say the least, the teal-haired fellow was quite surprised by the sudden greeting. Not letting such surprise touch his features, he cooly turned to face the one who had spoken to him. The girl had short red locks of hair and golden yellow eyes that were actually familiar.

His mind did not drift back to any scenario dealing with dogs or tea. He did not recall the attempted super hero. No, instead his mind managed to find another event where this short-haired girl's face seemed familiar. Instead of a cafe, there was a ballroom. Instead of a dog, there was a man and a woman. The woman specifically his lovely mother. Howl did not have the pleasure of meeting the man, face to face, but he remembered everything he had seen. His eyes had managed to stray every so often as his mother spun about the dance floor, and he had managed to notice a young lady who was watching the pair in a similar fashion to how he had been.

"...I do not believe we were formally introduced at the Debutante Ball, Miss." He did not mention it, but he did muse that it was possible his mother had spoken of him, and the man (obviously this young lady's father) had mentioned it to her in turn.

Though his features still had remnants of sadness lingering, he still had to mind his own manners. His fingers reached out, inviting the girl to place her own within his grasp.

The mention of the day only received a neutral response. "It is a matter of opinion, is it not, Miss?" He did not take up the invitation to take a seat. It would most likely result in grass stains.

As far as Vanessa knew, she had never been formally introduced to anyone before. She blinked up at Howl and was amused, as always, by the way he refused to speak like a regular joe.

But then, she reasoned, his name wasn't Joe. Possibly all boys named Howl with girly green-blue hair talked like this- like a gentleman, or a super-villain. Remembering, somewhat fondly, that she hadn't be able to explain why she believed him to be a good guy, Vanessa couldn't help but keep smiling.

"My name is Vanessa," she said promptly, kicking herself for forgetting that he wouldn't know her without spandex and a cape, and shook his outstretched hand.

Except for the pretty yellow dress she'd worn to Jada's debut, there wasn't a single scrap of clothing in Vanessa's closet that wasn't either torn or patched or stained. It was impossible, when your favourite things were cruising around on a skateboard, setting off fireworks and fighting crime, to keep anything in one piece.

Something about his expression and that tone, which was undeniably polite, made her pause. She hugged her knees to her chest, fingers still wrapped around that bouquet, and craned her neck so that she could look up at him.

"Are you okay?"

Somehow, she didn't think so.

Without a last name, Howl was forced to address the redhead by her first name. However, it did not mean he had to be informal about it. "It is a pleasure, Miss Vanessa." Normally his hand would have slid her hand to his lips for a brief and light kiss, but with the manner she had taken his hand, shaken it, and soon enough was done, the opportunity did not present itself.

The girl's prompting seemed to go ignored, but Howl had noticed it. He just chose to avoid the subject. Instead, he noted what the girl had in her possession.

"You know, it is rather rare to see someone with a bouquet these days that do not include roses. It amazes me how some flowers get put onto such a high pedestal, leaving the quaint beauties, such as the delicate daisy, in their shadows." He hadn't meant to, but it almost felt as if what he had just said was a metaphor for himself and his current situation.

In an effort to ignore that realization, he moved forward with a simple prompt. "So, Miss Vanessa, is there a special reason for your flowers?"

Miss Vanessa. Golden eyes sparkled in response to that title, and the girl that they belonged to could not suppress a delighted giggle. Howl's persistent formality and impressive manners made him a joy to talk to. He amused her.

"A special reason?" Vanessa, confused, blinked up at Howl from where she sat. She was still struggling to digest the other things that he'd said. If there were any metaphors, they were lost on this simple-minded girl. However, Vanessa did manage to glean something out of Howl's little speech.

He liked flowers.

Aware of the way that he had avoided her earlier question, Vanessa chewed softly on the inside of her lip and considered the flowers that she held. She had picked them up because they were pretty. That wasn't really very special.

A thought struck her. Thrilling to her own brilliance, Vanessa turned suddenly towards Howl, and thrust the bouquet of daisies towards him with an enthusiastic sweep of her arm.

"They're for you!"

Howl seemed to need cheering up. It was worth a shot.

A single brow rose a bit in silent question to the girl's response as he caught the flowers against his body as delicately as he could manage. He rather obviously did not seem to believe her statement about the flowers being for him.

"That is quite kind of you, Miss Vanessa, but please forgive me for having suspicions as to the validity of that statement. It does seem a bit strange to have flowers prepared for someone that you only met a few moments ago."

His eyes did sympathetically fall upon the cheery little bouquet. The flowers would inevitably wither without a chance to experience any more life beyond the life in a bouquet. His preference had always fallen with potted flowers, for they the chance to continue life for longer. It would be foolish to think something could live forever.

"However, do not think that the sentiment to share your flowers is unappreciated. As I said before, it really is quite kind of you to offer." Making certain none of the petals had been jostled too much with her tossing of the bouquet, Howl extended the small collection of flowers to the girl once more. "I would feel quite guilty taking flowers from a young lady in such a fashion."

Howl's doubt was not misplaced. Vanessa had not collected the bouquet with the intention of giving it to anyone. She had thought, initially, that she would take the daisies home and put them in a vase. They could have served as a nice centre piece for their kitchen table until the time that they shrivelled and died.

But they were for Howl now, because he needed them more than she did. Even if they were only flowers.

"I didn't have them prepared," came Vanessa's honest reply, "I found them. But, I would like you to have them. They're yours."

She smiled to see Howl with them, and shook her head when he tried to give them back, "You're not taking them from me."

If he had tried, Vanessa probably would have punched him. Or maybe she wouldn't have. It would take, she suspected, an awfully desperate (or very silly) person to try and steal a bouquet of daisies.

She got slowly to her feet, brushed some grass off the seat of her pants, and looked him in the eye. "I am giving them to you."

The girl shook her head, and came up with at least 3 different ways to essentially say that she was not taking the flowers back. She definitely seemed to have a rather strong personality. If he was a more stubborn man, he might have thrust the flowers in her arms, but alas, that would ruin the already dying plants. However, he knew such would be too brutish for his own tastes, so he just took the flowers up against his body and cradled them in a caring manner.

He could have mentioned again how much he appreciated her kindness, but he figured that would make the conversation a bit too circular at the moment. He'd mention her kindness, she'd mention to think nothing of it, and they wouldn't get anywhere in the conversation. So instead, he simply nodded to her, then pushed along in the conversation.

"Might I ask, Miss Vanessa, what sorts of activities do you participate in to keep yourself entertained? Do you have any particular hobbies?"

A strong personality, indeed. Vanessa would have beamed to know that he thought such wonderful things of her. There was, in the world, only one thing that she admired more than power-- and that was goodness. She had always strived for both.

"Hobbies?" Vanessa grinned toothily at him, pleased by the way he insisted on calling her 'Miss,' and gestured fantastically with her hands; mimed holding a pair of drumsticks, and rocked on several imaginary cymbals, "I listen to music, and play the drums."

They were loud. Vanessa felt akin to them.

"And, uh, I…" she hesitated, and caught herself heartbeats away from confessing to her secret second life as Super Van. Anonymity was important. Howl himself had taught her that. "Skateboard. I skateboard loads."

"What about you Mister Howl? What do you do for fun?"
PostPosted: Sat Dec 04, 2010 11:51 am

Ah, so she was one of those types. He did not let it show that he wasn't fond of drummers or fond of skateboarders. No, he just looked ever thoughtful, nodding his head with each hobby she listed. Howl was quite certain what he considered to be music and what Miss Vanessa thought to be music would be two completely conflicting notions.

When the conversational ball was bounced back into his side of the conversational tennis court, he was more than willing to share with her what he'd be willing to let her know. "I am rather fond of the written word, so I do enjoy writing. However, it is not in the manner of putting idea to paper as it is forming the letters to look as elegant as possible." Well, that was a fancy way of saying he liked calligraphy.

"I am also quite interested in the sport of fencing. I will assure you, Miss Vanessa, that I know a great deal, but I do not have a natural talent for it." He hoped to god she knew what fencing was. Something about her seemed so unpolished that it seemed possible she wouldn't understand that fencing meant sword play.

"I am not certain if you picked up on this already, but I am quite fond of gardening." With a nod, he returned the conversational ball back to Vanessa. "I think that about covers it."

It was good that Howl had chosen to explain his writing hobby, because Vanessa wouldn't have understood what he meant otherwise. Calligraphy wasn't a word that she was familiar with. The rest of what he'd said, however, made sense to her. Howl was a pretty boy who liked flowers and drank tea for fun. Of course he'd enjoy making fancy letters, too!

"Fencing? Really?" Vanessa cocked her head to the side, golden eyes widening with surprise, and looked Howl carefully up and down. She was, very clearly, flabbergasted. This was the last thing she'd expected! "I've helped my grandpa do that before. To keep the sheep from wandering off the farm. I'm no expert either, but it was sorta fun. I was little enough back then that I got to ride the ram."

The smile on her face turned wistful. Destiny City had always been Vanessa's home-- the nightly wail of sirens and the occasional voice on the street would forever be her lullaby. But the country was nice too, even though Vanessa didn't thing she'd ever get used to the smell of the farm, because Papa was there. And she didn't get to see Papa very often.

"Gardening's cool," she mused amiably, having gotten over her earlier astonishment, "I plant flowers and put them on our balcony every spring."

If he hadn't been the sort to hide his gut reactions simply out of a need to be polite and maintain appearances, he probably would have sighed heavily, shaking his head and putting his hand up to his temple. His assumption about this Vanessa had been quite on the nose.

Calmly, he instead proceeded to explain what the redhead had clearly misunderstood. "I assure you, that fencing has nothing to do with creating walls to enclose animals or property in, Miss Vanessa. It is a French sport that deals with swords play." He paused to think of an example she would probably be familiar with. "Think of it like the Three Musketeers." It was a bit of a basic example, but in all honesty, it seemed simple was the way to go with this girl. She was kind enough, but she definitely wasn't an intellectual equal.

Vanessa was, in fact, familiar with the story of the Three Musketeers. While she was more of a Gladiator fan by default, Vanessa identified with the legendary motto of Aleandre Dumas's inseparable trio on a very personal level. Something like understanding flashed across the young woman's face, and she flushed a little pink with embarrassment to realize the mistake that she had made.

"Oh," she nodded, understanding, "that's with those skinny swords, right? You fight with them for fun?"

This was something that she could get on board with. Except, if Vanessa were to ever attend a fencing class, she'd probably try to bring a broadsword.

"Are you any good?" Positively dazzling at Howl, Vanessa regarded him curiously with her head tilted to the side.
