The grey lioness was confused at the best of times, but she'd been more confused than ever lately. Bahari, the nice grey hyena, had slowly and carefully explained that her babies were also Manyara's babies, kind of, and Manyara was supposed to take care of them and look out for them. The word nanny had been mentioned, but Manyara was vague on the concept.

Then little Igola had come along. Unlike the other cubs, he was interested in Manyara. He liked her, which delighted her, and confused her at the same time. The adult hyenas seemed disapproving, which was strange considering they had told Manyara to watch the pups in the first place! It was all very confusing.

Right now the grey lioness had some time to herself to think. The hyenas were off doing whatever important things they liked to do, and had left her to her own devices. She plodded along, frowning in concentration, trying to make sense of the bewildering mess of her life.

One of the kinder names he was called by his siblings was stupid. The female that gave birth to him would often watch him with a confused pitying look before shaking her head and looking at her sister as if to ask what can we do? Igola heard the whispers and dismissed them as unimportant.

Only one creature's opinion mattered to the dark little male, and that was his mother Manyara. Oh she said she wasn't his mother, but she did all the things a mother should do. She held him when he had a bad dream, comforted him when he had a boo-boo, and willingly shielded him from his more rambunctious siblings. In short, she loved him and wasn't that what a mother was suppose to do?

His ears perked as he caught side of her soft grey hide. hurrying along he gave a soft yip, just enough to catch her attention, " Mother!"

Even though she was lost in her careful musings, the yip was enough to catch her full attention. The black hyena's affection confused her, but Manyara had come to adore Igola. The grey lioness beamed, turning to look at the little hyena.

In front of the adults she might have tried to shush him for calling her 'mother', but they were alone. After a quick glance around to make sure no adult hyenas were listening in, Manyara called cheerfully to her 'son'. "Igola! What're you doing out alone? Other pups no fun today?" In Manyara's opinion, the other pups were definitely no fun (privately she thought of them as Bossy, Snotty, Yippy, and Chatty) but she didn't want to say that aloud and make Igola think badly of his siblings.

Igola giggled softly as he trotted up to her side. "When are they ever fun? I was learning some new scents when I caught yours and wanted to come be with you." He gazed up at her with love in his dark eyes.

She hard warned him many times not to be so openly affectionate when the adults where around, but it was hard. He wanted to punish the other pups for being mean to her and scold the adults for calling her names, but he couldn't. It would just make them hurt her more, so instead he tried to find her like this, just to two of them.

"So what shall we do today? OH! I know! You can teach me to stalk!"

Manyara couldn't help grinning at Igola's judgment of his siblings. They were annoying, awful little things indeed. It was a fine day that she wasn't tasked with looking after them. Manyara had idly thought that maybe they would be less awful once they got a little older, but she couldn't picture it. They would be just as awful, only in adult bodies. What a nightmare.

The grey lioness considered. She wasn't much of a hunter, having never been taught by her mother. Sneaking around ... well, she could probably do that. She nodded. "Okay. We'll try stalkin' some stuff."

Manyara frowned thoughtfully, dredging up what she knew of stalking. "Okay ... you gotta stay out of sight. So if there's grass, hunker down and sneak along."

Igola nodded as he followed her instructions, crouching close to the ground, his dark coloring aiding him in blending to the shadows. "Like this momma?" He wanted so bad to make her proud of him...and maybe if he could show she taught him things that were useful the mean ones would stop whispering about seperating them.

Christopher Johnson
Manyara studied Igola's crouch, nodding. "Yup, you got it. Perfect!" It seemed like it would be a lot easier for the little hyena to hunt than her. At dusk and dawn she could blend in pretty well, but at other times - especially at night - her fur was a giveaway. A faint worry passed through Manyara's mind that maybe she wasn't teaching Igola to hunt in the correct hyena way, and the adults might be angry. But sneaking was probably pretty much the same for every species, so it seemed safe. "Now you gotta sneak along and try not to rustle any grass or make any noise. Like you're sneakin' outta the den without waking up your brothers and sisters." Manyara laughed.

Keantha
The little male giggled, " Like I do allthe time?" Never the less, he slowly and crawfully crawled forward, his big ears twitching like mad so as to catch every sound possible.

Christopher Johnson
Igola was a sneaky little thing, that was for sure. Manyara was very admiring. "Yup, just like that!" What next? It would be easier if there were something around for Igola to hunt, but prey generally wasn't very cooperative. "So once you've got as close as you can get, then you jump out 'n chase whatever it is till you catch it. You gotta get as close as you can before it sees you, so you don't have to run a long way."

Keantha
"ok..." With a sudden lunge, he nipped at her foot playfully giggling. " I got momma!!" His eyes danced as he pranced around her front legs, his smile warm and bright. Others thought he was stupid or damaged, in truth he just was quiet and thoughtful, prefering to see all angles before making his choices.

Christopher Johnson
Manyara laughed at the n**, watching her 'son' dance about with an amused smile. "When you grow up you're gonna be a terror," she said fondly. Why couldn't the rest of the hyenas be like Igola? Okay, so maybe Igola wasn't that great at being a hyena, but he was infinitely more tolerable than the rest of that brood.

Keantha
"I will never be a terror momma." His smile slid away as he gave her a very serious look, way to serious for as young a pup as he was. "I will grow up to be strong and vicious if I have to...but only so that I can protect others."

Christopher Johnson
Manyara's smile faded slightly too. She hadn't meant to upset little Igola. He was already a little too serious for a pup, in her opinion. She reached out a paw and ruffed his scrap of mane. "I just meant to prey animals, Igola," she said, her cheerful smile returning. "Nope, you don't have a drop of mean in you. You'll always be good."

Keantha
He smiled again slowly and licked her leg, " well..ok I can be a terror to prey animals! That just means I can make sure you eat well." He snuggled to her warm side with a soft sigh of contentment.
