Klaus muttered quietly under his breath, pushed his glasses up with one finger, and readjusted his bag on his shoulder. It really wasn't fair that his parents hadn't warned him that they'd be working late and wouldn't be able to pick him up from school. Really, they could have at least warned him. Had he known, he could have stayed late and finished that other experiment in chemistry. The professor had finally given in and allowed him to work on whatever he wanted in the back of the classroom. He'd completed all of the assignments a week into the semester and had been very disgruntled when the teacher had not anything else for him to do.

Or if the classroom had been closed, he could have taken the dreaded bus. Public transportation of any kind was a thing that nightmares were made of, but at least it would have spared him the two mile walk back to his house. Squaring his shoulders again and running his hand through his hair, Klaus attempted to find some kind of "silver lining" or "bright side". At least he had his chemistry set and his computer at home. He could continue on his latest research topic and finish typing up that secondary dissertation. Plus, he would have the house to himself for a few hours, which meant less distractions.

Klaus decided to take the shortcut through the small neighborhood playground nearby. It would cut some time off of his walk and it was unlikely, with the pre-storm weather, that there would be any kids out playing. Well, at least he could hope that they wouldn't be there.

Nathan Darrow was bored, as always. He had left Tony's car in at the shop to repair some damages he had 'accidentally' gotten on the car while he was off fighting that first Youma with Sailor Rosalind. That had been nothing but trouble: an annoying girl, an annoying youma, getting run over by said annoying girl to kill said youma, and on top of all that the car he had 'borrowed' came out with very obvious evidence of its misuse.

Of course, Tony was bound to notice something when the repair bill popped up on his credit, but that was another thing all together. For now, Nate was totally in the clear: he had handled the situation.

So, lacking wheels to get anywhere interesting, Nate had brought his paintball gun to the public park, to waste a few hours doing nothing. He was in a bad mood, wanting to hang out with Angela but finding her busy, so he had to settle for keeping himself entertained.

And the only way to do that? Picking on random strangers in the park. And he had found a great target. A classic nerd, complete with glasses, trucking it with a miserable look on his face like he didn't want to be in the dreaded 'outside' where the sunlight could get him. Perfect.

Slinking his way behind some bushes, he crouched down and lifted his paintball gun, aiming at the back of the poor schoolboy's head. He grinned, knowing he was a pretty good shot, and pulled the trigger to let the little pellets full of paint fly.

A feeling of dread settled into Klaus's stomach though he wasn't sure why. Yet. However, something told him that he was in trouble. His bully sense was tingling.

A sound came from behind him followed by sharp pain on the back of his head and a splatting sound. With mounting feelings of horror, Klaus reached back and felt the back of his hair. It was wet. Bringing his hand back around he saw that it was covered with colorful paint. Paint that was now dripping down the back of his head. Paint that someone had shot at him.

Klaus swore under his breath and turned around eyes blazing and fists clenched. That's when he saw him.

This was your typical bully. He was dressed in typical douchebag style and had the typical douchebag haircut too. He held a paintball gun in one hand and was grinning cockily at Klaus.

Yup, Klaus was royally screwed.

"Seriously? Can't a guy walk home without getting assaulted by a delinquent with too much time on his hands?" asked Klaus bitterly, not bothering to think before he spoke. He might have been brilliant, a genius really, when it came to book smarts, but Klaus had no common sense and apparently no sense of self-preservation.

Nate moved from the bushes, resting his gun on his shoulder and grinning at his target as he turned around to see the source of the paint now coloring his hair. If it was worth anything, Nate thought it looked great.

But then, he was bias. It was like admiring his own work of art.

"I dunno, I've never had a problem with that," he said coolly, shaking his head, "I guess only guys wearing bowties have to deal with those kinds of problems."

He moved closer, walking casually, without a look of menace to him. Some bullies liked to work by fear and intimidation, and while he did that with the best of them and found it fun, sometimes just being calm and antagonistic worked just as well. He tilted his head at the bespectacled boy, not looking impressed.

"And I don't have any time on my hands. I'm fully occupied in exactly what I wanted to do today." He leveled his gun and shot at the boy's chest rather suddenly, and from close range. That wasn't very nice, or fair, but since the kid had decided to stop and challenge him, Nate thought it a good idea to teach him what came of that.

Klaus should have been intimidated. In fact, he should have been terrified. A part of his brain registered that fact, but that intelligent part was overshadowed by two thoughts. The first was that he really didn't have time for this. The second was that he was sick and tired of being bullied.

"Personally, I like bowties. It adds a touch of sophistication that so many people lack these days," said Klaus with a sigh. It wasn't like he had any voice in the choice of uniform, but he wasn't going to accept a comment like that from some dumb neanderthal.

Klaus froze when the boy aimed his gun at him and winced painfully as paint bullets spattered his chest. He was sure to have a rather spectacular bruise and this particular uniform was definitely ruined.

Gripping his chest, Klaus was disgusted by the feel of the wet paint and wondered if he dared to run. It was likely that the goon would follow him though, and he already was going to have a fun time explaining the ruination of his uniform to his parents. He just wasn't up for the bully discussion again.

"How nice, thank you so much for adding such delightful color to my uniform," said Klaus bitterly. "Now that you've made your point, I'm leaving. I hope you have a wonderful day." The sarcasm dripped off his tongue and he turned to leave.

"Sophistication? Where do you think you are, a ball?"

Nate laughed, watching as the other boy tested the paint that now decorated his shirt. It was bright, made that way to be clearly seen in a paintball fight, though Nate used the pellets for a different purpose than intended use.

Picking on nerds.

"Now what point was I trying to make, again? Here I was, thinking we could just say hi and hang out, let you see what I like to do, invite you to paintball, and you're trying to run off already."

He sighed.

Of course the only paintball he would invite Klaus to would involve him playing the target, which he was already. Still, the kid didn't seem to have much of a sense of humor about being hit with the paintball gun so far.

Klaus turned at the mocking sound of the bully's voice and raised an eyebrow. Gesturing down at himself, he asked, "Do I honestly look like the paintball type to you? And no, I do not enjoy being a human target, but thanks awfully."

Klaus knew that he was probably pushing it too far, but he was already running late, his uniform was ruined, and his precious research time would be taken up by a much needed shower. He felt the pain dripping down the back of his head and he grimaced again.

"Thank you for that nice demonstration of 'what you like to do', but I'm pretty sure I've seen enough. You have good aim, but I have work to be doing like any honest person, so I think I will be leaving now."

He didn't really think that the neanderthal was going to let him just leave, but he sure was going to try.

Nate laughed. What a party pooper. But what else did he expect to get from a guy like this? Actually, this was exactly what he was expecting, which was why he was enjoying it so much. Bullying was an art, and he was working on mastering it.

Despite all those commercials on TV telling him to stomp it out.

Maybe it was juvenile, but to him it meant more than just making someone feel bad. It meant learning about the worst sides of people. What made them angry, what made them sad. Different ways people handled stress and anger.

And yeah, it was really funny most of the time.

"You sure are in a hurry," Nathan said. He picked up his gun again, pointing it at Klaus one more time. This time, though, he fully intended on taking the shot. He kept it trained on the young man, picking what he wanted to shoot for. Not the face. As much of a jerk as he was, he only shot people in the face with his paintgun when they were really asking for it.

Luckily, Klaus was not. His pants, however, were not off limits.
