So we were jazz running and doing a pass through (Stupidest idea ever) and it's a line of upperclassmen going through freshman (UBER STUPID) and this French Horn freshman veers WAY out, catches my foot and causes me to fall in the middle of a performance. I fell, slid, stood up like a drunk dude, bent over to pick up my mouthpiece and marched on like nothing happened. Also, I landed ON my trumpet >.>

Knowing music without looking is no big deal at all. You're SUPPOSED to be able to do that. Left foot first is so easy and you get put down because you don't do everything perfectly. It's a chain. Our leaders get put down by Directors, they in turn put down the upperclassmen who put down the freshman. BIG OL' BLAME CHAIN!

We don't have the middle school system =P our freshmen are safely locked away in Jr. High. The only thing we have to worry about are sophmores. Which can still be a little inexperianced...

You shouldn't say that! You where a freshman once too. Even if you weren't bad still doesn't mean you should say that about other freshman.

Maybe that's why they're inexperienced.

@Sage: None of my class was horrible and it was our first time marching EVER. Our freshman are simply retarded and cannot learn anything ever. None of them are in step, they get yelled at constantly, can't learn their music. AND they had more experience with ALL of these things than us.

I understand that. I hate people who don't know what there doing, don't practice, and really don't even want to be in band. It kind of makes me want to slap them. Also it seems like kids are just getting less enthusiastic. I really like playing, but we have had to work on like a measure, for like ten minutes because of stupid people.

If I may vouch (I don't know if I spelled that right) for many Freshman in saying that we're not all like that. Just because you have a cruddy Frosh class doesn't mean you should hate on all Freshman.

Personally, my class (band-wise) is divided in half. Half is really unenthusiastic, doesn't care about music, and all around sucks. The other half (the half in which I'm in...), well, we are really passionate about music, are in Wind Ensemble (in fact), and try our hardest to fit the upperclassmen's standards. And hey, I think we do a pretty good job of it.

Anyways, I just feel a need to advocate for the "Freshman who 'aren't'" (to quote my sister, a senior in band). There is hope yet for the youth of to-day!!

Freshmen making mistakes doesn't bother me.
They're freshmen, they're going to make mistakes, get over it. You were at that level once, too, whether you'll admit or not -- granted, you may have picked up on the way things go faster than others, but you all started somewhere.

Being a freshman in college band is completely different from being a freshman in high school band because most people start off with an idea of what they're doing -- even if the marching is stylistically different.

What irritates the hell out of me, though, are the freshman that are trying to give people advice on what to do.
Saying, "Oh, you need to move a step to your left," is one thing. Saying, "Oh, when you do pregame, you need to make sure you blahblahblah."
Seriously, dude? There's a senior who's actually had a spot in pregame for all four years standing right beside you. Let him give everyone advice. You're just a freshman who's an alternate and has done pregame all of once, so shut your mouth.
Granted, I have yet to do pregame, but that doesn't give Devon another freshman the right to tell me what to do or what not to do. I'd rather take advice from my crush a senior any day.

those freeshmen are making mistakes just like you did when you were a freeshmen. remember how the instructors and vets yelled at you for doing something wrong.
give them some time and they all will get it.
also be more suportive give constructive critisim, offer to spen a few minutes after practice helping them.

Um, yeah, TOTAL assumption. While many freshmen may have difficulties falling into step(pun intended) with how marching band or even how concert band works, some may already have experience, from either watching or just being a fast learner, with how things in band get done and can actually carry them out. I was a freshman last year, and, while I was more immature than this year in some topic areas, I was one of the more mature frosh in both the marching and concert band. So chill a little, 'kay?

Actually I never got yelled at. In fact, they actually called me out on my good marching : They did that for most of my freshman class.
