It had been ages since he had seen his own reflection. To be quite frank, he was quite taken aback to see how the seasons had changed him. He felt larger, stronger, and far more sure of his own capabilities... But seeing his reflection for the first time since that lazy day alongside the river, back when he was merely a gangly, uncouth adolescent, was quite an awakening.
His sharp, emerald eyes snapped from the water's surface and his ring-clad ears shifted slightly as he listened for any who might possibly be nearby.
The seasons had been changing steadily and he knew that it was time to head West, to continue along the path he had laid out for the wolves he had rounded up during his travels. It was time to meet with them, to announce his plans, and to get the ball rolling. The pack would be a great one, he had that idea in his mind's eye as it was. He knew this not only because of the ideals he had firmly set in his mind, but because of the wolves that he knew were joining him. Each was different and brought a new aspect to the pack, but all were valuable. From Kai, the other southern wolf with a sound mind and kind disposition, to the sharp minded Cassidy, to the odd storyteller.
His thoughts rambled slightly within the safety of his mind, but he kept his posture stiffened and his body ready to move at the slightest sound. He had the feeling that he was not completely alone, but he had not yet pinpointed what had given him such a feeling.

One nice thing about Marion was that she tended to give a wolf a good deal of notice as to her arrival. On her own today, she had commenced to set off through the woods, smelling and smelling for something completely new and different, and drawing ever closer to the territory of Verdauga's nascent pack. She was on the trail of something, certainly - she could smell a salt laid onto the earth, something young and strong and sharp, and it intrigued her enough to bring her within hearing range of the violet alpha; his waiting senses would begin to pick up far-off snaps of offended branches, followed shortly by a heralding chorus of suspicious birds, calling sharply to one another to note the bear-coated wolf's passing.

After a few silent, still moments, he turned his head in the direction of the approaching stranger. He heard her before he saw her, the hail of birds and the odd snap of a twig didn't make her hard to pinpoint at all. And when he did finally see her, he had to admit that he was impressed. Noisy, though she was, she had the look of a strong creature, large like he. And the pelt of a bear was on her back. That definitely caught his interest.
He didn't speak right away. Instead, he watched silently, a splash of violet against earthy tones. After he was content with simply observing, he tilted his head back and let out a quick, low howl. It was merely a greeting, neither aggressive or meek, letting her know that he was close by.

As the smell she was trailing distilled, beginning to say clearly that a wolf had come along this route, Marion's lumbering gait grew more focused - a wolf!, she sang internally, her imagination tearing off in several unlikely directions. And presumably it was her imagination (a Goblin King! A Sea Wolf!) that kept her running solely on her nose as she barreled into sight of Verdauga. His polite howl hitched her step and brought her to a bemused halt, and for two or three heartbeats she gawked in relative silence (a pair of determined wrens tagged along to continue their scolding) and the big purple fellow, pleasantly vivid and with rings in his ears!
She caught up with herself momentarily, though, and cocked her head, smiling, and waving her brushy tail like a friendly banner. "Good afternoon," she shouted cheerily across the short span of forest between them, "do you live here?" Though she knew it was polite, she couldn't quite bring herself to apologize for any possible trespassing - she certainly wasn't sorry, and anyone who needed to hear her say it anyway was unconscionably fussy.

"Afternoon right back t'ya~" He was slightly taken aback by her friendly manner, something that he had grown not to expect in his experiences with life thus far, though he was still a fairly young male. Already, he considered her to be a refreshing change of pace compared to some of the meetings he had had in the past. He did note, however, that she didn't seem too terribly worried about territory borders. Perhaps her size, however, left her little to worry about, besides the threat of an entire pack's patrol jumping down her back. Given her appearance, though, he made the assumption that she was quite capable of handling herself.
"None too far from 'ere, yerself?" He tilted his head slightly, maintaining his proud posture as he spoke in his typical drawl. Despite the formalities of his stature, his dark tail wagged behind him, spurred on by her own cheerful greeting.

Marion beamed, taking his friendly wag as a go-ahead to shoot for a better talking distance. She trotted, rather disconcertingly nimble for all her apparent bulk, to stand a few feet away, almost brazenly unbothered about tromping through a potentially-claimed territory. "I'm just sort of passing through," she mused, her dark eyes flickering around the area almost distractedly. "I thought I'd keep traveling 'til I ran into something new and different, but it turns out that nothing is different anywhere." She scowled emphatically, overwhelmed for a moment with disgust at the leaf-dappled forest she could not escape. But Verdauga's rings caught her eye again, and she abandoned her anger without another thought. "Is there a pack here? Where did you get those rings?"

He didn't seem too bothered by her stamping, partly because he hadn't quite reached the territory that he and Kai had agreed on and partly because for a budding alpha, he tended to be rather lax unless a situation called for otherwise. He did, however, seemed slightly amused by her brazen and cheerful behavior. She seemed like a likable creature and he made the hasty assumption that he could easily get along with her so long as he didn't detect something darker beneath her semblance.
"I ain't much interestin' 'round these parts. Y'gotta be careful if y'keep 'eading east 'cos yer bound t'run into some wolves what got sticks jammed up their rumps, th' way they act. Dangerous, iff'n ya get me, least that's what I've 'eard while wanderin' an' the like." He beamed proudly as he felt her eyes washing over his little trinkets, spoils of his activities over the past season.
"Aye, there's one formin' a bit o' ways down the river, t' the west. It's mine. An' these ol' things?" He wasn't too good at faking modesty at times. It was evident that he was proud of the golden hued decorations on his ears and paws. "I took 'em."

"You took 'em?" Marion's face contorted again, a striking picture of envy, but the everyday kind that is more or less inevitable for youngest pups. More than anything, it seemed, what Marion was jealous of was that Verdauga got to be Verdauga. "They are the coolest things I've ever seen," she told him with a fierce solemnity, meeting his eye to make sure she was driving the point home. But!
Some little internal clock broke her attention, and she sloughed off her costume of Covetous Little Sister, her tail swinging up to mark the patter of potential questions crowding for her mouth. "I don't know anybody that makes a habit of stealing, why do you do it? How hard is it, do you have to fight a lot? Is it harder than usual to steal from YOU?" Ugh, too far, probably. Her brow furrowed as she irritably reined her thoughts back in. "Not to bombard you, though. I'm sorry."
