In Fire emblem, age totally matters. Whether you were a baby when the first came out or just picking up the remake, you know that this game is great. But what you can't know is just how the great the game is and was if you only have the later versions.
I grew up with sacred stones(8 ), and I thought that it was amazing. then I found out it was the eighth game in the series, and I cried. Unless nintendo feels like remaking every game in the series (which my feelings towards shadow dragon are below par for a fire emblem game), then I doubt I will ever be able to make up for all the game and strategy lost.
Because of sacred stones, I can't get used to the idea of the other games not letting you level up characters inbetween which has really thrown me off. So tell me FEF, how much will I miss out on?

I know, it's really really cool to get to level your characters in between chapters. Fire Emblem 7 came out first, so those that played 7 first were thrown off by the leveling on the map thing. But! 7 and 9 have really really really good stories. You would miss the awesomeness if you didn't play them... D= I will tell you they are epic.

But! It's your choice. =)

7,8,9,10 and the remake of 1 are the only Fire Emblems currently in the states. There are ways to play old ones online through simulators if you get people who know how to do it. I don't. XD

Oh! And my opinion of Shadow dragon is that it sucks. I would definitely recommend at least 7. The box just says Fire Emblem. It has a picture of a guy that looks like Roy from Super Smash Brothers Melee (Roy's dad, Eliwood), a blue haired guy (Hector) and a chick (Lyndis). =D That game was my favorite.

It's unfortunate that you started with FE8 because that can really spoil you with it's added features. But a lot of "hard-core" FE players (which I semi consider myself to be like) think all the features take away from the game in a way. It makes FE8 too easy (FE8 is too easy even if you never use the tower/ruins/skirmishes during the game). But you can still easily enough purchase FE9-11 in stores, and anything from FE8 and earlier is available on a ROM, which I would recommend.

Like Nino said, you should definitely at least try out FE7. The plot is FEFabulous! There's still a whole world of FE games to explore!

... You'll miss out on a lot if you don't play FE7. I mean... Not only will you not get half of our references (as in, Magegirl Nino, Nomad Rath, Fire Dragon, Nils, etc.), but it's an incredible plot (as FD called it, FEFabulous 3nodding ). I mean, when you finally figure everything out, and you prepare for the final battle, it's like BAM! burning_eyes ... Yeah. Seriously.

I did a challenge where I played Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones without the skirmishes.

Obby, was that ever amazing! ♥

Skipped the cliched story though, and I played Ephraim mode just because I love to use lance users. Really. Generals, Pegs, Wyverns, Halberdiers/Soldiers, Cavaliers, and armor knights are always finding a good place in my armies. heart

Fire Emblem 7, in my opinion, Is the best of the series. It has a great plot, is actually challenging in hard mode, and you really feel a connection wit the characters (though thats how all FE games are designed). If you cant find the actual game, you could always try to download an emulator, then download the game online.

I recently downloaded the emulator for FE6 (the one with Roy) and it is just epic, seeing all the familiar characters.
If you want to play games such as this, I recccomend going to youtube, and look up some of the videos that tell you how to get it.

Honestly I like all of FE games. Not so much for Shadow Dragon but I really did enjoy 7. Plot was great like everyone said.

Well... besides the fact that the other FE games were all in Japanese... I've played 6-11. And soon... 12.
I also thought it was funny that 11 and 12 are remakes of 1 and 2, I think.

Not quite. FE2 has never had a remake. FE12 is a remake of book two from FE3, which was also a remake of FE1 with a sequel added in. FE11 was a remake of FE1 and book one of FE3.

My first Fire Emblem was FE7, and I think that it's a great game to start your experience with the series with. It has tons of replay value to me at least, and I love the characters and the story. After that, Sacred Stones was easy and the plot and characters seemed to dim a bit. I've played through half of 9, 6, and 11, but none just seem to compare. Especially 11 -__- So, I don't feel like I'm missing out on too much by starting out with 7. If I ever really wanted to play the older ones, I'd get a rom for them.

I did start with 8 though I did go back to play 7, 6, and 4. I have to say that those game's stories are a ton better than that of 8. I find that the characters popped more in those ones than the ones in 8 are. Personally I didn't really cared for the tower or ruins, they had some purpose but you really didn't need it that much.
Out of all the ones I played I would have to say it's a tied between 4 and 7as my favorites in the series. Both had great story, I liked the fact that in 4 you do have a base to protect, and I like all the characters in 7. I would say you should play those games, They are really worth a try.

I miss being able to shove, rescue, moving twice with mounted units, and the auto healing staff users.

XD oh well.... at least I found a cheap way of leveling your characters by boss farming. If they are too weak I can class changing the weakest unit into a temp priest so they can have more of a defense and then they will not be as squishy ^^... XD down side it's time consuming to get the enemy to keep braking there weapons on my Generals... It's going to be a long game.

I just read this topic as it was on the top of the featured posts, I know it's probably dead, but concerning FE11- it's a remake of the first, of course it'd be sub-par compared to the later series, it's like comparing Dragon Warrior for the NES or the Japanese cell phone remake to let's say Dragon Warrior VII. Whilst DWVII is fabulous and infinite > Dragon Warrior, you can still play it and respect the fact that it IS the very first in the series and the start of a legendary title.

And quite frankly, a remake of FE4 wouldn't go down well at all with all the censoring they'd have to do and whatnot and besides, people would moan about it not being exactly like the GBA titles, which <<<<< SNES titles in my opinion.

But those are my personal thoughts, not saying everyone has to agree with me, but I do think FE11 is unappreciated as without it (as in the actual game, not necessarily the remake for DS) there wouldn't be Fire Emblem.

FE11 may be a remake, but that doesn't excuse it from scrutiny or being compared with other modern FE titles. As it was made so much more recently then the original, they should have incorporated more recent features (like support conversations) just as they incorporated more recent mechanics. And as it's a remake, it doesn't get the credit the original does. Without FE11... we wouldn't have a DS title for the series or class changing. We'd still have FE1-10. The original is what deserves respect for what it was at the time and its significance to the series. A remake does not, IMO.

Totally with you on not wanting an FE4 remake, though.
