Klaus hated lunchtime. Absolutely, completely, and thoroughly despised it. Yes, he understood the necessity of consuming food for energy. However, Klaus had a problem with the way that lunchtime at any school always turned into some kind of social experiment. The large number of tables were filled with different social cliques, each judging each other and the entire room was filled with the drone of hundreds of voices talking about useless stuff that had absolutely no importance: gossip. In other words, it was a delightful forty minute glimpse of hell everyday. It was a recipe for disaster.

Defying the standards that would have classified him as a "nerd", Klaus always elected to sit by himself. He'd perfected the art of driving others away by either giving them the silent treatment or rattling off chemical equations until the person went away bleeding from the ears. It was a helpful practice, but it was tiresome. Of course, there was also the ever-constant threat of bullies that kept him on his toes and made him feel like a paranoia patient until lunch was over.

Still, Klaus had managed to skirt the bullies today and weasel his way to a small and empty table next to the windows. He had a book out in front of him, his pencil and notebook nearby for notes, and he was oblivious to the world.

Fiona was the opposite of Klaus, she loved lunchtime because it was a nice break from classes and allowed her to chat with friends that didn't have classes with. Though at the same time it allowed her to sneak away and be alone if she felt the need. Today was one of those says where she was by herself, curled up in the windowsill of one of the larger windows, right next to the table that Klaus had chosen to sit at.

In the redhead's lap was a book on biology, opened to a chapter on heredity. in her left hand was a bag of carrots and in her right a carrot she was munching on. Fiona was a nerd herself but not in the same way as the boy at the table. She wasn't socially awkward, most of the time, but she certainly had the tendencies to go off on tangents that no one seemed to care about and she was often oblivious to their lack of interest.

It couldn't be helped.

She lifted her head from the book she had be engrossed in when she caught sight of him sitting down. He was alone and that made her frown. Maybe he didn't have friends. Or maybe, from the look of him, he didn't like people or was too much of a nerd to attract people. Well if his mission was to repel, it didn't work on her.

She closed the book, after inserting her book mark, grabbed up her belongings, walked over to him and sat across the table from him. "What are you reading?"

A voice broke through Klaus's reverie and despite his attempts at ignoring it, he found that his attention was broken. He glanced up with a glare and a stinging retort on his tongue, ready to tell whoever it was that they could find their own table. He was rather surprised then to find that it was not many gossiping girls, but just one who was obviously attempting to ask him a question.

Klaus blinked a few times, wondering why she'd joined him at his table. There was an empty table right next to his. Why hadn't she sat there? And why was she trying to talk to him? It mystified him. No one talked to him unless they had to.

It took him a moment to remember what her question had been and he hesitated before answering.

"Rereading, actually. Charles Darwin's The Origin of the Species," he said, his voice condescending and mildly disapproving. "Can I help you?" he added in a half-hearted attempt to be nice.

Fiona didn't gossip, she didn't feel the need to. She'd listen to what the other girls would say, smile and nod then go back to whatever she was doing or talking about in the first place. More often than not the conversation went back to whatever rumor they just heard in the hallway between classes. No, Fee didn't care much for gossip because heavens knew what ridiculous things that were said about her. Not that she cared anyway, it was hard to get the girl down about anything.

While Klaus was busy wondering why on earth she had chosen to sit with him, let alone talk to him, Fiona was busy wondering why he had chosen to read the book he was reading.

"Oooh, is it really interesting?" Fiona asked setting her elbow on the table and resting her chin on her hand. "I think Darwinism is pretty interesting," she commented with a soft smile. "I take it you're a fan, what's your take on the concept of survival of the fittest?" She was genuinely interested in hearing what he had to say. Listening to gossip all the time wasn't that fun.

At his question she frowned slightly. "Oh, not really. Just thought you'd maybe like some company...And I've seen you around a bit but you're always by yourself."

Klaus was still mystified by the fact that someone was talking to him. Not just someone, a female someone. And not just talking to him, but choosing to talk to him. She thought he wanted company? Well, not really. He was fine on his own. He was used to it. He couldn't help but be a bit suspicious and wondered if this Fiona had an ulterior motive.

Wait, what? She was a Darwinist? Well that was a new one. Still, she seemed interested, so he grudgingly answered.

"Yes, yes it is interesting. I guess you could say I'm a fan, though that isn't really what I would say. I do find his concept of natural selection to be logical and well supported. You don't look like the type of person who would study Darwin," he added, a bit rudely. He didn't mean it in a rude way, but unfortunately, that was often how Klaus came off.

Fiona didn't seem to realize that Klaus probably would've preferred to be alone. She figured that if he didn't flat out tell her to leave, or make really obvious hints, then she was welcome to stay. So far neither of the above had happened, so here she was chatting away with him like it was no big thing. Because to Fiona Watson it was no big thing, to anyone else? Maybe it was.

"If you aren't a fan then what would you call yourself?" She asked leaning her cheek into her hand a little more, like she was really interested in what he had to say. It was always interesting to see things from another perspective.

She frowned slightly at his statement before sitting up straighter, smiling and then, surprisingly, laughing lightly. "No, I suppose I don't," she agreed shaking her head a little playfully. "I don't look like the kind of person to do many of the things that I do," she commented with a shrug. "But you'd be surprised, appearances don't really tell much about a person."

It was something she had come to learn very well recently. Just because someone seemed nice didn't mean they really were and just because someone looked nice and innocent certainly didn't mean you should let your guard down. That was the kind of thing that could easily get you killed.

"But I am interested, while Darwin isn't exactly my favorite person to read about, science is certainly a field of interest and his theories certainly apply to life now so I made it a point to study him."

Yes, Fiona Watson was most certainly a nerd in many aspects and while she wasn't the same type of nerd as Klaus no one could say she just wasn't one.

Klaus blinked a few times, and wondered absently if he was beginning to resemble a stunned fish. This girl didn't seem like the type who was interested in science. He should have known not read a book by its cover or to judge someone on their appearance, but he did.

Returning to the matter at hand, Klaus forced himself to respond.

"I guess I would call myself a critical and somewhat grudging admirer. I don't agree with everything that Darwin writes but I do appreciate his contributions to the field." He shrugged off the topic and tried to focus on what she was saying.

"Exactly," he responded to her last statement, attempting to ignore what she had said about appearances as it pertained all too closely to his own train of thought.

Klaus had to admit, grudgingly, that the girl was smarter than she appeared and it looked as though any attempt to ignore her would not make her go away. With a sigh, he closed to book and turned his full attention to the girl. That done, he didn't really know how to proceed. He wasn't really used to the whole 'social interaction' scene.

"Who are you?" he asked. He could have phrased that a bit more politely, but Klaus was rather oblivious to his own tone of voice.

"I find it interesting how often people relate Darwin to other subjects," she commented thoughtfully tapping her chin as she spoke. "Though his contributions to biology are quite admirable," she stated almost dreamily. Biology was her core subject, the one she was perusing a major in so it was important to know about figures such as Darwin. "Though I do not agree with those that relate his theory to things such as marketing or business and the like," she wrinkled her nose in what appeared to be disgust as she tossed her hair over her shoulder.

When he so bluntly asked her who she was she just smiled sweetly at him, giggling a bit as she placed her arms on the table and leaned forward. "My name is Fiona Watson, I am a biology major," she told him as she extended a petite hand out to him to shake. "It's a pleasure to meet you," she paused thinking quietly if she knew his name prior to this meeting. She had seen him around campus more than a few times but had never caught his name.

"And you are?"
