The boy with glowing hands had not slept well lately. Screams often filled the night and echoed down the halls, as was expected. No matter how 'normal' it was for this place, it took more than a little getting used to. While clutching his own arms, or covering his ears, all night he was wracked with nightmares and waking dreams. Shapeless shadowy forms wandered along the walls and dripped, somehow becoming blood before meeting with the unseen floor.

Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and when the fireflies illuminated his face, he appeared ill and a bit wild-eyed. He had also forgotten to straighten his hair when he rose this... morning? afternoon? he was not sure. Not a lot was filling his mind at present, just a constant droning white noise.

Mills on the other hand was stomping through the halls. Well, at least her stride was a little stronger than it might have been. Why was this? It couldn't have anything to do with her recent acquirement of a warm, long-sleeved sweater. It makes a huge difference when one is not constantly expending energy at all hours of the night, shivering.

"Hey, watch it!" Her alertness apparently did not translate into heightened sense of hearing, and did not save her when she took the corner too confidently. She landed flat on her butt. "What's your problem!"

"Oh... sorry. I wasn't looking where I was going." His head had been down dulled eyes gazing mindlessly at his thong sandals as they scuffed along in front of him, and as a result, the top of his forehead had met her chin, sending them both sprawling. With little expression, he rubbed his swelling face. Too bad the shell doesn't reach my forehead, he thought vaguely. "Er... are you all right, miss?"

"Hmph." Mills glared at him and rubbed her chin. It felt hot and had taken that peculiar sensation of splitting, bleeding flesh. Of course neither had happened, though she knew a bruise when she felt one. The boy looked about her age (how could she know he was several years older when he did not look it?) and worse for wear; perhaps she should go 'easy' on him. "Yeah of course I'm fine. You're a real lightweight for a boy. Aren't they feeding you enough?"

"I don't know... you've seen what they've got in the cafeteria. Would you eat it unless you were starving?"

"Well I hate to break it to ya pal, but you're looking like you should really eat that crap they call cafeteria food..." Mills dusted herself off and offered her hand to help him up.

User Image Spindly fingers had been idly rolling the small, white object across each joint - balancing it at the tip of one clawed fingernail, then flipping it back again. All the while, Lucasta seemed unnaturally fascinated by the movement and could bear to do little else than simply stare with glassy eyes. Her footsteps were carefully silent as she walked, hunched over and brushing a shoulder against the wall. It was surprising she noticed the other two patients at all, what with the concentration she put forward to playing with someone's lost (or forcibly removed) tooth.

Regardless, the very instant she heard voices, the woman's eyes snapped forward and her guiding light was extinguished without missing a beat. The sudden change threw her skeletal figure into shadow as she pressed against the side of the hall, creeping around the corner to get a view of the strangers. There was no logical reason for why she did this, since this particular inhabitant of the asylum seemed to be fearless in the face of others - no, it seemed that she was just up to no good.

There were two 'kids' that her eyes locked upon: a small, exhausted looking boy, and a better-off looking girl who seemed much more at ease with her surroundings. The lampade cocked her head so far to the side that her neck had every right to have broken, with a long sharp smile crossing her face. It was only as her hands slipped beneath Photinus' arms to pick him up off the floor that her disembodied light eased slowly back into existence. This time, however, it shone from inside one of the skulls that decorated the top of her head.

"Now now, you ought to go and eat something. If you don't, someone else is going to eat you." She crooned into his ear, staring with wildly excited eyes over his shoulder at the other girl who had offered her hand just a moment too late.

"Holy s**t!" Mills could feel every hair on her body stand on end. She almost yelled, 'It's the Cheshire cat!' but the resemblance ended with the creepy grin. The girl's outstretched hand had become claw-like and with an effort she relaxed and stood up straight, adopting the Mills-typical attitude problem and tough stance. "Nice job lady, I think he peed his pants."

Photinus never would have thought his virgin scream would be stolen by a prank. He felt almost... cheated... "I did not soil myself!" he growled, his voice just a little too frantic for his liking. His eyes were still wide and sleepless, though the hysteria was quickly fading, as was the bright glow of his hands, which had flared in his panic. But no matter how he tried to compose himself, shudders coursed through his body, feeling this woman's presence behind him. She is so creepy... and she knows it! he thought helplessly. "Er, thank you for helping me up..." he added, "that is, unless you were planning to eat me. I'd really prefer if you didn't," he smiled faintly. At least he could try to joke about it.

"You guys have some killer lights. You'll never need a lantern!" Mills wobbled her jaw slowly from side to side, the bruise on her chin annoying her.

"Yeah, I guess so..." Photinus frowned and peered at the glowing orb that seemed to like Lucasta's headband of skulls. The source of his light, of course, came from the fireflies and their genes. What does hers come from?

The best way to describe the noise that passed Lucasta's lips, was a cackle - in a way that it could've been a normal, feminine laugh, if it hadn't been so manic and burst out of nowhere. She let her fingers drag slowly away from Photinus' body, and it was lucky that he had some chitin for protection because she wasn't being very wary of where her claws went. She seemed too magnetically interested in Mills and her comment to care if he got sliced. "Aha! That would be quite terrible, wouldn't it?" She agreed loudly, being completely conspicuous as she glanced down at the boy to make sure he hadn't. Good. No accidents.

She crept from behind the firefly hybrid, staying an uncomfortably close distance with her arm brushing his shoulder as they passed. It was amusing to her that her height seemed so impressive in comparison to the other patients, which also didn't help to make her seem any more friendly. The calculating glitter in her eyes was simply not trustworthy, especially when glowering down at them. "Calm down little bug, I don't plan on eating you tonight." She assured him slowly, without any clarification on whether that meant she was considering it for a later date. Her smile was still lingering as she said this, but extinguished immediately when she realized something.

His hands were glowing.

She took two wide steps back and hunched her shoulders, a truly insulted look passing over her face as she bared jagged teeth. Out of nowhere, she seemed like she might be considering attack. "What is this? Your hands, glowing?" Her eyes narrowed again, and that paranoid sphere of light whizzed out from it's skull and quivered between the two people. "Do you think they're better than mine or something? Hmm? SPEAK UP!"

If it hadn't been painfully obvious before now, it seemed like Mills and Photinus had unfortunately met up one of the wilder patients.

Despite himself, the strange, grey-skinned woman's laughter excited a lurch out of Photinus' body. He swallowed a shriek that tried to burst through his teeth, though some terrified sound managed to escape him. The sensation of claws on chitin was a disgusting, creepy feeling that gave the same rolling sensation down the spine as when one hears metal on a chalkboard. His knees knocked together indignantly as Lucasta checked his crotch, just to be sure.

Mills, through her fear, found their exchange absolutely amusing. At the moment, she wouldn't have noticed a mouth-breathing zombie dragging a limb behind if it had tried to sneak up behind her. However, she was absolutely on edge the moment the strange woman crept around the body of the firefly, thus he no longer acted as a shield between them.

She won't eat me tonight? How very... comforting? There was no way he would be able to sleep soundly tonight. If he fell into a coma he would wake screaming.

The girl cocked her head curiously and frowned, stepping to the side. The woman had altered her movements and now seemed to be studying Photinus. What was she looking at that was interesting to her? His... hands? She jumped vaguely as the light jumped out of the band of bones wrapped around her head. Jumped again when she began to yell at him. What the hell?

"AH!" Photinus cringed and covered his head; he had no idea what the light might do to him, nor the woman, who seemed so irate all of a sudden. Of course, his hands were suddenly glowing brightly yet again. This he had no conscious control over. "I... no..." You can have them if you want, I hate them! he thought helplessly, but something warned him that he should not say such a thing. She might chop them off and then he would have no hands.

"Hey, lady... he can't help how he is..." Mills said in disgust. She couldn't know that for certain of course, but most people here didn't want to be how they were.

"Are you kidding? I can't sneak around here with my hands like they are!" he blurted out, then added, mumbling, "I wish I had some gloves... at least then I could hide them sometimes..." His hands slid down before his face and he looked down at his open palms.

Mills probably would have laughed if it were any other situation. But at the moment she was caught between feeling sorry for the guy and wondering if this lady was going to shank them or something.
